Is Storage Spaces supported with an all flash configuration?

If I were to only setup SSD drives, is it supported as a use case for Storage Spaces?

Hello,
AFAIK you can use it that way. BUT keep in mind that SSDs shouldn't be used for lot of writing changes, instead they should mostly be used for read access.
The mix with HDD is always described as solution

  • DPM Storage Pool on Windows Server 2012R2 iSCSI target Storage Spaces - supported?

    Hi,
for migration purpose we need more space for one of our DPM 2012R2 Servers.
And we cannot buy more space for our NetAPPs..
So our idea was to use an Windows Server 2012R2 as an iSCSI target and use Storage Spaces.
I remember something that using an iSCSI target on Windows 2008 was not supported.
Is this configuration supported when usinf DPM 2012R2 on Win 2012R2 and the target is Win2012R2 aswell?
    Thanks in advance
    regards

    Hi,
    This talks about
Virtual DPM servers, but the same is true for Physical DPM servers when it comes to using .VHD(x) files for DPM storage pool.
Virtual DPM installations do not support the following:
    Windows 2012 Storage Spaces.
Virtual hard drives built on top of storage spaces.
Local or remote hosting of VHDX files on Windows 2012 storage spaces.
Enabling Disk Dedupe on volumes hosting virtual hard drives.
Using synthetic FC to connect to tape drives.
Windows 2012 iSCSI targets (which use virtual hard drives) as a DPM storage pool.
NTFS compression for volumes hosting VHD files used in the DPM storage pool.
Bitlocker on volumes hosting VHD files used for the storage pool.
A native 4K sector size of physical disks for VHDX files in the DPM storage pool.
Virtual hard drives hosted on Windows 2008 servers.

  • Storage Spaces - volume with deduplication always flagged as "online filesystem check needed"

    Hi,
I am using Storage Pools and we have quite some Volumes on them.
I am noticing an warning to do an online check of a Volume on 2 volumes where dedup is activated.
If I do the check, all is fine for about 10-30 minutes, and it's flagged again to be checked. It never sais it needs any repair.
The odd thing is, other volumes without DEDUP don't show this behaviour.
    What could cause this error?
    - Disk Space is enough available.
    - Logs don't tell a lot. We have quite some entries with low disc space, but as there are volumes with DPM on this machine, it's referencing DPM Volumes with low disc space warnings. (Info - no DEDUP activated on DPM Volumes as it's not supported).
So basically why are deduped volumes (successful deduped with over 40 %), always in a state that needs a check?
    Thanks
    Patrick

    I have the same problem.
In upgrading the storage pool from 2012 to 2012 R2 (new installation).
    It looks good
Try a variety of methods, the last one is garbage collection.
I looked inside tips Best Practices Analyzer does not clean up the garbage, so try.
    PS script (requires administrator privileges)

  • 3 Node hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover Clustering with Storage spaces on one of the Hyper-V hosts

    Hi,
We have 3x Dell R720s with 5x 600GB 3.5 15K SAS and 128 GB RAM each. Was wondering if I could setup a Fail-over Hyper-V 2012 R2 Clustering with these 3 with the shared storage for the CSV being provided by one of the Hyper-V hosts with storage spaces installed
(Is storage spaces supported on Hyper-V?) Or I can use a 2-Node Failover clustering and the third one as a standalone Hyper-V or Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V and storage spaces.
Each Server comes with QP 1G and a DP10G nics so that I can dedicate the 10G nics for iSCSI
Dont have a SAN or a 10G switch so it would be a crossover cable connection between the servers.
Most of the VMs would be Non-HA. Exchange 2010, Sharepoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2 would be the only VMS running as HA-VMs. CSV for the Hyper-V Failover cluster would be provided by the storage spaces.

I thought I was tying to do just that with 8x600 GB RAID-10 using the H/W RAID controller (on the 3rd Server) and creating CSVs out of that space so as to provide better storage performance for the HA-VMs.
    1. Storage Server : 8x 600GB RAID-10 (For CSVs to house all HA-VMs running on the other 2 Servers) It may also run some local VMs that have very little disk I/O
    2. Hyper-V-1 : Will act has primary HYPER-V hopst for 2x Exchange and Database Server HA-VMs (the VMDXs would be stored on the Storage Servers CSVs on top of the 8x600GB RAID-10). May also run some non-HA VMs using the local 2x600 GB in RAID-1
    3. Hyper-V-2 : Will act as a Hyper-V host when the above HA-VMs fail-over to this one (when HYPER-V-1 is down for any reason). May also run some non-HA VMs using the local 2x600 GB in RAID-1
The single point of failure for the HA-VMs (non HA-VMs are non-HA so its OK if they are down for some time) is the Storage Server. The Exchange servers here are DAG peers to the Exchange Servers at the head office so in case the storage server mainboard
goes down (disk failure is mitigated using RAID, other components such as RAM, mainboard may still go but their % failure is relatively low) the local exchange servers would be down but exchange clients will still be able to do their email related tasks using
    the HO Exchange servers.
Also they are under 4hr mission critical support including entire server replacement within the 4 hour period.
If you're OK with your shared storage being a single point of failure then sure you can proceed the way you've listed. However you'll still route all VM-related I/O over Ethernet which is obviously slower then running VMs from DAS (with or without virtual SAN
LUN-to-LUN replication layer) as DAS has higher bandwidth and smaller latency. Also with your scenario you exclude one host from your hypervisor cluster so running VMs on a pair of hosts instead of three would give you much worse performance and resilience:
with 1 from 3 physical hosts lost cluster would be still operable and with 1 from 2 lost all VMs booted on a single node could give you inadequate performance. So make sure your hosts would be insanely underprovisioned as every single node should be able to
handle ALL workload in case of disaster. Good luck and happy clustering :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Unable to repair degraded Virtual disks in Storage Spaces under Hyper-V 2012 R2 Core

    Hi all,
I am finding myself in the following conundrum. I have a storage pool under Hyper-V Core, with 2 2TB Seagate drives.
One of the drives completely died (wouldn't spin up, tried it in a different box, still to no avail). I sent it in to Seagate for warranty replacement, got the new drive. Installed it and went through the notions of adding it to the pool and retiring the
one that was with "Lost Communication" status.
Tried to repair the virtual disks that are showing as "Unhealthy-Detached", quickly get 100% complete, but the repair didnt work.
The storage pool is in degraded state.
    Looks like metadata is corrupted.
Followed this post to upgrade Storage Spaces to latest version:
     https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/eead59e9-5e49-4bb6-8cbb-1dafddd9576b/unable-to-repair-degraded-virtual-disks-in-storage-spaces-2012r2?forum=winserverfiles
    Still, to no avail.
    Couple of questions:
    1) Is the data on the 3 virtual disks in state "Unhealthy: Detached" not recoverable?
    2) How can I get the storage pool back to "healthy"?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Your Time Capsule disk is low on storage space - error

I am getting the error "Your Time Capsule disk is low on storage space." and it now flashes amber. I use the time capsule to set up a wireless network and I can no longer access the internet from my MapBook Pro in another room, only if I am next to the Time Capsule. Help!!! Why is my time capsule low on storage space? I thought it is suppose to delete the old backups to make room for the new backups.

    MacDoz wrote:
I too am getting the same low disk space issue on my Time Capsule, and have not been able to find an answer anywhere given that I thought the Time Capsule was meant to automatically delete old back-ups.
Those are two different, independent, things.
Since you can use a Time Capsule for things besides backups, there's a built-in warning (the flashing light) when it gets near full (exactly how full is not clear).
Time Machine is separate; when it doesn't have space for a new backup, it will delete the oldest backup(s) as necessary, if it can, to make room for new ones.
The handling is a bit different, though, for Leopard vs. Snow Leopard.
In Leopard, if you have the +Warn when old backups are deleted+ box checked in Time Machine Preferences > Options, it will fail with a message. All you have to do is remove the check.
In Snow Leopard, it will delete old backups as necessary, do the backup, then send a message if you have the box, now worded +Warn after old backups are deleted,+ checked.
See #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details.

  • Cmdlets for a usable storage space

I have available 8 x 2TB HDDs and 4 x 400GB SSD's which I want to create a Tiered Storage based Storage Spaces volume with.  I want to use 10GB of space for the Quorum volume later.  I'm missing something, here's what I'm doing.
    Here's my physical disks:
    PS C:\Users\administrator> Get-PhysicalDisk

    PhysicalDisk10 True OK Healthy Auto-Select 1.82 TB

I assign the available physical disks to the array variable $PhysicalDisks
    $pooldisks = Get-PhysicalDisk | ? {$_.CanPool –eq $true }
Then I create a new storage pool using $pooldisks.
    New-StoragePool -StorageSubSystemFriendlyName *Spaces* -FriendlyName TieredPool1 -PhysicalDisks $pooldisks
Then I assign them to SSD and HDD tiers:
    $tier_hdd = New-StorageTier -StoragePoolFriendlyName TieredPool1 -FriendlyName HDD_TIER -MediaType HDD
    $tier_ssd = New-StorageTier -StoragePoolFriendlyName TieredPool1 -FriendlyName SSD_TIER -MediaType SSD
And I get stuck trying to create the Virtual Disk:
    New-VirtualDisk -FriendlyName VirtualDisk1 -StoragePoolFriendlyName TieredPool1 -NumberOfColumns 4 -OtherUsageDescription "8 x 2TB HDD and 4 x 400GB SSD" -ProvisioningType Fixed -ResiliencySettingName Mirror -StorageTiers $tier_ssd, $tier_hdd -StorageTierSizes 800GB, 8000GB -WriteCacheSize 5GB
The error message I receive is:
New-VirtualDisk : There are not enough eligible physical disks in the storage pool to create the specified virtual disk configuration.

The reason I am trying to do this manually and not via the GUI, is because I need to assign 4 columns to the Storage Space, and the GUI defaults to 2. Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
I would like to know the exact part which causes the error message, the number of column or the size of the virtual disk.
So please help try the following 2 commands and see if any one of them could be performed:
    New-VirtualDisk -FriendlyName VirtualDisk1 -StoragePoolFriendlyName TieredPool1
    -NumberOfColumns 2 -OtherUsageDescription "8 x 2TB HDD and 4 x 400GB SSD" -ProvisioningType Fixed -ResiliencySettingName Mirror -StorageTiers $tier_ssd, $tier_hdd -StorageTierSizes 800GB, 8000GB -WriteCacheSize 5GB
    and

  • HT4914 Out of storage space

My old laptop only has a 35G HDD. I was trying to upload all of my CD's and quickly ran out of storage space. With iCloud can I remove all of the stored music from my HDD once it has been matched, thus freeing up space?

You can, but the content will only be accessible when connected to the Internet.  If that's a none issue, then go ahead and do it.
Otherwise, get a larger drive for the computer or an external drive to store your iTunes library on.

  • Storage Spaces Upgrade Mystery

So I have a custom built server running Server 2012 Essentials. It has a storage spaces pool with a bunch of drives in parity config. I decided to upgrade to 2012 Essentials R2. I did the research and found it needed to be a clean install, but that was OK
because I was planning on moving the OS off an older platter drive and install to an SSD. Then I researched migrating the storage spaces pool over once I had the new OS running. I found some people who said it was a pain, and some people who said it was easy.
I found an article with the handful of powershell commands that should get my storage pool alive on R2 and upgraded to the R2 implementation of storage spaces.
So here is the mystery. I could not install the OS with the storage pool drives attached. Windows setup only saw the SSD in the screen asking what drive I wanted to install on (good), but when I would select it, it would give me a weird message of "We
couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files." When I booted down and removed power from all the pool drives, this issue went away when I tried again and 2012 R2 essentials installed fine.
So I got ready with my powershell commands and plugged in all the storage pool drives and booted the server back up. Shockingly, the storage spaces pool was just right there when I logged in. Fully intact, writable, and healthy. I didn't have to run any
powershell commands to select it, make it writable, bring it online, convert it, etc... it just worked. I did try to run the update commandlet to bring the storage space current, and it asked me to confirm, but then it didn't seem to do anything after that,
and calling the cmdlet to get current jobs showed nothing running.
So I am not complaining, but I don't get why I was able to do this without any special steps, while every article and doc I found with people in similar situations had to jump through all sorts of hoops.

Move data from storage spaces to backup destination, make a clean OS install, re-create storage spaces from scratch (whatever disk layout you choose), move data back from backup location to storage spaces. Everything else is playing dice.

  • Out of storage space on my computer, but plenty on ATV...

    Hi. I'm new here.
I just ordered a new Apple TV, and I'm thrilled that it has so much storage space, but with only 15gb left on my computer's hard disk, I don't think I can even take advantage of it. Can I load up the ATV with video content and then remove it from my computer once it's sync'd? (Cuz lord knows I don't have space to keep it on both.)
Thought someone on here might know. Thanks for reading.

You may have to do it manually.
What you need to be doing is copying the original files onto an external drive somewhere. Delete the original iTunes entry and file once the copy has been made, then change iTunes Preferences to link to imported files rather than importing the actual files into the library, then import all those movies off the external drive. If you then want to rip a new CD or something and you want the files to go into your library you'll have to change the preference back.
I'd suggest making a Smart Playlist matching vidoe type to Movies etc but you don't have the option to export to a hard drive only burn the movies to CD/DVD - at least that's my understanding.

  • Files in Storage Spaces taking WAY too much space

If you look at the following two Images:
You'll notice that while I have only 629 GB of files on the Storage Space, it is taking up an astounding 2.45 TB in my Storage Space. With the two-way mirror I have set up it should only be about 1.26 TB. I'm not sure can someone explain as to why my files
are taking up 4X the amount of space they should?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Hi,
I made a test in our test enviroment, it seems like the phenomenon you encountered is system design by default.
Generally speaking, when you create a new storage pool, and put some file into it. The value of Using *** pool capacity should 3X bigger than the practical capacity. While if you set the Storage Pool too big, it would produce error. The greater the
    number, the greater the error.

  • ADI0052E: TSM API Error: ANS1311E (RC11)   Server out of data storage space

    Hello guys,
I have a problem with the backup on MaxDB. It always fails with the following error message
ADI0052E: TSM API Error: ANS1311E (RC11)   Server out of data storage space
Has anyone faced this problem before? Any solution how could this be solved?
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards,
    Dan

    Hi Dan,
Check the TSM server and make sure the primary storage pool that is defined
as your copy destination for the management class you are using is not full
and or you have not run out of scratch tapes. In either case a storage pool
has filled up and cannot migrate data causing the RC11. This is usually what
an RC11 Server out of data storage space means.
I am sharing configuration for Oracle database. You can check similar configuration for MaxDB database.
when i defined the node in my tsm server :
REG NODE hostname_oracle password maxnummp=2, it was defined in standard storage pool, i moved it in other storage.
    Hope this is useful.

  • All plugins uptodate but on upload file get "USING one of the supported browser with latest Adobe Flash is required to experience enhanced file upload features

I am freelancer. When I tried to upload files on elance it give following error and disable the upload button:using one of the supported browser with latest Adobe flash is required to experience enhanced file upload features.
All plugins are up to date. Flash version 11.7 installed.

I assume Firefox 19 worked fine on the site?
Some sites may be mistakenly identifying Firefox 20 as Firefox 2, which is a very old version they probably no longer support. As a test, you could "lie" to the site about your Firefox version and see whether that little deception works.
This take a minute to set up. Here's how:
    (1) Select and copy the following preference name to the clipboard:
    general.useragent.override.elance''.''com
    (2) In a new tab or window, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (3) In the filter box, type '''override''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (4) Make sure '''general.useragent.site_specific_overrides''' is set to its default value of true (or right-click and choose Reset if it is not).
    (5) Right-click anywhere in the preference list area and choose
    New > String
then paste the preference name you copied. Click OK and enter TEMP or asdf or any text as a temporary placeholder. You should see the preference added in bold. Leave about:config open and switch back to this tab.
    (6) Select and copy the following useragent string to the clipboard ''(it's all one line)'':
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:19.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/19.0
    (That's Firefox 19 on Windows 7 32-bit)
    (7) In about:config, double-click '''general.useragent.override.elance''.''com''' and paste to replace the temporary text with the new useragent string. Click OK, you're done here.
Now try reloading a page where you need to upload (use Ctrl+Shift+r) and test that function again. Any change?

  • HT5637 now that I have subscribed to iTunes match and synched with my phone, I assume that all the music stored on my phone is now stored in the cloud.  Can I now delete the tunes on my phone so that I regain storage space?

Now that I have subscribed to iTunes Match and synched my phone, I'm assuming that my 6.9GB of music and 2.3 GB of videos are stored in the cloud and accessible to my phone for listening or watching.  Can I now delete them from my phone so that I regain the 9.2GB of storage space?

Go to Settings > General > Usage, select Music, then Edit. There will be a delete option there. It may take a few minutes to delete if you have a large collection on your iPhone.
