Is the 17" now obsolete?

I am pretty sure I am not alone in this, so I am asking for your opinion and advice or just to share your thoughts here. I want a desktop replacement portable laptop computer for Aperture and Photoshop use with multiple raw images. Money is not an issue, I just want the best I can get and have decided to stay with Mac. The 17" 2.4 GHz model is pretty close to perfect for me except for one thing. The backlight behind the LCD screen is CCFL and not LED. Now 6 months ago, I would not have hesitated to buy the 17" as it is configured today. In fact i would have been very happy with the HD screen.
The problem is that I have read all the reviews that the new LED backlight technology is far superior for a long lasting screen without brightness degradation or worse. I can live with the lesser battery life as it is mostly to used around the house. From all I have read, it doesn't seem that the 17" will be upgraded to LED soon as it is more expensive and Apple does not want to raise prices in the competitive field of laptops.
I could buy the 15.4" version but I really want the 1440x1200 HD resolution. I considered a 15.4" plus a 23" cinema monitor, but then I am getting away from the reason I am getting a laptop. If I go that way, i might as well get a table top or iMac but I want to be able to use it in the bedroom, living room, outdoors and at an occasional Starbucks.
I don't want to wait a year to buy, I am ready able and anxious to buy now. I don't think the MBP line will be upgraded any time soon (other than possibly the LED feature), since it is currently at the top of the heap for power and speed in the notebook field. I have read that the current CCFL / LCD 17" will lose up to half it's brightness every year and has a life span of only about 4-6 years with heavy use. since these things cost severa thousands of dollars tricked out, I don't want to have to trade it in for about 5 years or more if possible.
If what is being said about CCFL/ LCD screens losing brightness by up to half every year, the notebook I have in 5 years will be like a dimming ember while the LED backlit screen will still be burning bright and clear.
If I buy the current 17" today and they come out with a new LED version a month later, i will be very unhappy. If I wait for it to come and it takes a year, it will be very hard to wait.
So my choices seem to be
1. Wait for the 17" to be upgraded (not sure if I have the patience for that if it goes on too long).
2. Buy the 15.4" and a cinema monitor. I get portability and desktop editing quality monitor but give up the fully portable all in one advantage of the laptop.
3. Buy the current 17" 2.4GHz version tricked out and just live with my decision, The toughest choice in the long run since Apple has said it will at some point when economically feasable change all it's screens to LED, (Just won't say when).

You are right, CCFL backlit LCD's are now immediately obsolete with the release of Apple's 15" and
Sony's 13" notebooks. I will spend the money to get the best, but I am not so wealthy or foolish that I want to upgrade a $4000 notebook every year to get every little bump. I think, if what I have read is true, that the LED backlit screen is a very significant upgrade to the current configuration. I remember when LCD was introduced to the laptop. It really revolutionized the laptop movement to make it what it is today. Now, laptops are so good and expensive that you should get 4-5 years out of them easily. According to what i have read, CCFL/LCD screens will be significantly dimmer compared to what they are new where as a new LED/LCD screen will have approximately the same look in five or even ten years that it has when new.
If Apple had released all three MBP's with LED/LCD screens, I would not have written my post, but they chose to tease us with only one model release with this feature, stating that all will be upgraded someday in the unknown future. I think in a sense, by this announcement, Apple has created a conflict in their product line and made the 13 and 17" models obsolete.
If I am the only one here who wants current technology in a computer I am buying, please let me know. I think that they should have waited until they could upgrade the entire MBP line instead of just releasing one model out of three just so that they could claim to be "green".

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

Is iChat now obsolete

I have the old Mac OS X PowerPC G5 (iMacGS) shich has the iChat. Question: Seems they are now using FaceTime. is iCaht now obsolete ? If not, can you still use it, given that someone ekse has the same old Mac? and If not, can it be used with Facetime? Reaon for asking is that iChat had the capability of having 3 people simultaneously videow chat. Thank you

New Macs do not ship with iChat. The general idea seems to have Messages and FaceTime take over, but I like the ability to work on a computer remotely that iChat offered. My 91-year-old mother-in-law lives 1500 miles away and has a MacBook Pro that sometimes confuses her.
With iChat screen sharing, I can help her through any problems, do maintenance, and generally keep her MBP happy from my iMac without leavig home. Were I forced to go with a third-party VNC scheme, she would probably not be able to handle it at her end. iChat is easy for her to use.

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

I've just signed up to iTunes Match as I have songs on my iPhone 4 which wont sync with iTunes as they are from CDs but I can't see my music in the cloud now. Anyone had the same problem and have an easy fix?

What fixed it for me:
On your computer, open iTunes > My iPhone (or whatever name you gave your iPhone) > "Music" page
Uncheck "Sync Music"
Click "Sync" button (bottom right)
Let it run and finish
Uncheck the box for every song, playlist, etc.
Click "Sync" button (bottom right) (This step may be unnecessary, but I did it and got the result I wanted.)
Let it run and finish
Check the boxes for the music you want on your iPhone
Click "Sync" button (bottom right)
Let it run and finish

It is now confirmed that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
◼ Password protection
◼ Blog and photo comments
◼ Blog search
◼ Hit counter
◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken. If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

It sounds as if maybe you have just bookmarked the wrong thing.

Restoring your iPod to factory settings is the best way to try and get it back to working order. You can use the instructions below to restore it:
How to restore iPod
Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
Click Restore.
If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time.

I have to constantly go to Safari Preferences to remove them and then the browser will start working again. What can I do to stop this?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

TS1702 I tried to download the upgrade, now it won't install and I can not access my documents. It said Vi did not have enough space for the upgrade so I made room but still no luck.

What upgrade are you trying to install? Your profile shows iOS 5.1.1, which is the current max iOS.

I used a third party programme called Mackeeper UGHHH,it moved loads of files to the trash now i do not know where they originally came from or belong!! the put back option is in grey??how can i manually put these files back where they belong?SO upset!!

hello there thank u so much for ur reply!! ok i uninstalled mackeeper now and the put back option is still in grey im so confused...i tried restarting my computer like u said and put back still in grey??!! the files that are in my trash are everything from Accounts,address book plug-ins,address book,adobe,aim.........then stuff like apple,Audio,....to caches color pickers,colors,com.apple.TCC,to DVD player to facebook,google to ilifemedia browser to itunes to keychains to movie effects,preferences printers to skype...my Native instruments files BUT not all of them my garage band but not all of it...it seriously looks like my whole library is in the trash i tried to put things back where i THINK they belong and it just added the item or folder under where i thought it went and didnt restore functionality to for instance google chrome and all my book marks are there....they seem to be only certain things from my library that would have added some functionality to apps and programmes like my garageband is missing stuff photobooth wont work so on.......kinda looks a bit like this thats only the half of it!!
