Is the 2.0GHz worth it?

Hey, I'm about to buy the imac 17inch intel model, and I was just wondering if it would be worth it to clunk down the additional cash for the 1 GHz or 2 GHz models. I plan on using the machine primarily for garage band, music composition/producing, and microsoft office.
Also, while I'm at it, does anyone know how to get logitech 5.1 speakers to work on the new imacs? As far as I can tell they all have only one audio plug. Do I need some sort of audio card attachment thing?
Thanks

The difference in power from the 1.83 to the 2.0ghz will be minimal. The main choice you should make is wether you want the 17 inch screen or the 20 inch screen.
The 20 inch model does come with a variety of benifits for the price increase, such as a 250gb hard drive standard. It also has the option to double your VRAM for only 75$. I reccomend the 20 inch model, however the 17 will easily suit all your needs.
Also, Im not sure about the Logitec speakers, I use a set of 2.1 Logitecs with a sub and they work fine.

I have visited a genuis bench at Fountain gate however, they tell me I need to ring apple support which I will do on the next working day.

You are going to need to change the email address you use with your old ID. Once you have got access to your old account you will then log into both accounts at the same time on your Mac and transfer your data to a single account. We can do this later, but need you to get access to your old account first.

To use the hotspot for any of those devices, I believe you have to switch to a postpaid account and plan. You can see the pricing for the available postpaid plans under the "Shop" area of the website.

  • Doe's the reconfigured mac mini with the 3.0GHz Dual Core i7, with 3.5GHz Turbo Boost, run at 7200 rpm?

    Hello there.
Doe's the reconfigured mac mini with the fourth generation 3.0 GHz Dual Core i7 with 3.5GHz Turbo Boost, with 1TB Fusion Drive, run at 7200rpm?
    Thanks.

Historically Apple have generally used 5400rpm hard disk drives and while the detailed information on the Apple store does not definitively say what speed hard disk the 1TB Fusion drive includes, it does make mention of testing conducted with a 5400rpm drive.
Therefore I think we can safely assume it does come with a 5400rpm 1TB hard disk. However this is not necessarily as bad as it sounds, the whole point of a Fusion drive is to automatically off-load the most commonly used files to the much faster 128GB SSD portion of the Fusion drive so overall you should get performance better than even a 7200rpm hard disk.
Finally, as far as I can see for the Mac mini it does not matter which speed model you buy they will all come with the same 1TB drive model if you chose a 1TB capacity, so the 3.0GHz Dual Core i7, 2.8GHz Dual Core i7, and 2.6GHz Dual Core i5 will all have a 5400rpm 1TB hard disk.

  • Is upgrading to the latest AE worth it?

I currently have an AE MB053LL/A, which is the first model they offered gigabit Ethernet.
I have a Mac Pro, a MacBook Pro, and a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ hardwired to the AE and a PC, iTouch, and iPad connected to it wirelessly. Based on all of this hardware, are there any performance advantages to upgrading to the latest AE?

+Is upgrading to the latest AE worth it?+
That would probably depend on what value you assign to the ability to:
    1) Broadcast both a 2.4 GHz band and a 5 GHz band simultaneously, which will allow your "fastest" devices to work at their maximum speed while other devices work at their respective maximum speeds, with the slower devices on the 2.4 GHz band not slowing down the faster devices on the 5 GHz band.
    2) Broadcast a separate Guest Network* to allow users to connect to the internet without access to any of the devices on your "private" network.
*The Guest Network can only be enabled if the AirPort Extreme is connected to a modem (single ethernet port).
Chances are, you may have a current internet connection speed in the 10-20 Mbps range. Your current router is already much faster than this, so there will be no noticeable improvement in your internet connection by upgrading to a newer router. Another way of saying the same thing is that your internet connection will always be the "choke" point on your network. If your goal is a faster internet experience, you'll need to look for a faster internet service.

Video is the magic word for fast CPUs, large screens, maximum RAM and large HHDs.  Ditto what eww says and do not order RAM and HDD upgrades through Apple.  It is much, much less expensive through third party vendors.
    Ciao.
I do some video work myself so I have an understanding of your needs.

  • Just got Audigy 2ZS Notebook - Is any of the bundled software worth installi

    Hi
I usually only install the driver when I get a creative card, as the bundled software tends to take over. I use the cards just for Cubase ASIO drivers. I'm just wondering am I missing out on anything. Is any of the software bundled with the card really worth installing? Or am I better off just leaving it on the CD
    thanks,

    Thx anyway, I'm in US
I just search the forum and got the installation CD that I can download for free anyway it's here:

  • Is there a huge difference between the 2.0GHz and 2.2GHz MBP's?

I am wondering if there is a really big difference between the two models?  The 2.0GHz model seems fine for doing college homework, papers, power point, photo editing, video editing, web surfing, not a heavy gamer, I make podcasts and YouTube videos.  This is what I mainly do...  Can someone tell me if maybe I might have to get the 2.2GHz?  Thanks!

Spend the little more money for the 2.2Ghz your graphics potential is awesome and thus future proofs your machine a lot longer than 2.0 which the integrated and the discrete graphics are about the same lousy performance.
Also your resale value will be much higher and more willing buyers if you should ever need too.

  • Anyone get the 2.0Ghz Macbook?

Everyone seems to be talking about the higher spec 2.4Ghz Macbook - did anyone get the 2.0Ghz version and are they happy with it? Is the lack of backlit keyboard and .4Ghz an issue for anyone?
    Nick

    Hello,
I purchased the 2.0GHz MacBook on Tuesday and after getting it home and the lighting conditions I am in; I found it extremely difficult to see the keys on the keyboard. I decided to get the 2.0 because I did not want to spend the extra money on the lighted keyboard but after exchanging it today for the $1599 model, I am much happier now then ever!
I have noticed no performance upgrades going from 2.0 to 2.4 but the lighted keyboard for my situation is awesome!
This is an upgrade from the previous white MacBook and I never thought in a million years I would need the lighted keyboard but it is difficult with the black keys.
Personally, I would see where you are going to be using the new computer. If you are like me and like to have it on when you are watching a movie, I would get the lighted keyboard model but if you are going to have it on a desk and will pretty much always have lights available, I would get the 2.0GHz version.
Much to my surprise, The manager at the Apple store was very nice and waived the restocking fee for me.

  • Is the "512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage" on the new mac worth the extra cost?  I am comparing with a refurb with better specs (faster CPU, larger hard drive) and from what I undersand the PCIe flash storage is the big differentiator in cost.

hello - i am considering two macbook pros
    NEW - http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=ME294LL/A&step=config#
    REFURB - http://store.apple.com/us/product/G0ML1LL/A/refurbished-macbook-pro-27ghz-quad-c ore-intel-i7-with-retina-display
The refurb actually has a faster processor and a larger hard drive.  From what I understand, the big difference in cost is the new macbook pro contains "512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage" versus the refurb "768GB Flash Storage".
Is the PCIe flash storage really worth the extra cost (and smaller size)?
PS - Also I believe the brand new one has 2 GB graphics memory as opposed to 1 GB graphics memory.  I don't really care about that as much as I won't be doing a lot of video editing or gaming.

Is she wrong - are these actually going to people's homes, being used, then returned and resold?
Some are some are not. Otherwise Apple has a ton of Mac's sitting around that have been returned by customers under their 14 day No Questions Asked return policy.
But they not just Returned and Resold. They go back to Apple, checked out (Tested) any parts that are not up to spec replaced and then repackaged in a plain white box to be sold as refurbs.

  • My dad has an imac G5 from 2005, and I'm wondering if we can bring it to the Apple store and replace it with one of the newer models. How much would the G5 be worth and how much money would we have to put on top of it to buy the newer model?

How much is the G5 worth? The one from 2005.

The Apple Store will offer to recycle it for free, you are better off selling it on ebay or elsewhere, I have seen decent looking ones go from $80-$250 here in Australia.
You are looking at $1000 + to get a new one

  • Is the ipad mini worth it?

I am going to get an Ipad mini soon. I never owned an IPAD just a Itouch 3rd gen 32GIG, IPhone 4 16GB, and IPhone 4s 16GB. I would like to try a ipad but the big ones are to expensive so I am thinking of getting an ipad mini and how come they didn't add retina display to the ipad mini if they could add it on the IPhone 4 and 4s?

As far as I know Apple haven't said why they didn't put a retina display on the Mini, but it may be due to pricing. As to whether it's worth it, only you know what you will be using it for and whether you will get value from owning one. From a size point of view it will be better than your phone or iPod for watching films or tv shows, and for browsing the internet and reading ebooks - you should also be able to more easily hold it one hand than the full-sized iPads.
