Is the Adobe Digital Edition (e-reader from the library) compatible with Adobe Reader X

I have Adobe Reader X on my computer, and recently downloaded the Adobe Digital Edition so that I can read books from the library. However, when I attempt to download a book, the Adobe Reader X opens, and I get the message....
XXXX book could not be opened because it is either not a supported file or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't properly decoded). Any idea what is going on and how I can correct this issue?
Any responses are appreciated...

Hi, Char.
Since your question doesn't relate to our CreatePDF service, I'm moving your question to the Adobe Reader forum.

  • How can I properly and COMPLETELY uninstall Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 from my Mac?

OK, so yeah, I *SHOULD* have known better...
A few months back, against my better judgement and without doing the proper due diligence, I tried installing Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 onto the primary drive of my MacBook Pro (running MacOS 10.6.8).
    The tell-tail signs:
    PROBLEM #1
While there IS readily available "Tech Specs" documentation for the current Adobe Digital Editions v4.0.1 installer for MacOS (which clearly states "Mac OS X v10.8 or later" is REQUIRED), there is absolutely NO indication or similar documentation for supported system software for PREVIOUS versions of Adobe Digital Editions.
    Reference URL:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/digitaleditions/downloads.html
    PROBLEM #2a
Adobe Digital Editions v3.0 for MacOS comes as an installer (which REQUIRES admin authentication to provide root-level access to your computer).
    PROBLEM #2b
Adobe "Digital Editions 3.0 Installer" is FULLY launchable under MacOS 10.6.8 (and the installed application will require MacOS 10.7 or later).
    PROBLEM #2c
There is NO associated ("ReadMe" type) support document included on the "ADE_3.0_Installer.dmg" disc image and ZERO integrated documentation within in the installer.
    PROBLEM #2d
There is NO Adobe "Digital Editions 3.0" UNinstaller either installed as part of the "Standard" installation package OR currently downloadable from Adobe.com.
    PROBLEM #3
Adobe's ONLY MacOS solution to "Uninstall previous versions [prior to the current v4.0] of Adobe Digital Editions for Mac OS" are the following instructions:
It's necessary to have administrator privileges to complete these steps.
      1. From your user directory, locate /Applications
      2. Drag the digitaleditions1x5 folder to the Trash, and empty the Trash.

    PROBLEM #4
Adobe's "What are my contact options?" page indicates BOTH "Chat (within 90 days of registration)" and "Forums" as available "Basic Support" options for Adobe "Digital Editions" software for "Download, install, setup" help, however, "Forums" is the ONLY available choice under "Contact options" for on Adobe's "Contact Customer Care" page (for "Download, install, setup" help with Digital Editions).
    Reference URL:

    PROBLEM #5
The ONLY available "Basic Support" option for "How-to's & troubleshooting" help is the Adobe Forums...and this is an example of the type nonsense response (then followed by NON-response) that one might receive there:
    https://forums.adobe.com/message/6570142
[NOTE:  After MUCH searching I did, however, manage to find a potentially interesting "Let us know how we’re doing" link (under the "Our support promise" link found on the "What are my contact options? page).  I am going to send them a brief message along with a link to THIS post and hope for the best.]
    Reference URL:

    PROBLEM #6
While I did NOT realize this prior to my attempting to install Adobe Digital Editions, apparently it would require me to "activate" my computer with an Adobe ID.
[NOTE:  This information IS included in the readily accessible FAQ (and I am sure it's also found in the installer integrated software "License"), however, this is a MAJOR "feature" of this software and could be presented MUCH more prominently as an installer integrated "ReadMe" screen.]

...and, as an added bonus, there is a SIGNIFICANT "spyware" issue with this software discussed in further depth here:

As an experienced and life-long Mac user, I really SHOULD have known better and I did have second thoughts almost immediately, but by then it was TOO LATE!!!
So, now I have this TOTAL crap, super duper DRM software that required root-level permission to install (AND I couldn't even run this installed v3.0 copy under my preferred MacOS 10.6.8 if I wanted to...but, of course, I now have ABSOLUTELY NO desire to ever use this software again), and I just want to COMPLETELY remove all traces of it from my computer!
A pretty thorough Google search yielded several so-called "solutions" that were as bad or EVEN worse than the very limited "official" resources found directly from Adobe!
Any actual, real working solutions would be VERY greatly appreciated!
Thank you SO MUCH for your time and consideration in reading!!!
    Sincerely,
    aadams77

Hmm, it shouldn't be that much of a problem. I searched my entire drive for "digital editions", and this is the whole thing:
    /Applications/Adobe Digital Editions 3.0.app
    /Users/user/Library/Caches/com.adobe.adobedigitaleditions.app
    /Users/user/Documents/Digital Editions
    /Users/user/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.adobedigitaleditions.app.plist
    /private/var/db/receipts/com.adobe.adobedigitaleditions.app.bom
    /private/var/db/receipts/com.adobe.adobedigitaleditions.app.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.adobe.DigitalEditions.plist
The application itself, three small files scattered in your user account, to unimportant installation receipt files, and another preference file in the root Library folder. Removing those should remove everything related to version 3, which is what I have installed.
Where I substituted "user" above (for the three entries of /Users/user/...), replace that with whatever the actual name of your user account is.
Edit: I double checked the installer using a small app that sorts out every file in an installer, and where each item would normally be installed. The main app is literally the only item in the installer. The receipts are created by the OS per the installer's data, and the other minor preference files are created when the app is first run. There is nothing else.

  • I can't get my Adobe Digital Edition to open after almost a year with no problems

I have used Adobe Digital Edition to download books from my library to transfer to my Nook. I started last December and never had a problem. Today I tried to download a book and ADE never opened. I tried to open ADE separately and can't get it to open. I rebooted, no help.  I have a HP Windows 7 machine.  Any ideas? Do I need to re-download ADE? Should I uninstall my current version first? Thanks for any help you can give me.  I am a bit shy to do this, as I have seen foruns talking about user activation issues, and hope to avoid that possibility.

Well, I seem to be running into problems at every step.
I made a copy of the Digital editions folder ("My Digital Editions)- under my documents- (with annotations and thumbnails inside) and also made a copy of Manifest.xlm and renamed the folder and the Manifest file.  That folder that had all those items did not have the uninstall .exe in it. It did have a setup.exe file in it. However the uninstall program was in a folder  titled Adobe Digital Editions, which was under Program Files (x86).  In addition to the uninstall file, there is a file named digitaleditions.exe
After making copies and renaming as you suggested above, I did the uninstall. it ran very quickly and said it was completed. However, nothing was removed from any of my digital edition folders.  The file digitaleditions.exe is still in the folder under Programs (x86), although the uninstall .exe file is gone. I also went to the control panel and did an uninstall of digital editions from there-it was still showing up after I ran the uninstall program. the program now no longer shows up on my list of programs(from the start button, all programs selection), although again the digitaleditions.exe prorgam still shows in the folder.
I went to adobe to download the program again. When I try to launch the program I get a window asking for my administrator password.  I know it, put it in, but I get an error message about bad password. I know the password is correct because it is the same one I log in with every start up. I only have one password. I then went to the "having trouble downloading" page on the adobe site and followed those instructions.(http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403051.html) and followed their uninstall previous versions directions.  The adobe digitaleditions program was not there to uninstall as I had done this earlier. I clicked on the link to manually install, hitting the "run" buttons as instructed.  It seems to download but then nothing happens. I can't seem to get a download from adobe.  I still have all my files in the "my digital editions folder- annotations, thumbnails etc. The set.exe is still there. I also have these copied and renamed in a different directory. And in my Adobe Digital Editions folder, the digitaleditions.exe file is still there. Nothing ever got put in the trash folder. (Note that I tried to download a book from the library and it couldn't fiind ADE.) I tried to download ADE from their webpage and same thing- nothing happens.  Do I need to pay Adobe to let me get this file redownloaded and installed?  There seems to be something stuck.  If you have any more advice I sure would appreciate it.
    thanks
    Ron

  • How to remove the delete and edit toolbar buttons from the Overview page

    Hi,
In the account/contact overview page, we see that the interaction history assignment block does not support the EDIT and DELETE options.
However, when we click on the hyperlink description of an activity in the interaction history, we get into the overview page of the activity. Here we can see the DELETE button and the EDIT button.
Is there a way to remove these two options from the overview page of an activity which is in COMPLETED status and in the interaction history section?
    Please advice.
    Thanks & Best Regards,
    Ramesh.

  • Adobe Digital Editions for IPad?

I frequently review books for an online book digest. Publishers are increasingly distributing galley proofs digitally, most often using the Adobe Digital Editions app, which seems to be compatible with every kind of ebook reader....except the IPad. I haven't found an IPad version at the app store, and I don't have a Kindle or a Nook or any of those devices that read Adobe's DRM-protected files, and so am forced to non-portably read these galleys on my IMac. Anyone know if an IPad DE app is in the offing? Or failing that, a workaround? (I tried using Txtr, which claims it can read DE files. Not.)

Incidentally, you do know that you can buy kindle or Nook apps for your ipad? I was assuming you wanted a DE-specific app.
EDIT Actually, those apps are free--you just pay for what you buy through them, if that helps you any.
Incidentally, O'Reilly, my publisher, uses PDF for real galley purposes, although they do create epub editions of their books for distribution. You might want to ask the publishers you work with if there's another format available.

  • I am not able to download the free Adobe Digital Editions in order to view the 2012 Master Tax Guide

Once I tried and got done on the status bar but it was not downloaded. The next time the status bar had error on page. Please advise.

Diana, there's a process to follow here, and there can be some technical
    issues as well.
First the technical issues.  If you have a Windows PC with Windows 7, you
may need to adjust its security settings to allow the download and also the
    interface to the tax guide.
Next, while Digital Editions is free, you need to register with Adobe and
obtain an Adobe ID in order to use it properly with most sites.  I'd start
there if you have not done so already.
After you've registered, obtained an Adobe ID and downloaded/installed
Digital Editions, go to the site where the tax guide is to be downloaded
from and try to do that.  If you get 'strange' messages, Digital Editions
may be telling you that your security settings need adjustment to allow
    downloads from this site.
    Hope this helps!

I am trying to find a fix for this issue and I saw on a lot's of post, that people are having the same problem as I am with Adobe Digital Edition 4.0.3. If I open Adobe Digital Editions 4.0.3 with no book opened and I minimized the window, then it crashes and it give's me the following error message:

note to moderator -   this is MY response to MY own posting.  How can this be a duplicate.
success.  ADE 4.0 is to be avoided. It crashed after my solution.
The solution is trash the activation.dat preference file.
Navigate to /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions and drag the activation.dat file to the trash.
If you are using 10.7, see Access hidden library files | Mac OS 10.7 and later.
I reinstalled ADE 3.0 and life is good.

Hi, I want to be able to download e-books through e-pub from the library and Adobe Digital Editions is needed to do this.  I've downloaded what I thought was ADE but what I get is what appears to be the book, "Getting Started with Adobe Digital Editions."  I want the software.  How do I get it? Am I mission something?  I've checked the Adobe website and library's too but there aren't any other choices for ADE software.  I have Windows Vista by the way. Help!

  • How do I uninstall Adobe Digital Editions 3 (for Mac)???

Dear kind, knowledgable Adobe Staff member-
As a user of SEVERAL Adobe products, I am really NOT loving the fact that there is NO CLEAR answer that I can find here (OR even in doing a Google search) for how to completely REMOVE/UNINSTALL Adobe Digital Editions 3 (for Mac)...and there are a couple/few UNanswered Adobe Communities posts (such as this one) asking this SAME question!
If you're going to create an installer for the MacOS platform (which does NOT have the built-in Winblows uninstall "feature"), then PLEASE DO either include a uninstaller tool (either installed during the install process, built into the installer as an option, OR have clear, official, and easily accessible step-by-step instructions on how to do this!
You've lost ANY shot of my returning to ADE software by not having these features...please do help me re-instill some "faith" in your company's responsiveness to the current LACK of support that I am experiencing in attempting to remove this unwanted software from my computer!
    Cordially,
    Albe Sure

I DO very much appreciate the swift effort at attempting to help...but that is NOT a working resolution for me.
    1)  As I was very clear on in my OP and title, I am seeking assistance with uninstalling Adobe Digital Editions 3 (for Mac)...
    2)  BECAUSE Adobe is distributing this software as an "installer", I am not even going to begin to trust simply deleting the Adobe Digital Editions 3 app from my applications folder...no way!  I want to thoroughly remove ALL TRACES of this application (EVERYTHING that was installed by the installer, or later by the application itself, onto my computer.  Simply deleting the app fro my my applications folder will NOT be sufficient to achieve this goal.
    3)  As the name would suggest (and the step-by-step instructions would collaborate, the CC Cleaner Tool is only for Creative Cloud installation and removal problems (and to the very best of my knowledge, Adobe Digital Editions is certainly NOT a CC program.)
"A" for effort, but not so much on providing a relevant/working Adobe Digital Editions 3 (for Mac OS) uninstall/removal suggestion(s)...STILL looking for a working solution!
