Is the Aluminum MacBook worth the extra $$$ over the new White MacBook

Hello,
This is going to be my first Mac purchase and am leaning towards the White MacBook over the Aluminum model but I've read a few postings on issues with the White MacBook display...
Thanks

Having a polycarbonate body, the white may look more fragile than the one piece aluminum but fragile is not a word I'd use to describe it. In the past year I've seen a MacBook that's fallen from a moving motorcycle - the case scuffed up but not broken and diagnostics showed the computer unharmed. Another owner brought in her MacBook that had been run over by a car - the top case cracked but the LCD unbroken and the computer passed diagnostics. I watched a student drop his MacBook as he carried it under his arm, it came to rest opened on the floor and I was certain the top had come loose but no. It was fine. And my own MacBook fell from the desk to a wooden floor and survived unscathed. Obviously others can recount examples where their MacBook was damaged by a fall but these examples indicate that the MacBook might be breakable but it isn't fragile. Not like the Dell notebook I saw fall from a desk this spring and shatter.

  • Does the new white macbook have enough juice for Logic Studio?

    Hi
I am planning to buy the new white macbook and Logic Studio. The macbook has 2Ghz processor and 2GB ram. Will that be enough to run Logic effectively or do I need more power? I could afford to upgrade to 4GB ram but can't afford a Mac book pro or the 2.4Ghz processor macbook. I will be using an Edirol UA-20 audio interface.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That should be more than enough, although it of course also depends on what you are going to do with Logic. If you are going to use big sampled instruments, it is a good idea to go for 4 GB RAM.
The processors are powerful enough, about 2.5 times Logics' minimum requirement.

  • About the new white Macbook...

Now that the "original" polycarbonate Macbook has also been upgraded with nVidia graphics, I could be persuaded to replace our iBook G4 with one of those new models : it's cheap and most important of all, it's got firewire. I'd really prefer a black one, but they only sell the white one, so I'll have to accept that.
    Anyway, I have some questions.
The 120Gb hard drive is a bit limited, but I guess it's easy to replace it yourself. Next, memory. I'd like to upgrade to 4Gb. It's DDR2 (unlike the unibody) so relatively cheap. But does this model support DDR3, should I want to put in DDR3 instead of DDR2 ? Would the slower DDR2 not limit the Gefore9400 or the macbook overall performance wise (I'm thinking Snow Leopard and Open CL) ?
And finally, does the white macbook's shell still suffer from discoloration ? The iBook we have has a palmrest which is in a light grey colour, so the problem doesn't pose itself there.

You missed my point - anyone who knows anything about Snow Leopard's performance is under an NDA and cannot talk about it. Anyone who is willing to talk about SL's performance is either guessing, talking nonsense, or breaking the NDA. We just don't know.
In terms of how the older black MB compares to the newer white model, since I haven't had a chance to play with the new one, I can say. But I can say that I switch between an original black MacBook and an early 2008 MBP almost daily and while the MBP on paper is a much faster computer with much better graphics I don't really notice all that big a difference between the two most of the time. Is that any help?

  • How's is the new White Unibody Macbook display?

I can get a great deal on the new white unibody macbook. I was wondering how it compares to the 13 in MBP?
I am more concerned with the display. Are they equal? Or is the same display as the previous ALUM 13 Macbook?
    BB

I was wondering how it compares to the 13 in MBP?
FireWire is a "Must Have" for a lot of users. Spend about $175 more for the Macbook Pro, with FireWire 800/400. Then you will be "Unstoppable"!
The Firewire port is a faster way of connecting devices to your Mac, such as hard drives, video and audio equipment. A Firewire connection also allows you to boot into Target Mode, which basically turns your machine into a hard drive.
Target Mode allows users connect their Mac to another Mac, to access the files on the machine in Target Mode. You can also re-image or Install software on computers, using various Software Utilities through the use of Target Mode and Firewire.

Many peripherals are Firewire ONLY.

When you have a mac (with Firewire) that will not boot it will most often still work in target disk mode making it possible to either fix the harddrive or at least back it up.

I am more concerned with the display
My advice here is to buy from someone that will let you return it if you are not happy. Some have complained of a yellow tint in various displays.

  • Maya 2012 on the new white MacBook

Does anyone use this on the new white MacBook. I know it will run on a MacBook pro but I can't afford that and I already have 8 gigs of ram that I know will fit n work with new white MacBook. But I want to know how well it works if at all, I primarily will use it for my animation course and transfer files and finish large scale work on my desktop at home when not in class. Any info would be awesome.

Well, as far as I can recall, it's a first for Apple.
Whenever a new design model has been released on any of their products, the old design has virtually disappeared overnight (except for old stock still on other retailers shelves).
I think they were either sold as "reconditioned" or stored and scavenged for repair parts.
I recall that the iPod battery replacement program essentially entailed getting a new one even if it was a long discontinued model. They had to store "new old stock" somewhere.

  • Is there ANY way to do S-Video or composite TV out on the new white MB?

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9319G/A (read the small text)
Apparently the mini-DVI to Video adapter doesn't work with the newer white MacBooks now.
I hope there is some way to do TV-out to an older TV that only has S-video and RCA composite inputs. Is there? Not all of us have high end TVs with DVI or HDMI inputs.
    Getting quite frustrated.

  • Can I trade my iPod Touch 4g 8GB at the Apple Store for the new White one?

My Ipod Touch 4g is really new  i just got it this summer and i still have the box, stickers, charger and instructions and i was wondering if i can treade it in for the new White ipod touch

You won't be able to exchange it with Apple, no.
Like csound1, the best I can suggest is to sell it on eBay or Craigslist, and put that towards the cost of a new one.

  • Is Apple also replacing the display covers for the new white macbook?

All my friends who have the new macbook have the same problem with fissures next to the display's links on the upper cover side...
Apple should replace them for free..

Apple should replace them for free..
So then don't tell us, tell Apple...

  • Is the New White MacBook the same as the old model?

I want to buy a white Macbook.
Is the "new" one currently being sold (i.e. on the Apple store website) the same as the "old
    one (previous generation)?
    Many thanks for your help.

Yes, other than changes in specs (there used to be 2 versions of the previous generation white Macbook and this one is in the middle of the two) it is essentially the same as the old one.

  • Music playback issues using the new white iPod Touch with Ford's Sync System

When I connect my new 32GB white iPod Touch to the USB port of my 2011 Ford Focus' Sync system, I hear a lot of static and popping noises while the music is playing. It's almost like listening to old vinyl records.  Has anyone else experienced this issue?

    Absolutely have had this issue.
Here's a fix (but I hate it we have to do it this way):
You have to make sure your iPod's volume is turned all the way up. The static will clear. I haven't found a way around this. The Ford system ***** for that reason. Shouldn't have to rely on our iPods running at full volume in order to work. Seems to kill the battery quicker. But hey, at least you'll have clear sound.
Lemme know if it worked for you.

  • Can the new white and yellow notepad be changed back to the old one?

    Hi,
I really like the old notepad. It was beige with lines, like an old piece of paper - like a notepad! (Hence the name). I loved it. I know it was updated a while ago but it's now a plain white background with yellow writing. It's no way near as good! Why did Apple change it? Does anyone know if it's possible to get the old one back?
    Lucy

Yes. I know how to go to the other screens. For some reason the notepad apps aren't there.
The password requests are a problem other people seem to have too. It does it all the time even when I'm not using itunes, or the App store - just when I'm typing, searching for something etc. - I've emailed Apple about it.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Macbook Aluminum vs. New White Macbook?

I just bought a brand new Aluminum Macbook, which is no longer in stores. I spent $1300. I believe I got ripped off. Do you suggest I keep this Macbook or return it and buy the new white Macbook? I do like the aluminum design more then the white though. lol. Suggestions or Recommendations are appreciated =]
    Here are the specs:
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB DDR3 memory
    250GB hard drive1
    8x double-layer SuperDrive

You can get a NEW Macbook PRO for $1149. It has a FireWire port too.
Do you suggest I keep this Macbook or return it and buy the new white Macbook?
No. Return it and buy the new Macbook Pro.
The white Macbook has no FireWire port.
