Is the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512mb Graphics card good

I'm thinking about getting a new mac pro and i've been looking a this graphic card and i've also been reading comments about this card and just wondering is this card good at all.
null

I don't want to sound like a jerk but don't want people to wast their money because
You said
"If you have a 2006-07 mac pro, and want the most power you can get, crossfire two flashed pc 4870s."
That is wrong because a 2006-2007 mac pro only has ONE PCI.1.1 X16 slot you can only make it so you have two X8 slots or one X16 & one X8 To get anything from a CrossFire or SLI setup using any PCI X16 card you need two card slots that are X16.
I do agree & know if you have a 2006-2007 mac pro, then yes the apple 4870 is most likely the best you can get, besides going a flashing route. (I don't like to flash & the 4870 WORKS IN THE 2007 Mac Pro)
I have a 2,1. Mac Pro 8 Core 2007 & just got the New 2009 8 Core with 2.93 GHz Duel CPUs & I got the new GTX 285 came in the mail before the Mac Pro I got the 4870 from the 2009 to work in the 2007. But I have not tried the GTX 285 in the 2007 as the drivers have to be loaded from the disk that comes with it first & I did not take the time to do that & had the reformat the 2009 after trying to put the GTX 285 in the 2009 I found myself removing the 4870 I had just put in the 2007 then back in the 2009 then reinstall OS X 10.5.7 after that loading the driver disk from the GTX 285 first in the 2009 before placing the card the new Mac.
So I will when I have less work try the GTX 285 in the 2007 Mac Pro & let you know what happens.
I hope I was of Help

Does anyone know if 1 ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB uses how much power, because in the new Mac Pro (early 2009) it can't use more than 300W of graphics power consumption. So, i am thinking of getting 4 of those ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB graphics cards (because i'm a real gamer) and stick them all into my new Mac Pro (early 2009)but if it does exceed 300W, then would anyone suggest a powerful gaming graphics card that is both compatible with Mac and Windows as i am planning to get windows vista on boot camp. The NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB is said to be a very crappy graphics card so i'm saying NO WAY!! to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB.

Get what you need for OS X, then get a PC card just for Windows. The GT120 might do normal things in OS X and grab whatever you want.... there is 75W and two aux power connectors of 75W each. GTX 275 Nvidia or something perhaps.

  • Where can I buy a new ATI Radeon 5870 1 gb graphics card?

I've had my Mac pro since 24/08/12. Recently the my machine has been making horrible screeching noises whenever I use graphic intensive applications like 3d design. I believe the noise is coming from the ATI Radeon 5870 and would like to replace it or have one on standby if my current one dies.
I'm having difficulty finding a compatible replacement card, can anyone guide me in the right direction?

    One is listed here:

  • Is the ATI Radeon HD 4870 quiter than the NVidia GeForce 8800 GT ?

My NVidia GeForce 8800 GT just died and I have the choice to have the same one installed or to to go for the ATI 4870. (Technically I prefer the ATI but my family would prefer the quieter one!)
My main concern is the noise. Is the 4870 quieter or noisier?

I haven't run Photoshop for hours on end or otherwise made such intensive use of my card but I don't hear the 4870 run at all, As the Hatter says there is a noise at startup but no more. I have never used the other card you mention to compare it.

Looks like the upgrade kit will be available in about 2 months?
I am on this mac pro: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP30
Can anyone take a look and tell me if I'm a gen behind? The way I read this is that I have a PCIe slot, but not 2.0. So I'm SOL?
    Thanks for any guidance.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 pro 256M graphics card

I had the above card in my G4 as an upgrade, recently the G4 died so I removed the card. I was wondering if this card would be useable in my quad pro to allow the use of a second monitor. It has dual avi ports on it so I thought it would ideal for a smaller secondary monitor.
Any help on this would be much appreciated.

    Thanks Kappy,
Any recommendations on an alternative card that might do the job (and not break the bank)
The monitor I want to connect has an avi connector.

  • ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB for Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core Xenon

I have the option of picking up an ATI Radeon HD 4870 1 GB graphics card to go with my soon-to-be-new MAc Pro 2.66 Quad core. I see know that Apple can upgrade to ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB, but that card is not available to me at the moment. Will the 1GB do the job without overheating the system? Am new to the Mac Pros. Need it for the Windows gaming portion of the system. Am using the rest for graphics and photography.

If the MAc Pro 2.66 comes with Snow Leopard, why would I have to upgrade my OS?
OK. So, if got the MAc version, it would work A-OK without overheating?
    Thanks for your input!

  • Ati radeon hd 4870 mac specifications

I haven't been able to find detailed specifications for the ati radeon hd 4870 mac edition.
The PC version specs show "accelerated transcoding and decoding for H.264 and Mpeg2".
Is this on the Mac version? Is it accessed/useful when compressing video to H.264 and Mpeg2?

We started to catch up, but missed the mark as far as driver support.
A GPU can also be a GPGPU, or CUDA, or PhysX card, or used in non-Macs for SLI and CrossFire. Windows 7 uses DirectX to off load work to the GPU.
A GPU is great for a lot of mathematical, encryption, parallel computing, even as a Fortran compiler.
I've never used a computer to play games, and when you see the extremes that some go to, $1000+ for 2-3 graphic cards teamed up, 180 fps... I imagine a wall of monitors at a concert or most any presentation today.
CS4 on Windows can use Quadro CX ($1600) not just for eye-candy, but off load and render. Don't send the image back and forth to the cpu.
Intel hopes to have Larabee out next year. Which goes in the other direction, use the cpu for handling tranditional gpu functions.

  • Ati radeon hd 4870 for 1st generation mac pros?

unfortunately the ati radeon hd 4870 is working for all mac pros except the first generation: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB999ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=NDE4NDMxOA
are there any other graphics cards that have a mini displayport connector and are compatible with a mac pro first generation?
    thanks for the help!

The information on the AMD/ATI site actually says the 4870 has lower power requirements than the 3870.
The PCIe power limit of 300W is the same for the 2008 Mac Pros as the 2007 8-core Clovertown Mac Pro. Power is not an issue. EFI appears not to be an issue either as Rob's tests have shown.
Can anyone give a logical or technical reason why the 4870 is not being made available to 1st Gen Mac Pros like the 3.0 GHz 8-core. I can't think of anything.
Surely Apple aren't restricting this cards use in an effort to persuade users to upgrade? Are they?

  • Incompatibility with ATI Radeon HD 4870

Hi, using Aperture 3 Trial (I'm waiting the deliver of full one from AppleStore) with few Canon RAW images I've experienced very often crash of the application and two kernel panic (sad), especially using brush tool like skin smoothing:
    0x98c93fc8 : 0x29e44d (0x2113c164 0x1 0x10 0x0)
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000(6.0.6)@0x99753000->0x998adfff
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6)@0x8eea3000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.0)@0x98cfc000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.0)@0x98958000
After that I've tried to replace the ATI Radeon HD 4870 with my old Nvidia 8800 GT and the crashes are disappeared completely, also the kenel panic.
The 8800GT however is noticeable slower than ATi 4870 and Aperture3 is very slow with ATi, sadly slow with 8800 GT: using brush skin tool with zoom 1:1 (Z key) with color overlay and RAW images give refresh from a stoke to other until about 2 minutes! Unusable.
Also in that "wait state", activity window always reports: Generating Thumbnails (every says that)
Sorry to see that, because quality and features in this version are very exciting!
Maybe most other issues are mainly connected to graphics drivers.

Before report to Apple I would like to find most precisely the reason for the crashes :/
In those days I'm going to be crazy...
Now I've had aperture crash, some time, also in 1920x1200, so maybe resolution is a false positive :/
The last trials booting in 64 Bit kernel:
    - ATi - Aperture crash during editing RAW file from canon 50D 7D and 5D mark II
    - ATi - No crash editing jpegs
    - ATi - kernel panic on ATi kernel module during editing RAW file from canon 50D 7D and 5D mark II
    - ATi - Black screen and CPU/GPU hang editing jpegs
    - NVidia 8800 - Aperture crash during editing RAW file from canon 50D 7D and 5D mark II (with 64 Bit kernel is a bit faster)
    - NVidia 8800 - no kernel panic
    - NVidia 8800 - no hang editing jpegs
I've tried editing the same kind of RAW file on the macbook pro 17" C2D and Aperture crashed...
So, maybe is a combination between RAW file (crash Aperture) and ATi under pressure (kernel panic & hang)
p.s under macbook pro (ATi Radeon X1600), during edit, often the screen become corrupted
On macpro, I've tried also 64 Bit kernel and 32 Bit Aperure, but RAW file editing hanged anyway.
Interesting the use of memory in 64 vs 32 bit, at 64 Bit (Aperture not kernel) editing a 5D mark II RAW file rise the memory up to 6 GB ram !!! in 32 Bit mode the same image and the same filtering reach only 3 GB of ram
    weird

  • ATI Radeon HD 4870 - is it plug & play?

After few days searching why my Mac Pro (early 2008) was not passing the apple logo icon at start up (just freezing and showing every few seconds an orange color page) I concluded that my Nvidia 8800 was dead.
My best option here in Belgium is to go for the ATI Radeon HD 4870 but I was wondering how to install it.
Would the ATI Radeon HD 4870 install itself or do I need an other Graphic card on to be able to see all the process...
If it doesn't install itself I have to go to some Apple center to do the work (and the 453USD of the card... yes 315 EUROS!!!!!!!)..., I am really scared of the final bill!
Will my Mac Pro transform in a "very" expensive paper weight!

Thank you japamac for the links!
    The hatter:
To be honest I don't know if I have 10.5.7! I usually always do all the update and believe that my Mac Pro is upgraded to 10.5.7. (Because I cannot pass the Apple logo, I cannot check which exact version I have now...)
Regarding my "dead" graphic card: Is it dead if it still gives me something on the screen even if it is in a "frozen" way!? Usually really dead means dead screen too!?
My problem is to try to find out by myself because I just don't have the budget for a costly repair (only the graphic card will cost me 400USD).
My problem started when I was playing Civilazation: the color switched and even the sound started to come out of the internal speaker of my Mac pro!?

  • IMac w/ ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB

I'm about to order a new iMac but i have a few questions about the graphics capabilities. I'm a long time PC gamer but decided i want to make the full switch to Mac. Ideally a MacPro would have been my first choice but im not that rich.
I intend to order an iMac with the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB. Will this card handle games pretty well? I play world of warcraft and EVE online.
    Thanks for your input.

only issue here is that EVE for mac has a graphics bug because of driver issues... I dont know if this applies to the ATI iMacs, but it sure affects my Nvidia iMac. And this is a bug that have been present since EVE was released for mac, and Apple are aware of the problem, but has yet to fix it. So if I ever play EVE for more than background playing or in station use, I always restart into bootcamp, to play EVE there...

  • ATI RADEON HD 4870 Mac

Cam the ATI RADEON HD 4870 run in the 06 Mac Pro?

Yes it's an pc XFX 4890 (regular stock clocked model; not XXX version). I have it working in osx via injectors. I've been trying to flash it recently, as a rom has become available, however things aren't going very well... It seems possible that my later version xfx 4890 is not very compatible with the rom. Seems like people with earlier versions, had better success.
If I can't get it to flash correctly, might just change to a more compatible brand.

  • Where to buy ATI Radeon HD 4870?

I have just bought a refurb MacPro 8 core (blimey) but want to put the ATI Radeon™ HD 4870 card in it sooner or later, but when I google it there seem to be so many different versions of this. e.g. a 'sonic version' etc, and so on, and they all look different in the pictures so Im really confused as to which one to get.
Can someone please advise me which is the right one and even suggest where to buy?
    thanks:)

You mean Apple are the only suppliers of the one that works with OSX?
Yes, unless you can find another supplier that says their card will work properly with OSX in a Mac Pro.

  • ATI Radeon HD 4870 / 30''Display low res on Mini DisplayPort

hello. Since day one, my 30'' CinemaDisplay is working fine on my Mac Pro using a ATI Radeon HD 4870. Today, I wanted to connect a second display. This one's plug is a DVI one (as is that of the 30''), but one that contains the pieces C1 to 4 (cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalVisualInterface). The DVI to MiniDisplay Port adapter I got from apple has a C5 slot, but the ones for C1 to 4 are missing. The DVI Port on the ATI Radeon HD 4870 on the other hand does have the slots C1 to 4. So I connected the second display to the DVI port on the card, and the 30'' via the DVI to Mini DisplayPort adapter. After startup though, the highest resolution available for the 30'' ACD was 1028 x 960.
I hope this is the right place for such a question. I didn't find a radeon forum that doesn't focus on games only. Maybe I should turn to the producer directly?
Otherwise, any idea on this is appreciated. Thanks.

Mini display port reminds me too much of ACD. Nice idea, but quick back-pedal. MDP makes sense for docking a MacBookPro to that one display, but other than that - the jury's still out. Noticed they haven't introduced a 30" MDP? Or ANY new displays for that matter... WHY IS APPLE GIVING THE DISPLAY MARKET TO DELL??? Love Apple but "been there done that" with their efforts at proprietary connections. Firewire is the only one that succeeded because it IS truly lightyears beyond USB (any version). And it didn't hurt that Sony agreed. Just installed a flashed PC 4870 from Applemecanix on eBay and reveling at the increased number of jitter-free movie windows I can have open compared to Mac Edition 3870 (great card BTW). The flashed PC version has 2 DVI ports (only 1 is dual link) and 1 GB of memory compared to half that on the "official" upgrade. And you can make an offer on eBay and get it MUCH cheaper than the "upgrade" version. My Applemecanix was an EFX card by the way. You can find instructions on the internet for flashing any number of PC 4870's but I calculated it was worth paying someone else $100 bucks to do it, with the right of return. If you are hard-pressed for cash and have a boot-camp windows installation you might be better off flashing it yourself. You'll have to buy a flashable PC version (retailers have gotten smart, they're charging more for these) and get the Mac power cords direct from ATI/AMD.
Apple has made a decision to sit on the sidelines in the display market. Accept it. On the whole the platform has never been better I LOVE SNOW LEOPARD!
