Is the Audio Mixer Working?

Is the Audio Mixer Working?
I am following step by step in Steve Grisetti’s book to learn how to use the Audio Mixer on the Action Bar, in the Tools section.
As I read the information, when playing a video project (with audio), opening the Audio Mixer should
(1) allow volume adjustment, and
(2) reveal operating audio-level meters (which are like VU meters in old analogue equipment).
HOWEVER, I find that opening the Tools function immediately STOPS the video from playing, of course then also stopping anything related to the Audio Mixer.
So, how does one open/activate the Audio Mixer (or anything under the Tools function) while the video (including audio) is playing?
Thank you,
Howard
P.S.  I'm editing this post to add the following:
In my continuing practice with this new-to-me program, I just discovered the "Adjustment" function of the upper menu bar.  Similar to the operation of the Tools function, as soon as I click on the function, my playing video/audio project STOPS.  I cannot edit the engage the volume adjustment while the project is running.
While it's generally unreasonable for such a beginner as myself to state that I know how this program is supposed to operate, I have read both in Steve's book and in this user forum that audio should be adjustable WHILE the project is running.

Yes, I located Adobe’s so-called "Help", but it seems to offer only thematic tutorials, not a traditional help function in the form of an Alphabetical Reference Index.
With the traditional Alphabetical Index, one need only provide a word or two -- such as "Snap To" or "Sharpen" -- and the Help function takes the user DIRECTLY to a definition or explanation of that particular function or concept, not unlike a very comprehensive Index at the back of a well-written manual.
I also own the FULL version of Photoshop CS5. The Help function has gradually moved to referencing Adobe’s Internet support, but there is still the traditional indexed "how to" and other help explanations, though they are more difficult to access than in the older versions of the program.
I am a new user who (1) is trying with considerable time and effort to learn PE-11 and (2) has purchased Steve’s book.  However, because I have not found an Index-type source of help associated with PE-11, I have come this User Form far more often than would be necessary if Adobe had spent the time and money to include an Alphabetical Reference Index as part of the program, and not merely some general "how to" categories on their website.
If blame is to apply, it is on Adobe.  I have no idea how any truly new user (defined as never before having used ANY video editing software) could get by without the two of you (Steve and Hunt) on this User Forum.  I assume you are both paid consultants or contractors for Adobe, and I hope they’re paying each of you a Caterpillar-Front-Loader full of cash for what you do.  But really, a lot of small items posted to this User Forum would be unnecessary if Adobe had incorporated with PE-11 the type of Alphabetical Reference Index suggested above.
My two cents.

  • How do I increase my sound using the Audio Mixer?

I needed to raise the volume of a clip I had in my Premiere Elements project.  Somehow, I managed to do it.  When I play the clip with the Audio Mixer open, I see the slider bar way at the top at a +3 which is great for the clip I have.  I have another clip from the same event and I also need to raise the sound to a +3.  I THOUGHT I had selected the clip, and then simply slid the bar up.  I did this a few days ago.  Now I am trying to raise the volume on another clip by sliding the bar up but it has no effect.  I may have edited the start and end of the clip but I wouldn't think that would have any impact.  I would think that any volume changes could be made to a trimmed clip.  Anyone have any thoughts?  Thanks.

Have you explored Normalizing the clips....Clip Menu/Audio Options/Audio Gain
Please see "Adjust the Input Level of Clips" in the following Adobe document

Generalizing...you should be able to volume change an audio clip that has been trimmed.

  • Adjusting multiple mono audio tracks with the Audio Mixer

Anybody know how to adjust multiple mono audio tracks simultaneously with the audio mixer? If your tracks are stereo, one fader will control two faders or audio tracks. Suppose you have 6 mono audio tracks and don't want to pull down each fader separately. Is there a way to pull down one fader and have the others locked to it, or controlled by it?

Not with the sliders, but you can adjust levels with ctrl [ and ctrl ] (I think, not at fcp right now).
The autoselect buttons (to the right of the lock icons, at the head of the timeline) tell fcp which track to adjust...

  • I can't hear the narration track over the audio, what do I do? And where is the "audio mixer"?

Just downloaded Premiere Elements 12 and lost my favorite audio music (wish I could bring it over from 11 somehow), so I drug a new clip in the audio track and now I can't hear my narration track. Also, can you pull up projects made in 11 with Premiere 12? Should I delete 11 off my computer? Also, where is the audio mixer?

The Audio Mixer is under the Tools menu in Expert view or under the Tools drop-down menu at the top of the interface.

Try plugging the headphones in and gently wiggling them around for a few seconds. It may be that the sensor that tells the iPhone that headphones are plugged in has gotten stuck. If this doesn't work, they try a reset (hold down Sleep/Wake and Home all the way until the Apple logo appears on the screen).

  • Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Overview of audio and the Audio Mixer

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/overview-audio-audio-mixer.html

The last section "Customize a VST effect in an options window" for a beginner working their way through the manual makes no sense. VST and how to apply it is not explained, and no explanation appears prior in the manual. To be blunt, it's just a nonsense.

  • What do you do to control the audio mix in FCP 10.1.2?

I have a major problem with FCP 10.  I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do a simple audio level adjustment using the keyframe editor.
I have a audio-video clip that is using dual channel mono audio.  I have a shotgun mic on one channel and a handheld mic on the other.
I've gotten as far as getting both incoming channels to playback on both outgoing channels.
What I need to do is to shut off one channel or the other, periodically, in order to preserve the quality of the audio.
How do I do that?  FCP won't let me use keyframes and the range editor wasn't any help either.  It should be simple but it seems that it isn't.  What do I have to do to cause FCP to do this very simple operation?
    Thanks!!

Thank You, Tom for your help!  You are right, some basic instruction would be most helpful as FCP is not very intuitive in its layout and usage of terms.  So I think.  I understand the keyframe concept and ramping audio.  Why I didn't think of that earlier I don't know although it seems that FCP should've ramped it up or down (but not down then up, or vice versa) with only two.  While I was giving an earlier reply to you, FCP took it upon itself to ramp the audio.  Why it did that, I don't know; but it did.
I managed to muddle my way through the project and got it produced as well as I will have time to.  I had a number of problems with the audio taken at the shoot; most of it related to me not being able to set up a full fledged mixing console at the shoot site (I had to be completely portable).
I will try to get instruction in FCP.  Problem is, I don't shoot video often enough to retain much of any editing skills that I do learn.  Nevertheless, I'll work on it.
Again, Thank You for your patience and help!!

  • How do I prevent the audio mixer from muting output on windows startup?

I bought the HS-1200 headset some time ago and it's almost the perfect headset if it weren't for a few annoying things. The most annoying thing is that the microphone is way to soft and during online gaming, my team mates can hardly hear me. I never had that problem with my previous headsets. Apparently, Creative is aware of the problem and they have tried to solve it with a driver update - which did not help at all (for most people) since IMO this is a hardware issue. So I don't expect to see that problem solved ever.
But another annoying problem I have - which I do think can be solved quite easily (but I don't know how, which is why I'm asking here) - is that since I installed the HS-1200, my audio's output is always muted when I start up Windows. So I always have to start the mixer (by double clicking the speaker icon in the systray) and unmute the audio. Audio will stay unmuted till the next Windows session at which time it will be muted again.
    Any way to prevent this?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you very much. I found it with Tools as the starting point, then found the warn me message in Advanced and, unclicked it as you said.
I'm hoping it will work but my guess is that I'll have to reboot or at least close and restart the browser.
    Thanks again!

  • How can I map a keyboard shortcut to the reacord button in the Audio Mixer Panel?

I have been recording voiceovers in Premiere Pro CS5 for a while, but I would like to improve my work flow. Each time I record a take, I first press the record button (labeled as B below) with the mouse cursor and then press the Play button with the Spacebar keyboard shortcut. After I record the audio, I hit Stop and this toggles the record button off at the same time. I then must hit the record button again with the mouse to start the process over again.
Is there a way to map a keyboard shortcut to the record button in the audio panel so that I don't have to touch the mouse when recording voiceovers?

There is not currently a shortcut for this. That's a good feature request, though. You can submit feature requests here.

  • HT1750 My computer has no audio. It had been working and last week the audio stopped working.

I have an Intel-based iMac and there is no audio. software: OS x 10.9.2
    I have no audio.

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Run Software Update and make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. If you've installed a software equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and restart.
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    14. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
