Is the Burn  Folder bugged

I always back up my files to DVD using the Burn folder.
Recently every disk has been a failure, it only backs up an alias of the files. so if I back up a folder called 'pictures' for instance, the result is just a 1mb alias of the same name on the DVD.
Is their a bug in a recent software update I have downloaded ?
I downloaded an old application called Burn and this works fine.
Anyone else found this please ?

You keep referring to "the" Burn Folder as if it is a unique object with a required location. You (or your family member) can create as many burn folders as you want, and they can be wherever you put them. If this particular burn folder is on the Desktop, it may well have been created there. You can move it wherever you want it (including the trash, if you and your family are finished with it)

  • Burn Folder - What Is The Burn Folder's Proper Location?

    Good morning.
This morning when I started up the computer, upon reaching the Desktop, the Burn Folder [ http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/7752/screencapturetb4.png ] was located on the Desktop.
A family member who isn't here right now was using the computer last night, so I can't ask them where they dragged the Burn Folder from.
I would like to put the Burn Folder back in its proper location, but I don't know where that is.
Could someone please find where it's located in their computer, and tell me.
    Thanks.

  • TA24563 Where is the burn folder

Hello. I found a tutorial on the web saying how to burn a dvd from Aperture. It said to export to the burn folder on the desktop. I don't see any burn folder on the desktop. I'm using OSX 10.6.8.
    Thank you.

In the Finder go to File->New Burn Folder
create the Burn Folder and name it what you like. Then when you export from Aperture select this folder as the destination.  Once done exporting go back to Finder and burn the folder to disk.

  • I transferred photos from my camera to my computer and created a burn folder.  I recorded the burn folder on a DVD but it will not play on my DVD player.  What am I doing wrong?

I transferred photos from my camera to  burn folder on my macbook Pro.  Made a DVD from the burn folder but it will not play on my DVD player.  What am I doing wrong?

How did you do this burn? Did you use a program like iDVD?  A DVD player requires that the data on the DVD is recorded in the proper format: MPEG-2.  A program like iDVD will do this.  There are other programs available that can do the proper coding (Roxio 'Toast' for example), but iDVD has the most features and is easy to use.  It is no longer available from Apple, but if you search on Amazon, you can find 'iLife 11', a suite of programs including iDVD.  It will function properly on Apple's current operating system, but it cannot make a High-Definition (Blue-Ray) presentation.  It is Standard Definition only, as are all regular DVD's. One good way to present photos on a TV is to make a slidesow in iPhoto, then export that slideshow to iDVD, where it will be properly formatted for a DVD player.  Or, iDVD can make its own slideshow of up to 99 photos.  HTH.

  • Burn Folder Bug

I don't know how but I have a redundant Burn Folder permenantly showing in my sidebar in Finder (Lion). I can't select it, I can't right click it, I can't burn a disc from it, it's still there if I Force Quit Finder and it's still there after re-boot. Essentially I can't get rid of it at all!
It's the one titled 'Native Instruments' - Any thoughts on how to get rid of this?!?! It's annoying me now...

Nope, that didn't do it either...! Do I also need to delete the other two below it:
    Or anything else?

  • How do I put JPEGs in a burn folder without having them be aliases? I see the JPEGs in "Preview" but can't fugre out how to duplicate the originals so I can burn them without them being aliases.

How do I copy JPEGs that I see in "Preview" without getting aliases? I want to burn a new disk with copied originals, not aliases?

You can create a new folder and drag the originals into it and burn that as well, the "burn folder" concept just makes it easier to not to have to put everything away later.
Just delete the burn folder and your done.

  • Can I choose the optical drive when durning the contents of a burn folder?

I just purchased an external optical drive for my Mac and I want to use it to burn contents from a burn folder. The problem is, each time I click the burn button, the OS still looks for a disc in the Mac's built in optical drive. I've tried to look for an option that will allow me to change this, but there seems to be none. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm no expert, and it is not clear at what stage you are in your attempt to burn to your external drive.  If you have not yet created a burn folder, open finder, go to the file menu, and you will find an option to create a burn folder. It will appear on your desktop .Once you have dropped whichever files you want into the burn folder, right click on it, and you will be asked to which disk you wish to burn it.  From there you can install the folder onto your external drive.Good luck.

I can't move photos from iPhoto to my secondary hard drive or to a burn folder.  I have never had a problem with this before.  This is something new.   They will not drop into either folder.  Nothing happens.
I checked my secondary harddrive and there is plenty of memory.
I emptied my burn folder but the photos still will not drop into it.
I created a new burn folder, no luck with this either.
230 photos is the maximum size of the events I am trying to move from iPhoto to save elsewhere.
I have shut down and restarted my computer.   No change. The photos still will not drop out of iPhoto.
My Mac Computer Storage shows that I have 62.2GB free out of 249.2GB (movies, photos and contacts taking up the most space)
My Lacie External Harddrive (2TB capacity) shows that I have 1.79TB available.  It shows that 207,729,520,640 bytes (207.73 GB on disk) are used.
I have never had this problem before.  It is usually very easy to move my photos from iPhoto.
I am not a computer expert (I work in surgery so don't have a need for lots of computer knowledge) so please explain in simple terms.
Thank you so much for any help you can provide.
    I really appreciate it.

YES Terence!  Thank you. Exporting allowed me to move my photos from iPhoto into the Burn Folder on my desktop.   But that doesn't explain why I'm having to go that route now.   Have I done something (accidentally changed some setting) on my computer that will not allow me to just click and drag anymore?   I really liked the convenience of the click and drag option.
I don't have the time tonight to export and burn a lot of CD/DVDs.  I'll try that tomorrow and make sure my photos are moving properly.  I also need to export photos to my external hard drive to make sure that route is working.
Wouldn't you know that my Apple Care Plan runs out this Wednesday?!  I need to make sure everything is working properly before that expires.
Thank you so much for your help.   I really, really appreciate it.

  • How do I remove a few files from a burn folder?

I cannot believe I have to ask such a simple question; WHY is everyhting so difficult and complicated with Macs?! I have a DVD in the Mac; I put a number of files into the 'burn folder' which appears automatically. It tells me there are too many files to burn (I have no way of calculating the exact amount to fill the DVD, so have to use trial & error).
On a Windows PC there would be a little button saying 'remove'; you simply highlight a few folders at a time & click 'remove' - & bingo - they vanish from the folder to be burned. But it seems I have to actually send these 'alias' files to the trash in order to get them out of the burn folder? I saw another discussion on here that suggests this will delete the original files? HOW stupid and badly designed is that?!! I tried sending some to the trash but this takes forever; it does not seem to have deleted the originals, but I would like someone to confirm this please - and please can someone tell me how to delete the contents / some of the contents of a burn folder if I've made a simple mistake in what I've added to it? There HAS to be some way of getting rid of files without deleting the originals - surely?!

Pardon me for jumping in, but in my experience deleting an alias from a burn folder (or elsewhere) leaves the original intact.  I don't know why deleting the alias files takes so long on your system - on mine, a mid-2011 mini with 8GB RAM running 10.7.5, it happens pretty immediately.  I didn't initially like the Burn Folder concept, but since I've gotten used to it, it's OK - although it seems to add some unnecesary complexity if I want, for example, to move some (but not all) of the files in a folder onto a CD/DVD.
To delete aliases of files that I don't want burned, I (right-click) (control-click) (two finger tap) on the alias, then select "Move to Trash".  That's not the only way it can be done, of course.
As baltwo used it, I think "WAG" is supposed to indicate a sort of guess.  A "burning maven" would be a person with extensive knowledge of burning CDs and DVDs on a Mac.  Since none have weighed in, there must be some sort of maven convention going on.
But, yes, what you've described should work fine.  If you're super concerned about files being deleted when you delete an alias to them and don't have an up-to-date backup, just make a copy of the file (not the alias) in a different folder.
    Good luck

  • Smart folder in iphoto to burn folder on desktop

    Hi.
I set up a smart folder in IPHOTO (collecting all photo's taken on a vacation) and have set up a burn folder on the desktop.
I can't figure out how to get the smart folder to the burn folder. It won't move from within Iphoto or via the finder.
Is what I want to do possible in Tiger and Iphoto?
    I have a new Macbook.
    thanks in advance.

If by :burn to the desktop: you mean copy, then no. You have to either select all and drag to a folder on the desktop or use the File->Export->File Export menu route.
If you want to burn directly to a disk with those images then click on the smart album and use the File->Export->File Export menu route but this time selecting the blank mounted disk on the desktop as the final destination.

  • Burn Folder and Burning CDs

I know that if I insert a CD I can copy files from my HD and paste them into the CD and then burn the CD.
But, I also want to take advantage of burn folders. If I make a burn folder and drag files from the HD into the burn folder I only get the aliases (I've heard this is what you do- simply drag and drop). What I want to know is if I go ahead and burn the folder will it burn the aliases or a copy of the original file. OR, do I have to do the same as with a CD i.e. make a copy and paste it into the burn folder. Thanks.

Furthermore, if you get info on the burn folder it only will give the size of the aliases. Does anyone know how to find the actually size of all the contained files?

  • Burn Folder on DVD

This is sort of a generic iphoto question and since i have this version i decided to post here...I have an imac and also a power mac. I downloaded all my photos to the imac and created a burn folder, and loaded all my pics into that folder, burned a DVD, and imported them all onto my iphoto on my power mac. I can view these photos on iphoto, but can not do anything else...i.e. email, drag to desktop...UNLESS I have the burn folder DVD running. Is there any way to change this so that i can do whatever I want with these photos, without having to have the DVD in?

Check your preferences on the Power mac (in iPhoto '08 - iPhoto menu ==> preferences ==> advanced ) and be sure that "copy items to iPhoto Library is checked" is checked. It sounds like it is not and that iPhoto did what you requested - referenced your photos rather than copying them
if that is the case you will need to delete the referenced photos so you do not have both the copied and the referenced photos in your library

  • Burn Folder gone bizarro!

I created a Burn Folder in the MacOS 10.4.5 Finder today, with the intent of taking images from my iPhoto library and organizing a re-usable "staging area" to create CD-Rs from a catalogue of select images.
As I understand it, a Burn Folder is supposed to only contain aliases of objects you put in it. In this way, Thr Burn Folder can be re-arranged or re-used without taking up lots of space on your hard drive.
Guess what? I tried exporting images from iPhoto (5) to the Burn Folder in the Finder using the "Export" command. When I checked the Burn Folder, there were real image files there; no aliases. (To the tune of 135 MB!) Was I doing something wrong? I tried dragging select images from the iPhoto window to a new Burn Folder. Same result.

    Hello Walt,
In the Panther all the files were copied inside the hard disk before actual burn. In Tiger workflow in Finder is different, aliases of the selected files are created in the burn folder. This applies to Finder but not to applications.
If you are exporting files from application they really get exported, iPhoto will write actual files to disk. You should either use iPhotos internal Burn command or export to another folder than Burn folder. Then use Finder command to collect your files for burning.

  • Strange burn folder behaviour; lost files, sort of...

I was trying to back up several folders from iTunes onto a DVD. I did this earlier today, and it worked fine. When I tried it again, by highlighting 5 folders and dragging them to a second burn folder, the following happened:
    1. The folders did not appear in the burn folder (but they DID disappear from the original folder containing them, which should NOT happen!).
    2. When I double click on the burn folder in the finder, the burn folder and all 5 of the subfolders that are supposed to be in the burn folder open simultaneously in 6 different windows in the finder.
    3. Using a terminal window, the 5 folders are missing from the iTunes directory.
    4. When I run iTunes (or use SpotLight), the folders are shown in the normal place, and everything seems OK. But, if I look for the files using "find" in a terminal window, I don't see them.
    5. These folders are not easily replaceable--I'm reluctant to shutdown my machine--I'm not sure whether the files will still be accessible to iTunes after a reboot!
Any advice on what to do would be appreciated!
    Thanks,

      Mac OS X (10.4.2)

#1- Burn folders are created if you insert a blank CD/DVD except when responding to a pre-initiated burn request (like pressing the burn button in iTunes)
#2- They may be "anchors" (don't know what else to call them) for streaming media files. If you clicked on a streaming video link, it is likely that those files-usually about 4KB were downloaded at that time, normally they are removed once the stream is played. If they're not, delete them yourself.
FYI-.ram is extension for RealPlayer files. .asf.asx is Advanced Streaming Format

  • Burn folder exclusions?

Is it possible to define a burn folder then specifically exclude a folder from it?
Since I don't have Time Machine, I back up to DVD (my iPhoto library on one, everything else on the other).
One folder I've had trouble backing up cleanly is the Documents folder - mainly because of the Microsoft User Data folder placed in there by Office - I don't want that folder there in the first place but there apparently is no solution to get it wholly out of the Documents folder (yes, I can 'alias' it out of there but a burn will still include it and eat up 20MB on the DVD). I have brought this up in the Mac Office forums, but the respondents fail to see my point (if it's not user-generated files, it shouldn't be in Documents in the first place! But I digress...!)
So, I had to pour all my user-created documents into a My Documents folder in ~, alias that back into Documents, and then point the burn folder to My Documents instead.
So, if I can exclude the MUD folder from the burn folder, I can move the content of the My Documents folder back into Documents and eliminate this 'kludge'.

    Hi,
I don't know anything about exclusions since I don't use burn folders. But here's something that should help you:
I hate developers that misuse the Documents folder for their app's stuff. As you have noticed Microsoft is one of them. But at least you can move the MUD from ~/Documents to ~/Library/Preferences. It won't get recreated if you do it that way and everything works the same. Office checks both locations for it. Seems like someone at MS thought about this (to my knowledge) undocumented feature. I know that it works for Office 2004 and 2008. I never tried it with v.X though...
    Have fun!
