Is the Burning Speed Issue Ever Going To Be Fixed?

Used to burn a CD in 3 minutes, now 18-20 minutes. Like a lot of people, it will now only burn at 4X speed. Have seen a lot of posts on this, but never a response on what is going on. Don't have the burner or music on external, so it eliminates that issue. Somehow something forces the speed down, and I have tried all kinds of different cd's and they all behave the same. Has anyone been able to pinpoint or fix this problem?

The difference between USB 2 and USB 3 is mainly one of supported data transfer rates, the basics of the protocol (identifying devices, bus arbitration, etc) are the same.  The differences don't impact a keyboard at all, since the fastest data rate a keyboard is capable of generating under normal use (~150 words per minute by a phenomenally skilled typist) is many orders of magnitude slower than the average USB data transfer rate - probably quite literally a million times slower.
Most keyboards actually negotiate the port they are using down to USB 1.1 mode, as they make best use of that particular data transfer scenario (less data more often with less latency on the initial packet of a transfer).
Generally, when people ask about a keyboard being "updated" to USB 3, they mean they want the additional USB ports on the keyboard to support USB 3, not that teh keyboard itself use USB 3.
In any case, your situation sounds more like a bad keyboard to me...have you tried using a different Apple Extended Keyboard with the iMac?

  • How do I lower the burn speed?

Using strictly the apple Disc utility, how do I control the burn speed?

I just went through this this week as I'm new to iDVD. When you're in Disk Utility and go to burn it, there is a drop down next to the drive that the disk is in. I think it lists the drive, I'm not in front of my Mac now. Click on that, and you will then see the option to change the drive speed.
I just did this for the first time last night and am finally getting clean DVD burns. Before I just let iDVD do the whole thing from render to burn and the playback kept hanging up on the DVD player. Going at 1x's seems to have corrected it for me.

  • How do you reduce the burn speed on a pc???

I've been getting the dreaded 4310 error and discovered, through searching the discussions, that reducing the burn speed could solve the problem. However, I can't find anything on how to do that on a pc? I have a compaq nc6000 laptop.
I've had the problem only rarely before today but, for some reason, it is now happening on every cd I try to burn.
    Thanx!

From the Edit menu select Preferences. Click the Advanced tab, then the Burning tab. You can set the burn speed there.

  • A WAY TO CHANGE THE BURN SPEED????

    Hi,
I posted a similar question before, but didnt get a definative answer... I'll ask it in a more concise way. Is there a way to change the burn speed in DVD SP2? I didn't see any settings relating to that.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

There is a work around. In DVD Pro, "format" with the output device set to disc and the format to ".img". When this is finished, open Disk Utility and "convert" the .img file to a CD/DVD master (.cdr). This file can then be used to burn to a blank DVD. If you click the options arrow in the burn dialog before beginning the burn, you can select a speed other than "maximum". Not elegant, but it works. My HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B DVD drive only succeeds at burning at its maximum rate about 1/3 of the time. However, at 12X it has been quite reliable.

  • Changing the Burning Speed in iTunes

Has the option for changing the burning speed been taken away in the most recent version of iTunes. I thought this used to be an option under iTunes/Preferences, but I can't seem to find it. Any information about this would be appreciated.

  • Can I change the burn speed in compressor 4

First time trying to burn a 12 minute DVD from Compressor. I got an error that says use a different brand DVD (i have used memorex dvd's before with no problem) or burn at a slower speed. How do I adjust the burn speed?

Well, given that you can write an img, I'd guess the most likely culprits to be the media (hopefully) or the optical drive. Easiest step is to try a different brand. Bad batches are occasionally manufactured. FWIW, I am a long-time user of Verbatim and have rarely had a problem.
So try another brand and see whether it will burn from the disk image.
If it does not, try a short section of a different movie. And if that failed, it would point strongly toward the drive.
    Good luck.

  • Itunes can't burn this cd because the burn speed is too fast for your cd...

For the first time since upgrading to 10.3.9 I'm trying to burn a data disc from iTunes to backup some files. It fails every time and ruins the blank CD. This is getting expensive!
The CDs are Phillips CD-R 52x. (Yes, I've used blanks from this very box before the 10.3.9 upgrade and it never failed before.) iTunes was set to 24x burn then changed to "maximum possible" for the burn speed.
Most times it looks like it's burning the playlist but around the 5th file it spits it out and gives the error "itunes can't burn this cd because the burn speed is too fast for your cd burner or media". Sometims it just locks up itunes with "checking media" and I have to force quit iTunes. Then the disc is ruined. It won't even show up in Finder.
Ugh. Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Does anyone have problems with their mac having a Medium-write error? Mine is totally out of hand... I have wasted countless CDs, I've purchased the Mac CDs, and I have tried to minimize the burn speed... The problem continues, and I need this for work.

My mac keeps saying medium-write error, and it's become out of hand. I've done all the suggested things to prevent it, by buying apple CDs, minimizing the burn speed, and restarting my computer... I need to burn CDs for my job, and I am a firm apple supporter... This is just out of control it took me 90 mins to finally burn a CD, because I had to go through 10 other CDs... HELP.

I doubt they're any better than anything else.
I may have an Apple CD-R around here somewhere...

  • So how do you set the burn speed?

I'm having problems with home movies burned to good quality media (TDK -R). They appear to degrade and become unplayable within months. The discs are stored correctly and not misused or dirty - this is happening to numerous discs being used on numerous players (inc. the iMac they were originally burned on).
Having read through previous discussions, I'm trying to ensure I burn at the slowest speed possible to see if that helps, however I can't find anyway to specify a burn speed in iDVD. Preferences are set to "best quality".
Thanks if you can help (I have looked through these forums and "Help" before posting
    iMac G4 800 17 / 768 MB SD RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Unless you are using a different burner that what came with your 17" iMac G4, I am not sure you need to worry about burn speed. It is already a slower burner. That said, you could create a disc image from with iDVD and then use the disk utility to burn the image to a DVD. Doing this will give you a dialog box allowing you to select a burn speed if a variable burn speed is supported.
I suspect the discs themselves. First, I hope you haven't attached a paper sticky label to these? That would be the sure fire problem. Next, it could be a bad batch or maybe your burner just doesn't like TDK? It happens. Verbatims are usually very Mac friendly.

  • My iPhone5 has terrible Network connection. It rarely works at the normal speed-if ever. I usually get 3G or 1x network dozens of times a day. My phone also gets pretty hot when i try to use any data for more than a few minutes.

My iPhone5 network connection has been terrible for the past week and a half. My phone is no more than a year old so I don't see why it would be a problem with the phone. When I try to use the internet or look for apps or anything like that, anything that uses data really, it takes FOREVER if it even loads! Most of the time it won't even load. My network changes from LTE(which doesn't work well) to 3G(which works even less) and then to 1x(which basically doesn't work at all). This happens dozens of times a day. It's getting quite irritating. I've tried turning my phone off and letting it sit for a while and that does nothing. I'd really prefer NOT to restore my phone. What is the deal??!

Are you broadcasting your SSID? Sometimes this can cause a problem connecting. Is this Cisco router running any turbo modes or special preparatory protocols.
There are no know issues with Wi-Fi connectivity except on first connection; and the chance of 2 devices having the exact same issue is very unlikely. This sounds like something to do with your wireless router.
Have you tried to connect to another Wi-Fi hotspot elsewhere?
Do you have any 2.4 GHz wireless phones or security system that could interfere with connection?

  • Is mail ever going to be fixed?

Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks, my macmail has been difficult - slow to load new emails, jumbled up sender listings, just generally a problem.  Is there ever going to be an update to get it back to normal?

My Mail works fine. Thus I suspect the problems you describe are related to software problems with your own OSX installation. And a software update is not the issue.
To troubleshoot your software problem, you could try a few things, roughly in this order:
If you have any third-party mail related software, uninstall it.
Try a safe boot (restart, hold down shift until you see the Apple logo). This does some diagnostic testing and then starts up without third-party added on software. If this eliminates the problems with Mail, then you know the problem is with some third-party software. A safe boot doesn't fix anything, but it tells you where the problem is. Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? If the safe boot does indeed eliminate the problems with Mail, then you can try to eliminate the third party software that is causing the problem.
try a test user account: create a new user account. Recreate your mail accounts in that new account and see how Mail runs. If the problems are gone, then you know the problems are in your old user account.
Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
sometimes there is a problem with OSX that Disk Utility can't fix, and the solution is to reinstall OSX over your current installation. That usually works for OSX problems.

  • In the latest Lion update, has the dropping WiFi issue really truly been totally fixed?

Anyone still seeing the wifi dropping off, out of the blue, for no reason, issue as was the haunting problem in previous Lion releases?
For those that had the dropping off issue (and there were many).
Did this last Lion release/update really really absolutely totally fix the issue for everyone?
    Totally? Completely? Honestly?

I have updated two machines directly to 10.7.2 and have had no issues with either machine.
Are you sure these problems are not as a result of the wireless router used rather than a Lion problem?
I have seen many wireless faults in the past caused by the routers which have been fixed by updating the router firmware.
Maybe those who are posting wireless problems need to also state the make and model of router they are using to see if a pattern emerges?

  • How do you change the burn speed when making a CD?

I have tried burning my iTunes purchases onto a CD, and when I try to play them back on my CD player, nothing happens. It will play back in iTunes on the Mac, but not on my CD player or in my car.
I suspect it has to do with the speed at which they burn, but I have no idea how to change that?
