Is the canon 24-70 mm 2.8l ii a worthwhile investment for the 70d?

The twins, the 24-70mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 are arguably the best zoom lenses made.  Bar none.
If you need and want the best there is, there is no other choice.  However, do you?  Most people don't.
The thought about the focal length on the crop body is nonsense if it fits your needs.  That statement can be largely ignored.
If possibile try one first as they are very expensive.  But the best usually is!
This pair is what I use 90% of the time on a 1 series "crop" body.  After having these, I would not be happy to have anything less.
I am off today to shoot the JOCO Fair Parade with my 1D Mk IV and both of these lenses.

  • Is the 70D significantly better than the 7D at handling high ISO situations?

I have a 6D and it has really spoiled me with it's low noise high ISO capabilities. I'm wondering if the 70D is significantly better than my 7D when it comes to handling high ISOs. It has the same sensor as the 6D and I really like that view screen on the 70D.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The 6D has a "full frame" sensor - physical dimensions are close to the 36mm x 24mm size of a 35mm film negative frame.
Both the 7D and 70D have APS-C sensors - physical dimensions are close to 22mm x 15mm and close to the same size of a negative frame from "Advanced Photo System - Class" size film.
While the 7D and 70D have sensors which are roughly the same size, the sensors themselves are very different because the 70D has the new dual-pixel AF technology.

  • 7D Mark II missing a simple feature from the 70D and Rebels

Please add, by firmware update, the 3x digital zoom (1:1 pixels, really 2.875x) in video feature present in the 70D and many of the Rebel cameras. I can attest to its usefulness from my use of it in my T2i. It's useful for astrophotography, specifically planetary astrophotography where large stacks of video frames are used to create a much better still than can be made any other way. It can also greatly extend the usefulness of a lens like the 18-135STM which would reach 135*1.6*2.875=621mm equivalent without the need to upscale. Finally, it would add the ability to take videos of, say, birds that are of the same resolution (resolving power, not pixel dimensions) as can be obtained from stills.
Ideally, it would be possible to smoothly zoom from full-frame to 1:1 and back using buttons on the back of the camera while shooting is in progress, but even the awkward menu item as it is implemented in the other cameras would be preferable to not having the feature at all.
Further, if it could be implemented while retaining dual pixel focusing (which the 70D does not) that would extend its usefulness even further to moving objects from stationary objects only.
The 7D2 looks to be a spectacular camera with a powerful feature set, which makes it all the more odd that this feature was left out.
    Thank you.

Digital zoom is not really zoom, it is in camera crop then enlarge which can be done in post process. It is considered gimmick for consumer market so you will not likely to find it in pro-targeted camera. Same thing with why you do not find those automatic shooting modes on pro camera. Thus, i think you will never see it implemented.

  • EOS Utility, wifi, the 70D and long exposure

    Greetings,
Can I use the wifi function on the 70D and EOS Utility function for take long exposures (1-5mins)  without any cables on the camera. Meaning, can the EOS utility accept or set exposure times above 30 seconds via wifi and the utility software?
My desire would be to have no wires on the camera body nor to my laptop, yet have greater than 30 seconds exposure control.

  • Connected wirelessly to Canon printer MX340. Duplex printing option is grayed out for me but not on my daughter's non-Mac laptop or husband's PC which is connected to the printer. Mine has two-sided option available at the Apple store. Any ideas?

We use a Canon MX340 series printer/fax/scanner. My husband has his PC hooked to it and my daughter prints wirelessly from it with no problem with her non-Mac laptop. I have trouble printing. Often it does not print and I have to delete the job from the queue. Other times it will print OK but two-sided printing is always grayed out in my printing options. When I took it to the Apple store and printed on their network (selecting their printer) the two-sided option was available. Makes me think the printer is set up wrong, but I am not certain. A fw times at home when trying to print I got an error message about incompatible fonts, but it printed anyway after deleting the job and starting over. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

    OK, just an update.
Two years into this, I still find I can only do full duplex printing by using Windows XP running inside of VMWare. I've had occasional, ephemeral luck with duplex printing, but nothing long lasting.
I've tried this in Tiger and Leopard (now at 10.5.6), and I've had this issue with Canon printers MP780 iP4300 and MP610, direct connected to my Core2Duo 17" MBP. I also have this issue when printing over a network, but that's a much harder problem to solve.
Currently, this is my #1 most pressing issue for my Mac, because not being able to print from a computer when you print a lot is a really big drag, and using VMWare all the time is also a really big drag. Other people posting seem to be able to print in Duplex using the very same printers. What could be wrong with my MBP? I see the duplex box option, but most of the time it's grayed out as if my printer doesn't support duplex.
I've tried direct selecting printer drivers from the system preferences, but nothing seems to have an effect. And this is off of a clean Leopard install.
My wife now has similar problems with her new MBP - the Canon print drivers (CUSP & non CUSP) aren't allowing the Duplex box to be checked.
I am willing to pay good money to anyone who thinks they can fix this problem.
    Thank you,

  • My Canon Rebel is no longer recording RAW images but set for RAW in manual mode.

I've tried changing memory card. My card's been recently formatted. I tried setting quality as RAW only not both RAW + Jpg...but still not getting RAW images in upload. Lightroom settings are fine and able to upload RAW from my Canon G12. I tried clearing setting but no affect. Is a factory reset a possible solution?

    Debbie wrote:
Tahdah, tahdah and just plain dahhhh!!! I figured it out and if I share the answer I'll sound just plain stupid. But here goes in case someone else has the same problem, or should I say the same misunderstanding. In short, as it turns out I didn't have the quality set on RAW. I had checked, and rechecked the menu>quality window several times and each time misread it until I was just looking in the manual. In it the list of quality options is in a single column. In camera RAW is in a second column next to L with a quarter circle. I thought I had RAW selected. I'd been saying that the letter L was there. The manual, thank goodness, had the single column and said that was a JPG. Here I was reading about battery checks etc and there it was. I had been checking settings a while back and managed to change from RAW to JPG and not figured that I'd not changed back correctly. Whew!!! Call me dumb but I'm stupidly delighted right now ;o) Thanks to all those who tried to help.
OK, Debbie, maybe you'll feel better after I confess to doing something every bit as stupid. Recently my wife and I were driving home from a visit to our daughter's house in Philadelphia, and I used the opportunity to drop off my two 7D's and a couple of lenses at Canon's Jamesburg service facility for their usual cleaning and inspection. (I'm a CPS Gold Member, so it's an included perk.) I knew from previous experience that this would result in a partial clearing of the camera's user settings. Some items, like my name and copyright notice, would be left intact; but others, like my autofocus microadjustment settings, would be wiped. I was ready for that, had long since committed the AFMA's to a spreadsheet, etc.
But alas, I overlooked the fact that the quality setting that you cite above was one of those that would revert to its factory default. And the default is high-resolution JPEG, not RAW. (I always use RAW, and my favorite photo editor, Digital Photo Professional, does a crummy job on JPEGs.) So a week later I blithely walked into a moderately important photo shoot with one of my cameras set to JPEG. Fortunately, the other camera I was using, an almost new 5D Mark III, hadn't been to Jamesburg and was correctly set to RAW. But about two thirds of the photos I took were JPEGs, so I'll have to block out a few hours, sit down with Irfanview or some other editor, and try to fix things up. It doesn't much matter when I get it done, and the world won't come to an end, but it's pretty damned embarrassing.
So there you have it. We all make mistakes.

  • Canon 5D Mark III Raw Files Not Viewable in Finder for Snow Leopard 10.6.8

    System specs:
Computer: Mid 2008 Mac Pro - Dual Quad Core
OS: OS X 10.6.8 (includes the most recent Digital Camera Raw Updates)
    Camera: Canon 5D Mark III
    Problem:
Finder can not preview the thumbnails from this camera.  While not that big of a deal (I can use Lightroom, Bridge, etc to view these) it is a bit of an annoyance when transfering files around from one volume to another.
According to this Apple support page -   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3825?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US   -  I may need to update iPhoto, in order for the Digital Camera Raw Updates to work (specifically 3.12 from last year that addressd the 5D3's raw files).
As a pro photographer, I have ZERO use for iPhoto.  But, I would be willing to spend the $15 for the newest version of iPhoto, if I knew that would solve the Finder thumbnail problem.
I would love a definitive answer, without having to call Apple and paying the "per-incident support fee."

I manually installed the latest RAW update (3.13 I think - for 10.6.8) .... worked for me.
    (auto-update didn't do **** about raw update)
    now aperture and os-x (10.6.8) show the 5dmk3 raw's.

  • Canon 5D Mark II FCP Tutorial Video and FCP Plugin for Sonic Fire Pro 5.1

For those of you using Final Cut Pro 6 to edit 1080p video from the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, there is a video tutorial on lynda.com by Frank Rohmer entitled "Photography Video Workflow: Final Cut Pro + Canon 5D Mark II". I think it does a nice job of providing a workflow for FCP. YOu can view the introduction for free at this link: http://www.lynda.com/home/DisplayCourse.aspx?lpk2=48108.
There is a new plugin to allow Sonic Fire Pro 5.1 users to score their music directly from within Final Cut Pro and round-trip to Sonic Fire Pro 5.1. You can read about it and purchase it at: https://www.smartsound.com/sonicfire/finalcutpro.html.
I am just a satisfied user of both products and have no commercial link to either lynda.com or Smart Sound.

  • Need to get Canon Scanner Lide210 to be in scanner list in PSE10 for Mac

I have just upgraded from PSE9-Mac to PSE10-Mac on MacOS 10.7.2.  I have a CanoScan Lide210 and have enjoyed using the import feature in PSE9 and my Canon scanner for importing images.  I recall it being a process for the scanner to be placed in the list when installing PSE9, but can't seem to find where this process occurs.  I despise using the clunky scanning interface from Canon, and have really enjoyed the feature in PSE9.  I upgraded because I was having some lock-up issues during import and figured a newer version might help.  Thanks!

Thanks..I have copied over and posted where you led me.  I just spent a lot of time with Nidhaal from Chat at Adobe and he was unable to help.  Though I can now see my scanner in the drop-down list, it will not open a preview or scan window in PSE10.  He has recommended using PhotoBooth or other scanning interfaces to capture, then import and edit within PSE10.  I am frustrated by the extra, clumsy steps to do something I have been doing for thousands of photos over the past couple of years.  I, at least, want to create a process that is reasonably tried-and-true from other MacOS/PSE users.  I appreciate the direction you've given me.

  • Canon MP780 Color Option, Quality and Media, etc crossed out for SOME apps

    Hi,
I have a Canon MP 780 attached to an old G4 macbook (running 10.4.11) that I'm using as a print server via printer sharing. I'm sending print jobs from a MBPro 2.4 GHz Core Duo running Snow Leopard (10.6.2)
Before I updated to Snow Leopard, all the MP 780 printer functions worked perfectly. Now the Color Options, Quality and Media, Duplex Printing, Special Effects, Borderless Printing and Duplex Printing are crossed out for some application, but not for others. For example, I can print in Duplex from Microsoft Word and Pages, but not from Preview or Safari.
If I do the print job directly from the old MB that's acting as the print server, all the options are available, so this seems to be related to either Snow Leopard or printer sharing.
I have downloaded and installed all the latest drives/software I could find in the CanonUSA website.
Any thoughts on how to get these print services up and running for all my applications?
    Thanks!
    Pete

    Hello Pete,
What you are seeing is a result of using a 32bit driver when using a 64bit application. Preview and Safari are 64bit, while MS Word and Pages are 32bit.
The solution is to use a driver that is written for 64bit (or more so the plugins used with the driver, such as Quality & Media, are 64bit). However, checking the Canon web site, there does not appear to be a 64bit driver available for your model.
So, you could look at forcing the 64bit apps, like Preview and Safari, to open in 32bit mode. With the application closed, find its icon in Finder > Application. Select it and perform a Get Info (File > Get Info or Command I). The Info window that appears will have a button that shows 'Open in 32-bit mode'. Tick this checkbox, close the Info window and then open the application. Now you should find that the Canon plugins such as Quality & Media should be available without the line through them.

  • Which telephoto lens for the 70D

I have a Canon 70D and am interested in a telephoto lens for it. I own an EF18-135 IS, an EF 55-250 IS USM and recently purchased a new EF 70-200 F4 L USM (non IS, that was a mistake). I am thinking about getting the new EF 100-400 L IS II USM but I'm not sure if, for the money, it may be smarter to get the EF 70-200 F2.8 L IS USM and put a 2X extender on it thinking that way I can take the extender off and have a top of the line 70-200. I realize it would be F5.6 at 400mm but so would the new 100-400 and it will never be an F2.8. Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated, just remember I'm a newbie. Thanks

I wouldn't recommend anyone buy the old 100-400 at anything close to the regular list price until we know a lot more about the new version AFTER it's been in use by the general population. That said I'll add that it took me a long time to adjust to using a push / pull zoom but once I did I can easily say that helps me get better results. By using it vs a twist to zoom lens my hand is at the front of the lens right where the hood mounts giving me a more stable hold (support) than if that hand was near the back of it. The new lens will be even heavier so you'll need to find a way to hold it, twist it & control it's weight.
Because I shoot fast paced action at slower shutter speeds lens IQ isn't as important as my panning skills so I really find it hard to believe I'd see a noticeable improvement to what I shoot but many others probably will see a difference. I bought my 100-400 in late 06 or early 07 & it still delivers nice sharp images & is one of the 2 lenses I shoot a lot.

  • Is there a lens profile for Canon EF100-400mm/4.5-5.6L IS II USM for Lightroom 5 ?

I have Lightroom 5.7 and Camera RAW 8.8 (Via DNG converter 8.8) in Mac OS X 10.10.2.
According to Adobe documentation there lens profile for EF100-400mm/4.5-5.6L IS II USM should be provided by Camera Raw8.8.
However, I cannot not find lens profile correction for this lens from Lightroom 5.7. Does anyone know howto enable lens profile for this lens ?

    Thanks, this workaround works:
I copied appropriate lens profile from (the .lcp file)
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/LensProfiles/1.0

Sharon in the woods of Idaho

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If your profile info is up to date, you probably have a 2006 or 2007 MacBook with a CoreDuo or Core2Duo.
It probably came with 512MB or 1GB RAM memory and a 60, 80, or 120GB hard drive.
    You're still running OS X Tiger, 10.4.
Your DVD drive may be dirty or wearing out.
For specifics about your computer, click on the  Apple Logo in the menu bar, then About This Mac, and More Info... to find details.)
You may be running short of hard disk space. You should have at least 10% free, or 10 to 15GB free for best performance. Less than that, and your hard disk is spending lots of time searching for places to store data.
Complex web pages and sites like Facebook and Twitter, and pages using Adobe Flash, and high-bandwidth applications like video streaming from NetFlix can all cause your computer to run slowly, and the fan to run at high speed, because the processor is working hard. Conversely, email is not terribly resource-intensive, and probably still works pretty well.
Several things can each provide a small performance increase (listed in no particular order):
Adding more RAM memory. Upgrade to 2Gb to give your programs a bit of 'breathing room', especially if you are running more than one program at a time.
Erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the current operating system and programs from scratch. This erases all your existing programs and data. Unless you have backups and program discs, you lose everything currently stored on it.
Installing a higher capacity, faster hard disk, say 250GB or 320GB will give your programs and data more space, and perhaps faster access if you replace the factory 5400rpm drive with a 7200 rpm drive. If your current hard disk is nearly full (less than 10% free space), the drive has to 'thrash' to free space to store information.
Upgrading the operating system to OS X 10.5 Leopard or OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Both are discontinued OS X versions, still available to order directly from Apple, but not likely found on a store shelf any longer. An upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion might not be possible for your MacBook (details here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/), and Lion would likely cause a further slowdown, because honestly, Lion is optimized for newer, faster dual-core or quad-core computers with fast video chipsets and 4GB or more of RAM.
A faster internet connection, for example: I switched internet providers to get a 3.0Mb DSL connection (up from a 512Mb connection) for an extra $10 per month, and saw downloads and internet browsing speeds increase dramatically.  With the slower connection, it was not possible to watch video.
Will all of these upgrades together get you close to the performance of the latest MacBook Air or MacBook Pros? NO!
Ultimately, you have a 4- or 5-year-old computer, and spending up to several hundred dollars for upgrades might not be a worthwhile investment for you, versus applying that much money toward the cost of a new(er) Mac, and perhaps passing your MacBook on to a friend, child, or grandchild who needs mainly email capability.
If a brand new Apple is not in the budget, consider a refurbished Mac from the Apple Store online. These are reliable computers from 'last year's models' and have the same 1-year Applecare warranty as a brand new model, and often sell at a discount of 10 to 30 percent of the price when the model was introduced.
I'm using a mid-2007 MacBook, purchased as a refurb from Apple in late 2007. It came with 1GB RAM, a 120GB 5400 rpm hard drive, and OS X 10.4 Tiger. Over the years, I've upgraded it twice. Firs to 2GB, then to 4GB RAM, to a 320GB drive, then to a 500GB 7200 rpm hard drive, and to OS X 10.5 Leopard, and then to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Rather than one more round of upgrades to OS X 10.7 Lion, I'm saving for a newer MacBook Pro or MacBook Air at some time in the future.
