Is the charger for the MacBook and MacBook pro interchangeable?

That is, can I use my MB charger on my MBP and my MBP charger on my MB without anything getting damaged?

I have personally used my wife's MB adapter with my MBP several times without issue. The MB's output rating (65W) is less than the MBP's (85W) so it doesn't have the capacity to handle the full load potential of the MBP. Notice I said full load potential. The MBP does not draw 85W of power all the time. Only if you are stressing the machine...say charging and rendering video. If all you are doing is surfing or word processing you'll be fine.
If you do a search here you'll see this question has been asked and answered dozens of times. You will see the usual warning about overheating and the world coming to an end. You won't see any posts about anyone's machine being damaged. Many people use the MB power adapter with their MBPs while flying since the airlines cap the max power draw at 65W. I haven't heard of any airplanes catching on fire and crashing due to MB adapters overheating.
My suggestion would be to use the MBP adapter whenever possible. If you accidentally use the MB adapter black helicopters will not appear and take you far far away.
