I just purchased I IPOD Classic 160 gig 7th generation and when I look at my menu, I have no settings listed. I want to set it to shuffle mode within a genre. Do I need to have this connected to the itunes software for this to show up?

I recently upgraded my Itunes softeware, now itunes will not recognize my IPod Classic. If I delete the current IPod software and reinstall it, would this solve the problem, and if so, I'll need step by step instruction.

iPod Classic's main advantage is its 36 hour battery life. Having minimal wireless contact is what makes this possible, so if you're fine with syncing you iPod classic to your laptop/Mac whenever you want tunes then by all means purchase the iPod Classic, if not then the 32 GB or 64GB iPod touch I your best bet.

Is the new iPod classic's scroll wheel less sensitive?
I have an iPod video that had a silicone skin on it. When I put the it on the new iPod classic I recently bought, it can't sense my scrolling. Same issue when I put it in my armband that has a plastic cover. Curious to know how many other people have or have had this issue. Wondering if there's any way to change the sensitivity on the iPod.
I think the topic starter means iPod 3G not the second generation iPhone 3G.
But sorry, I don't know. I never used the new USB-cable for the iPod 3G, I always used Firewire. -
When I sync my iPod Classic, the changes I made (Ratings, Last Listened) do not show up on my computer.
Try another Sync. On occasions, I've know a first Sync to behave like this.

Could someone please tell me what the current version of the iPod firmware is? This way, I'll know whether I need to go to a Mac or PC computer to update the firmware of my 5th gen iPod. Thank you very much.This question is now answered. I wonder if there's a webpage that will post the most current version number when the firmware changes. I guess I could keep asking every now and then. Or one of the Apple iTunes users can update all of us when iTunes lets him know that version has changed.

are the newer ipod classics (80GB and above) compatible with docks for the older ipod classics (20GB)?)
I have an iPod Touch 2 with iOS 4.2.1. This is the highest version that works on this device. I checked it once and it had to do with iOS 4.3 and above only supporting the higher RAM CPUs on newer devices.
Apple does make it harder than it needs to be. There still remain a number of apps available on iTunes that will work but they are hard to find because you must manually look at each app specs to see if the app supports an iOS below 4.3
App backups are your friend since iTunes has no way to keep older version of apps. -
