Is the current top line Mac Mini with an SSD and 16GB RAM up to PS CS6 and LR5?

I currently have a 2007 MacPro 2007 2.66GH Xeon dual core ( 4 cores ) with 9GB RAM.
I had been thinking of the new MacPro but it will probably be hellishly expensive.  I was thinking of getting a top of the line Mac Mini with 16GB RAM and an SSD and using USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt to run most of my programs and data storage externally.  I use LR5 and PS CS6.
I was just wondering if the latest Mac Mini was up to the taks with 2-4 GB files and multiple layers?  How well do this little guys hold up?  I know that the power supply is now internal.  Do they run cool enough.... even with an SSD?
Any Mini users out there care to chime in?

Well, the big drawback on the Minis is Intel integrated Graphics.
iMacs & Minis run far too hot  in my Opinion, Apple likely tested them in a 68° F. air conditioned room.
I myself would be looking into an older iMac, or Widows PC!

  • Upgrade 2009 base line Mac Mini with aftermarket RAM and SSD!

    Hello people,
I'm looking to buy a 2009 Mac Mini (base line, 120GB hdd and 1GB of RAM) and was looking to upgrade it with aftermarket RAM (http://corsair.com/products/mac/default.aspx ) to 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair and with an Intel X25-M SSD, most probably an 80GB drive.
And now comes my question: Based on your experience do you know a better match of aftermarket memmory and SSDs with the Mac Mini?!
Also i've read that using an Intel SSD X-25M to hook up an Windows XP machine (either bootcamp or VM) is impossible since Windows XP doesn't recognize the SSD. Is this correct? (I need XP in VMware to access an old app that's windows based only, and NO wine sadly doesn't work).
    Thank you,

  • Macbook pro hard drive transfer to new i7 Mac Mini with new SSD

I've seen some of the threads on drive transfer but wanted to get more input.  I currently have late 2008 Macbook Pro with 750gb hard drive running Lion latest version.  I bought a new Mac Mini i7 with dual 500 gb drives.  I also have new SSD 512gb.  I want to use SSD as boot drive for Mac Mini and install 750gb drive as 2nd drive.  I know how to remove and install the drives.  What is best sequence, software and procedure to execute the exchange?  Any help would be greatly appreciated in advance.

    Hello,
Not clear on your circumstances, but...
Best way to get an exact bootable copy of your old drive to the new one is with Carbon Copy Cloner...

  • Why can't I install MacOSX Lion on a Mac Mini with 10.6.8, 2GB RAM, and CPU upgraded to Core2 Duo?

I have an older Intel Mac Mini running fully updated Snow Leopard with an upgraded CPU (Core2 Duo), RAM (2GB), and hard drive.
Supposedly, this should be compatible with Lion, but the App Store refuses to download it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

It's not the graphics card it is the fact that it is an "upgraded"
system.  Lion, as with any OSX install, is based on the
original computer ID.  If the ID indicated that it was not
a model that was shipped with a CPU that meets the minimum
    requirements it will not install.
The reason I say it is not the graphics card, is that my
Macbook has that card and Lion installed without issue.  It
was, however, equipped with a Core2Duo processor.

  • Migrate iTunes library to Mac mini with both SSD and HHD

I have been using a Mac Mini for my media center for a while and just got a new one with the two drive option. It has a 256GB SSD (where the OS is stored) and a 750GB HHD. My iTunes library is about 400GB. When I try to use migration assistant to transfer the media, it won't let me because the default location for the iTunes library is on the SSD, which isn't big enough. I have tried manually moving the media folder to the new computer and then telling iTunes where the library is, but iTunes shows no music. Please help!

Copy the enttire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the HD on the new computer.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library and select the iTunes folder on the HD.

  • Will leopard work with the current 2.16ghz mac book with 2gb ram?

hey just a quick question new to the whole mac thing and was just wanting to know will i be able to upgrade to leopard on my white mac book 2.16ghz with 2gb of ram and 120 gb harddrive?
    will it run smoothly?
    thanks simon

The terms of use actually says:
"Speculations or rumors about unannounced products."
I would take that to mean questions and speculation about products which have been announced would be okay. Stuff like "Do you think Leopard will be able to do this or that" would seem to be okay.
I think Apple's intent is to keep speculation and/or rumors about products which may not even exist to a minimum.
Granted, no one, apart from developers under a NDA, have experience with Leopard... and even they don't know what the "secret" features are... but I think we're okay chatting about that stuff. They have a major OS overhaul coming in just a few months. I can't imagine they wouldn't expect people to chat about it... beyond what they have posted.

  • Mac Mini with OSX server still OK?

    HI All,
I was going to purchase the mac mini that was geared up to work best with OSX server however that option is now no longer available and the mac mini's have downgraded slightly in terms of quadcore processors and 2tb harddrives.
We run a small design studio, file sharing is becoming a large hinderance on workflow and I thought OSX server sounded like a good solution for someone with little knowledge of the area. We have four imacs, and three macbooks. Our team is growing fairly quick and that number should double next year.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,

Just get the latest mac mini, add some external storage with a Thunderbolt 2 connection and that setup will work great for filesharing.
You will get gigabit network speeds and since it's Thunderbolt 2 the mac mini will have no problem to serve those files across the network.
Make sure you get external storage with a decent RAID setup like a Promise Pegasus for instance, and invest in a good back-up solution.
Then clone your mac mini OSX Server setup daily towards the RAID and you're good to go!
Get a Mac Mini with an SSD or Fusion Drive and 16GB of RAM. That'll keep you going for the next couple of years easy!
    Goodluck!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in safe mode.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    for k in /Sy*/L*/Ex*/{,.?}*.kext; do test -f "$k/Contents/Info.plist" && /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Print :CFBundleIdentifier" "$_" | egrep -qv "apple|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|CalDigit|HighPoint|hp-fax|JMicron|print|SoftRAID|stex" && echo $k; done | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    Repeat with this line:
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 4
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, Steps 1-4 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Hi I have a mac mini with my TV as a display. MY display includes the taskbar but no menu bar, how do I see menu bar???

    HI
I have a mac mini with my TV as a display. My display includes the taskbar but no menu bar, how do I see menu bar???

Make sure you are using a 1080p capable TV.   Some TVs have pixel level video ratio adjustment.  Sometimes that can force the menubar to be visible if it is the only display connected to the machine. Sometimes you have to go to your hard drive's Applications -> System Preferences -> Displays and drag the white bar on top of the display's representation to the other display.  You can only have one primary display with menubar.
Lastly, for non-1080p capable displays, DisplayConfigX or SwitchResX offer pixel level adjustments through software.

The version of Pages is the most useful extra information, it hardly matters what Mac you are using.

The line could possibly be an underline or a paragraph border or a line which is a separate object underneath the rest of the text.
Probably it is a paragraph border.

  • How do I set up my Time Machine and Mac Mini with Lion Server so i have one wifi loop in the house?

    HELP!
So I have had a Time Machine wifi loop at the house for approx. 6 years. I run two Macbooks, 2 iPhones, 2 iTouch and a Samsung Smart Blueray on the loop.
I just bought a Mac Mini with Lion Server. When setting it up I'm not sure what or how I managed to do, but I now have 2 wifi loops, one doesn't lock and niether will support the Samsung BlueRay. Also, each time I want to go online with one of the other Mac devices i have to relog into the wifi loop.
Can someone please walk me through the fix. The mac Mini is plugged straight into the Time Machine to recevie its internet connection.
    Thanks!

You often see this limit of 10 clients in wireless hotspots but I have yet to see it in an adsl modem.. most strange way to pay for a service that is really irrelevant how many clients you use.
Have a go .. I recently setup a TC to help a guy run his Roku.. and this setup worked well.. I have no idea if it can work in your case.
Lets say the IP you get is 192.168.2.1-10 .. doesn't matter what it really is. And the adsl modem is 192.168.2.254
(Assuming they are private addresses.. if they are public IP you can just use the DHCP and NAT. )
But go to the airport utility.. I think you need to run v5 at least to change DNS.. but you can do the same thing in v6 using static but no dns changes.
Now you set the IP of the TC manually.. This address might need to be in the dhcp range of the modem to work. You can set the DNS to same IP as the router address.. ie home address of the modem. Or you can use another DNS.. whatever you like.
Then set DHCP for clients that will join.. this can then expand the scope of addresses..
It worked without a NAT error.. although I am not sure exactly how.. on paper it should not be able to work but did.. have a go.. otherwise there is perhaps another way.. but it is complicated.
Give us an example from a computer plugged into the modem of what IP .. subnet mask .. Gateway and DNS you get. Then I can fine tune the values for it.
