Is the disk drive broken?

I'm fixing up a family friend's 1st gen Macbook and am experiencing a problem with the disk drive. When I was putting in a CD it wouldn't go in, and it feels as if there is a disc already in there. In fact, I'm almost positive there is because when I received it her teenage son asked "By the way... is there a...uh... cd in there by any chance?"
I've tried everything to eject it. I've tried commanding it in the terminal, using the eject button, pulling it out with tweezers, etc, but nothing works. When I try to eject it the computer doesn't even attempt to, it just sits there silently and nothing moves. I'm pretty sure it's dead, but just wanted to know others opinions. It doesn't register that there is a disc in there either.
And if it is dead, would it be cheaper to buy an external CD drive or a replacement to install myself? She's not willing to pay to have Apple fix it, considering the reason I have it is to replace a LCD screen that she cracked and left for a year and a half. I'm a beginner considering I'm only sixteen myself, so if it's an easy repair I would be willing to do it if need be.
Thanks in advance.

For removal or replacement you can see how to do it with an iFixIt manual. Go to the link nd pick your model then look up optical drive.

  • Mac crash deleted various apps and broke the disk drive. How do I get my apps back?

My Mac 10.8.3 crashed a few months ago. It deleted various apps like garage band and iPhoto etc. During that time my mac also fell breaking the disk drive. I fixed the crash, but I have no clue how to reinstall these applications, especially with the disk drive being broken. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks!

you need to purchase an external hdd and insert the grey disk 2 whick origionally came with the mac new.  this disk contains the applications and apple hardware test.

    John,
I'd pay good money to bet it wouldn't last 5 years... I don't rate the in built power supply and as for "server grade hard disk" - Hmmmm..... The failure rate of all HD's on the market after 3 year is 60%.

  • How does it cost to get the disk drive fixed on a macbook pro?

How much does it cost to get the disk drive on a macbook pro fixed?

It depends on who fixes it. Assuming that the drive needs to be replaced, you could have Apple do it (most expensive), a local computer repair shop (less expensive) or do-it-yourself (least expensive).
There's really no 'fixing' a hard drive - it either works or it doesn't. What leads you to believe that your drive needed repair (or replacement)?

It's not Logic that can't find them, it's your Komplete apps, though if you did exaclty as you say I can see no reason why they can't.
Do you know where the apps installed them in the first place? I chose a non-standard locarion for mine, but I'm sure it installs sounds to your documents folder/native instruments/name of app.
Go into the prefs of each app and choose the library location button on the library tab and point it to the relevant folder in documents/native instruments and see if that works

I was loading some CDs into my iTunes library when the disk drive refused to "suck in" the next CD.  Does anyone have a suggest on how I might proceed?

Yes, that is a Catch 22.  If you have another Mac you can connect your Mac to it in the Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire, and use Disk Utility on the second Mac to try to run the Hardware Test from there.  Not sure if it's possible to a connected Mac though.
You can try this several times in the Terminal app and then see if a disk can be fully inserted:
Enter the following command followed by the Enter or Return key:
    drutil eject
Do it several times and then try another disk.  (A long shot).

  • I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?

I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?
I have a 2012 mac book pro can I use that to connect with firewire and load osx that way? and how woudl I do that?
    Thanks so much!

To what password are you referring? Do you mean your user account's admin password? Or do you mean the master password for File Vault or do you mean a Firmware Password?
    For an admin password:
    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
       1. Type fsck -fy
       2. Type mount -uw /
       3. Type passwd <username>
I have never tried this method myself.

I am also having a similar issue. I used Adobe Lightroom and my whole display goes black. Even my laptop screen and the lights on the keyboard go black. I can still hear the fan running, so I assume it is just the display. This is my first Mac and I have had nothing but issues. I think I am going back to Windows after this.

  • When i put a disk in the disk drive the right keys slightly dim, normal?

i noticed that the keys such as l, k, , o , p ,; and some others go dim when i insert a disk into the disk drive, could this be bad, like something rubbing against the light wiring and will eventually fail?

  • Installing Programs Without The Disk Drive Icon Loading On Desktop

    Hey,
I am super anal and don't like any icons on my desktop and I am wondering how, when installing programs, you can install them without the disk drive icon being left on the desktop?
    Thanks.

Oh, right, sorry, one thing I didn't mention. I DO like to have CDs and DVDs and such show up on the desktop when I (seldomly) have them in my computer.
So, is there any other way? If I uncheck the CDs and DVDs line then this solves the disk drive icon but also gets rid of my CD icons.

  • IMac disk drive broken?

Hi guys, this is my first post on here so my apologies if I have done anything wrong. Anyways I've been having problems with my mid 2010 iMac, the disk drive isn't reading any disks. It was recently making a grinding noise when disks were inserted and would then spit them back out. I since upgraded to osx mavericks and the disk drive started working again for a few days. Today the problems resumed, I inserted a disk and it won't even read it now, the disk drive is making sort of a beeping noise (sounds like the laser is beeping?) and I can't eject it either. There is no disk being shown on the home screen and when I press the eject button nothing happens. The disk drive is trying to eject the disk by its self after it tries to read the disk but fails to do so. I was wondering if anyone could help me with how to remove the disk from the iMac and also if anyone else has had this problem? Also if there is a way to fix these problems with the disk drive? thanks in advance guys!

Actually, pretty much any iMac later than the second generation iMac G5 ALS (the "Ambient Light Sensor" model) are quite challenging to take apart & put back together without damaging something. Taking apart any of them after the ALS involves removing delicate items held in place by adhesives, removing hard to reach connectors, & so on. Not impossible but definitely not something the average user should try.
For that reason, I suggest an even more obvious option: instead of paying to have the internal replaced, just buy an external optical drive instead. For instance, Other World Computing offers a lot of them. Although I don't know if it sells outside the U.S. it should give the OP some idea of what's available.
