Is the earphone jack REALLY standard?

I have a Curve 8900 and I love everything about it except the earphone jack. When I first got it a few months ago, I didn't notice the problem because it works fine with the standard Blackberry earphone (3-ring). Then I tried plugging another standard 3.5" earphone (2-ring) and it wouldn't fit. I thought it was just a Blackberry quirk, but then I tried it with my sister's Curve 8900 and the 2-ring earphone fit just fine with hers.
So I went to the mobile provider where I got the Blackberry from (StarHub in Singapore). The customer support person tried plugging a third-party earphone to a 8900 unit she had on stock and it wouldn't fit. She thought it was strange, but she didn't have another phone on stock so she asked me to wait. When I finally got a replacement unit, the earphone jack worked fine for exactly 1 day. Now I've tried three non-Blackberry earphones and none would fit (the standard Blackberry earphone still works). The phone has been in a rubber case and it wasn't dropped, bumped or anything.
I went back again to StarHub. The customer service person tried my non-Blackberry earphone to a different 8900 phone on stock and it wouldn't fit. She concluded that the 8900 could only work with the standard Blackberry earphone that comes in the box and that she couldn't help me any further.
So I've come across 4 out 5 Curve 8900 units that don't work with a non-Blackberry earphone. Is the earphone jack really a standard 3.5"?

  • Why does the earphone jack on the HPdv7 NOT work when on the notebook stand and using replicator?

My Pavilion dv9815nr let me plug my earphones into the pc while it was on the desk extender or stand, and the sound of the speakers would be cut out -- which was especially a good idea late in the evening and helped keep peace in the family.  I liked this VISTA machine very much and was quite happy with it for not quite 3 years.  Unfortunately, the Optical drive gave out, or at least the BUS died and the techies recommended the purchase of a new machine since a repair was apparently expensive.  In order to stay closely to the concept of a full keyboard laptop using a notebook stand with wireless keyboard and mouse, I bought end March a Paviliion dv7 as a replacement machine.  Other than a series of minor mishaps, most of the problems were encountered with the peripherals and I am on a second wireless keyboard, mouse and replicator.  Also a number of odd occurrences related to audio were fixed by obtaining the proper drivers. but now I have encountered something that appears to be simply sloppy design.  When this laptop is in use on the notebook stand and linked to the replicator, the earphone jack on the left side of the PC is dead.  The jack works fine and cuts out the speakers when the USB lead for the replicator is removed.  There is a very impractical solution to the problem and that consists of plugging the earphone mini-plug into the jack located on the replicator.  Since the replicator has a niche location on the back of the notebook stand, this is not a very practical solution.  Any good ideas to get around this?

I went through the installation where the bar shows the percentages downloaded and installed. Once it shows 100% it asks me to click Finish. I do. Then I go to yahoo to check and it continues to show that the plugin is missing and that I need to download Adobe Flash which I thought that I just did. Am I missing something in terms of installing??

  • What connector type is used to plug a guitar into the iPad?  Does it connect to the earphone jack?

What connector type is used to plug a guitar into an iPad?  Does it connect to the earphone jack?

Actually you can get something like this from your local mac store. http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irig/ It plugs right into the earphone jack and works fine (I own this model and it works well on the go). For my actual mac, I use a Monster iStudioLink, which I have heard will work with the iPad 2 (but with some bugs - see the comments on the Monster website) http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=2440

  • Is the earphone jack on the iPhone supposed to be slightly loose?

Is the earphone jack on the iPhone supposed to be slightly loose?

Probably not, but "loose" is probably subjective. Nitty gritty - if it works, it works, and you have no problem.

  • Can i just have apple replace the earphone jack on my ipod classic 160gb; nothing else?

I really don't want to spend $150 on replacing a 10-20 dollar part. I just want them to replace the part, nothing else.

Apple doesn't actually repair iPod, but does an out of warranty exchange of it for a refurbished model of the same generation and capacity.
So if you want just the headphone jack fixed, you'll need to find a third party iPod repair service. Google "iPod headphone jack repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.

  • How do i find out if my one year warrenty will cover replacing the earphone jack?

Nomatter what I do only one earphone works with all headphones, when i put the headphones in another device both works. My wanenty does not expire until next febuary, but i keep trying to look and see if it is covered but i cannot find it in the text. I don't have any money so I have to deal with it if apple does not cover, but i really want to listen to my music peacefully again. Please help me.

Unless the problem was caused by abuse or other accidental damage, Apple will exchange your in-warranty iPod with a refurbished one at no cost. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store for the exchange.

    speed2fly,
There is an adapter available through the Apple Store online.

It is in the section for iPhone Cables and Docks.

  • Is the mike output in the earphone jack also

this is a notebook g62223cl and we want to use a single plug for skype hookup

    Ravi,
In the FI form, I think the driver program assigned will be the RFF* series. If so, during execution, on your selection screen, plz see the number of printouts option. In that specify that as 1.
    Hope this helps.

  • Red Light in Earphone Jack

I was using my Macbook Pro with my Headphones plugged in. When I unplugged them I got a red light that appeared to be in the Earphone Jack. When I tried turning the volume up without the headphones plugged in it would give me a circle with a dash through it. But when I tried with the headphones plugged in that didn't happen. Once I restarted my Macbook it went away but I would like to know what this is/how it happened for future reference.
    Message was edited by: Lux1200

The socket is capable of outputting analogue audio or a digital stream (seen as a red light) and this is controlled by a small switch inside the socket and should only go to digital if you use a Toslink plug.

  • 1st Gen shuffle...can't hear anything...could the ear jack go bad??

On my husbands shuffle you can't hear anything..can the ear jack go bad? you can charge it, see the playlist on computer etc, but can't hear a thing.
    Any help appreciated.

Have you tested the earphones on some other device/ Have you tried other earphones on the shuffle?
Yes, the earphone jack CAN go bad...

  • No sound on my mac book and a red light in the headphone jack

    as in the title,
The sound controls dont work and I have a constant red light out of the earphone jack, with the earphones in all is okay but without ....silence

The red light is the digital in light, that is how it reads the headphone jack. The reason the sound doesn't work is because a switch to turn the speakers back on is stuck (note that if you boot the computer, you will hear the startup tone).
There are several ways to fix this...
Some have found that putting the headphone plug in and out several times (maybe twisting it a little) will work.
Others have used a toothpick to adjust the switch (I don't advise this because the toothpick may break).
Instead of a toothpick, many have used a paperclip (probably best to use an insulated one). I couldn't get this to work, but I would suggest straightening, folding in half, then twisting the paperclip and moving it around in the port.
You can also use a sewing pen/needle.
I have seen all of these methods online, but they didn't work for me. I took a que from this instrucable and cleaned my jack with a dry q-tip. I then cut off most of the end and turned it around inside the port. This worked, but after I put the headphones back in the same problem came up, I just did the same procedure again and it worked again (even after I plugged the headphones back in and took them out).
PS: I woud suggest putting some q-tips and possibly some scissors in your MacBook bag in case the problem arises on the move.

  • Anyone having issues with iphone 5 earphone jack? .

Got my iphone early this week.  When I plugged in my earphone and only 1 earphone is audible.  Apple stored tested it and found it to be defective and ordered a replacement.  I just got a new replacement.  Came home, unpacked the box and tested my iphone 5.  all looks good but when I plugged in my earphone into the earphone jack, I faced the same issue.  Only the right earphone is working.  the iphone 5 earphone works awesome on my ipad and my nexus.  anyone having this same recurring issue?  or it's just a batch manufacturing defect?

The problem is still going on. I bought the iphone 5 in December 2012. Right earphone doesn't work. Not sure i'm getting right channel through the speaker either. There is not an Apple store here. Will check with Verizon store tomorrow.    No replies?

  • In the help! The grip jack of my iMac does not work any more for this morning! How needs to make to repair it ? Please

This morning, I wanted to listen to some music on my iMac via my earphones but the computer, did not get any more my earphones. Indeed, when I puts the sound, this one takes out outer loudspeakers and not my earphones. They are not posted in the preferences sound. I tried earphones on my mp3, they worked.
You can help me to repair my grip jack. If they pleases you
Sorry if you do not understand very well, I am French.
    Thank you!

It sounds like the headphone jack on your iMac is having problems. One solution you might try is to insert and remove the earphones' jack several times. Sometimes this clears it up.
If that doesn't work, you will probably need to have the iMac repaired. Is it under warranty or AppleCare? If so it should be covered at no charge. Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the iMac in to an Apple retail store or service provider. If you are outside of warranty they can give you an estimate for the cost.
    Best of luck.
