I invest a lot of free time in preparation for "Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Associate" and "SQL Certified Expert".

I wish to use the gained know how for at least 35 years!You are in the wrong industry. In the IT field, 35 years is an eternity. Going back 35 years from today would be 1977. The PC doesn't exist. It's a mainframe world.
You should become a geologist. Rocks don't change much. Geologists think in terms of 100,000 years and up.
I attended an Open Source conference and those presenters said that NoSQL is the future. I went to a Honda dealership a few weeks ago. They said Toyotas are passe and Hondas are the future...
If anyone at an OpenSource conference said anything but that... it would be because they brought the wrong notes for their speech.
They said nobody will use proprietary RDBMS in about 10 years.Very Very Very unlikely. Companies that use Oracle tend to have enterprise-class databases. They have a huge investment in technology and personnel and time in their current system. You don't just decide one day to throw all of that away and change to something completely different. I can't really say what reasons your lecturers gave to suggest that they would because I wasn't there. However, when you have millions of dollars invested in a system, there has to be a compelling reason to change. Heck -- there are still businesses using systems developed in COBOL of all things because of legacy investment in it.
That's really bad news. Will my know how be useless in 10 years?Maybe. If the Mayans put out an updated calendar that says the world will end in 2023.

You mustn't believe everything you hear from an Oracle sales person. The sales reps have a vested interest in making you believe that OBI SE, which includes Discoverer, will not be here because they earn a lot more commission if they can get you to use EE.
They are right though in that Oracle is developing a tool that will migrate the Discoverer metadata into the Siebel metadata but this is only aimed at making you upgrade to Siebel - which is about 4 to 5 times the cost of Discoverer by the way. Siebel won't be replacing Discoverer, it will be an alternative. A nice, sexy looking, powerful alternative, yet an alternative nevertheless.
Discoverer will still be here and you will then have a choice as to whether you stay with standard edition or migrate to enterprise edition. Now of course if you have plenty of money there is nothing stopping you from upgrading, but for most people that option is out of the question right now. Oracle would need to reduce the price for EE if it is to tempt most of the Discoverer organizations into EE. Heck, there are hundred of companies still using 3.1 never mind 10g Release 2. And how many folks who have 10.1.2 have upgraded to 10.1.2.2, even though its been out a few months now and fixes all those GUI issues that they have?
From what I know, Oracle never makes claims for a product more than 2 releases out and Discoverer certainly has 2 releases in the pipework. There's a release 10.1.2.3 due out in a couple of months and a major 11g release next year. After that it would have a support life of a minimum of 5 years, even if they stopped it after 11g, during which time anything can happen. As you know, 5 years in IT is an absolute age.
Your posting certainly makes for interesting reading though and I'm sure there will be plenty of commets. If you hear any other interesting snippets I'd love to hear.

There is no such thing that the future will nto be there for the dbas.Its not the profession of dbas but it applies to everyone who is in any field.The value is only for those who are good in what they do. So if you are really good in whatever you do there wont be any issues in oppertunities. Oracle database is a very vast field and you need to keep your self always open to learn new concepts , things, technologies to make sure that you are in demand.

The future of Oracle Designer - summary of discussion-meeting in Holland

Last Tuesday we had a very interesting AMIS Query session with representatives of the CDM and Headstart team as well as a number of Dutch Designer and Headstart users. We discussed the future developments around Oracle's development tools, Designer, Oracle SCM and Forms in particular as well as the Headstart, CDM and RuleFrame offerings from Oracle Consulting. I think this is a simple answer . . . more and more data is collected. The need for DBAs will grow at a similar growth rate. I really watch how well storage market to get a feel of how the need for DBAs changes.

Future of Oracle BPM 10g

Hi Friends, I have been working on Oracle BPM 10g past 6 months, but really not sure whether to continue using this tool as its going to be obsolete soon. Guess most of the client are using Oracle BPM 11g and some even migrating to Oracle 12c. What's the future for Oracle BPM 10g with the respect to BPM market in the future. Are there any projects/clients which are still using Oracle BPM 10g. How easy/difficult is to move from BPM 10g to BPM 11g. I have around 6 years of experience and worked on Savvion Business Manager earlier. Please help with your valuable suggestions. Regards.

Support for Oracle BPM 10g has been extended. Look at Oracle's Lifetime Support Policy document for Fusion Middleware (page 40). Note that support for Oracle BPM 10g has been extended to December 2018.
With that said, if a company was to start an Oracle BPM project today, I'd suggest that they do it using Oracle BPM 11g. Your upgrade path to 12c will be much simpler using 11g and there aren't many of us left who know and can train people getting started on Oracle BPM 10g.

Future of Oracle JHeadstart

All,
A number of you have raised questions on the future of Oracle JHeadstart and we have not been very responsive upto now. Sorry for that.
As you all probably are aware Oracle JHeadstart is an Oracle Consulting Resellable Asset. This means that the direction of JHeadstart is mainly determined by the projects that we, as Oracle Consulting do at our customers with ADF and JHeadstart. That said we have a number of customers that want to make the step to 12c and we intend to deliver a JHeadstart 12c version. Our intention is that we make this release available at the end of this calendar year or early next calendar year (planned not scheduled). We are also working on making it an integral part of our Forms2ADF Migration Factory to support customers in moving from Oracle Forms to Oracle ADF.
How JHeadstart develops beyond the 12c version depends as said before on the projects we will be doing. Of course themes that are of interest to our customers and Oracle Consulting include developer productivity and mobile applications. For now we focus on getting the 12c release out.
If you have any remarks about the future direction and where JHeadstart should evolve to to deliver even more value to your organization, please share these thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Future of Oracle Portal

Anybody knows about the future of Oracle Portal.
Will WebLogic Portal replace it?

WebLogic is not similar product as OAS Portal. WL provides a J2EE framework and requires strong Java developer skills. You create portals similar as you would do in WebCEnter, using IDE. In WL case that is BEA's version of Eclipse, in OWC case that is JDeveloper. BTW, WL runs only on WebLogic Server (currently).
It is expected for WL and OWC to converge in the few next releases.

Of course itis possible to migrate from OAS Portal to Web Center - via via JSF Portlet Bridge.

BEA has another product called AquLogic User Interaction (ex Plumtree portal). That is declarative portal, that is simmilar in a way to OAS Portal. Of course, it does not support PL/SQL, but it can run on different servers. Anyway, that is an advanced declarative portal product. It is going to be rebranded as Oracle's prpoduct, and become part of OWC suite (together with OC Framework, OWC services etc).
4)
OAS Portal will remain DB centric, declarative environment that is running on iAS EE and most probably WebLogic Server. In release 11 it will include some Web2.0 services/features.

I think it's a problem with DVDs. Not sure how to check integrity of DVDs?

Hansal,
md5sum will verify the integrity of the stage area directory but not the integrity of the CDs/DVDs.
To check the contents of the Media Pack, try to view the contents of the DVD itself (use ls command).
If downloading files from https://edelivery.oracle.com/ website is not an option for you then you may need to log a SR and ask Oracle support to send you another Media Pack.

The Future/Direction of PHP at Oracle?

I'm confused.
Oracle's statement of direction, http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/php/htdocs/php_ohs_sod.html , makes no mention of the partnership with Zend.
Zend for Oracle is based on PHP5.
Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (for AIX) ships with PHP4.
Why the difference? (I was expecting the Zend for Oracle offering to be bundled into the 10g Release 2 product, clearly it is not so)

Our systems are very much database centric, a long evolution since the early 90's. Our 'first generation' web based solutions are largely based on modPL/SQL. This has served us well for delivering HTML based solutions.
We have recently developed a visually rich Flash application (display only), which retrieves data from our database using a SOAP interface implemented in PHP (Zend Core of Oracle on top of Oracle Application Server 9.0.4). It was relatively inexpensive to develop, and works well.
This success is leading us to down the path of using PHP for a wider set of solutions. Migrating some of the PL packages that build some rather complex HTML are possible candidates for implementation in PHP (as project work presents the opportunity).
One of the complexities that the OAS and ZCO configuration presents is the installation itself. We are also in the process of upgrading OAS to 10g Release 2, and we're having a couple issues with the ZCO part. Tighter integration would simplify the install, and improve the quality of the product partnership.
The main reason we went with Zend Core of Oracle is that from the research we did on OTN in the PHP technology area, it would appear that was the only option available that would best integrate with OAS 9.0.4.
It has taken us by surprise that Oracle is not actively integrating ZCO into it's product offering, much in the same way Oracle migrated its products to Apache from Spyglass, or brought Orion (OC4J) into the fold...or TopLink...the strategy seems to have shifted.
