Is the hard drive as good as a flash drive?

my creative MP3 player recently broke (wish i never would have bought it) I'm now looking to get an IPod and I was wondering if the 30GB with a hard drive is as good as a flash drive because I mean I'll be using it when i excercise (running) and i dont want it to break or anything...Just because a harddrive uses moving parts I dont want it to fall apart or somrthing stupid a flash drive wouldn't do
Thanks in advanced: Oscar

For your scenario,I would suggest the Flash Drive; theres no moving parts and it will hold enough songs for your exercise routines and less expensive; you'll have less worry if it's lost or damage!
The 30Gb harddrive is best suited for carrying your collection, music, videos and data;
You wouldn't normally watch a Video during running or jogging.
Any device can fail and at anytime.

i recently received a mac book air 11 inch for christmas ... i beliehve it was bought in the states from my father i was unaware of the specs until i opened and read it... and i was wondering if i can still do the upgrade to 8gb ram and bigger flash drive.. is this possible and for how much? its only a week old.

Your 14 days are up, however you could take your case to Apple Inc. regarding same,
    however those are the stipulations.
RAM cannot be upgraded however, period, its permanent on the logic board after mfg.
As for the SSD (solid state drive), upgrading same is a bad premise 9 times out of 10.
No notebooks is a mass storage device, and you need an external HD for data redundancy and backups regardless.
data that is static on your SSD and not used very often has no logical reason to be ON the notebooks, and best saved on a superslim external HD ($60)
SSD are very expensive, even a small one,  HD are cheap as dirt and users are recommended to have one regardless for many good reasons.

  • HT5172 Glad to have USB capability on my new iMac.  Been in Mac world all of 2 days now.  Question - I downloaded photos from a Centron flash drive and am wondering if flash drives have to be ejected the same as on a PC?  Can't find how to do it.  Thanks.

Been in the iMac world now all of 2 days.  I'm glad to have USB capability.  I downloaded photos from a Centron flash drive and now need to remove the flash drive.  Do you eject flash drives on iMacs as we did on PC's?  Can't find an answer in the support area.  Thanks...

Yes. All external drives regardless of how they are connected must be ejected before they can be unplugged.

  • I'm trying to run win 8 on my Macbook Pro (running 10.8.5) is there anyway to run the software on bootcamp without using a flash drive?

I recieved a download of windows 8 OS Premium, and I'm trying to run it using bootcamp. Unfortunately it's trying to tell me that I need to run it off a flash drive. At this time I don't have a flash drive big enough to hold the OS and the required installer software. Any suggestions?

Apple only supports Windows on certain hardware.
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Apple provides their framework for Windows to run on a Mac, a piece of software called a Hybrid MBR that bridges the gap between how Windows reads the drive partition table (MBR) and EFI/GUID partition table that Mac's use.
It doesn't mean Windows can't run on your Mac, a third party solution called rEFIt will also bridge the gap and allow booting of more that just Windows, Linux as well for a triple booting computer.
Your hardware has to meet the other requirements the second and third operating system needs as as being able to install drivers that will work for your hardware, especially the fans or they will run loud and fast by default.
    http://refit.sourceforge.net/
This above is a advanced procedure which requires knowledge how computers and various operating systems, drive formats and so forth work.
I even admit I don't know everything myself, but I experiment on a separate piece of Mac hardware (out of warranty/AppleCare) designed for this purpose so in case something screws up I'm not taking down my only machine and can use the other to get online and find solutions.
There is a very high potential for losing your data if your using advanced/non-Apple methods to install Windows on your only Mac where Apple doesn't support it. Also one shouldn't be doing this on Mac hardware that is under AppleCare or warranty as it might be voided. Proceed at your own risk and education.

  • How to preserve the column headings from my playlist when I transfer the list as WAV files to a flash drive?

I have digitized several old vinyls as WAV files and have them in my MacBook Pro in an iTunes playlist. I have arranged the list under the column headings of "Grouping", "Name", "Time", "Artist", "Album" and "Genre". When I copy the files to a flash drive by drag-and-drop, none of the headings except "Name" show up. How to preserve all of the column headings when copying the file to an external device?  Thanks - RC@gnv.

I have the same issue when trying to sync from iTunes 11 on my MacBook to my iPhone 4 iOS6.1. I blindly did the iOS upgrade to 6.1 (more fool me) and since then have not been able to use my phone as an iPod.
I have tried restoreing it, I ve tried restoring it to a new phone but it hasn't worked for me.
The sync starts and the capacity bar in iTunes shows capacity including and music or films etc that are to be included in the sync and then iTunes stops the sync and nothing has been transfered. As with your experience the music is shown in iTunes under Music, under Devices as greyed out with the syncing icon (dotted circle) to the left of it.
When I try to include photos in the sync, I also get an error msg stating the connection to the iPhone has been lost. I am trying to do the sync vis USB, so I dont why I get this error.
I can of course download any music I've bought from Apple from my iCloud to my phone but I want to be able to put any music I want on to it like I could before on iOS5.

  • A known good working Universal Flash Drive fails on different PC when using the capture image command

    I have a UFD

    Hi,
The information here didn't help much in resolving the issue, as Mr. Arnav Sharma suggested, could you please have a share with the full error messages?
What is the image capture command that you are using?
Do we followed any guides to capture the image? If yes, would you please have a share with that?
Besides, here are some articles for reference:

  • Help!  My iMac doesn't see the hard disk!

My old, reliable iMac (the old sunflower flat panel) suddenly froze up and when I did a hard break and restarted it, the dreaded folder with a question mark appeared.
I tried starting it from an installation disk--which it did with no problems except it still didn't see the hard disk. I tried inserting the Apple Hardware Test disk, which worked. I ran it and it said everything was OK, but when I hit the Restart button it still didn't see my hard drive.
I'm at my wit's end because, being a freelancer, I have a lot of important information on my iMac, which I stupidly haven't backed up for a long time. I have a little hope because the Apple Hardware Test ran and didn't find any problems (the Mass Storage test passed, which I'm assuming is the hard disk?).
PLEASE! Can anyone help me? My main objective is to get my data off of the disk and onto either my PowerBook or my external USB hard drive.
    Thanks for any advice,
    Karin

Are you saying your drive did not show up in Disk Utility? Did you Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

I think we have all been there! If you need help with a better backup strategy, let us know!

You can retrieve data using Target Disk Mode to your PowerBook. That's if the drive shows up.

  • ICore 5 with flash drive vs iCore 7 with hard disk

    Hi,
I've been with PC since the days of DOS in the 80's. I've finally made a switch to Mac after my son has used MacPro for 4 years now and about to upgrade.
I just bought a 27inch iMac with iCore 7 with traditional hard disk. After reading about flash drive/SSD, I am thinking maybe I've made a mistake not going for a flash drive option. I have about a week left to be able to return the unit to Apple. So my question is whould I be enjoying more by going to iCore 5 with a flash drive for about the same price as my current setup? My main use is to do small business bookkeeping, internet use, kepping music and family pictures. I don't play computer games (maybe a chess or solitare once in a while)
    Thank you for your input.

I vastly disagree. An SSD will make every single use there see improvement over the i7. The i7 may be fast but you won't do anything that would really tax the CPU, you'd be much better served by the SSD. It will make your browser load faster, yout pictures load faster, any databased that you bookkeep load faster, and most importantly it will cut your 'sluggish Mac syndrome' situation where after just loading up from sleep/reboot etc, your Mac needs a minute to 'warm up' else things run very slowly.

  • How do I download Mountain Lion to a flash drive after hard drive failure?

My hard drive failed and I have purchased Mountain Lion, but do not have a way to get back to the app store to download to a flash drive to install on my new hard drive.  How can I go about getting a copy?

Install new drive, insert OS X DVD disc in DVD drive and then start the system. Hold down either the C key or the option key. C key will boot the system from the DVD drive, Option key will bring up a boot selection screen and then give it about 30+ second to read the DVD disc and select that.
Once the OS X install disc loads select Utilities from the menu bar nd then Disk Utility. In disk utility select the drive model number and size entry, the top most entry, on the left and the partition tab. In the partition tab select One partition from the partition layout area and then give it the name Macintosh HD, Format Mac OS Extended and then click the Options button and make sure it is set to GUID as the partition table. Once that is done close the Options screen and click the Apply button.
Once that is finished exit disk utility and proceed with the install of OS X.
Once that is all done the system will reboot to OS X on the internal drive. You then insert the Applications DVD and install all of those or the ones you want leaving out the ones you don't want.
Once that is done run Software update under the Apple Logo icon in the menu bar. If you have any problems with installing the iLife app from the Applications DVD you might need the installer update which should be available from running software update first.

  • Can you replicate the video DVD autolaunch and playback on a Flash drive?

I'm creating a motion graphics presentation in Motion and I normally burn these to DVD with DVDSP where it automatically plays when you insert it into a DVD player or computer.
My client wants to distribute the presentation on Flash drives, though, and give those out. My thinking is that a Flash drive is only data and so we would need to distribute the presentation as a QT movie file, which would require the end user run the file.
There's no way to make a computer think a Flash drive is a video DVD, is there?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply.
Yeah, the companies you buy those custom USB Flash drives from will put any file you want on them and I'm familiar with the auto run .ini option in Windows. The problem with that is playing a QuickTime movie file on a PC or Mac doesn't look as good at full screen as a video DVD, in my opinion, and the end user would have to manually tell it to go full screen. Finally, not all computers have the auto run feature enabled because of the virus issue you cited, and the end user would have to right-click on the drive and select "Explore" in Windows, or find the file in the Finder, and then manually run it.
Video DVD is great because it looks great at full screen and it's platform agnostic. If you insert one into any computer with a DVD drive, it will either auto play or it will give the user a dialog asking them if they want to play it.
But from a marketing perspective, the USB Flash drive is better because when you give them out to people (with your company's logo on it), people are more likely going to use it and see your presentation versus a DVD disc.
    Thanks!

  • Why doesn't my flash drive work in the usb port

Does anyone else have the problem where the usb port is not reading my flash drive?

I had an unreadable flash drive, and the instructions here fixed it: How to restore unreadable USB flash drive under Mac OS X « Konstantin Bulenkov's personal blog

  • For some reason, my USB flash drive is being recognized as an external hard drive, is there any way to fix this?

I think I used Disk Utility on this flash drive before and know it won't show that it's a flash drive, my other flash drives still show up as flash drives so is there anyway to fix this? I'm on Mac OS X 10.9.3.

    A workaround.
If you would like to change the drive icon:
    - Under Finder right click on a flash drive and choose " Get Info  "
    - click on the disk icon at the top, from the desktop menu select Edit -> Copy
    - Under Finder right click on the problematic volume and choose " Get Info  "
    - click on the disk icon at the top, from the desktop menu select Edit -> Paste
    Cheers

  • I want to add the Flash driver to my Macbook Air

    Hello,
I am using a Macbook Air with 128 GB flash driver.
In the Apple store, can they install additional flash driver to my computer ?
otherwise, is there any other method to buy or install additional flash driver ?
    Thanks.

Apple will not upgrade computers. You can buy after market solid state drives - see OWC for example. The upgrade is relatively simple and OWC has training videos showing how to do it as well as tool kits with the tools you'll need. While Apple won't install it for you, many 3rd party repair sites will.
