Is the iCloud an external storage option?

Hi,
The storage area has 5.93GB available and I am unable to update the operating system as there is not enough space available. I have emptied the Trash.
I need to look at external storage options and am wondering if purchasing 200 GB in the iCloud and move audio, movies and photos from the MacBook Air to iCloud is a practical option instead of an external hard drive or mini drive. Audio, movies and photos take up 75GB storage.
Thank you.

Yeah - that was basically my point.

  • What are the best affordable external drive options for my iMac ?

    Hello,
I am a fairly recent newcomer to Macintosh as my primary personal computing platform. I have recently installed Adobe CS4 Design Premium Student Edition on a late 2006 20in iMac and have several important questions about external hard drives. First of all, everyone knows that using any personal computer (whether you its a Macintosh, or a PC running Windows and/or Linux) without an acceptable way to backup critical data is no different than driving in your car without your seat belt fastened. I need advice for a good external hard disk solution for backup and several other important computing tasks given the following realities
    1. Contrary to what I to originally thought, I do not have Firewire 800, but instead have access to dual firewire 400 ports in addition to USB 2.0. My concern over connection speed in regards to Adobe's recommendation to use RAID 0 arrays for scratch disks used by Photoshop CS4. Adobe also recommends that scratch disks for photoshop CS4 are assigned on a hard disk that is not your startup disk. Nontheless, Adobe has no objection to use your startup disk assuming it has plently of Free space (and mine does w/ 189.53 GB available)
    2. Do really need RAID 0 to achieve the performance I would need? I had prior Mac based training with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign, in High school. I have not used this software in 4 years and am not only trying to refresh my skills but to learn the software. In other words I am still in the beginner stage With practice and patience, I will certainly learn the software and use it to the best of my creative energies. Given the situation if my work becomes complex enough over time how important is RAID 0 when I make purchase of an external hard disk? I known that the disk utility in Mac OS X allows the user to create a Raid array. This seems like the cheapest way to accomplish the job. However, the purchase of an external Hard Drive must be able to safely backup my system and also provide adequate performance.
    3. Speaking of backup, I am one of those users who is still stubbornly clinging to Mac OS X Tiger. However, updating to a new OS has been required ritual for my previous two PCs. That said given that Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard will be out in mere months, I do not see the wisdom now in upgrading to Leopard. After all as a higher education student, money is tight and see Snow Leopard as far more compelling and future-proof upgrade. Snow Leopard is getting better plumbing and will also include Microsoft Exchange Server support (possibly the biggest selling point). I also have interest in using Boot Camp in 10.6 (or 10.5) for running windows software (that are useful for my academics) and games (particularly Half-Life 2 and other Steam games that can run well within my Mac's fairly limited gaming capabilities. If I decide to use Boot Camp I have to partition my internal hard disk. This further complicates finding a very reasonable, affordable, and reliable external disk solution given everything that I have mentioned. Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I don't think you should worry about the RAID stuff. The only way you could create a RAID is by using external drives, or one those external enclosures with two drives inside. Any speed advantage of such a RAID would be mostly negated by the FireWire 400 connection.
Use your internal drive space for speed critical functions. Use a FireWire 400 external drive for additional storage space, where speed is important but not critical, such as storing your existing media (including your things like your iTunes library files). Use a separate cheaper USB 2.0 external drive for your Time Machine (or whatever method) backup archive, where speed is not that important at all (some people even use a network connection for their Time Machine backup).
You can get a FireWire 800 drive and use an adapter to connect to FireWire 400. The connection won't be any faster on your iMac, but you can use the drive later with a Mac that does have FireWire 800. There are drives that have FireWire 400 and 800, and USB 2.0.
I like the drives sold by OWC
    http://www.macsales.com/
I often buy the drive enclosure empty and find a good deal on the hard drive mechanism that I want. OWC sells most of their drives empty. My current Time Machine drive is actually one of these USB adapters
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
connected to a Western Digital 750GB SATA drive that I got for about $70. Found that deal through dealmac.com. Couldn't think of a cheaper way to add that large amount of backup space, and it works very well. The internal drive in my iMac is only 160GB, so most of my personal data is on an external FireWire 400 drive; both drives are backed up by Time Machine.

  • TS4403 I am interested in using the ICloud as a storage for my pics and music on my laptop, but I wanted to know if it will work before I pay.  Can I do that or do I have to get a different kind of storage

Is Icloud a good solution for back up storage for a Windows Vista Lap top?

No, iCloud is not for the storage of data from your computer. It is for the storage of data from your iDevices.

  • Can I turn off the drive mirroring from my MAC to the iCloud? Meaning I want to just use the iCLoud and a storage device but not have it take up space on my HD.

Basically I have 100megs left on my HD. I need to offload content. I need to move my files (photos) over to the cloud but I don't want it mirrored on my desktop taking up space.

That's correct, I moved the iMac drive to the second bay in the new Quad G5.
I wasn't sure if any combination of events would fix this. I didn't think there were any caches or anything else I needed to clear but just posted here to be sure.
The iMac was 10.4.3 and current with all updates. I didn't really think anything was missing but posted here to be sure. My understanding of Mac OS X is such that I was pretty sure that everything the Quad needed was already on the iMac drive. Not that this is necessarily any more reliable, but I asked at the Apple store and they said there was no problem with me moving the drive to the Quad and setting it as the startup volume.
A few people have told me that it's probably OK, but the official method is to use the migration assistant. So today I installed from the Power Mac OS X discs (10.4.2) to the Hitachi drive which I erased, then ran the migration assistant, then software update, then cloned the Hitachi drive back to the Seagate. I think the performace of the two drives is nearly identical (Seagate ST3300831AS, Hitachi HDS725050KLA360) and wanted the smaller (300 GB) Seagate drive to be my main drive.
I've been using Macs for only about a year and have found the experience interesting. On the plus side the performance is fairly consistant and I don't experience progressive system slowdown over a period of months. And of course there are the system update, viruses, etc. issues which are better. On the negative side basic stuff feels faster on a Windows system. I'll try Photoshop which I have no doubt will be faster on the Quad than the iMac and probably faster than a PC, too. But Safari or Firefox don't feel as fast as IE on a new Windows PC. Just my observation. I invested a lot in this Quad and expected to feel a significant speed boost even if it's only for launching applications and displaying web pages. (I have Comcast's highest speed Internet service.)

  • Went into iCloud Buy More Storage Downgrade Options... got email about my phone number being changed right after???

    Hi,
I've gone into the iCloud > Buy More Storage > Downgrade Options and after entering my password I received an email from Apple saying the following information for my Apple ID "id" was updated today: Phone Number(s). But I didn't change my phone number and the information currently saved for my phone number for my Apple ID is correct.
Why would I get this email? I figure it must be some kind of bug considering the information is correct and it emailed me right after I entered my password in the iCloud section. (I'm not wanting to change my password.)

The thread running through your explanation has to do with connectivity to your server. (iCloud out of the blue asking for password, unable to message your boyfriend, unable to access e-mail). You said that you boyfriend restart his device and then the two of you were able to then imessage. My best advice for you would be to go to settings to reset to reset network settings. Once this has been done you then will need to enter the name and password of your wifi. ONce this is done you then can attempt to check to see that all passwords are enter correctly.
    Good luck.

    Hi Ponnuchamy,
to solve your issue RFC is an ideal one ,basically it consists of sender and receiver profiling destination configuration etc.

  • RMBP 256GB+external storage or 512GB?

    Here's the deal!
So Im set on buying my first macbook pro, and I went for the RMBP base model with 256GB HD.
I know that the macbook pro isnt really a gaming machine, hence the pro name and so on....
Main use would be some gaming, photoediting, video etc. Im planning on installing Win7 via bootcamp!(to keep my options open, gamewise)
All of a sudden Im a bit worried if I'm running out of space, and should have went for the 512GB capacity...(I know this can only be answered by me)
    Questions:
    1)     Considering my setup with bootcamp and mainuse, should I really go for the 512GB of HD model instead? Im also considering that the OS takes up like         30GB with generic programs installed??...
    2)   ...Or,  what's the best external storage option, If I want to take advantage of the Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 ports??? I could settle for 500-1TB of HD
(Not yet a millionaire, something in the range of 400USD max, would be pretty sweet)
ps. I looked at the LAcie 1TB porsche design 2.0 USB storage device? (but that wouldnt really benefit from the ports rite???)
    3) What's the deal with Timecapsule??? Obviously transferspeeds are slower, but is it a must/wisebuy for a Mac Newbie???
    Thnx!

    1. I would have gone for the 512GB as you're stuck with what you order. The machine is not user upgradeable. If it's possible, change your order for 512GB.
    2. You'll need at least one external drive for back-up. I recommend using Time Machine. Most people recommend an external drive that is 2-3x the size of your internal drive for TM back-ups, hence you'd need a 1-2 Terabyte external drive (for all things about Time Machine, click here). Thunderbolt drives are still far too expensive at this time, in my opinion, yet several people here have reported problems with some USB 3.0 external drives. Look for one from a reputable Mac drive company, such as LaCie or OWC. I would actually call both companies and see what they have in the way of USB 3.0 drives and see what they recommend.
    3. Time Capsule is a nifty little back-up system, using Time Machine, that include Airport services. But I wouldn't want wireless back-up - for one reason, as you note, wireless back-ups are slow. There are thousands of happy TC users, but I'd just buy a fast USB 3.0 external. Not a must or wise buy in my opinion.
    Hope this helps somewhat,
    Clinton

  • Core Data: "Allows external storage" for Transformable type?

When I create a Core Data attribute, and set its type to "Transformable", the "Allows external storage" option is unavailable. I only see it available for Binary type.
How can I use "Allows external storage" with Transformable type?

I wanted to post an update and let everyone know what I decided on and how well it works.
I went with the following setup.
    eSATA Express Card
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839200006
    eSATA enclousure
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817173043
    eSATA drive
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218
All of this cost me a total of $159.57 for about 600gigs of high performance storage after being formated! I did some benchmarks and the drive is performing faster than my internal 7200rpm drive. It is not much faster but it is faster.
So I would have to say that if you really want some fast performing drives for just about anything eSATA is probably the way to go.
    About the items,
The eSATA card looked used when i got it. The seal was broken and the item was dirty and had finger prints on it. It was however very easy to install. I just downloaded the newest drivers from rosewill.com plugged it in and it worked.
The hard disk enclosure seems well made and was a breeze to setup and install. It also does usb 2.0 if you need it. It has as a big cooling fan and includes a usb and sata cable as well as a eSATA bracket for your desktop pc.
All in all a great buy. So thank you again for all the info

  • IPhone as external storage?

    Searched, didn't find anything recent.
Is it possible to use the iPhone as external storage for a Mac, specifically a Macbook Air? If so, is it possible via bluetooth?
    Thanks!

Nvm, I was looking for something official. As with most things Apple, there is no "official" app. There are alternatives though it seems for bluetooth.
As far as transfering in general, there appear to be several apps out there that will allow this via wi-fi incuding discover and briefcase.

  • Oracle White Paper- Storage Option for RAC. on Linux

    hi..
This in reference with White Paper.. Stotage Option for RAC on LINUX. Author- Umadevi Byrappa.
Which states on page 10: To Use NAS for RAC database file storage select the file system storage option in OUI. or the Clustered file system storage option in DBCA.
With which i disagree. File storage option of oracle 10g RAC only shows.
    1. Clustered File system.
    2. ASM
    3. Raw Devices.
When i try to select Cfs and select the shared directory on NFS it says. < Directory_Name> is not a clustered file system or Shared on Both <Server_1> < Server_2>. and at this point of time i m stuck.
    1. I dont want to use OCFS as its not supporting NAS.
    2. Selecting CFS doesnt recognise mounted shared volume as valid storage device option can only store OCRfile and CSS file.
    3. So, I have to use ASM.. with zero padded files..which i dont want to because no other option. ( PART NO. B10766-02 PAGE C-6)
Also, I would like oracle to provide Back up Recovery Option or Document which tells me how could i Recover Database when i use Zero Padded Files.
What would be the best Option in the above scenario ?
I hope by applying patch or with workaround somehow it shows Filesystem ONLY.I'll be the happiest man in this Case.
Any suggestions and corrections are most welcome. I wish i m wrong.
    Nadeem ( [email protected] )

NFS isn't a clustered file system at all - by RFC it is an exported file system with access controls
If your vendor offers an NFS solution over and beyond that - more power to them. However that isn't "NFS"..
    http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3010.html
You can use NFS in a clustered server environment (to mount apps, read only data and for synchronous access to files), however it doesn't support the concurrency out of the box for RDBMS transactions - if a vendor is supporting this promise then that is for you to decide.
However i stand by my statement that NFS is a file system exported across your network and not a full clustered file system.

  • Single best external storage solution for Mac Pro & MacBook Pro ...?

    Hello,
I'm still waiting for the Mac Pro delivery I have around me something like four external hard drives from different vendors and different sizes and all containing important data ... it is really a mess, cables, lack of redundancy, etc.
I wanted to replace all these once and for all by a single elegant long-lasting and reliable solution to combine with my new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro. The best I could find was OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 8.0TB containing four internal HDD in double RAID with multiple possible setups: RAID 0 and RAID 1, RAID 10 configurations:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEQX2T8.0S/
Looks like an excellent choice for the only one external storage solution! does anyone has experience with this model? are there better contenders?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Best regards,
    Giovanni

    Giovanni,
I have the OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 (6 TB) external HD array in a Raid 5 configuration (as received from OWC). I have found it to be excellent when connected to my Mac Pro using a PCI SATA card and the SATA output on the Elite-AL Pro Qx2. The speed of the system under Raid 5 easily supports all but uncompressed high definition video, and the system came with Prosoft's Data Backup software which does an excellent job of backing up other external drives installed on my Mac Pro.
I highly recommend the Qx2 and think you will find it is a good single source solution to providing you with reliable and safe storage for your data. With Raid 5 if one of the HD's in the Qx2 fails, you simply remove it and allow the system to rebuild the data when you insert a new HD. Thus unless two HD's fail simultaneously (high unlikely) you are protected against data loss. Note also that your Mac Pro does not have to be left on while the Qx2 is rebuilding.

Has anyone here used the Areca ARC-1221X RAID controller with the new Mac Pro, featuring the Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processor?
This card is included with the CineRAID 8TB external storage we also want to purchase to use with the new Mac Pro.

    Hi,
Can you please verify that if processor on the new ARC-1221x included with the CineRAID is an Intel IOP 348 1.2GHz (1200MHz) processor? The original ARC-1221x had an 800MHz Intel IOP341 I/O processor on the board.
