Is the iMac 1.25 ghz AirPort compatible?

I'm considering going wireless because my wife has a MacBook through her school and wants to be able to use it more at home. Our home iMac is now five years old and is our main computer for the family ... will an AirPort Extreme (or Express? That's another question of which one would be better) be compatible with this older system?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes. You're iMac is compatible with Airport Extreme and Airport Express. Just add the Airport Extreme Card.
As for whether the APE Base Station of AP Express is better, I can't really help with that. I have never owned or used Express. You can take a look at the Extreme's Page and Express's page for more info.

  • After the upgrade to the new firmware, time capsule disconnect the imac (wireless connection by airport) after few seconds. NEED HELP!

    I have:
    imac 24" (year 2008) OsX 10.6.8.
    Time Capsule  (year 2010) 2Tb.
    Wireles connectio by Airport v5.6.1
    Problem:
Since the last firmware update of the time capsule, the connection is lost after a few seconds.
Note: a windows 7 pc is connected to the time capsule too, without problems!
    Can someone help me, please!

Go back to 7.6.1 at least.. do not use 7.6.3 firmware.. as it has wireless issues.
You go back by selecting firmware update with option key held down.

  • Imac 2.7 GHZ Vs. imac 2.9 GHZ?

    Hello,c 2
I'm planning on purchasing an imac, and i cant decide between the (21 inch) imac 2.7 ghz or the imac 2.9 ghz
I'm a vlogger on youtube, so i use Final Cut Pro X a lot, so i basically do a lot of editing etc. I'm also a gamer, so ill be playing league of legends or something as well.
What i basically want to know is, is it worth getting the 2.9 ghz? Will it actually make a difference? I read that the 2.9 ghz is slightly better for gaming, but im not downloading a bunch of games, i just play one.
Also, is it better just to get the 2.7 ghz and purchase a fusion drive instead of buying the 2.9 ghz? and lastly, if buying a 2.7 ghz with a fusion drive is better, would upgrading to the 16G of ram be better than purchasing the fusion drive instead?
    Thank You.

First the 21 inch screen iMac models are not upgradeable in the future, at all!
They are, basically, glued up, sealed up computing " appliances", now.
So, you need to order an iMac of this size and model with everything you think you may need in the future, up front at the time of ordering/purchasing.
My reccommendation? Get the 21 inch model with the optional and fastest i7 3.1 Ghz CPU. Get the largest optional Fusion drive available and, order this iMac with additional 16 GBs of RAM.
This will be great for video and FCX, it will, probably, be pretty good for gaming, but it won't be a high end gaming machine as you are stuck with the base 512 MB VRAM GPU.
Basically, for video work, everything in a Mac should be as fast and large as possible. A very fast CPU, GPU, lots of RAM and lots of hard drive storage space. You have 3 out of the 4 of these requirements.
As an additional immediate purchase, Budget for a large capacity, external hard drive for backups and additional data storage. You'll need this, also.
And budget within the first year of ownership for 3- year extended AppleCare warranty coverage.

  • Running Mavericks on an iMac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, I've been trying to install Adobe CS3. All components install except InDesign. Is this an installation disk problem or is it not compatible with the OS?

Running Mavericks on an iMac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, I've been trying to install Adobe CS3 Design Premium. All components install except InDesign. Is this an installation disk problem, or is there a compatibility problem with the OS?

I fear that you are trying to download OLDER Software on a newer Operating Sysytem Meaning that you need to Install the Latest Version of Adobe on the Newer Operating System for it to work Properly. Be sure to always check the minimum System Requirements.

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

  • I bought a new imac running Loin and Office 2011. The server we use to access emails runs exchange 2003 and my IT person says the imac is not compatible with the server. The server does not want to let me access using any email software.

I bought a new imac running Loin with Office 2011. I am the only mac in the office and the Server we use to access emails runs exchange 2003 and my IT person says the imac is not compatible with the server. The server does not want to let me access using any email software other than webmail access through our website. It looks as though 2011 is not compatible with 2003 per some searches online, but what are some options I have to gain full access again? I purchased parallels in hopes that this my help and I am able to use remote desktop connection to log on to server but can not drag and drop files I need. There is a shared drive on that Server we all use to exchange files.
The two main issues are gaining access to my email again and ability to drag and drop files from mac to pc. I hope this is enough info to get some solutions.
PS - IT person says my iMac's IP is what his server does not understand so that is why I can not login.

Office 2011 is not compatbile with Exchange 2003.
I suggest you post further Office related questions on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac software:

  • I purchased a new MacBook Pro, and a 2TB AirPort router. I have a 2007 24" iMac that I have been syncing my phone on for years. Is there a way to network these 3 devices so I can sync my phone on my MacBook and access the iMac data?

I am not familiar with networking in the least. I feel like, being as it is 2015, this is not an unreasonable request. Basically, I do not make much use of my desktop iMac anymore, other than as a backup computer and to sync my phones. My primary computer is my MacBook Pro. I'd like to make my MacBook my primary computer for downloading music, saving and editing photos and images, and syncing my phones, but i'd like to do so without clogging the hard drive on the MacBook.
Basically, what I am hoping to do is network my iMac, and MacBook Pro through the 2TB AirPort, and sync my phone through the MacBook without losing all data (ideally, I'd like to be able to sync through either computer at will).
Additionally, something like 100GB of images are stored on the iMac, and I specifically purchased the MacBook with the upgrades to do image editing on, but again, I don't know how to transfer the data to the AirPort, and I don't want to slow down the MacBook by storing all of the data on the laptop.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.
    -Bryan

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

  • When I connect imac to network via airport all devices on the network lose internet connectivity

Every device stays connected to the network but the internet stops working. Usually the network will continue to function normally for about five minutes when the imac connects, but then every device loses internet access via the network, NOT just the imac. As soon as I turn off the imac's airport they get internet connectivity back. A wired network connection to the imac seems to work OK.
The airport is configured as "Using DHCP"
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
As far as I know, no changes have been made to the computer recently (but it is not my machine and the owner isn't here atm)
I found one other resource with the same problem here:
    http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/internet-networking-wireless/183185-turning-my- macbook-airport-breaks-internet-connection-entire-network.html
but the solution didn't work. When I deleted the three files mentioned in the solution in that thread, my problem is not solved.
If you have any ideas or need more information I would love to hear from you.
    Thanks guys.

Yes it is possible that the two machines are creating a Computer-to-Computer network and are not going through the Express.

This is generally a Lion error.. and you will need 5.6 utility to get access to the disk area.
So download the real utility. Run it instead of v6 toy version.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Go to the manual setup, disk page and click on disconnect all users.. that will unmount all users connected to the disk and allow it to start working. But there are a number of other issues that are possible cause. Pondini lists some of them.

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Get an external hard drive on which to store some of your files after which you can
erase the data from your internal drive to free up space.
      5. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      6. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      7. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

I recently had to purchase a new iPhone 4S.  I backed up my old 4s to my iMac and when I went to restore, I got this message "iTunes could not restore the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored".  I just purchased the iPhone 4S today so I know it's not the phone.  How can I get my information back?

If it's corrupt, generally it would be lost.
However, there is third-party software out there that can retrieve some of the data, those of which however I could not recommend as I have never done so myself.
Also, if the old 4S was running a more recent software version than the current 4S, that may cause the issue however usually iTunes tells you exactly that.
Good luck in retrieving that information.
