Is the Intel i5 considered an old processor
Hi,
I’m ready to buy an iMac with a Quad-Core Intel Core i5 (I don’t go with the i7 because I’m in short budget) but I was wondering if this processor is already old and somehow will be replaced soon. The reason for this question is because I don’t want to buy something that may be obsoleted in a few months and ended up with a computer that is not compatible with new technology in the next few years.
Does anybody know if apple is coming out with a new processor soon?
Is the i5 considered an old processor?
I’m not totally desperate to get this new computer; I could wait if I need to since I have a MacBook that works fine.
What would you do? Wait?
Thanks
The i5 processor was introduced in late 2009. I would not say that it is brand new, but it's not ancient history yet either.
No one here can tell you what Apple's plans are for the future, or if they can they will not because they are under non-disclosure agreements.
Remember, your computer does not become less capable because a newer model comes out. It becomes obselete when your expectations of it change to the point where it can not meet those expectations.
Buy a computer when you need it and use it until your needs change to where you need something different. Chasing the newest and greatest processor is a futile exercise. There is always something newer and better around the corner. Needing to have the latest greatest thing is expensive and ultimately futile.
Best of luck.

I have a M Series (My guess it is M90) ThinkCentre desktop with Intel hd graphics + i5 650 processor (detailed info in pictures below), one vga port on the central unit, I would like to upgrade dual monitors to extend desk.
I checked online, someone said a Intel hd graphics doesn't support dual monitor, but some said yes. My questions are:
1, could I upgrade to dual monitors with the Intel hd Graphics+i5 650 processor instead of upgrading a ATI video card?
2, if 1 is yes, can I attach a vga 15-pin splitter to connect dual monitors? Thanks.
Solved!
Go to Solution. That model does support 2 monitors, the 2nd using the DisplayPort (DP.) Not many monitors support DP as yet, if needed, a DP to DVI, HDMI or VGA can be bought. Lenovo sells them, or I also recommend an AMD approved adapter :
http://support.amd.com/en-us/recommended/eyefinity-adapters
you need a single-link (if DVI), passive adapter. And not mini-DP.
Search on "M90, monitor" in the search engine above right for more information. -
Where and what kind (brand) of external, mobil hard drive can I get to back up my PowerBook G4 without the Intel processor? I have 93GB of Memory and operating system OS X 10.5.8. Thank you.
Donald Morgan wrote:
Gee, I hope I understand this right, you can get a Terabyte from Walmart for around $120.00.
There is one major problem with the drives you get from just walking into a Walmart or Costco or Best Buy: They are usually one interface only, and that interface is USB. That's not a problem for new Macs with USB 3, where mass-market USB 3 drives are a great and cheap solution.
But for regular transfers with older Macs, I have always found great benefit in using a drive with multiple interfaces that bridge old and new Macs and PCs. The USB version in the PowerBook, USB 2.0, has always been a slow solution. It's slower than FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and Gigabit Ethernet. For my regular backups on G3/G4 Macs and most MacBook Pros, FireWire or Gigabit Ethernet have always been the way to go because they just save so much time over USB 2.0. Maybe not for small incremental daily backups, but when moving large collections of music/videos/photos, or especially when migrating to newer equipment.
That is why like the others here, I greatly prefer the OWC drives with multiple interfaces. The slow, awful USB ports work well for old FireWire-less Macs and for PCs, while FireWire 800 and eSATA get full-disk backups and mass transfers done in a fraction of the time as the poor soul waiting for USB 2.0 to finish. (Today's multi-TB disks can take hours to copy even with FireWire 800.)
If the priority is to save money over saving time, a cheap USB drive is fine, and USB 3 will be much faster than FireWire when you get a new Mac. But I've long valued the ability of a multi-interface drive from OWC to plug into any Mac or PC put in front of me and be able to transfer data using whatever the fastest option is.
I wouldn't worry about formatting drives from non-Mac stores since that takes about 10 seconds in Apple Disk Utility. -
My iphone 4s will not snyc on my mac at home; I'm running 10.4.11 and do not have the intel processor; on my work computer my iphone is recognized as a device in itunes, but my music library can only be located on my older mac at home.
The iPhone REQUIRES OS X 10.5.8 or higher. This is clearly stated in the documentation and on the web site. There is no magic that will make it work with 10.4.x.

Is there a big difference between Intel Iris Pro graphics and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory, is it worth paying an extra $200?
Software support of graphics card is key. If no graphics card is mentioned in software specs, then it can be ignored. Mostly games and high end image and video graphics software are affected.

When trying to download Mountain Lion, I get the following message: "We could not complete your purchase. OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion requires a Core 2 Duo, .... processor." However, my iMac lists a 2GHz Intel Core Duo as its processor. Help?
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Mountain Lion is a 64-bit operating system, and an Intel Core Duo processor is only 32-bit, so you can't use Mountain Lion on your Mac. You can keep using your actual OS X version or buy a new Mac if you want Mountain Lion -
the 3d features require 'use graphics processor' is enabled in the performance preferences. Your video card must meet the minimum requirements and you may need to check that your driver is working correctly

The Intel Mac Mini uses on-board graphics... how good are they?
I'm seriously considering getting an Intel Mac Mini and telling all my friends to get one, too. However, there's one problem - the graphics.
The whole reason I'd want an Intel Mac would be so that I could dual-boot into Windows Vista (when it comes out) in order to play the latest games.
How suitable are the on-board graphics for gaming? Would it be able to play Halo and Command & Conquer Generals well?
Basically, I want to know if it's the equivalent of a 64 MB graphics chip in speed, or if having on-board graphics makes it a bit slower. Does it have hardware acceleration? And is it suitable for smooth casual gaming at an average resolution?I am very uneasy about finding integrated graphics in the new mini too.
When I first saw the new Mini website on Apple's website I was so excited "intel processor", "4 usb ports", "faster drives" but something was missing from the website; the "graphics" sub-category. I instantly wondering what was up with that, thinking right away obviously the graphics weren't good enough to brag about. I was right. On Apple's MacMini website, on the "Intel Core" sub-category page, bottom of the page, right side there's a weee comment on integrated graphics, "oh." was my only thought.
It's really disappointing to see integrated graphics in the new Mini. That AND the increase in price. The price of the Intel iMac dropped by $100 when it got introduced, but the Intel Mini's price goes up $100 upon introduction, further closing the price between the iMac and the Mini and making the iMac looking more and more attractice in terms of features-performance-price-value. I better run out and buy a Intel iMac before Apple removes the miniDVI-out port (which I'm predicting it will be removed in the next iMac revision)
Hopefully some Intel MacMini review tests in the coming weeks will reveal better-than-expected graphics performance.
I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned this but... doesn't anyone here see that Apple has given us a preview of what's to come by putting integrated graphics in the new Intel MacMini? -- Anyone? I'll tell you -- we're going to see the exact same integrated graphics in the upcoming Intel iBooks, that's what.

Using the Hard Drive from my old iMac
I have just purchased a new 2.8 Intel core 2 duo iMac and was wondering if I could somehow use the hard drive from my old iMac.
What I have done is buy a case for the hard drive from my old iMac thus making it an external. The question that I have is that since it [the old hard drive] is running OS 10.4 will my new Intel iMac even recognize it.
I would like to somehow switch ALL my vast iTunes library from the old hard drive to my new Intel iMac without have to resort to making as many as 15 data disk. If such a thing is possible how do I go about doing so?
Another thing that I would like to do once my iTunes library is on my new Intel iMac is use the old hard drive [since it is 500GBs] as the platform for all my games and my publishing interest. Doing so would allow me to free up space that I could more readily use for other interest on the 350GB hard drive that my new iMac came with.
HOW do I go about wiping the old hard drive clean so that I can use it thus?
Thank you all for any and all help and insight that you might give me.You might also consider connecting the two computers into a network, and then transferring the files you need, or even keep both computers online and use network sharing to access files from both computers.
In reference to your question, if you extract the hard drive from your old Mac and put it in an external case, your new Mac will read it no prob. (10.4 is compatible with 10.5). The hard drive can be formatted (wiped clean) using Disk Utility application (click Application, Utilities).
In terms of importing files from old to the new Mac, you might consider using using the automated OS X feature to transfer user files from another Mac. -
I have been hibernating quietly at school with an Intel Core Duo T7300 on XP, and have been insulated from the madness of multi-core processors. I gather that there were problems with installing the XP Virtual Machine on Vista under Quad architectures,
but that these eventually got resolved in 2009.
The newer problem is concerned with installing the XP Virtual Machine on Win7x64 with greater than four cores in the cpu architecture. Others have mentioned this problem over this past Summer 2012. The problem is that at the very last step of
the complete install, Win7x64 reports a failure to install the XP Virtual Machine, and with no further comment.
Apparently KB/2519949 gave a temporary (MSFT qualifies this as "temporary") hotfix solution to this problem for AMD 8-core chips in the Bulldozer series. However MSFT cautions that this problem requires further research. This was earlier
this Summer 2012.
My problem is that I have an Intel 2xE5-2620 duo-processor cpu architecture (2x6=12 cores, 24 cpus in Windows). The cpu architecture is both Intel, and with far more than the old standard of four cores. The XP Virtual Machine in Win7x64 will
not install, as described above.
I have an armload of new 64-bit software all of which has installed pristinely in Win7x64 under this 2xE5-2620 Intel architecture. However, I have one very important piece of legacy (latest version incompatible beyond XP type of legacy) technical writing
software that is critical to my PhD thesis. In need the XP Virtual Machine for this, and I have no idea how to get it. My PhD thesis supervisor also needs this particular piece of "legacy" technical writing software for his new book on Probability
Theory.
1011::1000I have news about this issue with XP Mode on Workstation machines. I have actually known about this for a couple of months, but it has not been until these Christmas 2012 holidays that I have had a chance to follow up with an implementation.
In review, I purchased a Workstation computer for scientific computation purposes this past August 2012. My chipset is an Intel 2x E5-2620 for a total of 12 cores, and it turns out that this was not the problem for XP Mode. My OEM shipped this
machine with Windows 7, but without XP Mode, and there is a reason why.
As an aside, it should be mentioned that the main line MSFT OS, Windows 7 or 8, is what I want for this machine, and not Server 2012. The reason is that most of the scientific computation and technical writing software that I use is written only for
Windows, and not for Server. Then also hopefully Hyper-V can do in Windows 8 most of what XP Mode is doing for me in Windows 7.
My dealer was able to tell me, when he got back from holidays in late September, that the reason that XP Mode failed to install on this Workstation, and the reason it was not included by the OEM, was that the original HDD configuration was for RAID (3 available
bays) and formatted for drives of at least 1TB in size. Although the original HDD installation was only a single HDD with only 500GB, the machine was equipped to have something much larger installed. But this format excluded the possibility of
XP Mode.
So we changed the hard drive installation to something that I preferred. We installed Windows 7 on a 480GB SSD, and I installed all my software on this drive, as well as all my important data. Most importantly, since this drive is less than 1TB,
we could use the MBR format which allows XP mode. Then we also formatted the original HDD of 500GB in MBR, and decided to run it with Intel RST. This second drive is for unimportant data, and large files. For backup we chose a 2TB USB 3.0
external. In this setting, installing Windows XP Mode was easy, as the only thing we needed to do was modify BIOS to enable virtualization which was part of the Intel 2x E5-2620 chipset already.
I am very pleased with XP Mode. The scientific writing software for my thesis that I was worried about does actually run in Windows 7 under compatibility mode, but there have been some huge advantages to installing in in XP Mode as well. I still have licensed
copies of Office 2003, Acrobat Pro 9, and MathType 5.2, and other old software as well. I now have all new software, for example Office 2010 (64-bit), Acrobat Pro 10 (32-bit for 64-bit), and MathType 6.8 (64-bit), and lots of other things. However, now that
I have my scientific wrtiting software (for which the maker has not caught up with Windows Vista/7) installed in XP Mode, I have also installed WORD 2003 with MathType 5.2 in XP Mode. My scientific writing software can translate WORD 2003/MathType 5.2 in RTF
format to LaTeX. So lets hope these guys eventually catch up with Windows 7 and 8.
I am also using XP Mode to archive a large block of my old data from the XP days. I still have licensed copies of the out of date software. And I would rather not update every single old file I have to a current format. So altogether, XP Mode is working
out quite well. It is very fast with my Intel 2x E5-2620 and maximum RAM.

Is the Intel HD 3000 graphics card unsupported?
As for as I'm aware, the Intel HD 3000 graphics, is integrated and not dedicated
Why is it that my old 2009 MBP, with GeForce 9400m/9600m (Whichever it is), performs better than the 2011 macbook pro intergrated graphics.
For example on the system requirements for call of duty 4, it shows all the geforce cards being compatible, and the ati/amd ones. however it shows that integrated graphics are not supported...
Why in 2 years is there a downgrade in graphics?
And where does the Intel HD 3000 stand in terms of performance? The Intel HD 3000 graphics in the new Intel Sandy Bridge processors is on par with NVIDIA Geforce 310M and AMD Radeon HD 5450. It is a new design, not old. It's more intended for users who don't need high-end graphics power. The Intel HD 3000 is more suited for business users or students who also like to play the occasional game. If you're a Modeller, Animator, VFX Artist or one that is an avid gamer then opting for the MBP 15" or 17" models with AMD Radeon HD 6750M would be better.

So, I went on the Switchable Graphics options. I put Counterstrike Global Offensive on the "High Performance" option. Which means it should be on my AMD Radeon R9 M275 2GB, right? I tried monitoring what GPU it uses as well, but that's bugged and won't tell me.
Anyways, on low settings, CS:GO lags to hell! What? This is a quad core i7 processor with a 2 GB card. Why can't I play CS:GO without lag. I'm talking about below 20 FPS. Even though it SAYS Optimum or High Performance, it seems to be running off of the Intel HD graphics.
Thanks.I know this is an old thread but I had the same question and found the solution.
So, anyone else who is curious, open the AMD Catalyst Control Center and check the settings for the "Switchable Graphics Global Settings" and the "Switchable Graphics Application Settings".
That should fix the switchable graphics issue.
