Is the iPod crashing my machines?

I recently bought a refurbished iPod Mini for my mom to replace the one that died on her. However, since she's got it she's been experiencing the following problems:
- Message coming up on screen that iPod files corrupted and needs restoring
- Occasional crashing of iTunes when syncing
- Crashing of PC
I took it from her and plugged it into my MacBook and what immediately caught my eye was the fact the iPod icon was coming up as a disc icon instead of the usual little iPod one. However, before I had chance to take it out of disc mode (assuming that's what it's in) it crashed my Mac too. Twice.
Sooooo does anyone have ideas as to what I can do to fix it?
Oh and before I forget, my mom has restored the iPod several times and I think she's reset it a few times too.

My best bet is that it's the iPod files that are corrupted in which case all you can really do is restore it. Also, reinstall iTunes just as a precaution.

  • Hi have been using the classic for 4 years, of late whenever i load more than 4000 songs the ipod crashes and shuts down. till 3800 songs there seems to be no problem. do ipods have a finite life?

the classic ipod has crashed 4 times in the last 2 months. till i load 3800 to 3900 songs there seems to be no problem. but after that it just crashes and instructs me to restore to factory settings. just want to know if ipods have a finite life and need changing after this. i need urgent help at least if that is true i can save the trouble of loading songs every other week
    thanks and regards

Yep, iPod classic has life of about 2 years before the hardisk, starts to suffer from arthritis.
Here is a excellent post on iPod  diskdiagnostic by regular tt2.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2362776?start=0&tstart=0
You can also look into getting the iPod hardisk replaced by SSD/Compact Flash,  just google "iPod SSD replacement" or you can search in youtube, on how to do it yourself, if you got steady hands and hawkeye.
    SSD Capacity is expensive,
    Have a nice day!

  • The ipod crashed

My ipod was plugged in and i tried updating it but then everything froze and then the ipod reseted and now when i try to put songs onto my ipod all it says ius that it was unable to save all the data for the file J: The data has been lost WHAT HAPPENED?

    mame6695,
It sounds like you have a different issue.
This happened because of auto-syncing. If you had recently cleared your iTunes library (except for at least those 50 songs that were also on your iPod), iTunes automatically-synced to your iPod, and cleared all the content off of it except what was in the iTunes library.
In the future, if you know that iTunes has content deleted off of it that is still on the iPod (that you want to keep), try preventing the auto-syncing from happening by following the instructions below:
1 - Open iTunes, and leave it up and running.
2 - Get ready, and connect your iPod.
3 - As soon as your iPod displays "Do Not Disconnect", immediately begin to press and hold the "Shift" and "Ctrl" keys together for about 30 seconds until you're sure that iTunes doesn't plan to do anything to your iPod.
If you have additional questions about this, please start your own thread (since this is not really on the same topic as the original post).
    I hope this helps,
    -Kylene
If any post helps or solves your issue, please mark it that way accordingly. Thank you for helping the boards!

  • Ipod crashes after going through airport x ray security

Every time after my 3rd generation ipod classic goes through the airport security x ray unit, and then I subsequently connect it to my Mini, the ipod crashes and I have to reset my ipod. Does anyone know why?

You would have to turn the iPad On. Don't believe it would hurt the iPad. The only problem might be that you would be setting the exposure in the lighted area & the Xray machine is probably dark inside.
But I would ask one of the TSA persons first. They might not allow it. They might not like the blinking red light.

  • IPods crash and can't back up library - HELP

I have had an iPod mini for 1.5 years. My spouse got an iPod (30GB video) recently. When we switch between them to update songs from one library, the iPods crash and have to be reset (even that takes a few tries following instructions on iPod help).
I tried circumventing the problem by copying the library on my laptop from our PC (to have one iPod with one computer, both have XP Pro) with the USB drive but the library won't copy from USB drive to the new iTunes. (it will play songs from USB but won't copy them).
    1. Can I backup the library on another computer?
    2. What is the safest way to create a backup library (CDs in my experience may not last long)?
    3. If we update the computer (hopefully soon) will that mean that we can't copy the library to a new commputer and will lose all the songs we bought?
    4. How can we prevent either iPod from blocking or crashing?
Thanks for any advice and help.

Update: Success! I used my iPod as an external hard drive following these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?viewlocale=en_US
After I reformatted I reinstalled my old iTunes 6 and dragged the folder back to My Music. At first, iTunes wuldn't sync a couple hundred songs to my iPod because I wasn't "authorized" so I had to enter my Apple ID and password. Downloaded latest software for Itunes and iPod and all is good.
Investing in an external hard drive still sounds like a good idea, since this was my first reformat and it was a bit nerve-wracking.

  • IPod Crashed During Sync And Now Its Dead...

    Hi guys,
While syncing my other ipod touch to my computer, i don't know how it happened, but the ipod crashed, and then froze. iTunes said the sync had completed, but the ipod still displayed a frozen 'sync in progress screen'. I hard reset it because it was the only thing that i could do. Now, all that is displayed is an apple logo, however, it does show up in itunes.
Is a restore required? Please advise...

I fixed it. Yay for me.

  • IPod crashes when attempting to play Logic songs

I am quite new at Logic and have two questions:
    1
When I bounce a Logic project to iTunes, I have no problem listening to the song on my computer - in iTunes. But when i sync my iPod and then click on the song there, the iPod 'crashes' (needs rebooting) - and when it's ready again, nearly all the battery power has gone.
I have tried most of the options when bouncing ... aiff, wave, mp3, m4p etc ... all of which give the same result.
    2
How come the 2,000 page Logic manuals - as far as I know - never touches upon the subject of mastering?

Sounds like a F^&*ed up iPod. IMO.

Because Logic is mainly used to create music / post production. Not so much for mastering. The guys who created Logic are not mastering engineers..but musicians.
If you want to master with Logic, you CAN. Go get a good book on mastering... there's a few out there.

It is technically not abnormal to have that many crashes, but when they first started a couple of months ago for me, there was usually one or two per week. As of yesterday, the started being more and more frequent. I have tried everything you said before. Unfortunately, that didn't do anything to my ipod. I looked it up here and I saw many people saying it is a hardware failure that it may be caused by jailbreaking or not being updated to the latest version. I currently am in 6.1.3 and I didn't jailbreak my ipod. The main reason is only a hardware failure with the Darwin Kernel.
I really hope that you bought your ipod less than a year ago or I'm not sure if they will give you a new one because of warranty.

  • IPod crashes after attempting to play a video or song!

Alright, I was watching a video on my iPod, when suddenly is freezes and starts making a screeching noise. I reset it, and tried to play it again. All I get is a black screen. I reset it again, and tried to play a different video. Same result. Then after resetting it again, I tried to play a song, and the same thing happens. I tried to play some games, and the default games work fine, but the games downloaded from iTunes don't work. So I restore the iPod in iTunes, and that worked out fine, but when I tried to sync my iPod, Windows says that it can't save it to E:iPod and try saving it somewhere else. I had never had this problem until the iPod stuffed up. Can someone please tell me what is going on, and how it can be fixed?!?

  • How do you manually manage podcasts on the Ipod?

I subscribed to a podcast on my Itunes but didn't want to Automatically Update because I had podcasts on the Ipod from another machine. I found I could click and drag the individual videos from the podcast from Itunes to the Ipod.
After that the videos showed on the big list in Itunes when I showed the list of ALL songs and videos on the Ipod. But once I ejected the Ipod and browsed the menu the videos were nowhere to be found.
I finally bit the bullet and said goodbye to my old podcast and selected "Automatic Update".... probably should've come here first. But does anybody know how this can be avoided?

Just rightclick the iPOd name in iTUnes, hit "iPod Options" and in the following window hit the sub tab named "Podcast" (Not the tab at the very top, the sub one beside musiv, video, contacts ect ect). There you can set the podcast to manual update while keeping everything else auto update like music.

  • Blank Calendar Notifcation iPod Crash

Just wondering if anyone else has run into this.
Occasionally I will get a calendar notification that is blank or that has a meaningless title such as 'T c'.
If I click the center button and dismiss the notification, the iPod crashes and then resets itself.
No harm seems to be done other than that the main menu gets reset to defaults (for now at least..)
Does anyone know if this is a known issue and any potential fix if so?
    Thanks!!

Just now the same restart occurred also by dismissing a real calendar event.

  • A Damsel in Big Distress!  New Dell/ crashed E-machine. Need Ipod to Itunes

Hi, My E-machine crashed. Was running Windows XP with SP2. 4 recovery DVD's were made from what remained of the HD (at Frye's electronics). Bought a new Dell with Vista and can't seem to get my Itunes Site to import from the DVD's. Is there a way that i can put my music into ITunes from my 5th Generation Ipod? I am stumped at this point as some of my music automatically imported from the desktop of the new Dell (after i downloaded info from the recovery DVD's) but the rest must have been unavailable to recover from the old computer as i have a few thousand songs stuck inside the Ipod that i want back on my Itunes site. The IStore did an authorization/unauthorization so i have all but one of my paid video's back (the other was unavailable, but is in my IPod) I know, next time make my own recovery discs - which i will if someone tells me how. But, first, to get back what i have lost. A little help please? I am so sad and have tried everything i can think of before coming here to ask for help. Thanks so very much. Persephone

Please help me out as this is very irritating. This has been happening for the last 20-30 minutes. It had roughly half battery left.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
