Is the iTunes store useless for people outside of America?

Well, you read the title. The world wide web is a beautiful thing, and it gives us access to information from the other side of the world within seconds. More specifically, it allows you to go shopping in online stores from the other side of the world, with a large and diverse selection of products. That was the main reason why I wanted to start using iTunes; I wanted to buy songs, TV episodes, and other things, that were otherwise not available in a practical way due to my localization.
But however, as I am living in Norway, my account only allows me to buy products from the Norwegian store on iTunes. Which is a major paradox and a ridiculous catch to it. Why would I want to do that? Why would I want to browse the same selection of products I can find in a store 5 minutes away from my physical location?
When I can't download songs and videos available on a global web store - content which I pay for with real money - just because I live in another country (notice the paradox), I just have to ask myself: what is the point? Why does the iTunes Store even exist as it does today? I don't know the whole picture and all the factors related to this decision, but I mean, come on. Either allow different nationalities to browse the same broad selection of products, or remove the service altogether for the "other" countries. Sure, it's nice to be able to buy local media without moving anything else than your fingers. But the way it is now, it just kills the purpose of the web. If the service is available globally, it's just not right with availability segregation. After all, it's the world wide web, not the nation wide web.

Yes it does. Information is wonderful.

Providing that they can ship it and legally sell it, yes.
But however, as I am living in Norway, my account only allows me to buy products from the Norwegian store on iTunes. Which is a major paradox and a ridiculous catch to
Yes. that is how it works for every music store in all the countries. Thats how the rights holders choose to do that.
Why would I want to browse the same selection of products I can find in a store 5 minutes away from my physical location?
Not every song in the iTunes store can be bought at a physical brick and mortar store nor do many offer the convenience of buying them at any time of the day and (in most cases on a song by song basis).
Its an alternative that allot of people like.
When I can't download songs and videos available on a global web store
Because the rights holders for the music content (not Apple) want to restrict music purchases by country. Since they own the content, its their choice.
content which I pay for with real money - just because I live in another country (notice the paradox),
Yep thats the ticker. Credit cards can be regionally enforced. Music companies have been looking for ways to do this for a long time. Even restricting CD's were tough to do being the difference between the media type.
Apple would love to sell music globally. They cant.
I don't know the whole picture and all the factors related to this decision,
I'm glad for you, they are complicated. But if you have a physic address and a credit card issued from a different country, you can open up an account from that country.
Either allow different nationalities to browse the same broad selection of products, or remove the service altogether for the "other" countries.
That "feature" exists as a convenience for the few people who can buy content from other countries (who have credit cards and addresses in more than one country). What you are asking for is separate version of iTunes for each country that would have to be maintained separately. Since those select few who can open up multiple accounts for a different country would either require a separate version of iTunes or for two different version to be installed at once.
FOor the best in simplicity, the store is a separate entity from iTunes for which iTunes access the same address (routed by IP address for the right store front).
Plus as I said before, Apple cant do cross border sales, the recording companies don't want it.
After all, it's the world wide web, not the nation wide web.
Content gets restricted by location all the time. There just doesn't exist a universal agreement on what can be done by the internet. You can't just make assumptions that the internet is entirely open. Who gets access to what things is determined by the content owners. If they want to restrict it, there is very little that can be done.

How can i play wordsplosion on my imac?  The apps in the iTunes store are for iPad or iPhone.

The Mac App Store has apps for Mac computers. The iTunes Store does not. You must be running 10.6.8 or later to access the App Store. The App Store is on your computer in the Applications folder and on the Dock.

  • HT1918 cannot change my email account that the iTunes store uses for my login

cannot change my email account that the iTunes store uses for my login

What happens when you try to change it ? You should be able to change by logging into your account on this page : http://appleid.apple.com
Or via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes
You might then need to log out of your account on any devices (iPad, iPhone, IPod Touch) that you have and then log back in so as to 'refresh' the account on them.

  • I am missing the iTunes Store Tabs for Music, Movies, and TV Shows.  How do I add them?

I am missing the iTunes Store Tabs for Music, Movies, and TV shows.  How do I add them?
It is very strange especially not having the Music Tab.  I desperately want to download music...
Please help, anyone please, thank you.

To begin with, I would like to try to explain Apple's confusing nomenclature in regard to iCloud.
Apple have called the whole cloud thing iCloud, there are a number of features under the iCloud umbrella, some of which require their own login. iTunes is one of these, another is what Apple have unfortunately also called iCloud too.
You can use the same Apple ID (account) to login to both iCloud and iTunes, but you don't need to and often users will login to each service using a different ID.
The part that you need to remember is that the services available when you log into iCloud are completely different and unrelated to those when you log in to iTunes. Your iCloud login enables mail, contacts, calendars, find my phone, Back to My Mac, Documents & Data sharing and photostream, it does not affect any of your iTunes services.
To avoid confusion when discussing your problem, when I mention iCloud, I am referring to the services under the iCloud login, Whereas I will refer to the whole cloud thing as The Cloud.
To go back to your question; you cannot merge accounts, but perhaps using one account for iCloud and the other for iTunes will resolve the majority of the reasons you needed to merge to begin with.

  • When i open ibook, the iTunes store asks for my password. it goes away when i press cancel or when i put in my password. why is this happening?

When I open IBook, the ITunes store asks for my password.  It goes away when I press cancel or enter my password.  It seems unnecessary to me.  Why is it doing this?  I already paid for the book.

If you are trying to update information for your apple id then go to appleid.apple.com and click on manage your apple ID... you'll probably have to enter your old email address/password

  • Iphone 6 tells me that "Item not available" in my country UK, when i click on the itunes store icon for the app to open the music, movies or tv shows section of the app. is this a bug?

I am based in the UK and have just got a new iphone 6, everything works well except when i try to turn on the itunes store app -  i can do a search and buy music etc that way, within the app, however, if i go to Music, Movies or the TV shows section within the Store app, i get a message come up saying "Item Not Available" - This item you've requested is not currently available in the UK Store, but it is available in the US store. Tap Change Store to view this item".   I therefore cannot browse the music, movies or tv shows sections at all, nothing shows up except that message.  All my previous itunes purchases have downloaded ok, and i can access them. My apple ID works fine and restrictions on the iphone are turned OFF. The App Store app works normally. Connection etc is all fine and I can access itunes  in the normal way on my ipad and laptop, so this is just an iphone problem. Any ideas? is this a bug? I cant find anyone else with exactly the same problem. By the way, the same message comes up when i click on the red Music icon, on the iphone (situated next to the Safari icon) and then go to the "Store" via that app.  my playlists are in tact, but as soon as i click that Store button, I am told that the Item is unavailable - not that i have chosen any Item lol, I just want to access the store in the normal way. Thank you in advance for any suggestions you can give

It is working now. I no longer get the message about the item not being available in the US and I can access the store.

  • How do you know which games/apps on the iTunes store are for iPod Nano 4G

I am new to iTunes and was wondering if there is any way to determine if a certain game can be used on my iPod other thatn gioing through all the games and clicking on them to find out what the requirements are for each individual game.

or you can just go into the itunes store, click the drop down arrow next to app store. click on 'ipod click wheel games right at the bottom and those are the only ipod nano games. but if you want free ones click here because the ones in the itunes store are £3.99 pls rate this as correct answer thx

  • Why does the itunes store ask for passwords to different accounts?

Sometimes when I sign on to buy something at the iTunes store it will ask me for a password to an old.mac account. Then in ther cases it will ask me for a more current account.
And how do I combine all of the ourchaes from both these accounts into one?

You can't currently combine accounts, nor transfer content from one account to another account - content will remain tied to the account that downloaded it, so only that account will be able to authorise its content, re-download it, and/or download updates to its apps.

  • HT1311 Hi. Ive done all the things suggested to change the location of the itunes store, but for some reason every time i try to donwload an app i get a message saying 'Account not in this store' even though ive entered my uk info and am trying to downloa

So I dont know what to do. can you please suggest something?
    thank you

Are you sure your AppleID is NOT tied to the US store? If you are trying to buy an app from the Swedish store you will be unable to do that. Some apps are only available on certain stores. That is why you get the "Cannot connect to the iTunes store" message when trying to buy that app. Your updates are being done from the US store ; thats why you can update sometimes and sometimes not.
If you keep encountering problems contact iTunes support. They will help you sort it out.

  • Itunes could not connect to the itunes store...only outside my network

I can only connect to the itunes store inside my office network. Even if I create a new user, they can't connect to the store either.
Also even at work, itunes crashed on average 3 or 4 times before it finally works.
Any ideas on resolving this issue?

Just to add to the itunes mystery, I have no problem connecting to itunes at home or at work using Windows via VWware. I’ve also noticed that when using itunes at work, it crashes 3 or 4 times before it finally connects. Also a number of podcast feeds don’t work on the Mac side but are fine on the Windows side.

  • Anybody knows when Apple is releasing the "Apple Store" application for iPhone outside of the US?

When is Apple releasing the "Apple Store" application in any other country than the US?

We're all users on this forum, just like yourself so we would have no more access to that information than you would.

  • Could not complete the iTunes Store Request (for iTunes Plus)

Since the announcement yesterday of the expanded iTunes plus library and the price reduction, I'm finding that if I click on iTunes Plus I always get the 'could not complete' message. Plus, many iTunes plus songs are still showing at 99p, only a few I've found are 79p.
I'm really surprised nobody else has reported this - is it just me?

No it's not just you, I haven't been able to access iTunes Plus either.
I assumed they were busy upgrading that section of the store but it's taking its time and if that was the case then there ought to be a more informative error message.

  • HT201272 I have purchased a movie and elected to download later; when I go to the iTunes store, it shows where it is purchased yet when I go to the movie it ask for it to be purchased, will I be charged twice for the movie I have not downloaded yet?

I purchased the movie "Black Nativity" at midnight and selected to download later; it shows that the movie has been charged in my account for billing, however; I when I go to download the movie, it ask for it to be purchased versus download.  I would like to know if I will be charged again for the movie upon selecting  purchase movie?  I would like some direction as for how to download the movie that I already purchased.

Clicking on its purchase price again may result in you being charged again. Does the Store > Check For Available Downloads menu option download it
Or does it show under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage for downloading
