Is the MAC PRO right for me?

I am in the market for a new MAC since I need to upgrade to CS5 and my old MAC is not INTEL Based, which I found out I need for CS5 and Snow Leopard to work. I would like something at least similar to my old MAC but with enough juice that it keeps me moving and up-to-date. I currently have a PowerPC G5, Processor: Dual 2 GHz, Memory: 2.5 GB DDR SRAM (2004 Model). It would need to be able to run CS5 (InDesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop, Dreamweaver, Bridge & QZID version 5). I am a Graphic Designer mainly creating print design with a small amount of web design such as photo galleries etc. Would the MAC PRO Quad-Core or 8-Core be a suitable replacement? See link: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/mac_pro?mco=MTg5MTY5NDQ
I appreciate any suggestions you can offer.

One of the big differences between a MacPro and all other desktop Macs is the abiltiy with a MacPro to add fast/big external storage.
An iMac, a Mini, MacBook or even the MacBookPro, all have limitations in that regard. The MacPro is able to take a PCIe card for very fast and diverse types of external storage from simple and robust eSATA storage on up through SAS, hardware RAID, Fiber Channel and so on. The sky is the limit.
The afore mentioned iMac, MacBook or Mini all have Firewire as the storage limitation. Or USB, except I would never recommend USB over Firewire. Firewire 800 is slower than a single hard drive. So if you move a lot of data files you will find that Firewire is a performance choke point.
MacBookPro has Thunderbolt, and it will one day fullfil the promise for fast externals storage plus other stuff - and at reasonable prices. Choosing a MBP is a viable alternate as we start to see products come out for Thunderbolt. Going to have to wait for Thunderbolt to go mainstream before much in the way of choices.
I personally recommend MacPros for photographers and videographers with large databases. Also, with multiple internal drive bays it is easiest to maintain a true backup of every drive, including/especially your boot drive, when you can just drop another drive inside.

  • Home music recording- is the Mac Pro better for this than an iMac?

I know it seems like a daft question but if you were to recommend a Mac for a DECENT home studio and money were (within reason) nearly no object WHAT Mac would you recommend? I always believed that a good sized desktop would be better than an iMac or a MacBook Pro (which is what I have been using for just a hobby home recording set-up) but is this a myth?
Please advise because the Mac Pro looks SCARY. I mean- the options are vast but what DO I NEED as opposed to want? Thank you kindly for reading.

I guess there is nothing wrong with the set-up except that the MacBook Pro is mine and the musicians need their own as I need mine for work.
Ah, I see. I think an iMac should be sufficient. Just be sure to get more RAM than the stock 1GB. Apple's prices on RAM are pretty severe compared to other vendors, so I'd recommend adding RAM after purchase. If you search the iMac forum for "RAM UK", you should find recommendations on reliable vendors. Don't go with lowest price; there's nothing that can cause you fits with a computer system more than flakey RAM, so you want a vendor with a good reputation for quality. I'd suggest bumping the iMac to the maximum 4GB. As to screen size, I tend to prefer having two screens rather than one big one - you can put palettes on the second monitor - so if it's a choice and desk space is sufficient, consider a 20" iMac and a second 17" or 20" screen to go with it.
If you reckon the interface is enough to do the mic justice and that Logic Express or Pro would do when the musicians know and love Cubase then I am happy to help them learn more Mac-based software and get that instead as it is also cheaper and looks like it would make more sense to ME.
Unless they're wedded to Cubase, I'd think that Logic Express should work quite well. You may all want to take a trip to an Apple reseller and take a look at it.
Unless there is a reason to "upgrade" the interface I guess that is one less item to acquire
An upgrade would seem logical only if the Safire isn't giving the quality you want or there aren't enough inputs.
I'd call your recommendation but I am in the UK and will probably talk to the nice folk at Dolphin Music in Newcastle as that is where I got the interface.
I wasn't sure where you were. If you are located in or near Newcastle-On-Tyne, you can find a list of authorized resellers here, or if you're near Manchester or Sheffield or don't mind taking a paddle down, you can drop by an Apple Store. You can then perhaps preview Logic Express before you decide. You might want to call before you make a special trip just to make sure your dealer can indeed demo LE.
Final recommendation; get really good microphones. Garbage in, garbage out, as they say, and having the right microphone, one that's suited for the instrument that's being recorded, is vital. The Neumann is of course high quality, but if you haven't already purchased, check around. You can find really good mics for less than Neumann charges; unless things have changed, you pay a bit of a premium for their reputation. AKG used to make really good mics, quite well suited for piano and acoustic guitar in particular, and there are no doubt others as well (my knowledge of specific models is rather out of date).
    Cheers.

EDIT: P.S. If you can find Mix Magazine or EQ Magazine, those are pretty good reading. Lots of tips, product reviews, etc. Also, you can read a brief review of Logic Express 8 here:

  • Is the Mac Pro good for me?

Okay i am currently intrested in a Mac Pro. I am 17 and am switching over from pc to mac. Now i Was wondering is a Mac Pro in the long run a better computer than a Macbook Pro? How long does a Mac Pro last compared to a macbook pro? I know i want to get final cut studio. And run other programs like garage band...btw what type of software package does garage band come in and is it preloaded on a mac? anyone have any good experiences with mac pros that they would like to share? I am looking at a buget of about 3200 ish and i will most likely get a used one from ebay. also what type of monitors can i use on it? only apple ones? I plan on asking a lot of questions on this forum.

    the cool guy wrote:

They will both last indefinitely. My Macs stay in some kind of service for around 7 years each. However, if you are asking which one stays current for longer, with the Mac Pro it's obviously easier to upgrade the RAM, disks, optical drives, and video card with newer ones later. Also, being a desktop, it's going to have better ventilation which can lengthen a computer's life, since heat is the enemy. And a MacBook Pro will likely suffer bumps and vibration when you transport it, while a Mac Pro is almost never moved. On the other hand, my PowerBook is still going strong after almost 5 years.
    the cool guy wrote:
now how much does a gig of ddr cost? do i need apple only or can i get it from some where else?
You should buy RAM from somewhere other than Apple, because Apple charges way too much. It does need to have the proper heat sinks on it. My Mac Pro contains RAM from this company and also this company, since I upgraded it twice. Both sets of RAM are still running reliably, and I have also bought drives from both companies.

  • Is the mac pro good for me (specific need)

    Hi all,
I am looking for a computer to do a lot of number crunching and are having a hard time researching whether the 8 core mac pro will give the performance boost i hope.
We have an (C++) application that does intensive number crunching which we need to run multiple of times at the same time (eg. ~50 times) on win xp.
We currently run them on a quad core Dell system which works okay - but will the performance roughly double on the Mac Pro?
The question I'm really asking will the system spread the load across the 2 processors and their cores even though the application has not been built to utilise multi-processors?
Hope you know what i mean and can help me,
    thanks,
    alan

    i just read this:
    http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:fEWgf8PD2E0J:download.microsoft.com/download/ f/1/e/f1ecd771-cf97-4d98-9a1b-b86e3f24e08f/multicorehyperthreadbrief.docwin+xp+number+of+coressupported&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=uk&client=firefox-a
(google version of the doc release by MS).
The Mac pro has 2 processors each with 4 (quad) cores and therefore win xp pro should be fine.
The doc says win xp pro supports up to 2 processors and each can have dual core, but i imagine quad core is fine too (but probably wasn't around when the doc was written)

  • When is the Mac Pro due for new chips?

Doesn't Intel have 8 cores? Newer FSB (very important).
As I contemplate a new MAC PRO, am wondering when we can expect a new MAC PRO and what the chips should be like (any ideas?), faster speed, faser FSB, more cores, 16 core Mac Pro for same price as current mac pro.
Also read that ZDNET released software for Mac Pro where it benchmarked a 2.8 over clocked that beat a 3.2 by quite a lot. That's very good news as these chips run cool anyway and newer future chips should be even cooler which in theory could mean 8 cores running 4.2 and faster.
Last, while a good deal, how strong for rendering (or is it a plain 3/4th slower, is a 3.0 dual core iMac compare to MacPro? With the glossy though, wouldn't that make color correction hard to work with or can you calibrate?
Been a tough few months. Please pray for some new work.
    Thanks guys and gals.

    Hi Hi I'm A Mac;
Probably the day after you buy one, they will come out with one that has all of that.
Seriously, no one here will be able to answer that question for you.

  • Is the Mac Mini right for me?

I've been fighting with my PC for years, and I am finally giving up. I'm looking forward to joining the Mac community. I want to buy a mac mini with the new Leopard OSX(10.5), however, I have some unique requirements:
    - I live on a boat in Avalon Harbor, Catalina Island, Southern California.
    - The natural choice for me would be a laptop computer.(Currently a Toshiba)
    - Power consumption is an important factor
    - I need a new TV, and I've acquired a KVH TracVision II satellite tracker to
    use with it.
    - I'm looking at a Vizio VX37L with the following specs:
    - Native Resolution: 1366 x 768 Format: 16 x 9
    - Input Formats: 1080i 720p HD 480p DVD 480i Normal TV
    - Inputs Supported: 1368x768 1024x768 800x600 720x400 640x480
    - Connections: HDMI w/HDCP
    - Inputs: Comb.NTSC/Ant/Cable/ATSC HDTV etc. 2xHDMI Stereo S-Video RGB
I have trouble with my eyesight, and a 37" monitor about 5' away might be a good solution, but not if it doesn't work as a package, and not if the resolution isn't HD-sharp. I've been reading on this forum of several difficulties experienced by mini users. This flies in the face of Apple's salesman, who says the mini is purposed to be monitored by a tv. Am I on the right track, or should I stick with the laptop?
Sure would appreciate your input to my dilemma
    Dave

I think the problem you have is not that the mini isn't capable of what you want it to do, and that if it works as expected that it will provide you a workable solution, but that some TVs are just not quite ready for prime time as computer displays, because as yet TV manufacturers are not widely adopting standards and designing their product for this kind of use.
As such, the question is whether the specific TV you are proposing will work well or not. Much depends on whether it signals the correct data to the mini or not. Some do, and many do not.
However, the salesman who claimed the mini is intended to be used with a TV is talking out of his hat. It is designed to be capable of it, and many have used them that way with great success, but if the salesman was right, Apple would hardly have decided to develop and market the Apple TV device, which is their 'official' way to connect an Apple product to a TV, and natively has most of the common range of connectors for the purpose, whereas the mini does not.
In most instances where a modern TV signals correctly to the Mac, the result is excellent, and where it does not, it can usually be configured to work well using one or other of the DisplayConfigX or SwitchResX utilities, but unless there is a user here with a mini and the same make and model of TV and who has reported, or can report, on the result, the only way you can be sure is to take try the combination.
In terms of whether the mini is the 'right' system for you - the answer is that it certainly draws relatively low power in the same overall range as equivalent laptops, and it is a very powerful system in its own right so unless you were into something like professional video or image editing, it's not likely to disappoint. As such, and assuming you are desirous of moving to MacOS and away from Windows, in my view perhaps the best way to approach this is to get the mini, and then take it to your local TV retailer and set it up with the TV of your choice and see if it works correctly. If it does, the problem is solved, and if not, either try a different TV or start playing with one or other of the aforementioned display utilities.
Of course don't forget that with any Intel Mac, including the mini, you can always switch back to Windows using BootCamp (and a copy of Windows of course) if you get homesick!

  • Does Apple sell the mac pro box for shipping a mac pro to a new address

I am being relocated across the country, USA, by my employer. And need to ship my Mac Pro to the new location. Does Apple or any commercial supplier provide a Mac Pro Specific shipping box that can be bought. I.E. that has all the correct foam and spacers for the tower. Thanks.
    Raul

Now is a great time to consider the cost of shipping a 65lb (or more) item all across the country Vs the cost of selling your old Mac and buying a new one when you get there.
The 2009 and later models Geekbench at nearly twice the speeds of the 2008 and previous (at same number of processor and nominal speeds). This is mainly due to Muti-Threading and memory improvements. The memory for the newer models is MUCH cheaper if you need to add on.
I suggest you cost out the shipping, then ask then for that amount toward a system upgrade when you arrive. Or check carefully whether you need to provide documentation of actual shipping or whether estimates will do.

What's the best Mac config for Fireworks?
I can pretty much get whatever Mac I want at work... My boss is sick and tired of watching Fireworks crash all the time... I figure a hefty processor and lots of RAM and maybe a SSD will help…
I should get a Mac Pro right? Which processor?
    • Two 2.40GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon processors (12 cores)
    • Two 2.66GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon processor (12 cores)
    • Two 3.06GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon (12 cores)
Should I get 24GB RAM?? Or is that overkill?
    I'll get a 2TB serial hard drive…
I should get a 512 GB solid state drive offered by Apple right?
Or is it possible to get a larger better 3rd party SSD?
And then maybe two 21" Displays… Two 27s seems a little much… or does it?
    Thanks in advance.

Oh and what about video cards? Or is Apple's default ok? (I'm not doing hard core PhotoShop retouching or anything).

WiFi signals get stronger the closer the machine is to the router and the less interference/blocking of the signal like via walls with metal in them or of thick concrete.
Since the signal emanates outwards in a sphere, your supposed to place the wireless router in a central location in the building so it covers all areas.
The power of the router also has a affect, if your router is old or something not that powerful like a Airport Express, it doesn't have the ability to filter out other signals or enough punch to get through walls etc. or cover a large area as effectively.
If you buy/have a powerful router of newer make and have issues where there is metal in the walls or thick concrete, then you can buy something like OpenMesh and by using Ethernet cables from the back of the router, extend the WiFi signal into other rooms and areas past the blockage.

You can download the trial version (http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html) to convert the PDF back to WORD if you do not have the original. The conversion may not be perfect, but it is typically better than starting from scratch. You may be lucky and get a good result. You might check the settings (in the save screen) to try retain format versus retain text flow. The format version can be a pain to edit since it creates a bunch of text boxes. The flow version may require you to reformat in WORD, but you likely would want to do that anyway.

  • I have a belkin 7 adapter for additional USB slots for my Mac Pro. It was working well till just recently I am getting a message that says the usb port on the Mac Pro is shutting down due to a very high power drain. Then it shuts the usb port down.

I have a belkin 7 adapter for additional usb ports for my mac pro. It worked fine without problems till recently when the message regarding usb port drawing too much power and the computer shuts the port on the mac pro down. The strip comes with its own power supply adapter. The attachments are additional hard drives used as backups and independent data. Other than disconnecting it are there any fixes?

You're getting the message because you're exceeding the available current, probably as a result of bus-powered drives. The power sources for hubs are rather small. Try using drives with their own power supplies.

I have been using a Lightroom 5 including recent upgrades on my Mac Pro laptop for the past 1 year. This was purchased as an upgrade from Lightroom 4 for which I have a serial number. Today I purchased a new Macbook pro and loaded my Lightroom 5 however it is asking for my serial number which I have misplaced. I am unable to trace my serial number anywhere. I have even checked my adobe membership to locate my serial number but it does not seem to have any record which is strange as I have been using this software for over a year now and the previous versions since 2009.
