Is the Mac the new Atari????

Since all this talk about the Intel Mac and the implications it will have on us loyal Mac (the real thing) users, I have had a lot of questions and thoughts. One of them is:
I bagan my music work in my teens (not even that long ago) on one of the later Ataris (for you people who remember) and made my first monies on the Atari. In fact, this Atari is still in my storage and has been ever since the continuing decline of support from software- and hardware developers forced me to switch to Mac. Today, I'm not regreting it of course but it cost me a lot of money at the time, as not only did I change my computer but had to buy everything else around it.
Although the Mac is a completly different machine with almost every software and hardware company supporting it today, I am wondering if it now has the same faith as the faithful Atari. Will I (we all) once again be forced to leave an otherwise GREAT platform with none of my softwares and hardwares (I have a lot) working on the new (forcing me again having to invest £10.000s in new)?
I would love to hear your veiws on the above!
G5 dual 2Gh   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

The Atari lasted as long as it did for one reason. It was probably the single, finest decision at Atari which enabled the machine to survive to a much greater extent than it ever should have. This was to build in midi connections.
Unfortunately, they didn't capitalise on this and suffered the consequences and that is the lesson for others to learn.
Macs are not dedicated music computers, I read another post in here where someone was complaining that the optical ins and outs on the new MacBook were not ADAT Lightpipe. The majority of normal everyday users have no idea what that is. Virtually everyone here does. What Apple need to learn from Atari is that it is the platform of choice for a lot of pro musicians, engineers, producers...... you name it. They don't need to give us things like built in A/D's because everyones opinions differ on what sounds good be it Motu, RME or whatever. It is the nature of sound engineers to argue over Mics and mic pre-amps etc, but they will all produce great sounding records.
Stability, ease of use and compatibility in the OS, with the hardware and with Logic is what I and a lot of other users want. I think Atari just got lucky with the midi ports. I am not disappointed with the features of 7.1 but I am with the stability and huge jump in processing power it seems to need over 6.
With the amazing iPod sales and mass acceptance of the consumer MP3 revolution it stands to reason that we are creating the music that ends up on these great products. The new songs that will populate the itunes music store this time next year are being recorded by artists all over the world right now. If Apple put as much effort into Logic as they do iPod then the app and the platform could easily see the same market share as the iPod is seeing from within it's own market.
No. Apple are not the new Atari.

To view it in an acceptable format, yes.  You can try using an opensource program such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice and see if it yields better results.  However, I'm sure if it would be compatible with a document made with word processing software from 9 years ago, but I would certainly give it a try.

No, there is not yet a way to do that. Albums created on the iPhone cannot be synced back to the mac.
You might try other ways to send photos back to the mac in a structured way, depending on your IOS version:
You could use Journals instead of albums. If you share a Journal, you can see it on your Mac.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3152

  • HT3235 MacBook Air is connected to an external monitor via Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter.  At one time it worked just fine, now when I plug the monitor into the Mac, the mac screen goes blue and nothing appears on the monitor.

This monitor works, on a PC.  Could the connector be bad or the port on the Mac Air?  Any ideas?

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode with the MacBook as the main screen. In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to use the MacBook’s keyboard and trackpad to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.
If you can’t see your MacBook screen because it’s broken or the backlight is off use the F7 key to switch between Extended Desktop and Mirror Display.
(From the MacBook User Guide: F7 (video mode toggle key) Switch between dual-display mode (extending the desktop across the built-in display and an external display) and video-mirroring mode (presenting the same information on both displays).

I would like my connection to be passed word
protected, WPA is best I presume.
    It is better than WEP.
WPA2 is better, but for virtually all home users WPA will protect your network.
    Will that work on
    both systems.
Yes on the Mac, and yes on the PC, if the PC's adapter supports WPA and you are using WIndows XP SP2.
How long will the pasword need to be?
Between eight and sixty-three characters long.
Do not use a real word, use a combination of letters and numbers something like:

I would also like to set up a link between the 2

  • I have my itunes account on two different computers pc and mac.  My pc has the majority of the media the mac is new and has very little.  I just purchased the app numbers for my ipad on my mac and when i go to sync my ipad it wants to erase all my other.

I have my itunes account on 2 different computers can I merge them?

Copy everything from the old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
Type "move itunes library from pc to mac" or similar into the google search bar.

  • I'm unable to download iMovie/iphoto, as i didn't buy the mac brand new, it only gives me the 'accept' button when i try to download, i don't mind purchasing, it just doesn't give me the option. any ideas how i can get around this?

I recently purchased a second hand new macbook air, although it was second hand to me the previous owner had never actually turned it on. So i went through all the set up steps when switching it on for the first time.
My problem is that iPhoto and iMovie are not installed, and when i go to the app store the icons have an accept button, it then prompts me for my apple ID, obviously these a registered to the original owner, and says i need that ID in order to download them, or i'll have to purchase them.
I'm happy to purchase them, but it doesn't give me that option, every time i search for them in the app store they always come up with the accept option and no purchase option.
Any idea how i can get round this would be great fully appreciated.

Something doesn't make sense here, though I'm not saying the previous owner is lying....
Time to send your serial # to iTS and let them see what's happening here.

  • Video on the mac, the answer is 42

    ee my previous post
Well the encoding with forthytwoplus finished, it took 1 hour and 9 minutes , not as good as my best time of 29 minutes on the pc.
    But:
the finished product is beutiful h.264 video, which blows everything else a way. I can't believe the quality, 23 fps at 250 mb. it looks as sharp as the purchased lost episodes.
If you own ipsp already the upgrade is only 10.00,
    http://ipsp.kaisakura.com
someone should tell these folks that progress bars shouldn't increment by 50, I paniced when it said estimated second pass 17 hours, than in 5 minutes it dropped to 20 minutes.
again 1 hour of video encoded to h.264 in 1 hour and 9 minutes, not great but acceptable.

When 42 scans the Video_TS file from the DVD that has multiple episodes on it, it only shows one Title, and a Chapter range of 1-7.
Actually the "Video_TS" is a folder. Be that as it may, it will likely depend how the disc was made. Some discs are divided into multiple tracks rather than a single one. Some of my older DVDs have multiple tracks each of which contains a single episode consisting of several chapters. On the other hand, most of the more recent discs seem to contain only a single track with each episode merely being a given set or group of sequential chapters.
I suspect the former will show up as multiple "titles," whereas the latter will show up as a single "title" with a very large number of chapters. As I am not an expert in these matters, I cannot really give you a definitive answer other than to say, think of a "title" as merely being logical divisions of the media program. In the former case these logical breaks coincide with physical breaks in file content (like the physical pages of a book). In the latter, these breaks may or may not fall on a physical division of some sort and are merely the program content between to arbitrary "markers" no matter how many physical pages they may cover.
Another way to think of a "title" might simply be to consider a title as a sequence of programming material which has a definite start or entry point and a definite end point which returns you to the menu. Most discs today give you the option of watching a single episode and returning to the menu, as well as, the option of viewing all of the episodes in order and returning to the menu after the last one. Each individual episode would likely show up as a separate title with the combined collection of episodes showing up as an additional title whose length was roughly equal to the sum of all the individual titles.
In either case, it should be easy in Forty-Two to select either a sub range of chapters on a "title" which represent a single episode or select all chapters for a given "title" if each title represents a single episode. Since a preview option is available in Forty-Two, it should be simple to determine under which scenario you will need to work for any particular DVD.
Hope this has not confused you. Best of luck...

  • I am new to the Mac and have a stupid Question

So I am not really this stupid but would love it if someone could tell me how to remove a program.
I downloaded some driver software in order to set me up onto the network printer at work. Along with that software came some sort of device locator for which I have no need nor patience. The file name is "com.brother.ControlCenter.plist" and the program name is "Brother Control Center Ver. 2.4.3"
I have deleted the file from the program list, I have changed the preferences of the program to try and disable it from launching at start up. I have drug it into the trash on the desk top and emptied the trash immediately after and through all of this my nemesis continues to launch at start up and then prompt me for a device choice.
Please tell me how to completely remove this program file.
    Thanks

EyeConnect says my Samsung 40D8000 'can access this computer' ... but how to I get the TV to access the Mac?
All I want to do is to have the new TV connect to iPhoto, and if possible, iTunes, on the Mac and although there are plenty of forums discussing problems (such as FF and RW not working) all I want to do is basically CONNECT!
The Samsung AllShare tool is not seeing the Mac, the Mac is 'seeing' the TV in the EyeConnect setting box (but not in Finder).

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • Any one have any idea when the next refresh of the Mac Mini will be?

Hey, guys!  I currently have a 1.87 Ghz Core Duo Mac Mini which I've done a few upgrades to.  RAM, Hard drive, etc., but OSX Lion requires a Core 2 Duo to be able to install it.  Therefore, I've been eyeing up the current Mini, but I was hoping that someone might have some information on when the next refresh if the Mini is expected. And sort of wondering if I should wait or just go ahead and get a current model.
    thanks in advance!
    Jeff

I understand, but consider that Apple is stepping up OS Major releases & look what get's left out of the next update, then what will be left out on the next update???
Macs that will support OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
As usual, the newer the Mac the better:
    • MacBook Pro – 13″ from mid 2009 or later, 15″ from late 2007 and newer, 17″ from late 2007 and newer
    • MacBook Air – late 2008 and newer
    • iMac – models from mid 2007 and newer
    • MacBook – 13″ aluminum from 2008, 13″ from 2009 and newer
    • Mac Mini – early 2009 and newer
    • Mac Pro – early 2008 models and newer
    • XServe – early 2009 models and newer
Macs that are NOT expected to support OS X Mountain Lion
Older Macs and those with weaker GPU’s will likely be left behind:
    • Anything with an Intel GMA 950 or x3100 integrated graphics card
    • Anything with an ATI Radeon X1600
    • MacBook models released prior to 2008
    • Mac Mini released prior to 2007
    • iMac models released prior to 2007
    • Original MacBook Air
This list of compatible and incompatible Macs and system requirements are based off of the first OS X Mountain Lion Developer Preview and may be subject to change, we will update when we learn more about the specifics. OS X Mountain Lion will be released this summer but presumably long before that we will know precise system requirements and what Macs are and are not supported by the new version of OS X. Stay tuned.

  • Is the Mac Mini right for me?

I've been fighting with my PC for years, and I am finally giving up. I'm looking forward to joining the Mac community. I want to buy a mac mini with the new Leopard OSX(10.5), however, I have some unique requirements:
    - I live on a boat in Avalon Harbor, Catalina Island, Southern California.
    - The natural choice for me would be a laptop computer.(Currently a Toshiba)
    - Power consumption is an important factor
    - I need a new TV, and I've acquired a KVH TracVision II satellite tracker to
    use with it.
    - I'm looking at a Vizio VX37L with the following specs:
    - Native Resolution: 1366 x 768 Format: 16 x 9
    - Input Formats: 1080i 720p HD 480p DVD 480i Normal TV
    - Inputs Supported: 1368x768 1024x768 800x600 720x400 640x480
    - Connections: HDMI w/HDCP
    - Inputs: Comb.NTSC/Ant/Cable/ATSC HDTV etc. 2xHDMI Stereo S-Video RGB
I have trouble with my eyesight, and a 37" monitor about 5' away might be a good solution, but not if it doesn't work as a package, and not if the resolution isn't HD-sharp. I've been reading on this forum of several difficulties experienced by mini users. This flies in the face of Apple's salesman, who says the mini is purposed to be monitored by a tv. Am I on the right track, or should I stick with the laptop?
Sure would appreciate your input to my dilemma
    Dave

I think the problem you have is not that the mini isn't capable of what you want it to do, and that if it works as expected that it will provide you a workable solution, but that some TVs are just not quite ready for prime time as computer displays, because as yet TV manufacturers are not widely adopting standards and designing their product for this kind of use.
As such, the question is whether the specific TV you are proposing will work well or not. Much depends on whether it signals the correct data to the mini or not. Some do, and many do not.
However, the salesman who claimed the mini is intended to be used with a TV is talking out of his hat. It is designed to be capable of it, and many have used them that way with great success, but if the salesman was right, Apple would hardly have decided to develop and market the Apple TV device, which is their 'official' way to connect an Apple product to a TV, and natively has most of the common range of connectors for the purpose, whereas the mini does not.
In most instances where a modern TV signals correctly to the Mac, the result is excellent, and where it does not, it can usually be configured to work well using one or other of the DisplayConfigX or SwitchResX utilities, but unless there is a user here with a mini and the same make and model of TV and who has reported, or can report, on the result, the only way you can be sure is to take try the combination.
In terms of whether the mini is the 'right' system for you - the answer is that it certainly draws relatively low power in the same overall range as equivalent laptops, and it is a very powerful system in its own right so unless you were into something like professional video or image editing, it's not likely to disappoint. As such, and assuming you are desirous of moving to MacOS and away from Windows, in my view perhaps the best way to approach this is to get the mini, and then take it to your local TV retailer and set it up with the TV of your choice and see if it works correctly. If it does, the problem is solved, and if not, either try a different TV or start playing with one or other of the aforementioned display utilities.
Of course don't forget that with any Intel Mac, including the mini, you can always switch back to Windows using BootCamp (and a copy of Windows of course) if you get homesick!

  • Updated to PS 2014 for the CC updater in the top menu bar on the Mac,  or so I thought but even after restarting I still have older version, despite "about" saying there are no updates.  Any ideas?

In the Mac, the updater icon told me there were many updates.  I had them all install and they did, supposedly successfully.  However, after I opened PS, it's still the old version and if I go to Help and click updates, it says I have the lastest version, yet it's still 14.2  What's going on?  Thanks.

    This may help ...
I had the CC Desktop App tell me there were new versions available and got both Indesign (CC 2014) and Photoshop (CC 2014).  Went to start Indesign and got an error: 1. Suggesting I uninstall and then reinstall.  The uninstaller in the app folder had lost its alias link to the original uninstall file so I had to manually find it and un-install.  Then re-did installation using the CC Desktop app, and now its starting.  So I am doing the same with Photoshop now and have tried starting Indesign and it is now working ... So Id suggest check your application folder and look for a folder "Adobe Photoshop CC 2014" and if its not there then you may well have just updated the existing CC application.  The 2014 is a totally new install ...
