is the macbook pro 13 (2011 model) really worth it? i originally bought the white one as of my needs and the spec for the price. but i had problems with it so took it back and got another one and then that one went back as of the same issue, apple kindly upgraded me to a macbook pro 13 free of charge but i cant stop thinking is it worth it over the macbook pro 15? the only thing that bothers me is the graphics card i just feel its a lot of money for what it is, i don't really fancy spending an extra £400-£500 on a pro 15, but need to be sure i got the right thing and not wasted my money
A friend of mine needed his Windows computer fixed the other day, he's a rather famous musician but hasn't got a clue in the world about computers but he ran out and got a Windows 7 machine and got sucked in, despite having tons of money in the bank to buy the very best Mac, which I highly recommended he get. Guess he remembers too much when he was poor.
Anyway we had a great party that night, which he did spend a lot of money for, after I spent two days fixing his machine, saving his data and getting it married to his achient device that records his music from all his devices onto a hard drive, which I haven't got a clue what it is as I'm not into creating music.
So anyway we got to talking about all his various road trips when he was on tour before he was somebody and has to hide now, body guards around, saying he really can't be himself anymore and that's he's depressed and all this and that.
So I suggested he go incognito to places where people don't know him or his music. (or his attitude) So out we go and rent this average car, and go buy some average clothes at Walmart and cruise some average bars, he changed his appearance from a rock star image and all that. Well we had a few drinks and had so much fun he started buying rounds for everyone, next thing we knew we were at this large house party near some college and he was buying all the booze.
Everyone was asking me who this guy was, because they were all young and didn't know this guy from his face, and I just said he won a few grand in the lottery and wanted to blow it all in one night.
So like two days later the guy is totally cured, he's jumping around all happy like, doens't even want to bother with computers and talking with people online anymore like he was.
Anyway we got another trip lined up, don't know exactly what yet, kind of making it a point to go and do something at least once a month or every few weeks,, something erractic and impulsive, just to get the heck away from everything and try something new. So he's away from the "******* machine" he now calls it, because he unfortunately has to use it still.
So I get to party with a rock star as long as I play decoy. Cool gig huh? -
Is it worth replacing the MacBook Pro with an iPad Air?
I've been sat in the realms of contemplation for some time now. Since the release of the iPad Air it looks as though it is now possibly a viable option for me to replace my aging MacBook Pro. I essentially only use my laptop for photographs and music. My photo collection is about 11GB in size when they are in their original format outside of iPhoto. (iPhoto bloats it up to 33GB). My music collection is miniscule and we're talking only about 2GB in size, as it's only stuff I have purchased from the iTunes Store, so I know I can listen to this whenever I want to by re-downloading specific albums or tracks with "Purchases in the Cloud." At the moment I think the Macbook Pro is more than I actually need for what I use it for. Things like document creation etc. isn't an issue for me as I've used pages previously on my laptop and my documents are iCloud synced.
For me, I'd be looking at 64GB or 128GB capacity, as I use a Sony NEX-6 DSLR so the files as JPEG are large. I'm not one to keep every single photo I have taken, I'm kind of "minimalist" so out of say 400 photos I'd only keep 100 of the best ones.
I have read that some people have used services such as Dropbox for additional cloud storage, but I'm looking at using a networked hard drive that supports iOS so I can back up my photos to a physical drive at home should anything detrimental happen to the iPad (if I did get one).
I'm curious to hear if anyone has gone down the route of replacing their laptop or even desktop with a high-capacity iPad, and hear how they've got on with it. This is becoming a more frequently asked question after researching the vast spaces of the Internet, but there are no answers specific for my needs!
Message was edited by: C.Moore - Spelling & grammar corrections.An iPad is a great device, but it's no computer replacement. It lacks the file sharing/structure that comptuers have and the ability to easily get files onto/off it without the internet.
That said, if you still have your desktop and use it for most of the computing work and basically just want a photo viewer, check your e-mail device, then it may work for you.
The networked harddrive will be the hard part. Since the iPad lacks a file manager anything you use on it must have an app so that you can access it. And that app also must be allowed to 'send' your files to another app. So that may be what you really need to research. The ability and ease of using a network drive to do the file sharing you want. -
I am thinking of getting my first Macbook pro for uni and was just wondering which one would be the best? The macbook pro or macbook pro with retina display? or even wait for the new release in 2013 ?
If your budget is unlimited, look at both the retina and non-retina and make a decision based on your preferences. If funds are tight, explore the options in the refurbished section. Unless you are dealing with courses that demand specific performance parameters, any one of these options will suffice.

That is a question only Apple can answer and the purchaser must decide if the price is worth it. Apples pricing for upgrades in the past has often been such that third party RAM and HHDs/SSDs were less expensive. However those options are no longer available with the retina MBPs.

You can but make sure you upgrade your RAM to 16GB - you can't do that through Apple...
Autodesk is a memory intensive program and the same goes with 3D Studio Max.....
Another suggeston if you must use a 13 inch is to buy the base 13 inch Macbook Pro and upgrade the RAM to 16GB and install a SSD to make it perform fast.
Another option is to get a refurbished 15 Inch Macbook Pro and do the RAM upgrade yourself...Advantage going 15 Inch is because it has it's own discrete graphics adapter rather than the built in Intel video. -

It depends when it was manufactured - if you should choose to buy a refurbished unit from Apple , it may still have Snow Leopard (but you would of course qualify for a free upgrade to Lion) or, it would also be possible to buy a new one from a reseller with Snow Leopard if he had the MBP for a while, so it would be adviseable to ask.

I am asking this because I want the G-Tech Hard drive says that it is designed for the macbook pro. Yet, I want to back up faster with by using my firewire 400 which is not an option on the one designed for the white macbook that does not have a firewire (only a USB port.) The G-Tech Hard drive comes with the 800 to 400 compatible cable and has 5400 RPM with 750 GB. Also, I've heard that laptops with low battery (mine all the time) won't have the power for a bus powered Hard drive (as in no ac plug in adaptor.) Can I just plug in my laptop? Any one know the answers from experience with this hard drive?
As far as I know, if a harddrive works with a Macpro, it should work with the Macbook: if your Macbook is low on power, plug in the AC adapter
If your Macbook has a firewire port, then it should be fine. BUt i would do somemore research first. -
What the Macbook Pro should have
Hi guys, 2 weeks ago I purchased my first Apple laptop - the Macbook Pro 13", before that (and still sometimes) I used PC. Even though the design is great, there are things that could be done to make it perfect. Here is my list, please tell me what you think about it.
1 - A delete button one the keyboard, I noticed that the Macbook Pro doesn't have one before purchasing it, but after using if for 2 weeks noticed how important it is.
2 - The 2 USB ports are quite inconvenient because they are next to each other, it would be more convenient if they are from both sides instead, like Macbook Air. I have devises that are a bit wider than the other ones, so when one of these is plugged in, the other USB port is unusable. Speaking of which USB 2.0 isn't good! The ThunderBolt port is great but there are no devises yet that can take any advantage of it, so in the meantime USB 3.0 would be great.
3 - HDMI port - most of the laptops already have it, I don't see why none of the Macbooks has it. If I want to connect my Macbook Pro to my TV, I have to spend extra money on MiniDisplay to HDMI adaptor (it's not like Apple products are any cheep, so spending extra money on things that should have been there on first place is NOT good).
4 - Numerical Keyboard - I know there is no room for it, but a button like Caps Lock could be used, when it's pressed certain buttons from the keyboard could act only as numerical keyboard and when pressed again, the keyboard could be back to normal.
5 - The screen resolution of the 13" Macbook Pro should have been like the 13" Macbook Air.
6 - The CD Drive is unnecessary, nobody uses it nowadays. Nobody listens to music from a CD and nobody installs any software from a CD, everyone uses the Internet for these things, the little part of people who are still using CDs, DVDs, etc. have other devises such as: DVD or Blue-ray players, HiFi systems and Desktops. The room that is taken by the Optical Disk could be used for a bigger battery.
7 - Better cooling system - when watching a move the laptop gets so hot that I literally can't put it on my lap (lol what a paradox, a laptop that cannot be put on a lap), also I would love to be able to close the lid and leave the laptop works (it is great when downloading big files or scanning software is used), but with that cooling system I'm afraid that it would overheat.
8 - Last but not least - The screen bezel. It's too big, Macbooks should be bezelless, it would make them much better looking.DS had some great points, I'll chime in as well.
1.) I agree, it'd be handy to have. It definitely took some getting use to but once you do and modify your keyboard workflow it becomes second nature.
2.) I ended up investing a USB extension cable, Apple makes them I believe. At least they use to, I've had mine for years. While the cable dangling off the side of the machine is a bit of an annoyance, it's a necessity if I want to double up my AirCard (USB) with a thumb drive. USB 2.0 is still the "standard" and as such it's going to be the de facto peripheral port. Apple is historically slow about adopting non-standard peripheral interfaces unless they pioneer or champion it. It wouldn't surprise me if Apple still doesn't offer USB 3.0 this time next year. Thunderbolt/Light Peak is brand new tech, and as such it's going to take a while to have peripherals that support it. There are NAS devices that have it, they were just announced this week.

3.) I agree that HDMI would be nice but with Thunderbolt supporting HDMI, I really don't see Apple adding another video out port. There's no room left on the I/O strip on the 13" MBP for it. Apple use to include adapters (when the MBP first came out) but they've since stopped doing that and gouge with adapters. Thankfully there are numerous 3rd party offerings at a fraction of the price.
4.) I agree, I forget which "redesign" of the keyboard layout got rid of the Num Lock key. I know my 15" MBP (Santa Rosa) has it. I currently use my iPhone as my numerical keyboard, there's a great little app that pairs the phone to your computer via Bluetooth. It works great as an alternative.
5.) Marketing 101. By introducing it via a future revision this encourages current owners to want to upgrade/switch and thus move more units and tout it as a "feature upgrade." I was pretty shocked the i5/i7 update to the MBP 13" did not introduce the 1440 resolution.
6.) This is where you'll get disagreement. Rule #1 of proper Internet forum posting, don't use words like: everyone, everyone, most, all, nobody, no one, etc. Especially without evidence to back it up. While you don't use it, people do. I use mine daily, my co-workers use their drives daily. That's 11 people right there, which is 11 more than "nobody."
7.) Apple has never called their computer a "laptop." They've always referred to is as a portable computer. Matter of fact, they strongly discourage the use of their portable computers on your lap due to how the heat dissipation process works through the top case. So the problem(s) you're experiencing are to be expected, you're using the machine in a method that is not recommended by the manufacturer. They even discuss that in the "Getting Started" booklet that came with your machine. -
I got the MacBook Pro i7 15 inch with SSD and I am sorry . . .
it took them this long to come out with it and glad they did. My workflow is extremely fast and efficient. While using Photoshop and Lightroom and files around 74mb's each, my computer barely gets warm, loads these large image files in about 1 to 2 seconds and can do other things at the same time. If I have technical questions I call the help line and get a call back in 30 seconds.
Run time while working these files is a few hours on battery and I didn't expect more. So far I am a happy camper. I got 4gb's of RAM because after reading about the SSD and response, I felt I could get more later and cheaper, if needed. I am not sure what more RAM will do in my case as the load time with ALL functions in my image workflow are loaded in a blink of an eye, or faster but it is easy to do if needed. I also got the nonglare high definition screen and can really notice the difference coming form my G4 that is 5 years old.
No beach balls but one thing I haven't been able to get working is the TEchTool Deluxe. Since it downloads per advice of Apple I thought it was part of their system but it isn't so they aren't too much help, though they try.
The woofer system of the MacBook Pro is silly and not a subwoofer at all but other than that and the fact that one should really use external speakers for real sound, I am having a good time with this comptuter.. . do that, have a leading line that is a beginning of a sentence.
I am enjoying this new computer and so far, it is living up to what they say it can do but it is actually faster than what I expected. I had read by some other where I post on image processing, that it still wasn't as fast as they would like so I am not sure what they are after. When I have an image of 74mb's that fully loads and is ready to work on in photoshop or Lightroom in 2 seconds or so, I can't complain at all. I also find that firewire 800 works like is is supposed to not as it did on my older Powerbook G4 that treated it more like 400 though it was supposed to be 800. -
Using a remote desktop connection with the Macbook pro.
I use the remote desktop connection on the Macbook pro and am unable to exchange info between the mac and the remote connetion windows. For example, if I am writing an email from the remote connection and want to attach a document, photo etc. that I created on the Mac, it just doesn't work. It seems like the Mac and the desktop connection are completely seperated eventhough they are both on the screen in front of me. the systems I use for work are not Apple compatible and will not work on anything other than windows explorer and in my case the remote desk top connection. Any ideas!

I have had some difficulty getting my InFocus projector to consistently work correctly with my MacBook Pro. Is there a key on the MacBook Pro that toggles the options for projector display? There was one on my last MacBook and my previous PowerBook.

Dudley WarnerNo, there is no longer a key to control external display modes (it's F7 on my 1st gen MBP, but the option was removed along with the embedded numeric keypad in the Early 2008 models). There's not a substitute keyboard shortcut (with the exception of installing a macro player like Keyboard Maestro). Your main option is System Preferences > Displays (as stated, ticking the box to show Displays in the menu bar provides a helpful shortcut).

I am trying to use an external 3g modem made by Huawei model e173s-6 and when I do connect it on my usb port the macbook pro just do not recognize it. I own a 2012 model with mountain lion 10.8.2 . What should I do ?
I still don't know what happened to my test Aperture Library after the update to 3.4...Not only were my previews lost, but so were the original images! Needless to say, I haven't bothered to update the main library on the Mac Pro because I don't want to deal with this level of uncertainty (even with backups in place).

Is there an issue with the hitachi hard drives in the MacBook Pro's ? Got a 15 inch and a 13 inch at the same time and both drives have failed in under two years. I have heard from a few other people with same issue. Other drive I have had have lasted at least 5 or more years.
there is a dylib you can put in the springboard if jailbroken but if not you have to find an apple store
