Is the mini displayport high definition?

I have a Mac Pro with Ati Radeon HD 5770 and just got the Apple 27" Cinema Display and one thing I can't find the answer to is - is the mini display port serving the high definition?

Yes.  The 27" Thunderbolt display won't work with Mini DisplayPort but the 27" Mini DisplayPort version will.

  • I bought the mini displayport to hdmi adapter with the cable

(the ethernet high speed one that connects to the mini displayport) to connect to my sony bravia...and all I see is the Apple purple sky....why won't it work?

What are you expecting to see? The same images you see on the notebook screen or something different?
Sounds like you have the external screen set to act as a secondary screen (extend the desktop), but want it to mirror the main screen. You can control that in System Preferences > Displays.

  • Could my current mac with the Mini DisplayPort use thunderbolt displays? Even any other thunderbolt technology?

It will work, but only as a display – obviously you will not have access to the hub and daisychain functions.
I don't see that would work... Plus, if it were possible, I would think a company would utilize that for marketing leverage to appeal to more users with only the older mDP cpu's.  In this case, that's not what is happening.  So I don't believe it will work like that.  Typically, a company wouldn't make specific statements (ex "attaching to any Thunderbolt enabled device"), if it was Not a requirement to work.
Then... on the technical side of it...
The TB cable / signal is a (new technology) Muxed signal of both PCIe and DP data.  Without the TB chipset / hardware on the host machine, it can Not communicate properly down the Thunderbolt cable and to any TB device.
As you can see in the cable cut-away... it's NOT just a matter of adding individual DP lines along with some individual PCIe lines and wrap it up in a single cable.... where you can choose just to use only the DP lines.  Nope... this is highly improbable and suggests that using an OLD (non-TB) computer will NOT work at ALL, if connecting to a TB display or any TB device.

  • Does Thunderbolt work with the Mini Displayport to DVI adapter?

I just ordered a new 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display to replace my Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro.  I've been using the Mini Displayport to DVI adapter to extend my screen to an older 20" Cinema Display.  From what I can find online, and I'm here asking for confirmation, I should still be able to use the Mini Displayport to DVI adapter with the new MacBook Pro's Thunderbolt port.  Correct?

still be able to use the Mini Displayport to DVI adapter with the new MacBook Pro's Thunderbolt port.  Correct?
    Yes.

  • Can the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter for a 2011 Mac Mini be used with Windows 7?

This question concerns the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter described at the below link:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A
When running Windows 7 via Boot Camp on a 2011 Mac Mini, can the above adapter be used with a VGA monitor?

Thank you for the confirmation, Mr. Peck.

  • Does the "Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter" work with all Samsung tv models?

Does the "Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter" work with all Samsung tv models?

It's a VGA adapter. Nothing special about that. If your Samsung monitor supports VGA then it will work.
But why not go completely digital and use a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to skip the analog conversion? It also supports passing audio over HDMI.

  • New Mac Book Shuts Down when I plug in the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter

I have a new 15" MacBook pro and every time I plug in the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter, it shuts down. I installed the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Firmware Update (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl799) and it still shuts down. It shuts down whether I have a display/projector plugged in or not.
    Any suggestions???

Try turning the MBP off before you connect or disconnect an external monitor. I could be wrong but I do not believe that the DVI interface was designed to be a hot swap interface.

  • TS3232 I have the mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter firmware 1.03 and I still have screen flickering issues

I have the mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter firmware 1.03 and I still have massive screen flickering issues on a Mac Mini 2012.
I am using a Dell 30" monitor (it's the Samsung screen just rebranded) connected to a WD 4TB Thunderbolt drive connected to the Mac Mini.
The screen is usable for the most part when I've just started the computer (although today I started having issues after a fresh restart) but if even just the screen goes to sleep, or the computer goes to sleep and I wake it later, I start to have massive flickering to black and occasionally to snow.
The effect seems to be more likely to arise when I'm on heavy graphics-intensive websites or programs (eg, Tumblr feed with lots of GIF images or working in Adobe Premiere), but once it starts shutting down those programs has no effect, the screen keeps flickering wildly.
The problem improved after the 1.03 firmware upgrade (for a while it was flickering uncontrollably ALL the time and was virtually unusable) but it has not gone away.
Any suggestions would be very welcome, either for how to fix this issue or how to get Apple to, you know, let me TELL THEM that their adapter firmware fix has NOT solved the issue, since my phone support has expired. :/

I have a new Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter to allow my original Apple 30" Cinema Display to connect to the new Mac Pro.  Shipped straight from Apple, it is firmware version 1.03.  I've never had flickering issues, but the display will often go black (possibly after a screen power save) and not come back.  when this happens I am still able to connect to and use the Mac via remote connection.  But the only way to get the screen back is either to unplug the adapter and plug it back in to the Mac, or to shut down and power up the Mac.  This may be a separate issue, so I'll also post it standalone...

  • Does the mini displayport able to transfer audio and video to an external monitor (example: a tv) using a 2011 13" MacBook Pro with an hdmi cable?

I was wondering this, because I want to hook up my 2011 MacBook Pro to a external monitor (TV) using an hdmi cable.  This would be heplful before I buy a mini displayport to hdmi adapter, and then maybe find out that the mini displayport might not transfer audio, only video.

Yes, min Displayport supports audio and video for the 2011 MBP 13" via HDMI.

  • Can i use the HDMI port and the Mini displayport to HDMI adapter simultaneously to switch between two displays?

I just bought a new Mac Mini and was hoping that i can connect my TV via the HDMI port and also connect a 19" monitor via the Minidispaly port to HDMI adapter or the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. This way i can pick between having the screen mirrored to my tv, or having the screen displayed at my desk.
    Is this possible?

Yes. Note the resolution via HDM is limited to
This model simultaneously supports 1920x1200 on an HDMI or a DVI display (using the included HDMI-to-DVI adapter) and2560x1600 on a Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort display or even a VGA display (with an optional Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter, which is compatible with the Thunderbolt port).

  • Can a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter do the same job as the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter?

Can a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter do the same job as the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter?  Meaning, can I connect a DVI screen less than 30 inches?  Why would I buy the expensive product?  Simply because I might have to sometimes work with a small screen, sometimes with a big, and it would save me the trouble and money of buying both.  If the answer is yes, do I have to constantly plug it in USB, even on a smaller screen?

    Hi p,
Can a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter do the same job as the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter?
    Yes.
Meaning, can I connect a DVI screen less than 30 inches?
    Yes.
Why would I buy the expensive product?
Don't know which products you're looking at, so can't say.
Simply because I might have to sometimes work with a small screen, sometimes with a big, and it would save me the trouble and money of buying both.  If the answer is yes, do I have to constantly plug it in USB, even on a smaller screen?
A dual link is supposed to handle any single link signal, it just has twice the bandwidth.

  • Will the old 23" ACD work with the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapte

Will the old 23" ACD work with the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter and the new MacBook Pro?
Apple Store says it is for the 30" only.
    Thanks ... Ken

I'm not so sure about that. I'd say the jury's still out until someone gets one and tries to use it single-link.

  • Using the mini displayport to HDMI on W530

I have read thru the similar threads regarding using the mini displayport on the W530 and seem to get some conflicting info.
I bought an mini display port to HDMI adapter and am trying to connect it to my Samsung monitor and it does not work, no signal is detected in either extend or duplicate mode.
What BIOS settings do I need to set (mine are currently at the default) and what drivers if any do I need to update to make this work?
When using the vga adapter port with the same monitor it works with no additional changes.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    One more thing...
It is recommended to use a single straight-through cable with the proper connector at each end (i.e. miniDP->HDMI), rather than use a 2-part arrangement with a short miniDP->HDMI adapter, along with a normal HDMI-to-HDMI cable.  Sometimes the adapter used is the source of the problem, and the externally HDMI-connected monitor is just not seen correctly at the right time for the HDMI handshake that is required.  Hence the symptom.
I'd at least try a plain straight miniDP->HDMI cable, instead of using an adapter+cable.  It's only a few dollars.

  • Connecting my MacBook Pro (early 2011) to my Sony LCD TV (KDL-46XBR6) via the Mini DisplayPort and listening to Multichannel surround sound.

    Dear all,
I am attempting to connect my MacBook Pro (early 2011) to my Sony LCD TV (KDL-46XBR6) via the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI. I have successfully connected the two devices and can select "SONY TV XV" in the sound preference pane. I can see and hear what I'd like, however, I can only monitor the sound in 2 channel stereo. I have my TV connected to a Sony 7.1 audio receiver via an optical cable and can monitor 7.1 sound via other sources (Blu-ray, broadcast, etc). When I go into the Audio Midi Setup utility, I am unable to configure my speakers to be anything but 2 channel stereo. I am given the options for "2ch-16bit", "2ch-20bit", "2ch-24bit" and "Encoded Digital Audio". When I select "Encoded Digital Audio", my output automatically changes to Built-in Output. Has anyone been able to successfully resolve this issue? Thanks for all your help!
    Gregg

I have tested it with the Moshi (http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/moshi-mini-dp-to-hdmi-adapter-with-a udio-support) and Belkin (http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA342ZM/A/belkin-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-adap ter) adapters, both purchased from the Apple Store with no such luck. Have you or anyone else had success with any other third-party adapters?
