Is the Mini for me?

Currently I have a decent PC in my room, and my family PC is good for gaming, which is in the other room. Right now, im interested in paying monthly for a computer for $1,500 at most. The cheapest Mac ive seen is the Mac Mini with the intel core duo.
-120 GB HDD
-2 GB RAM
-Wireless mouse and keyboard
Now, Im really into music and I am very passionate about media. My PC just can play DVD's right, and it does pictures and videos okay. My only worry for the Mac is that is will be outdated very soon.
How long would an Intel Duo Mac Mini with 2 gigs of RAM, and a 120 gig HDD last me? And im really getting sick of the glitches and bugs in XP, how perfect and smooth is OSX?
Mac Mini (not bought yet)

True.... but one thing u have to keep in mind about Apple is the fact that after their last OS update, they forget about you. Look at 10.3.9 , 10.2.9 and so on.
Every year they come out with new OS's and they force you to pay around 150 dollars to purchase the new OS. Keep in mind how long WindowsXP has been around.... And even now after years and years since XP's release Microsoft continued to update and support previous OS's. And just a few weeks ago MS announced that they will be cutting support on ME and Windows 2000.
No i used to own an iBook G3 800Mhz with 10.3, and was not so happy with it, since programs including Safari crashed on me almost everyday. And once the entire OS froze on me and i had to remove the battery inorder to reboot the OS.
Now i was not very fond of apple (besides my iPod Shuffle) until they announced the Intel Chip and the ability to run Windows on the Mac. Now i am all ears.
I really like the Mac mini, but im staying away from it because of heat issues (the heat is also present in the iMac and MacBook Pro) and the fact that i would have liked to see the X1600 graphic card in the Mac mini. Sure that would require alittle more space, but i wouldnt mind if the Mac Mini was one inch taller than it is now to have the X1600 included in it.
And as for the iMac, i find it not so visually appealing, it has a huge ugly space at the bottom of the screen, and their is no height adjustment for the screen. And the 17" has very bad viewing angles compared to the 20".
Then theres the MacBook Pro, which is very nice.... only very bad HEAT issues!
I look forward to seeing the iBook Pro, but i have heard that Asus will be helping Apple manufacture it, and im alittle if'y about that. And i have heard that it will be Intel Core SOLO and NOT Duo, with very on-board graphics. So imagine a portable version of the very basic Mac Mini.
But finally OS 10.5 will be officially introduce in August of this year, and will come preinstalled with the 2nd generation Intel inside Mac's, which will hopefully have fixed all the issues that are in the 1st gen (such as heat) and hopefully better graphics in the Mac Mini.

  • HT4623 My new iPad mini won't install the update 7.0.6 until it has finished restoring from the iCloud backup.  What do I do to make the restoration complete? I have been using the mini for about a month.

I have downloaded iOS 7.0.6 but it will not install until the ipad is finished restoring from the Icloud backup.  I've been using the mini for about a month, so why is it not completely restored?  How do I make the restore process finish?

When and where was the iPad/charger purchased? It's covered by a 1-year warranty.
The problem may be the USB cable.

  • HT4623 I'm new to using apple products, recently was asked to consider using a ipad mini for my specific business needs. Does anyone use the mini for their business?  How does it work for you?

I'm new to using the apple OS.  Recently had business partner buy an ipad mini, was thinking of buying more for our businesses.  I'm used to using Windows Office products for my reports, wanted to know how apple's Pages, Keynote and Numbers compared and whether they could be used on the ipad mini.

  • What is the best way to leave the mini for the night?

What is the best way to switch off the ipod mini when I have finished with it?
My usual way to finish is to press the pause button then press the hold button. Is this safe?
I have heard that holding the pause/play button does a similar thing.
    Any input is greatfully received.
    Thanks.

I do the same thing. Press and hold pause until it sleeps and then switch hold on so I don't wake it up by accident. If you gasp don't use it for a couple of days it will go into deep sleep, and when you wake it up it will show the apple symbol... I think it is essentially rebooting.
I'm pretty sure the iPod normally just goes to sleep, rather than shuts down. This uses a little more power, but makes it faster when you go to use it (rather than waiting for it to boot up... like when you leave it for a few days). I think it's a reasonable compromise... give up a little battery life for that instant sweet tune gratification! And if you don't use it... it shuts down to preserve your battery. Smart pod!
Anyway, don't worry about it, what you are doing is perfectly safe for your iPod.

  • Is the Mini more powerful than the 21.5" i5 iMac?

In need of a new home desktop for the family, media, projects, etc.  I have been doing a lot of research on the i7 Mac Mini and the 2.7Ghz 21.5" iMac.  All of the numbers actually suggest that the Mini is more powerful.  Does anyone have any further numbers or anecdotal info that suggests otherwise.  I don't want to necessarily search for a reason to spend more money but want to get the best future proofed machine while spending no more than $1400.

The only issue with the integrated graphics is if are
going to do things like advanced video editing, complex
3D development work, or heavy duty gaming.  For use as
a general purpose computer or home theater computer
it will perform quite well.  It will also work quite well for
any type of application that does any heavy duty number
    crunching.
So, if gaming is a concern, just Google HD4000 and gaming
and what sort of performance is seen and what sort of level
of gaming you could expect to see.
As a music/video entertainment center, go with the Mini for
sure.   Personally, I am using an old 2010 Mini for that purpose
and it handles any 1080p HD content I throw at it.  So the new
ones should be more than adequate.

  • Can the progressive signal from the mini be coverted to interlaced?

Is there any way to make the video output from the Mac mini interlaced, because my HDTV will only accept 1080i?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, the mini for sure can output interlace. I have done this over an S-Video connection. What I am less sure of is whether it can also output interlaced video via DVI or VGA. In theory, there is no reason it shouldn't be able to. In other words, both those standards support interlace.
Programs like DisplayConfigX and SwitchRes X give you access to an interlace setting, but I have not ever had any need to try to use it over a DVI connection, so I can't tell you if it will perform the desired trick or not if that bit is set.

  • Can the Mini be saved, post-Pepsi Syndrome?

I have a Mini my friend gave me to attempt to save that her idiot roommate spilled a can of knockoff generic cola onto, she said it worked incrementally worse and then stopped working at all gradually, which is a bad sign IMO. However the morons at the local non-Apple repair shop quoted her an arm and a leg to save it, which is ridiculous when she only got the Mini for $500. Chalk it up to Windoze/PC idiocy I suppose...well, I have taken the lid off it and it seems the CD drive is unscathed but the back and the side with the RAM slots looks good and sticky, just like someone spilled generic no-name cola across the top. Can I save this somehow, and if so, with what?

Almost certainly the logic board would have taken the worst of the spill, as you say it's at the bottom of the casing and that's where the soda would tend to pool until it began to dry. That isn't to say it will have killed it, but sadly the chances are high that it will have done so - or at least have caused sufficient damage that it would not function correctly. However, at the cost of these things, and if it were me (aside from demanding the roommate pay for replacement) I would probably give it a go, despite the amount of time.
It's difficult to know if anything would be salvageable otherwise - probably the hard drive because that's sealed, but even then it'll require careful cleaning - and it would be imperative to keep the cleaning solution away from the edges of the top plate or any vent in the drive casing. The optical drive may be OK, but if any soda got inside it, more than likely it will be too hard to fix. Memory may likewise be OK, but will need careful cleaning.
The worst aspect of this - aside from the spill in the first place of course - is that to stand any hope of recovering the system, or even any parts from it, entails a lot of time and careful effort, with no great hope of actually succeeding. Whether you want to give it a try depends on all the circumstances of course, which only you know in this instance, but as I said, at the cost of a new one, I would be inclined to give it a go.
As far as the time it takes to answer - well bearing in mind you posted late evening (EDT) the views you got were more likely from others looking for help than anyone around looking to help someone. Just a bad time of day for the regulars who are predominantly spread around Europe (middle of the night at that point) and Eastern and Central US. On top of that, while your question was a pretty short one, as you can see from the answers you've had today (and leaving aside the snotty bits about attitude of course) the replies you needed were actually quite complex - at least time consuming to compose given any real attempt to assist you. It's not that any of us don't understand the sense of urgency when an issue hits and the user feels the need for answers as fast as possible, but even then there are perhaps better ways of displaying that urgency! Anyway, it's done and you can't go back and change the post you made, so in a broader sense, speaking for myself, I'd be inclined to expect replies after 30-60 minutes during the day on a weekday in US time, but to perhaps expect a longer period to elapse earlier or later in the day or at weekends. Of course that's an appallingly general guide, but bearing in mind that most posters are here looking for help, the number of views rarely indicated the number of possible helpers who have read a question.

  • Not enough space on mini for playlists

ITunes says there is not enough space on the mini for my playlists so it creates it's own selection and makes it's own playlist. Why can't I just copy a few playlists that fit on the mini instead of what it's doing? Can anyone help?

I was indeed. Went into the settings and had it only copy the playlists, not the library itself. Thanks for helping Peter...

  • Recently I bought a mini DVI to HDMI converter  from eBay for my iMac 21.5 Mid 2011, but only later I realised that it does not have the mini DVI port in that. How can I connect my iMac to a LG smart TV through a HDMI cable?

This is the picture of all the ports from my iMac
This is the mini DVI to HDMI converter which I bought from ebay. And I have the HDMI cable to connect it to my TV
Could anyone please suggest me a solution how I could connect my iMac to the LG smart TV? Also I need to know if this transmits the audio as well to the smart TV?
Suggestions are welcomed. I really appreciate and thank you for your time

I would suggest looking into a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector. In this case, you may be able to use the TV as an external monitor. For this option, please confirm through additional research. I have not tested it personally.
You can also use an Apple TV, which connects with HDMI. In this case, you can use Airplay Mirroring. Not all Macs support Airplay Mirroring, so you need to check first. I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac, and it supports Airplay Mirroring. I don't use it often because my TV is in another room, but I just tried it and it worked. It had to change the screen resolution to work well, so I don't know if I would want to use it as my day to day monitor. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404

  • I already have an ipad2 and I'm interested in buying an iPad mini. Will I have to purchase all the apps I have on my ipad2 again if I want to use them on the mini ,or, will I simply be able to use them on both machines for no extra charge?

I already have an ipad2. If I buy an iPad mini will I be able to download the apps I have already bought on to it and use them on both machines?

If you connect the new mini with the same AppleID you have on the iPad and you used to buy the Apps you will be able to download them again for free.
You can even let your iTunes do all the work for you. Sync your iPad with iTunes and make a backup.  Give to the new mini a different name and the first time you will connect it to iTunes yiou will be asked if you wish to setup it as a new item or use the backup of the iPad.

  • Apple ID for my 9 year old - How can I set up an ID for my 9 years old. We have bought him an ITouch for his birthday, he also has a $30 iTunes card. To load up the iTunes card he needs an ID. When I try to set him up it says he is below the min age.

How can I set up anApple ID for my 9 years old. Every time I try it tells me he is bolew the min age. If this is the case how can he download free games and how can he redeem his birthday $30 iTunes card? I dont want him to use my ID as it has my credit card details.
I'm very fustrated with this as it seems the Apple kit is for 13 years and older only.
    Cheers
    Brad

That's great your 9-yr-old is responsible enough to handle an iTouch!
There's no way around the age limit. I suggest a family account that you, an adult, control.
