Is the N900 going to have various keyboard layouts...

Hi on one of the forums which i moderate, many people have been asking about the keyboard layouts of the Nokia N900.
Currenlty the pictures and info we found suggests there is only going to be the normal "qwerty" layout.
But what about france with their "azerty"? Or Hungary with "qwertz" and áéőú letters?
As a person, who uses mobile internet a lot on i'd find these layouts rather useful and i'm sure, there are many others like me out there.
So is nokia planning to release the phone in the countries mentioned above with their own layouts? Or are we all going to get the normal "qwety" model?

I believe it does.. I saw a post on talk.maemo.org (official Maemo forum) of a french user who was ordering from the UK to get a phone without a AZERTY french keyboard because he wanted a QWERTY one..
There are a number of country varients, though apparently only the layout differs..
Some suck..
I'm not sure which, but some languages make use of extra keys for extra symbols so "up" and "down" are now FN+left and FN+Right!!
No dedicated up and down buttons..
I think I'm going to be sick.. I really feel for them.. and I'm quiet happy to be a qwerty ascii user

Key "N" working as N+ALT when i have multiple keyboard layouts

When I have only default EN keyboard layout installed, everything is fine, but when i add any additional layout (in my case Hungarian or/and Serbian) the key "N" starts to act kinda as ALT key... let me explain. when i press N it acts like i have pressed N and holding ALT... for example if i press n and f after it then i get this in console:
N^[F
this is very frustrating because as i type i often end up in a programs menu {ALT+* combinations} , or with some unwanted chars...
I have tried many combination, but i could not solve the issue, so ANY idea/tip is welcome.

Check out the "/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/" folder and edit whatever layout you're using (I'm guessing "rs"):
$ ls /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/
# nano /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/rs
As you can see, there are more variants in there, so try another variant.
If you have previously edited this file, maybe it will help to find out what package owns that file and reinstall it:
$ pacman -Qo /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/rs
/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/rs is owned by xkeyboard-config 2.6-1
# pacman -S xkeyboard-config
Note that the "N" key is awfully close to AltGr (the right-side Alt). Maybe it's a hardware issue? Apple peripherals are overpriced pieces of faeces (mice and headphones mostly. Don't know about the keyboard; I'd much rather buy something else in the same price range).

Where is the Alt+Gr button? (German keyboard layout)

I have an iBook from the US and use it with German keyboard layout. I miss the Alt+Gr key. For example I need it to type the @ symbol, which I used to get with AltGrq.
Can anyone please help me how to activate the Alt+Gr key or how to type @, [, ], ~ with the German layout?

To create an @ in the German layout, press the Option and L keys simultaneously. The [ and ] can be made by pressing Option+5 and Option+6 respectively. To create an ~, hold down Control, Option, and N.

## Detail of bug
When login from Mac OS X with Microsoft Remote Desktop, the keyboard layout is always incorrect on the remote.
The client machine have a built-in keyboard of JIS 106 layout,
and the primary language is set to Japanese.
But on the remote, the keyboard layout is US 101.
So a input of Shift+2 does not result " but @.
I've seen the above behavior on the 3 remote enviornments described the above.
This bug did not occcur with Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1, even if the system language is English and keyboard layout is Japanese.

This bug also affects the Canadian English settings. If the client is set to Canadian English with a US keyboard the remote server is setup using a Canadian French keyboard. Using the language selection in the toolbar you can temporarily correct
the problem but the keyboard resets to french at the most inopportune times. The was a problem in the earlier RDP client and was fixed so it's sad to see it reoccur in the new client.

Why does Lightroom not have custom keyboard shortcuts?

Lightroom is a workflow app. It's not just about raw conversion, which could be done in ACR, but about speeding up the whole process of selecting, editing and cataloging photos.
It seems to me that out of all Adobe apps, Lightroom is the one which should have customisable keyboard shortcuts.
I've been using lightroom since shortly after it came put and I've been using the open-source plug-in keyboard customizer Paddy for several years which works okay at the moment. Each lightroom release breaks Paddy in some way and it's not as smooth as it could be if it was built in. Even so, I estimate I'm 2-10 time faster editing many photos with paddy than I would be without.
I know that even adobe's resources are limited, but adding keyboard shortcuts should be easy, certainly compared to re-verse engineering RAW file formats or fixing complex lens distortions!
At this point it seems clear that Adobe are choosing not to let us customise keyboard shortcuts. I'm not trying to change their mind, but I really want to know w

Alternative keyboard layouts

Hey everyone,
So I was considering making the move from QWERTY to a keyboard layout that's a little more efficient, so I thought I'd take a poll to see
who is using what kind of keyboard layout and why. I'm curious about Dvorak, programmer's Dvorak, and colemak, and have been researching each of their individual pros and cons. I'm thinking Dvorak sounds like the best out of all of the above, but colemak sounds relatively intregueing as well. so what's your opinion?

Just to let everybody know I am now 28 years old. I first learned how to type in typing class in junior high. I was using the Qwerty layout. The only nice thing I can say about the Qwerty layout is that it's available at any computer you want to use without any configuration.
Then I looked online for a better way to type and more efficient. That's when I learned about Dvorak keyboard layout. This was about four years ago. I stuck with it for about two years. I felt my right hand was doing a lot more typing than my left hand. It felt too lopsided for me. But that's just my opinion. I went on the hunt for something better than Dvorak and I found the glorious Colemak keyboard layout.
I have been typing with it ever since. My hands are a lot more comfortable and I can type faster now. It took me a month to actually get comfortable with the keyboard layout. If you actually go to this Java applet on Colemak's website.

You can just copy and paste a body of text and click on Calculate it will analyze the typing and compare the three different keyboard layouts. I just hope it becomes an ANSI standard like Dvorak has. I hope that happens in the future.
I just want everybody to know there is a third option out there and its great. If ever Colemak goes away I will be going back to Dvorak. I will never learn the Qwerty keyboard layout ever again.

Losing extra keyboard layouts on reboot

Hi!
I use both the French-Canadian and US-Englsh keyboard layouts on my Mac and have for years.
Both are available in the Input Sources menu item and all usually works fine, except that when I reboot, I reboot with only the US Layout in that menu. The French-Canadian layout goes away and I have to re-enable it.
Funny thing is that in the Login screen, it is properly available.
I've deleted the ByHost Preferences tied to this pref (com.apple.HIToolbok.[insert long UUID Here].plist) as I found to do in a forum, but the problem persists.
Funny thing is that I have a similar issue with 1Password's Safari Extension keeps getting disabled and I have to launch that app as well when I reboot before it becomes available in Safari.
Anyone else having similar issues?
Someone I know had a similar problem and said it was tied to FileVault2, and that disabling it and reenabling it fixed it for him. I do not currently have FV2 active, although I have in the past.
I might just try to re-enable it to see...

I thought it was solved but not. Loggin out and in works fine, but as soon as I reboot, I lose the extra keyboard layouts. I saw some other thread with a similar issue as well.
1Password has a similar issue where it won't load until I lanch the app itself, then reload Safari where the extension resides.
I'll see if this gets fixed in 10.8.1 when it comes out.
A bit of a hassltle to reenable the keyboard layout every time.

How can i disable Illustrator from changing my language / keyboard layout.

I have an azerty laptop and a qwerty external keyboard. Switching from any application to illustrator changes the language and therefore also my keyboard layout. No other application does this.

But i have a laptop with azerty layout (Belgian) and an external qwerty keyboard (Brittish).
So i need both languages selected in the System Pref >> Keyboard >> Input source
When "Brittish" is selected and i switch from Apple Mail to Photoshop to Skype to Chrome to ... it all works fine.
Only when i switch to Illustrator it also changes my language/layout from "Brittish" to "Belgian" and stays like that. I need to manually change it back in the menu in Finder.
I like the brittish better (with a qwerty keyboard) because of the shortcuts (eg. sqare brackets -> shortcuts for order in Illustrator are not even on an azerty (Belgian) keyboard).
Any idea?

How can I stop OSX from changing my keyboard layout

I have an English system, a French AZERTY keyboard (I live in France), and I work in five languages. I have three keyboard layouts installed, including French, of course (I use French numeric).
After a recent update, OSX suddenly started changing my input layout against my wishes. I have always set my preferences to use the same keyboard in all documents unless I manually change it - so please don't tell me about that feature, I know about it. It's not the problem.
It seems to want to revert to the system language (English) rather than the keyboard layout I've specified. I tried changing my interface language to French, and guess what? It wanted me to have the French keyboard layout!
If some Apple engineer decided we should automatically have the same keyboard layout as our system language - this is bad UX. Some of us touch type (and therefore are used to one keyboard layout) and need for it to stay put. Others use different layouts with different character sets (Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Cyrilic, etc.). Don't force me to have the "convenient" setting automatically with no override. If there is a way to get around this problem, please tell us. I've seen lots of complaints around about this phenomenon, but no solutions so far. Not from Apple, and not from anyone else, either.

Safari changes my keyboard layout when on password field

Hi,
after upgrade to Safari 5, I got really strange problem.
I have two keyboard layout configured, U.S., which I use regulary, and Czech, to which I switch on rare occasions when I need to write something in my native language. I have configured keyboard shortcut Shift-Cmd-Space for switching between those layouts.
Now, the problem is that whenever I enter a password field on a web page form in Safari, it immediately switches to the Czech layout and disables the U.S. one, so I even can not switch back! The keyboard shortcut does not work and the "U.S." item in the keyboard indicator menu is grey.
This is extremely annoying. Does anyone have an idea what is causing it and how can I fix it?
Also, I think (but I'm not sure) that I have sometimes seen this before. But now (probably after Safari 5 installation) it happens on all the passwords fields I tried (even on pages I never visited before).

mid-2008 15" MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard, Safari 5, all available updates. In the Language & Text section of the preferences, I have following settings:
Language: First English, then Czech, then the rest.
Formats: Region: Custom (mostly czech with some tweaks)
Input Sources: Keyboard & Character Viewer checked, Czech-QWERTY checked, English checked. Selected "Use the same one in all documents", checked Show input menu in menu bar.

Problem solved! I have installed Keywurl some time ago (I really missed Firefox's bookmark keywords). After I upgraded to Safari 5, Keywurl said "Ooops, I'm not tested with Safari 5, disabling myself", so I did not suspected it. But out of deseperation, I tried to remove the plugin completely from the disk. And it worked! No more problems with keyboard layout in password field. Strange, but at least it works.

Im having trouble setting the keyboard's layout for GDM.....

Advanced keyboard layouts

Hello, I want to create my own keyboard layout. I know how to do this with xmodmap and doing it through XKB doesn't seem hard either, but I'm looking for something a tad more advanced. I want to create extra modes (like caps-lock) and submaps, which work like modifiers, except you only need to press them once rather than holding down the button (like in window managers like Stumpwm). The idea is to use those modes and submaps to use the same buttons for different characters.
There are three ways of doing it:
- Software that creates keyboard layouts with this functionality, in which case: what is the software called?
- Creating multiple keyboard layouts and switching through them by other software. Unpreferred since it probably doesn't allow for submaps, but in this case also: what is the software called?
- Creating the software. I kind of doubt that the software exists, since surely I'm the only one who'd even want something like this. Thing is, I have close to no experience with programming, so this seems like quite a big first programming project. The advantage is that it'd give me motivation. Is it a good idea to just try to write this and learn as I go, and if so, is anyone willing to help me with it?

You can do 'submaps' with xchainkeys:

And you can call different xmodmap commands with for instance xbindkeys with a file in /tmp to keep track of which one you are using currently.
If you disable caps lock, you can get led control back with kbd's setleds. If setleds complains about not being able to reach the terminal or something, try it like this:
setleds -L +caps < /dev/tty0

UK MBPs keyboard layout options

I'm currently living in London and want to buy a MBP 13.
MBPs come with backlit UK keyboards and there are options for keyboard layout to choose when buying online.
However, US keyboard doesn't have the backlit feature!
The options for MBP 13 I can choose from are like below.
Backlit Keyboard (British) & User's Guide (English)
Keyboard (British) & User's Guide (French)
Keyboard (French) & User's Guide (English)
Keyboard (US) & User's Guide (English)
The funny thing is that all the options for MBP 15 have the backlit feature.

All MacBook Pro models have backlighting. They may have different keyboard layouts and different power cords but other than that I believe the hardware is the same for all countries.
I see where you are getting confused however I would recommend you call the online AppleStore (phone number is in the upper left of the store's web page) and ask for clarification.

Deleted my keyboard layouts

(hope this is the right category..)
I wanted to make some space on my HD and used an app to delete unneeded keyboard layouts - I deleted them all..
Now I'm unable to type on my MBP's keyboard. So I googled a little etc.. imported keyboard layouts from another Mac..
Problem starts here: When I want to add the keyboard layouts to /system/library/keyboard layouts I need to type my pw to modify the folder, but i _cant type_ T_T tried copy&paste which doesn't work. argh.. ("ah! still got the OSX install CD.." - also desn't work - need to type pw to install..)
Anyone know how I can solve this?

Better just reinstall your OS so you have a full working system.
In the future don't delete any keyboard layouts, the space they use is trivial.
