Is the new Canon XL-H1 camera supported in Final Cut?

Hi All,
I understand that FCP does not yet support the 24F (progressive) or 30F (progressive) modes in this new Canon camera.
Canon originally told me that an update to FCP was in the works which would incorporate this codec (or whatever it's called) but Apple will not tell me anything about this. But Canon now tells me that they can't comment on what Apple may or may not be doing.
Does anyone out there know more about this issue?
This is an extract from an email someone sent me about this problem which makes the issue much more clear:
"Hi Harry,
My incomplete understanding of both the 24F and 30F modes is that Canon
has been able to embed a truly progressive frame in a 60i stream. As
you may know these progressive frames were somehow captured from the
XL-H1's interlaced CCDs.
The problem is since these progressive frames are flagged in an
interlaced stream the NLE has to be able to extract them properly. My
understanding is that the current version of Final Cut Pro cannot properly
handle 24F or 30F. Apparently Apple needs to release an update to Final
Cut to allow it to extract the flagged frames. You might want to go to
the Final Cut Pro website to let Apple know how important this is you.
I am planning on getting the XL-H1 soon myself and I am hoping Apple
does something soon myself."
So here I am posting this message.
Is there anyone at Apple that I can get hold of and bug about this?
Ideas please ...
Best
Harry

The 24F mode on the Canon is real 24p in that it's 24 evenly spaced frames a second, but it's really just badly de-interlaced 48i. It's stored on tape as 24p in their own format, probably similar to the JVC's 24p by embedding it in 60p using frame repeat flags.
The 30F is generated from 60i in the same manner, but is stored again in some wierd format (everyone else just embeds 30p in 60i, making it totally compatible) so nothing understands it. This is a big mistake IMHO. Who's going to buy a camera that you can't capture into your NLE, and can't play on a HDV tape deck??

  • Is the Sony HDR-FX7 HDV Camera compatible with Final Cut Pro 5 or 6?

Has anyone gotten this to work correctly. I have read in a few forums that the camera is not supported by FCP and I checked on the compatibility list and it is not there. iMovie sees this camera and can capture from it.
I can not get FCP 6 to recognize the camera. I set device control to Sony HDV and I am only able to capture using the Intermediate Codec. When I switch to the HDV codec it only will record for a second then fail. Although I can capture with some limitations I still can't get FCP to recognize the camera and therefore video from the timeline won't playback on the camera.
I really don't want to have to buy a hdmi capture card or buy a HDV deck to get this to work. If anyone knows any workarounds it would be greatly appreciated.
If there are none any suggestions on a cheap compatible hdv deck or camera to get footage in and out would be great.
    Thanks.

I have never had a problem with my internal boot drive either capturing DV footage and since HDV shares the same data rate I didn't think it would be an issue.
Then you are lucky my friend. If you wish to keep tempting fate that is your choice. I am simply suggesting that you follow the suggested setup so that you could eliminate a possible problem.
I do think there are compatibility issues.
This may be the case. Have you used an easy setup that matches your cameras settings and then changed control to firewire basic as I suggested earlier?
I have manually set up the capture settings and it will only work to the intermediate codec.
Manually settings are not always the best method. Try an easy setup as I suggested earlier.
I have narrowed it down to 2 things, either it's a Final Cut 6 issue on an Intel Mac, or it's just not compatible (Apple does not list it in it's Compatible Hardware List).
What I am trying to do is to narrow it down further. I have given you suggestions but it does not appear that you have tried them. If you try these we can continue to eliminate until you have an answer.
Please post back when you have tried my previous suggestions.

  • Will the new GeForce 8800 make a difference for Final Cut Express?

Planning to buy soon a new 24 inches iMac, I am wondering if the new GeForce 8800 graphic card will make a significative difference compared with the ATI 2600 Pro?

Basically, no. The additional VRAM may enhance your overall RT Effects capability and may provide some general benefit if you run 2 monitors in extended desktop mode. But it won't make a difference in general editing or playback of your videos.

  • Using iMovie '08 on an iMac G5 with the new Canon and Panasonic cameras???

Once you get an HD component, you want to rapidly upgrade the rest of your system to HD. My question- which of the recently announced Panasonic and Canon cameras with 1080i or 1080p(24) can I use with iMovie 08 on an iMacG5? Do these new flash-based cameras have any ability to support nonAVCHD which isn't good for sports.

I have had good results recording football games in AVCHD, but you may not consider it acceptable.
A G5 is on the lower borderline of acceptable hardware for iMovie 08, so you should expect long importing and processing times.
AVCHD in iMovie requires an intel processor for importing. There may be a workaround by using third party software called "Voltaic". Do a search on these forums to find posts from people who use this.
Here is a sample of a AVCHD movie of a football game recorded on a Panasonic HDC-SD5 using 1920x1080. This version is in the medium setting for WebGallery.

  • Canon EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro Now Available...

There's been so much talk about the 5D, 7D, 550D on this board that I'm going to point to the EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro. This is supposed to speed to transcode of Canon Camera H.264 to FCP-friendly formats and let you add more metadata along the way.
    Enjoy!
Canon webpage. Under Drivers & Downloads. Once you select your OS, "Mac OS X", the download should appear near the top of the "Software" list.
    Note: (from Quickstart Guide)
This plug-in software allows you to convert MOV movies shot with an EOS Digital camera into ProRes files at high speed in the (Log & Transfer) window of Apple's Final Cut Pro.
FWIW: The quick start guide says cameras involved are 7D, 5D, 1D, no mention of 550D. Sort of odd.

For users in North America to make the Canon EOS REBEL T2i work (550D for Europe):
    1. Install the new Canon EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...nloadDetailAct)
    2. Go to Library/Application Support/ProApps/MIO/RAD/Plugins/CanonE1.RADPLug/Contents/Resources/
    2. Open up cameras.plist
    3. After the 7D info add the following lines of code (keeping to the coding structure):
    <key>T2i</key>
    <array>
    <string>Canon EOS REBEL T2i</string>
    </array>
    4. Save the text file. Close it. Everything should work now.
    Cheerz.

  • I am thinking of buying the new Canon EOS 1DX

I am thinking of buying the new Canon EOS 1DX camera.
Do I need to upgrade from Photoshop CS3 to take full advantage of the new gear?  Thanks,

    Yes. You'll need Photoshop CS6.
Only Adobe Camera Raw 7.1 (and later) supports the Canon EOS 1DX.
"The Camera Raw 7.1 plug-in is not compatible with versions of Photoshop earlier than Photoshop CS6."

Note: you only have until 31 Dec 2012 to upgrade to CS6 from CS3 at upgrade prices. Under Adobe's new "one version back" policy introduced in the CS6 cycle, which comes into full effect on 1 Jan 2013, you will have to pay full price for CS6 if you have not upgraded by then.

  • Camera RAW does NOT yet support raw files for the new  Canon Sureshot S95

Camera RAW does NOT yet support raw files for the new
    Canon Sureshot S95.
Adobe, please can you provide an update asap

    Hello!
I think that you need to be patient.
There has not been any release of Camera Raw since the release of the camera.
I recommend to try the next version once it will be released, as there might be preliminary support (and therefore not listed).
Usually, Adobe is amongs the firsts to support a new camera.
Even though the Camera Raw team is fielded with wonderful coders, I do not think that they do have a time machine to allow support before they have their hands on a camera

You need to contact Canon - or read the software specs - it sounds like the software you got form them is not supported by your computer
    Do I need this software?
Probably not - exactly what about it do you want?
Can I just download the pictures to my Mac without using the Canon software?
Probably - if you are shooting JPEG - launch iPhoto and in the iPhoto preferences set action when a camera is connected to launch iPhoto and connect your camera - iPhoto should launch and you should be able to import
Some cameras need to be set to mass storage mode - read your camera manual for details and procedures
If you are using RAW then your camera needs to be on this list and you need the versions of software noted - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757 - for older OS versions you can use google to find the list of supported cameras

It has been indicated that both of those cameras will be supported in the final release of Camera Raw 8.7. But there is no announced release date. There never is. I assume it will be before December 31. But that is only my guess based on the fact that the release candidate expires then.

I just purchased the new Canon SX60 camera. Despite downloading and installing the latest version of Adobe DNG converter, I receive an error message saying that Photoshop CS4 can't open up/convert raw files (.CR2). This is the same file format as used by the SX50, with which I never had any problem. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this problem? Thanks.

Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras  I do not see that SX60 as supported. Just how new is the SX60 when was it announces. Its support is not even listed in ACR 8.7 RC

  • Creating a QuickTime movie with the new Canon T5i  camera in iMovie 9.0.9.

Help needed creating a QuickTime movie with the new Canon T5i  camera in iMovie 9.0.9.  The project is done and looks good...I need help understanding what settings need to be set so I can make a QuickTime movie in the highest quality that would fit the ratio of 16.9 to be sent out to my YouTube page.  I played around with some of the settings and have not come with the right setting for the video.  I want the highest quality with the lowest amount of megabytes…thanks

I would suggest using SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE and choose 1920x1080 (if your source material supports this).
That should work well in YouTube.
If you want to go further with custom QuickTime settings,  here are some that should work, but in my experience, it will be no better than using SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE.
follow the instructions below to create a .mov video that will work on YouTube:
In iMovie, select Share > Export Using QuickTime
Next, you may want to check your Options to verify that the following settings are correct:Video settings
    Compression Type: H.264
    Frame Rate: 30 is preferred. 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97 are also acceptable.
    Data Rate: Automatic
    Key Frames: Automatic
    Frame Reordering: Unchecked
    Audio/Sound settings
    Format: AAC
Click Show advanced settings and choose Constant Bit Rate as encoding strategy
    Other settings
Size: Choose the original size of the video

  • Will there be a Camera Raw update For Elements 10 for the new Canon 5D Mark 3?

I have the new Canon 5D.  Love the results but, I can not process the photos in Lightroom 4 or Elements 10.  I downloaded the update for CS5 to see if there was a work around but I don't know my way around the software.  It looks like someone dropped the ball big time on this one.
    Joe

Ok, so what is so different in the Camera Raw for CS5/CS6 Beta vs Elements?  You would think that they would be both the same!  There are a lot of professionals like myself bought their Canon 5D Mk 3 thinking that the software would be there to support the camera release.  Sure, I am also wondering why Canon hasn't done an update with the release.   This feels like buying a car and some day in the future - we don't know when there will be road that you can drive it on.
Tried to convert the Mk 3 DNG files. Didn't work.  Get a purple or pink cover over the images.  It works great with my 7D files.
If I had a Camera to fall back on I wouldn't be so desperate but my Canon 7D (Which I have enjoyed for the last two years) was destroyed in a accident the day before the Canon 5D mark 3 was anounced.  So, I am starting from scratch and I need access to my Raw files to get my work done.  Working with Canon Software is not what I would use in a productive work flow.  If this was a hobby - OK but for production work, I need the right tools and right now, LR 4 which is the back bone of my work is useless.
