Is the Orange Iphone 4 handset Unlocked? (UK)

Does anyone know if the orange PayG iPhone4 handset is unlocked. If it is unlocked I might have to cancel my order with apple as orange are selling the iphone4 at a cheaper price.

From what I can gather the handsets (including PAYG) bought from a network are locked to that network. For the sake of £30 difference between a 32GB bought from Apple SIM free, and a locked one on PAYG I'd rather have a SIM free one and so sticking with my order from Apple.
The difference of the 16GB is even less.

when you buy a phone with a contract you pay much less because the carrier pay the difference relying on making profit on your contract
so the factory unlocked versions are much much more expensive

  • Is the US iPhone 4 factory unlock?

Hello friends, I live in Indonesia and I have a friend who stays in US and he will be going to Indonesia soon. I want him to buy me an iPhone 4 from the US but I was afraid that the US iPhone 4 is not factory unlock and it can't be used out of the US territory. Does anybody know about this? Thanks so much.

    Canada:
    1. iPhone 4 is locked to a Canadian carrier network licensed to sell the iPhone on their network when purchased from an authorized dealer including the Apple Retail Store.
    2. iPhone 4 is unlocked when purchased at full price only through the Canadian Apple Online Store.

  • HT4528 Verizon tells me that the iphone 5 is unlocked.  is that true?

Verizon customer support tells me that my iPhone 5 comes out of the box unlocked so that I can replace the sim with another sim while traveling internationally.  Is that true?

Yes. The SIM slot in the Verizon iPhone 5 is unlocked out of the box. This is required by the FCC in exchange for Verizon winning a spectrum auction last year. It will work with any compatible GSM carrier, including AT&T and T-Mobile in the US. It will not get LTE service on any US carrier other than Verizon.

Apple does not unlock iPhones - only the carrier to which the iPhone is
locked can initiate the unlock. You will have to work with Orange UK to
get your iPhone unlocked and there is no other legitimate way to get the
    iPhone unlocked.

  • Iphone 3GS Factory Unlocked with Orange in France Not working.

So the story is as follows.
I was working in France for the last few months on a ship. The engineer i was working with recived an iPhone from Orange as a bonus on his plan. He did not want the phone so he gave it to me. We talked to orange and had it unlocked. I did not use it as a phone while working as i had no real need for it. Nor did i want it to go for an accidental swim.
I have now returned home to Australia. With what I thought was a factory unlocked Iphone 3Gs. I restored the iphone firmware to Iphone OS 3.1.3 placed my optus Sim Card in to the iphone and connected it to my computer.
I am greeted with the following message:
"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.
Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported Carrier's store to receive a replacement SIM card."
I called the apple support line and i was told that without the orginal sim card there was nothing i could do.
I can not get the SIM card of the engineer as he is in france. I can still use the shipping agent to get in contact with orange.
If anyone knows of a solution to this problem it would be much apppreciated as right now i have shiny paperweight.
How can i get the phone to work with my optus SIM card?

It sounds like it was never unlocked by Orange in the first place and without his SIM you can do nothing.
Optus cannot do anything for you as only the original carrier can unlock it and that requires the original SIM card.
Its a brick until you return to France with the SIM card and then probably pay to get it unlocked - I can't recall if they do official unlocking there but its pretty likely.

  • Does the iPhone 5 come unlocked so I can put in a different SIM card?

I'm going to study abroad in Germany for a few months and want to make sure I can use my iPhone 5 from Verizon with a different phone company over there by just using a different SIM card. Can the iPhone 5 be used with any carrier via the SIM card?

I never had a iPhone, but I have been researching that exact question.  It seems that Verizon iPhone 5's automatically come sim unlocked.  Which is not a full unlock where you are able to delete certain programs you were not able to delete when you first bought the phone.  A sim unlock will allow you to use other sim cards for other companies, but you will not get LTE data. According to Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney: "she says there's no plans to lock Apple's handset at a later point. In other words, you should be free to use a Verizon-locked iPhone 5 on any compatible GSM and HSPA+ networks for as long as you'd like, including with AT&T and Canadian carriers. Of course, this still brings the caveats of having to both buy a Verizon model, either at full price or with a contract attached, and track down a nano-SIM for the carrier of choice. It could nonetheless settle the question of what carrier to pick if you regularly need a passport when you travel.  I believe this article will tell you all you need to know.  if not, you can go to verizon if the phone is locked, and have it sim-unlocked, as long as you have a account with them in good standing.

  • Unlocking iPhone 5 handset

I moved to Australia in January and requested that my iPhone 5 handset was unlocked by EE.  After 3 months it still hasn't been done so I am unable to use my phone for calls/ texts at all. When I have spoken to EE they said they have requested by Apple that my handset is unlocked. Please could you advise if you are able to assist as I am starting to get very frustrated,
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
    Thank you

You must work with EE since the iPhone is locked to them. Apple cannot
unlock an iPhone - only the wireless provider to which the iPhone is locked
    can unlock it.
You may have to start up a new account with EE (see if they offer a
Pay As You Go option) to get them to unlock the iPhone. Many wireless
providers will not unlock for someone who is not a current customer.

  • Is iTunes unlock of [Orange] iPhone 4 limited to carrier of SIM used during unlocking, or ready to use in any network?

    Hi folks
I have scoured the Apple forums and contacted Orange UK, and cannot find an answer to my question, so here goes:
Basically I recently upgraded my iPhone 4 to an iPhone 5 and would now like to sell the old phone. I will probably do this on eBay, so the purchaser could be from anywhere in the world, on any network. I contacted Orange to initiate the unlock and am awaiting my code. The Orange technician I spoke to told me that I wouldn't even need a SIM in the phone to perform the unlock, though I have since discovered this to be false information. From what I gather, the procedure involves inserting a non-Orange SIM into the iPhone before connecting with iTunes in order to unlock it.
Will the newly unlocked phone instantly lock to this new network? i.e. say I borrow a friend's Vodafone SIM to perform the unlock procedure, will the unlocked phone instantly become a Vodafone UK iPhone?
I want to be able to list the item on eBay as an unlocked iPhone 4, that anyone in the world can purchase and use on their carrier. Having paid £20 for the unlock code, it would be a shame if the phone is instantly locked to the network of the temporary SIM.
Also I've seen widespread stories of people not being able to send text messages on unlocked iPhones, due to some old carrier settings being retained during the unlock process. How can I avoid this potential problem? I just want to provide someone with a fully unlocked iPhone that will work on any network.
    Many thanks.
(PS: I have already seen this page and it doesn't answer my question: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5014 )

I too am looking for a definitive answer to the same question as the OP.
Here is what I have tentatively gleaned so far:
It appears that if you buy an unlocked iPhone from Apple then it is definitely completely unlocked i.e. you can put whatever SIM you like in it and change to SIMs from different networks whenever you wish.
However, the situation may be different for iPhones sold locked by a carrier and then unlocked by that carrier. I have seen a number of threads where people claim that when they have unlocked an iPhone using iTunes that the phone was then automatically re-locked again to the carrier of the new SIM.
    For example here:
    http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/iPhone-4-and-4S/Locked-iPhone-4S-with-wrong-sim/t d-p/1085345
This is also what I was told by Carphone Warehouse - a major phone retailer here in the UK. An iPhone sold as locked but unlocked by a carrier will be locked to the new carrier SIM when connected to iTunes.
I also cannot see why you have to have a different SIM in the iPhone to activate an unlocked phone via iTunes?
So I think it is reasonable for the OP to ask the question. I do wonder if the situation varies according to country of origin of the iPhone.

Hi. I'm planning to buy an iPhone 6 handset only in America. No network. Is it possible? I'm British and is going to use the handset in United Kingdom using a local network in Uk. Thanks

None of the iPhones currently being sold in the US is carrier unlocked, so no, they will not work.

  • I've recently purchased a second hand iPad 2 and it is locked to the Orange network. How can I get it unlocked without paying on top of what I have already done for the device?

Hi, I have recently purchased an iPad 2 and only just found out after trying to use a Giffgaff sim card that it is locked to the Orange network in the UK. I don't want to be paying any extra over and above what I have already paid so my question is, is there any way to get the iPad carrier unlocked via apple or orange.  I am waiting a call back from apple today and have read on the web that orange will charge me to unlock it.
Thanks for any help you guys can offer

Some iPads which were subsidized by the carriers are locked to the carrier, and in that case only the carrier can authorize an unlock. You'll need to talk to Orange, and pay their fee if necessary. They may well only unlock for the original purchaser, in which case you'll need to contact the person from whom you purchased the iPad. Apple can do nothing directly in the matter, since they can only issue the unlock when the carrier provides authorization.
    Regards.

    Please can you help....
I ordered an iPhone 5s in early September from the orange shop in Chamonix Mont-Blanc France.
I needed a new phone as i dropped my iPhone and broke it so it thought i would upgrade.
I was asked in the shop if I wanted a black or white one, I asked for a Black one, as all my iPhones have all been Black as I DON'T LIKE White ones. (sorry)
I was told my phone would arrive in a week so I waited with broken phone for new one. The following week I was told it would be the following week, the following week i was told the same but the assistant in the shop told me they would ring me when it arrived. Three days later i recieved a text from the shop to say the phone would be in tomorrow, when I went in they said it had not arrived and they would call me when it was in the shop.
They called me on Thursday the 17th of October to say the phone was in the shop.
I arrived at the shop at 6:00pm after my work, the shop closes at 7:00pm. I recieved the phone, signed for it and extra unwanted insurance with I was told I could only canceled in a month. I was then told they didn't have any sim cards in the shop, i said no problem the Phone i assume will need charging so i will take it home and charge it and return for the sim tomorrow.
    So the Phone remained boxed.
When I returned home and opened the box I realised it was a white one, I replaced the lid put it back in the bag, and returned it to the shop first thing Friday 18th October, to point out the error, only to be told "to bad" ?? I was told I could have changed it the night before but not this morning? They said I had ordered a Black one but as I had signed for a White one nothing can be done. I was angry and left the shop. I returned later the same day with a French friend to try and resolve this problem, as I wasn't sure if something was being lost in translation. I didn't think I was being unreasonable, it is a very expensive piece of equipment and this wasn't what i wanted. They told my friend that the phone was not available in Black, that was the 5, and that the 5s was only available in silver and gold, and that mine was a silver one.
I then thought it was my mistake as it was a new phone. She put a sim in the phone put it in the box and I left for a business meeting only to arrive and see a Black iPhone 5s sitting on the table??
So I then returned back to the shop with the Black one and mine still all boxed and untouched to prove they had blatantly lied to me an hour ago, only to be told that there was nothing they were prepared to do.
Is this fair practice ? I am at a loss with this and am looking for help ?

A minor point, but it may avoid a little confusion if, instead of saying "black" in reference to the iPhone 5s, say "space gray":

  • I purchased an iphone 4 from a friend, i called the carrier and they have unlocked it for me but the phone still needs to be activated as i have restored it. Can i activate the iphone through itunes by using a different carriers sim card?

    Help Please,
I purchased an iphone 4 from a friend, i somehow cleared it and it's now at the original activation screen, i have spoken to the carrier and they have unlocked it for me. Once the carrier unlock details get sent to apple, will i be able to use any carrier sim card to activate the iphone? currently when i connect to itunes it says the sim is not the original one and i need to insert the original sim... will this happen now that it has been carrier unlocked? i have been told the unlocking can take between 5 and 72 hours, do i just keep trying with itunes or do i have to do something different?
This is a christmas present for my son and i am running out of time, i'm not in an area that i can just go into an apple store and ask, i'm currently overseas in a very poor country and there are not many iphones that i have seen here so your help would really be appreciated.
i think the operating system is 6.0.1
    Thanks,
    Matt.

And have you waited that long? If not, then that's why it's not done yet.
