Is the power cord box thing suppose to get SUPER hot?

mine is super hot like its hard to even hold makes my desk turn really hot too.

Heah Matt,
When it's charging the battery it does get hot. If it remains hot after the battery is fully charged, contact AppleCare or visit an Apple store.

  • My laptop crashes - i think it's the power cord but i'm not for sure

    I have a 2 year old Toshiba Satellite Laptop model # A205-S4707.  I bought it brand new in 2008, but I just recently started having this problem.  I at first thought it was a problem with the video card because what will happen is the video freezes up and will show different color lines or a black or blue box.  I thought the window air conditioning unit by my desk being on may have something to do with it because I started noticing the issue at the beginning of summer when I started using the window AC.  The problem would normally happen when it would be loading my programs when I first turn it on, but now it crashes 30 minutes to an hour or maybe 2 hours after I turned it on.  I than thought it might be my power cord since there's a couple places in my power cord where the inner wire is exposed,  so I taped the areas and plugged it back in and it still crashes, but not as much as it used to.  The other day it wanted to crash every time I tried to start my laptop up, and since it would just crash after 2 hours of it being on. And this morning it wanted to crash while loading windows twice when I had it plugged in, but when I unplugged it it's working fine.  Something tells me it's the power cord causing the issue - anyone else have any experience with this issue? If so, how can this issue be resolved? I can't go on depending on battery usage because I like leaving my laptop on when I'm asleep (I have it turned off when I'm at work - so it's on probably 15 hours a day).  If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it. My OS is Windows Vista.
    THanks,
    Mike

    I have an 18-month P305 series Satellite and for a while (approximately 8-9 months ago) I couldn't figure out why my laptop would all of a sudden shut down while everything was working fine, or sometimes it even shut off when I press the power button to turn it on. My laptop was also acting pretty wierd with the Illumination Buttons, they wouldn't respond and froze, wouldn't light up after the computer has turned on and sometimes it won't turn off if the computer's been completely shut down, yes, the lights still stay lit afterward.
    Just last week, when I was moving my laptop around to adjust for comfort, the thing shuts down on me again, this time I realized that the ac light had a 'quick' flick and this tells me that there is something wrong with power supply, either DC jack or the cord by the plug. I usually disconnect the battery when I have it plugged in to preserve the life of the cells. So when every time this thing becomes loose, the laptop would shut off. I was actually blaming the problem with bad BIOS and and maybe faulty updated drivers. The other day, I held the wire (by the socket and the fuse) and kind of twist and turn it and sure enough, I lost power, and the ac light flickered. I knew right away that was the problem. I found an identical original OEM power supply on ebay for $15 shipped, received it today and all is well. All this time, the culprit was the power cord.
    My advice is to take the battery out and run the power from the AC cord, wiggle and turn the 'wire' slightly by the dc jack, also, test the plug to the DC connecter; hold the barrel (the plug socket to the computer) and wiggle it, if it doesn't shut off then it's the wire and you need a new power supply. Make sure you buy one that is of high quality. I recommend OEM for safety reasons.

  • Trouble connecting the magnetic end of the power cord

    hello,
    when I hook the magnetic end of the power cord to my MBP, I have to 'play' with the connection so that the power goes throught.
    I have to push, pull, tork, lift etc... the magnetic end so that finally the green or red light lights up.
    I was just annoying at first but now, I can't alway have power, the whole thing got terrible sensible.
    Do you think the cord is the problem or is it the receiving port on the mac?
    What can I do?
    Thanks.

    Apple is supposedly very good about replacing the MagSafe's, even out of warranty.
    But if they don't, then you might be able to use a nail file to sand down some of the plastic, and buff the metal a tiny bit on the (disconnected from the power please), metal contacts to remove a very slight covering of oxidation that occurs.
    I have to go around and do that to my coax cable every few years or the TV and internet reception gets flakey.

    MacBook Pro just shut down without notice. It had about 40% of the battery life. It will not turn back on and I noticed when plugged in the little light on the power cord is blinking orange, not a solid green like normal.  Anyone have this issue before?  I've only had this for about 3mos.  I called apple support. They tried one thing then said I have to take to the apple store. Unfortunately I don't have one nearby. So before I travel an hour+ away I thought is give it a shot on here. Thank.

    Hi S,
    Did they have you try an SMC Reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?

    My I phone 5 locked on me during an update to IOS 8. Nothing is happening at all. I have a frozen picture of the power cord and a red circle that says itunes.

    What happened is the update forced your phone into recovery mode. There's been a lot of issues with this, but the only thing you can do is plug the phone into iTunes and do a restore on it. Hopefully you have a backup so you can restore your information.

  • Computer won't turn on and the power cord doesn't light up

    My problem with the computer is that it will not turn on. The battery is fully charged, power cord is plugged into a working outlet. I have held down the power button for 10 second or even longer. Nothing turns it on and the power cord doesn't light up at all. Any thing will help.
    Thanks

    First, check that your AC outlet has power. Second, see this article: Intel-based iMac- What to do if your computer won't turn on and this one Resetting MacBook and MacBook Pro System Management Controller (SMC).

  • G4 ibook won't turn on the power cord stays orange and won't charge the bat

    In addition I removed the battery and the power indicator light went to green without the battery in and the power in it, but absolutely nothing. Replaced the battery and nothing. Please help I am in Ghana, and have no way to get help!!!

    Hey Ryan,
    Can you hear drumming [I studied with a Ghanian master from the Univ. there for 5 years and have a few hand carved djembes which are awesome].
    I'm hoping that will divert you because you're not likely to find a new adapter there but that's undoubtedly the problem. I bent the prong on one slightly and it did the same thing, it's possible yours is like that. If you don't have any knowledge of it being bent it probably happened inadvertently, so you might try letting it sit out in the hot African sun until the gold is very malable then just run your fingers round the prong very lightly try to align it. I tried all night and this didn't work but it did get the thing closer so it might work for you.
    Here's a link to a very good price where I got my replacement and it's good $38: http://store.shentech.com/ap24v145wsqs.html

  • How can I make my computer notify me when the power cord unplugs?

    My power cord for my PowerBook G4 tends to unplug without my noticing. Is there a program I can download or can I write an script so that it makes a sound when the power cord unplugs?

    That is the way Mac OS X 10.8 (aka Mountain Lion) works by default. Are you actually running that system? (See About This Mac in the Apple menu.) If so, make sure the check box in the shut down alert is checked:

  • T530 loses sound when you pull the power cord out

    When I pull the power cord out from my t530, I lose sound, until I reboot.  I have run updater thingy to get all latest drivers, that seems to what have caused this problem in the first place.  I was trying to get HDMI sound to work out of the mini display port which was a hit or miss challenge depending on the order of pluggin things in, but now this is the bigger chanllenge.

    if I do a "test" on the device it says it is being used by another application. If I enable/disable the device it doesn't fix it.
    I am not on a docking station, no accessories but a USB logitech wireless mouse.

    Anyone having the same problem?

    Makes no difference if anyone is having the same problem.  The important thing is that it's happening to YOU!
    You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.
    Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems.

  • Satellite Pro U400 sometimes freezes when the power cord is plugged in

    Hello! I know this problem has been discussed here and there but I would like to open a new thread on that. Here is the scenario.
    I have recently bought a new Toshiba Satellite Pro U400-247 (PSU45E) with two batteries: (a) the original one, (b) additionally purchased Toshiba genuine PA3636U-1BRL, 7200 mAh. The notebook has the latest BIOS (4.80) and the latest drivers downloaded from Toshiba and installed (ConfigFree is not installed). I am using XP Pro SP3 (clean install done by myself). Everything is working very well, except for one thing:
    Sometimes (but not always), when the notebook is working on battery and I plug in the power cord, everything freezes and I have to restart. Some observations:
    (a) it tends to happen more frequently when the low battery alarm has already sounded;
    (b) it seems to happen more frequently with the 7200 mAh battery and less frequently with the original battery;
    (c) it seems to happen more often when a USB device (e.g. mouse) has been connected with the notebook, but that is not a rule;
    (d) it seems to happen less frequently when I move the USB mouse at the time I am plugging in the power cord;
    (e) I have experimented a lot with Toshiba PowerSaver's settings (e.g. changed the CPU levels for my profiles) but nothing I have modified seems to change the situation;
    (f) I have tried various suggestions I found on different forums, but no avail (e.g. BIOS settings);
    (g) otherwise, I can say that I really have not seen a smoother computer, everything else is really working just fine, no other problems whatsoever :)
    All this makes me think that this must be some kind of bug in the motherboard drivers, the PowerSaver driver or other drivers interacting with the battery, the CPU or possibly USB. Is there an explanation for this problem and can it be rectified somehow (e.g. by providing a driver update)?

    Hello, thanks for the reply!
    My bad, of course I meant the chipset driver. That, however, does not change the essence of the question. Also, I know that a notebook should function properly even the AC adaptor is connected or not connected. That is why I posted my question.
    As for the OS reinstall, sorry, I would not do that just on some wild guess from somebody. I recently finished the clean OS install. I have installed XP on dozens of notebooks in my life and I know what I am doing. I have been into computers and networking for 15 years and I know when I see a problem not related to how I install my OSes.
    My personal opinion: this problem has not to do with the OS install since the same problem also existed when I test-installed the XP OS image from Toshiba's own downgrade CD (that was before I did a clean install from my own slipstreamed CD). And, if you really use a properly and carefully configured OS with all the necessary software, an OS reinstall is not something you just do every day.
    As for the rest (testing the memory / adapter / motherboard etc.): as I have mentioned, similar (although not identical) topics have been raised in various other instances (e.g. at http://laptopforums.toshiba.com/t5/B...EABCA64EE6C5D9) . That means that this problem is most probably not specific to my computer or even to U400 but it may happen with other Toshiba notebooks too. Therefore a (rather standard) suggestion to spend days on reinstalling (and in my case, carefully reconfiguring) the OS, checking the memory, adapter, mobo etc. does not sound as the most plausible one in this case. FYI, I always do full tests on hardware right after I have installed an OS. In this computer, all tests (Toshiba's own; 3rd party memory diagnostics, HDD diagnostics) were passed OK. Indeed, I did not have the AC adapter tested but as it otherwise works fine, the possible problem (if there is one) would be a minor one to notice, and would require testing at a Toshiba service centre (there is no direct Toshiba agency in my country). I think testing the AC adapter is the last resort as much more probably, the problem lies somewhere else.
    Even if this problem is hardware-related, I do not expect Toshiba to replace all such hardware out there. However, on many occasions, hardware-related problems can be cured or alleviated on the software side (e.g. by a driver or BIOS update). Since it seems that other people are having similar problems with Toshiba hardware/software, I thought that maybe someone has found an actual solution or maybe there are Toshiba employees reading these forums who could look into it.

  • Does a Laptop Warranty Cover the Power Cord?

    Hi, I bought a HP Envy Touchsmart 15 and it is still covered by warranty.   However, I cannot find any support help online such as  the support chat which I find very odd since I just used it about a month ago when my battery died!  Where did all the support go?
    Anyways, when I plug in my laptop, the LED by the power port does not come on, and my laptop will not charge or turn on at all.  My battery is dead, but I know it works becasue it is less than a month old.  Since my laptop will not run on AC power even with the battery removed, I feel the power cord is the problem.
    I would really like to know if my warranty covers the power cord, and if so how do I contact HP, since there is absolutley no information when I go to "Contact Us" besides the consumer forums.
    I am a ECE student at UT in Austin, and every day I go without a laptop is hurting my grades.  So I need help ASAP

    Hi
    Yes, power cord, adapter are covered under limited warranty. HP would replace it for you if it's faulty.
    Check warranty: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/weInput?cc=us&lc=en
    These are what I could find to help you:

    Since the iOS7.0.2 update to my iPhone 4S, I can no longer choose use of my Bluetooth device if using the power cord to listen to MUSIC or answer my phone (choice of powercord as 'dock,' speaker, & phone only).  Was this former-feature now an oversight??  I'd really appreciate having my Bluetooth once again listed as a choice of  audio option.  Especially considering the battery life is not what it was prior to this update, and requires recharging often.

    Sorry to tell you but unless you have a Retail Apple Store close by, they are the only ones I have found with all the adapters and accessories. I bought an extra lightning to usb adapter the other day to use in my truck. Good luck....

    I have a Power Mac G4 double mirrored model and everytime I shut it off it will not go on when I hit the power on/off button again. However, if I unplug and plug in the power cord it boots fine and everything is OK. The PMU and logic board have been reset. Sometimes my Mac goes on just by pressing the power on button but most times I have to pull the power cord and put it back in. Any ideas or help out there for this? Could it be a failing power supply? Apple Care says that this model is obsolete so there is no help from there. John

    Hi John,
    That's often a sign of a bsad Capacitor in the Power Supply, but...
    Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...
