Is the Thunderbolt Display ever going to get a refresh?

Assumed we'd see a thin version two summers ago when the thin iMacs came out. Nope. Assumed we see an update when the MacPro was released. Nope. Does anybody know if Apple is getting out of the stand-alone display business?

IMO, no.

I am recording with Logic Pro X, using my Yamaha XS8 keyboard as a Midi controller. I also have a Thunderbolt Display. Every time I play and release a note on the keyboard, the Thunderbolt Display speaker emits a doink sound. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop? My sound is running through the Saffire Pro 40 Interface (Focusrite) into external speakers with powered amps.
Also, When I record I am hearing little pops in the system. I have checked all of my meters and they are not clipping. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop?

    Pancenter,
Thanks for the response, but I do not have a midi interface. I am using a midi to usb connector cable, thus bypassing the need for a Midi interface.
The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?

    Tristan...
This is what you have, correct?
    http://www.alesis.com/usbmidicable
    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

  • How do you get your dock to appear on the Thunderbolt display?

When I connect my MacBook Air to the Thunderbolt, the dock remains on my laptop.
My husband's MacBook Pro automatically puts the dock at the bottom of the Thunderbolt screen.
Also, when I open any application or a new window in an open application, the new window appears on my laptop
and I have to drag it to the Thunderbolt display.
Is there any way to get the dock and windows to appear on the Thunderbolt automatically so I can work only on the
    Thunderbolt?

    Thank you, mende1!
So, if I want to use the Thunderbolt as an extended display and not as a second display mirroring what is on my computer's screen, what would I need to do?
Malcolm's answer has me mirroring my laptop which is better than I had.
But, I used to be able to have my Apple Mail on my laptop, while working on other applications on the Thunderbolt.
I think that is what you are referring to..... would love help!   Thanks!

    Hello QuinnDev,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you are trying to use your MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt Display in closed clamshell mode (MacBook Pro closed), but sometimes the display doesn't stay on.  I found an article that talks about closed clamshell mode.  You would have to fulfill the following requirements to use your display this way:
    Requirements for closed display mode:
    Power adapter
    External keyboard, mouse, or trackpad
    External display
You can find all the steps and the full article here:

  • How to connect your hdmi tv to the Thunderbolt display?

    Hello,
I've just got my Thunderbotl display which is really nice, but i have question and i hope this would be possible.
How to connect an external display, in my case the HDMI tv to the thunderbolt display?
The connection would looks something like this:
Macbookpro (late 2011 15') -> Thunderbolt cable -> Thunderbolt display -> Thunderbolt to hdmi adapter -> HDMI Display
But currently i cannot get any screen on my hdmi display (it remeans black).
p.s. runing latest version of OS X
    Thanks

    See secrions 14 and 16.
If your MacBook Pro does support two external displays you may be able to use your TV with a Thunderbolt display.  While a Mini DisplayPort adapter won't work plugged directly into a Thunderbolt display, it will work if a Thunderbolt drive is connected between the displays.  This reportedly works with Seagate GoFlex drives.  LaCie drives don't work plugged into Thunderbolt displays.

I have my Macbook Air hooked up to a Thunderbolt Display, is there any way to power on the Macbook Air using an Apple USB keyboard plugged into the Thunderbolt display? I would like to be able to keep the Macbook Air in the Archbook dock and not have to open it to power it on?
    Thanks for any advise.

  • Will the Thunderbolt Display work when I close the lid?

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro. I'm thinking about buying the Thunderbolt Display, but only if it can simulate a desktop and I can close the lid of my Macbook. I'm asking this because I know it goes to sleep when closed and was wondering if the Display makes it work differently. thanks.

Works great and how I do 90% of my computing.
I use a usb wireless keyboard with the receiver plugged in to the back of the TBD. When the laptop is asleep press the space key once or twice to wake up the display (be patient, doesn't work as fast as you think it should). I use a screenlock password, so enter it and we're working!
One note: if the computer is turned off you can not turn it on from the keyboard. You'll have to open the laptop, turn it on, and once you hear the chime you can close the laptop and you're gtg.

  • Real time fan speed and temperature of the Thunderbolt Display

Is there software program that allows you to know the real time speed of the itnernal fan of the Thunderbolt display. Also I would like to monitor the internal temp of the TBD.  I have Istat which allows me to do both but only for my MBPro not my montior.
    Thanks.

Have you ever cleaned you machine? Since it's an iSight (which is actually 3rd generation, Ambient Light is the 2nd, Rev A the 1st), you can't open it but you can vacuum the air vents, which might help.

Are we ever going to get angry birds in South Africa, afta leaving android jus found out i cnt get angry birds on iphone 5

From what I understand, games are not available in the SA App Store as the goverment cannot make up their minds regarding the age classification of games. So it's not Apple and not the developers but the SA goverment that is blocking the sale of games in SA. The only way to get access to games is to have a US or UK iTunes account.

  • Is there a way to disable the Thunderbolt Display?

    Hey Guys,
I recently got a Thunderbolt Display and connected it up to my iMac (i bought the iMac in Jan 2013) and everything is working just as perfect as i thought it would apart from one thing.
I have had a search around to see if there is any way to turn off the Thunderbolt display without having to keep pulling out the Thunderbolt Cable, as you can imagine having to do this each time means that i need to re-arrange all my windows when i plug the display back in. I have tried to use SwitchResX but when disabling the thunderbolt display it turns off and then instantly turns back on.
Does anyone know if there is an App or something that can be installed to perhaps put the screen into sleep mode without disconnecting? I have also looked at the screen saver hot corners as someone on the  community mentioned that but this never worked either.
    Cheers
    Michael

I am looking for the same solution! Had the same experience with SwitchResX.
    Please, people, help us!

  • The ethernet port on the thunderbolt display is not working

The ethernet is working when the cable is connected directly to my mac laptop but when connected the thunderbolt display there is no connection.  Is there some type of set up for the ethernet connection or can this port just be broken?
    Thanks for the help!

Afterthought on an older post: it isn't immediately clear that the Ethernet port on the Thunderbolt Display works through the "Display Ethernet" interface, rather than through the "Thunderbolt Ethernet" interface. The latter was already present in the list of network interfaces in Network Preferences, while the former had to be added via the + button --- at least that was the case when I installed the TB display to work with my 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina this week.
The AppleCare rep didn't know the difference either and agreed with me that it was puzzling that using the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter on the Thunderbolt port of the display did work, wheras using the Ethernet port directly didn't (even though there were lights flashing on the Ethernet port of that other computer I tried to connect to in Internet Sharing mode). Close reading of the above posts made me go look for that mysterious "Display Ethernet" interface...  thank you Clinton!

  • Mac OS X 10.8 crashes after disconnecting the Thunderbolt display

Wondering if anyone can help my Mac OS X 10.8.5 crashes after I disconnect the thunderbolt display.
I normally work in the studio with my macbook connected to an external display.
When I go to use it without the thunderbolt display it crashes - 4 times in one day, which really isn't ideal when your freelancing.
I've checked my log files and I have a list of panic reports. I'm not too sure what I'm supposed to be looking for, but each of the reports refer to the graphics control. I've read online it might have something to do with the display sleep, so I've reset that.
