Is the video in the canvas a safe way to judge video quality...

When I make the canvas larger the video quality becomes more pixelated. Is this an accurate representation of how the video will look if I export a DVD or output through a KONA card?
Thanks

No, the Canvas/computer monitor is the LAST place to judge quality. And no, it will not look the same at all.
If you are working with DV, then you can output via firewire to your camera then to a TV, if HD, then you need a capture device and HD monitor, or HDTV. A MXO2 Mini and HDTV is a good way to see how your footage really looks on a TV.

  • Moving or zooming the canvas crashes my system.

Been having this problem for a while now, and I just cannot seem to fix it. It also seems like nobody asked the exact same question before. All previous forum posts seem to be about photoshop itself crashing, while in my case my entire system locks up.
It seems to work fine at the start, but it will lock up on me on random. I tried finding out what the exact problem was, and it seems that moving about the canvas in any way always seems to be the cause. I also often get this while I try to save, in the saving process I would move my canvas around, and it would lock up on me. Thus making my .psd-file corrupt/unreadable. I want to say I'm getting frustrated with this, but I already am...I can NOT get any work done.
I tried different methods to approach this, but no luck. One is installing the latest video driver, but it already seemed to be up-to-date. Second would be disabling certain plugins in Photoshop, like the FastCore and the MMXCore ones. But even that did not solve the crashing. I feel I am running out of options I can find, so I am pointing my attention here, hoping that someone can help me.

One of the things I can mention about my RAM is, The cooling I installed on my CPU was so big that I couldn't properly place the RAM under it, so right now there is a 4GB chip on each outer slot instead of the recommended position. Would RAM misplacement be the problem? If so I should probably get some smaller RAM then (which I feared I had to when I built it). I want to know for sure.
If the RAM isn't the cause...I wouldn't know how to figure out which one of the other components could be the issue.

  • Why is the CANVAS so shy all of all sudden?

Suddenly, when I want to slide the Canvas around to enlarge it full screen, it hides behind the Viewer or the Browser or the Timeline. Brand new phenomena. Any shortcuts for making the Canvas fullscreen and back? And why this new curtailment? - Thanks!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   fcp 5.1.2

The Viewer, Browser, Canvas and Timeline are all different windows that have their own visual hierarchy. If you resize the canvas and then select the viewer and they overlap, the viewer will cover the canvas. Quickest way to get back to your canvas if you lose it is using exposé.
To preview your movie turn on Digital Cinema Display. Go to the toolbar ----> View ----> Video Playback ---> and Select Digital Cinema Display Playback.
Now use command + F12 to toggle between cinema display and your standard editing view. If you're using a notebook you'll have to reclaim your F1-F12 keys in system preferences.
Other hotkeys for navigating between your windows while editing:
    Command + 1 = Viewer
    Command + 2 = Canvas
    Command + 3 = Timeline
    Command + 4 = Browser
Option + H will give you a list of all the hotkeys.
    Good luck.

  • Banner size video - how can I set the canvas to an odd size?

I'm interested in creating web page ad banners that include some looping video.
Is there a way to set the canvas size to 350x250 or some other odd size?
If not, do you know if any other video editing software can allow this?
    Thanks,

No. FCE works with fixed sizes.
Try your question on the FCP forum next door, FCP can use other sizes.

  • Is there video capture software which will capture only the canvas and not my cursor or the way I move the canvas?

    Hi,
Does anybody know of a video capture software which only captures the canvas and not my cursor or the way I move the canvas?
I want to simulate a painting being created brush stroke by brush stroke. It would also be good if I could select the layer that it is meant to be recording.
I guess this would have to be a plugin of some sort.
If not - do you have any good suggestions of the best workflow of creating this from Photoshop to After Effects (I don't want to use revealing paths etc...)
    Thanks for any help,
    Luke

It would also be good if I could select the layer that it is meant to be recording.
That won't work. Screen cap tools by their nature always capture the display buffer of the whole active window. At best, they respect GDI "drawing layers" and regions like Camtasia does, meaning they differntiate between mouse cursors, window frames and the actual content to get more efficient compression. For the rest - see the previous answer.

  • Cannot read videos on the Canvas

    Hi all!
I'm still getting used to FCE 4.0, but something bothers me: I can't read videos on the canvas screen. I either get sound an a blue screen with a "non rendu" (it's a French version), image, but no sound (get beeps) or the blue sreccn and the beeps.
    What gives?
    Thanks in advance,
    Claude

This happens if your clips do not match your sequence settings. What exactly are the item properties of your clips? What are the item properties of your sequence? When you put the first clip into the timeline, do you not get an option to change the sequence to match the clips? If that does not happen the clips are probably in a format that is not supported by FCE, but I'm only guessing without any real information.

  • I have a stupid black box that (not the canvas, its another box) my footage sits on top of in FCP 7. I didn't shoot it myself so I don't know what camera was used. I just don't want any black blocks above or below my video.

I was given this footage and did not shoot it so I do not know what else was done with it or how it was shot. Here is some info. According to quicktime the video, H.264 DV, 720 by 480 (640 by 480), Millions  16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 29.97 fps,
In FCP it says the frame size is 480 by 270. Compressor Windows Media 9. 29.97 fps .
I can change the color of the box under the dropdown to white, checkerboard 1 or checkerboard 2. I changed it to white but when I playback it turns black again. Please help!

Your post contains terms that are inaccurate and inappropriate for a video editing application but I'm going to assume you've not really used FCP very much.
You have provided two mutually exclusive descriptions of the video. ONe is accurate, the other is impossible. Which one do we believe?
If you don't have Flip4Mac installed, Windows media is not likely to be decompressed at all. H.264 is difficult to play back in real time and almost impossible to edit unless you transcode to a more editor-friendly codec like DV. You can do that with Compressor.
You seem to have a scaling issue since FCP is trying to place your 720x480 clip into a 720x480 sequence but think the video is half that size and you have not told it to scale it up (which might not be a good idea) so the clip is sitting on a transparent background which FCP will show as black, white, or checkerboard. Either way, it's not really there.
You also do not seem to understand the difference between the canvas background, which does not render, and the background that is seen behind scaled clips that do not fill the frame.
Your post has lots of issues.
    Let's try to basics again.
Since you didn't shoot the video, you need to talk to whoever gave it to you and try to determine what codec it really has been created in.

  • Can't see video in the Canvas window

Something's just gotten turned off and I can no longer see an image in the Canvas window.
I can hear the audio as the sequence plays, but there's no video.
    What's happened?

Just figured it out: "Wireframe" had gotten selected instead of "Image + Wireframe" (in the Canvas drop-down menu).

  • Video freezes in the Canvas

Has anyone encountered a problem like this -
When I open a clip from the timeline into the Canvas and hit play, the clip starts playing but after a few seconds the video freezes; however the playhead in the timeline continues moving normally and the audio continues playing normally.
I discovered that if I render all video the problem goes away, but as soon as I do any more editing (even simple things like the razor tool, that doesn't require rendering) the problem comes back. Goes away as soon as I render video again.
In all other respects, FCE seems to be working fine and I have completed projects to DVD without further hitches. But it sure is aggravating to have to render all the time just to watch my results in the Canvas.
I suspect someone's going to tell me to update QT, so here's the rundown on my system - FCE HD 3.0 on an iMac G5 with 2GB memory, 10.4.2 and QT 7.0. I have not installed the Apple Intermediate Codec 1.0.1 or the ProApps Update 2005-02. All my projects are NTSC 4:3 DV. If you recommend that I update any or all of this, which revs of which updates do you recommend?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions / fixes.

Well, I did mean the Canvas, not the Viewer. I guess I should have said 'when I play a timeline clip' instead of 'when I open a clip.'
I almost never change the Canvas or Viewer window sizes and don't recall any elevator strips showing, but I'll check the window sizing, maybe I inadvertently bumped it.
    Thanks for the suggestion.

  • When using Final Cut Express, the video in the Viewer window looks fine, but when I insert the video into the Canvas Timeline it appears to lose resolution, and look fuzzy and blurry. Are there preferences or settings for the Timeline that cause this?

When using Final Cut Express, the video in the Viewer window looks fine, but when I insert the video into the Canvas Timeline it appears to lose resolution, and look fuzzy and blurry. Are there preferences or settings for the Timeline that cause this?

Thanks David. I had to convert the mts file to Quick Time (using AunSoft Conversion software) before I could import it into Final Cut Express. And I made sure I kept the size of movie (720 X 480 with letterbox) to compliment what I set my Panaconic AVCCAM video recorder at (720/60). Even after I fully render it, it still looks fuzzy in the Canvas window at the right that plays what I have editing down in the Timeline. A friend that edits some using Final Cut Pro helped me to narrow things down to this problem. This is also wierd. If my Viewer window at the left is set to 200% to get the person's head the same size in the Canvas window at the right we needed to put it to 400%. Does this make any sense. We think we need to control the Time line resolution somehow but cannot find any options from my manual, or the help, or in the various drop down menus. Do you have any clue? What is going on?

  • I now get a blank (white) screen in the Viewer.  Can still drop video from the viewer into the canvas, but don't see it in the viewer.  Please help!

It doesn't seem to matter what project I'm working on... the picture in the viewer is gone.  All I see is a blank (white) screen.  If I put the cursor over the viewer and drag to the timeline, the clip will appear on the time line (and in the canvas) but I don't see it in the viewer.  I usually edit my clips in the viewer and not on the canvas.  Can anyone explain why this might be happening and how I might fix.  I'm suspecting I must have messed up one of the settings but I'll be darned if I can figure out which one or how to fix.  Please help!

David.  Thank you very much.   The problem was not with the canvas but rather the Viewer.  But the solution was the same.  Somehow, the Viewer window was re-set to Alpha.  I changed it back to RGB.... and the picture is back.   These issues are often very simple.... but they can drive you bats if you don't know the answer.   Very grateful.  Tim

  • Can´t import files or iMovie projects, and are unable to view on the canvas

I have just gotten the Final Cut Express software, but i have unfortunately run into some problems:
The biggest problem I am having is all my footage no longer works. When I go to import it into FCE, it gives me the error:
"File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
This is also true for my iMovie projects: it gives me an error, and a list of the problems.
I can view the video in the viewer, but when I export it to the timeline and try to view it via the canvas (to see if it matches the music), it says that the video is "unrendered". Is there another video format I should be using that would enable me to view this footage with the imported music in the canvas? Or must I re-render every time I make a change (which I am sure I shouldn't have to!)? I'm very new to FCE so I do not understand it fully.
    Thank you!

  • Opening the Canvas window and the Timeline from the browser

I am on an Intel 2x2.66 Dual Core using OS 10.4.11 and working in FCP 6.04.
I know this is a stupid question but having been a composer all my life, I am not up to speed on FCP and I seem to be unable to find the answer in my manual.
I dragged a QuickTime movie to the browser window. It is 500x375 in dimension and uses a H.264, AAC codecs. (info I got from the Get Info window).
The video shows up and plays in the Viewer window but I cannot get the Canvas window nor the Timeline to open.
I have tried selecting the sequence from the list in the browser and then control clicking it and looking at the shortcut menu there. The manual says I should choose Open Timeline from this shortcut menu but that is not even a choice I have. I don't mean it is grayed out, I mean there is no Open Timeline choice on the menu.
As an alternate, the manual suggests selecting the sequence and then choosing View > Sequence in Editor. I tried this also. There is no Sequence in Editor choice under the View menu. There is a Clip in Editor choice but when I select that it simply opens the movie in Quicktime.
I am aware that I am probably forgetting something simple or doing something stupid but I cannot figure it out. Help would be much appreciated.
    Thomas

the simple fact that is being eluded to here is that without an active sequence in the project (shown in the browser) there is no canvas or timeline. If you delete your sequence from the browser, the timeline and canvas will disappear, and you will have to create a new sequence, then open that sequence by double clicking it, to get those windows back. Canvas and Timeline display sequence content. No sequence, no c/t.

  • Is the canvas something like "the final output"? Or is that the viewer?

I am making a video of my HD footage i shot with my Full HD Camcorder (Sony HDR-SR12).
When i go through te timeline and play something, it shows fully in my viewer, but in the canvas i get only a selection of the full image (it seems that it is zoomed in)... So, my question is, do i have to "make the video smaller" by choosing image+wireframe in the canvas? Because i am afraid that when i output on to a DVD, i will also get the zoomed-in video? Or is the Viewer the "final output?"... I am getting crazy, because i can't let two or more clips play after eachother in the Viewer, right?
Also, what is the best way to output my full HD footage? (without loosing to much quality) Just click "Export -> Quicktime Movie"? Wil quicktime not lose the HD? Thanx...

The canvas always displays the final result and quality of your editing in the current sequence in the timeline; the viewer is just a way to monitor single clips (not the composition of clips as in the canvas) and displays the quality of the clip usually before you edit it into the timeline.
This is important, because if (for example) your sequence (in the timeline) is a standard DV while your captured clips are HD, when you look at a clip in the viewer opened from the browser, you watch it at +HD quality+, when you drag (edit) the same clip into the timeline it is down-converted to the +DV lower quality+; and this is what you see in the canvas. Instead if you open a clip from the timeline (not browser) in the viewer, you see the exact same quality as in the canvas, but only for that single clip. So the best way is to always check quality in the canvas, since it shows the result of all your editing, conversions, and composition, as it will show up in the exported movie.
Now, to really verify the result in the canvas you must also make sure to:
    - use Fit to Window (from the small zoom button on top of the canvas window) when you want see the full frame and its composition, but not the final quality
    - instead use 100% (same button) to see the final quality for HD
    - or even better connect the firewire output to an HDTV through a HDV deck (or camcorder) for HD, or to a standard TV through a D/A converter (or camcorder) for standard DV. The advantage of this solution is that you see the final result on the final output device while editing, without having to burn DVDs to check it (and this is almost mandatory when you import images and want to have control over interlacing artifacts).
When you export to iDVD you always use Export/Quicktime Movie even if you burn the DVD on different Mac; if the burner is on the same Mac you can uncheck the Make Movie Self-Contained option, so the file will be smaller and the export faster; otherwise you leave that option checked, and the file will contain all video and audio media necessary for burning (but the file much larger, and export much longer).
One more note: the Image+Wireframe option in the 2nd small button on top of the canvas (or also viewer) window allows you to apply changes to the frame size and position directly in the canvas without using the Basic Motion control of the viewer; in any case, whatever change you apply and you see in the canvas will be reflected also to the exported movie.
My guess in your case is that you are using a wrong (standard DV) setup for your sequence even if you captured HD, and that probably you zoomed in too much so that both the canvas and the exported movie show a small portion of the original frame.
I hope this helps a bit
    Piero

Hi Russ, Thank you for your reply!
    System Spec:
    2x2.26 Ghz QUAD-CORE
    12 GB RAM 1066 MHz DDR3
I've stored the library in HARD DISK which is installed inside my computer (1 TB capacity) and different from my hard disk in which I've installed all my applications (600 GB capacity).
I've installed FCP since 2001, bought FCP X in 2012: never had a problem. Yesterday I was editing my video of my last vacations (in California!) and I have updated FCP X, downloading FCP X 10.1.1: then the problem!
Strange is the fact that I've just tried to export a short project, I can see the final product quite well.
What is impossible is playing the clips within Final Cut: they are jumpimg, moving, presenting some frame in green or red ...
    Everything all right in iMovie.
I've just checked the RAM: 9GB out of 12 GB is busy, could this be the problem?
Motion is very slow: for 20 sec of project, it takes minutes to play. And once again, if you finalize the projet and export it in Quicktime, you can see it correctly.
I do hope you may suggest something, I'm getting crazy!
    Thank you in adavance
