Is the Web 216 Palette Necessary Anymore?

Is the web 216 safe color palette an issue anymore with
modern computers and their graphics cards?
Is this only really an issue when trying to design sites for
PDAs or cell phones?

I suppose it depends who whether we are working alone as self
employed, or amateur webauthors, or we are in a bigger
organisation.
Most of us can't afford multiple PC's, MAC's *NIX boxes and a
mixture
of VDU's flat screens etc etc.
Whenever I get the opportunity - I check my sites on other
PC's /
monitors to check they look reasonable.
After all - a good comparison is the TV business - you only
have to
visit a TV store to see how different many pictures are, and
how badly
some TV's are set up.
Long ago I worked in a company manufacturing TV cameras,
monitors,
transmitters etc., and it was always very frustrating to see
how
poorly the average television reproduced the image compared
to the
studio quality monitors. Even today's digital transmission
and
displays are a poor reproduction of the studio I would
imagine. I've
not seen high definition TV - so can't comment.

Suggestions for Mac maintenance
Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off-site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; make them independent of each other. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine.
Keep your software up to date. Software Update can be set to notify you automatically of updates to the Mac OS. Some third-party applications have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis.
Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” “extenders,” “cleaners,” “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” or "utilities." UDDI is reqd when you want people to explore and get the metadata of the service you are going to expose.
I mean the WSDL file can be downloaded from there.
Well, if your service is for specific users or systems, you can provide the same to the user directly by mail or other means.

A color that's impossible on the web?

I'm mostly a print and photography person, so I have a theory about what's going on here, but in practice, I'm SOOOO stumped! Can anyone help?
I have a logo, designed in Illustrator. It uses two flat spot colors (A pantone color and a Toyo color). The PMS color is a very bright, almost neon, peachy orange. (PMS 178 M). I need to create a version of this logo for the web that looks as color-accurate as possible to the designer's original intent.
When I "save for web and devices" in AI, the color (in both the "original" and "optimized" views) goes very pink or very dull taupe-y, no matter what GIF, JPG or PNG settings I try. When I use the SWF setting, the color fidelity is pretty good, but I'm wary of providing the client a SWF file for general use where they'd usually use a GIF or JPG. (though this might ultimately be the best answer).
I've tried tweaking the color in AI, using different color models, proofing it in different ways, etc. No matter what I do, I always get web-gamut warnings that offer me no reasonable options.
There's definitely no "web safe" color that is anything like this color. But, I thought you didn't have to be "web safe" (i.e. the 216 or 256 specific colors) anymore. Shouldn't I be able to simulate this with something like #FF8875? Why won't AI save it that way? Are there colors that browsers just can't get anywhere near in a GIF but they can in a SWF file? I thought at least some browsers (like Safari) were "color-managed". I am SO confused.
Any advice, explanation, etc. would be gratefully accepted!

no, browser color does not have limits that Flash color lacks. You don't have your color management set up right for web design.
It's impossible to know exactly what you are doing wrong, but the fairly standard naive approach to this is to work in Adobe RGB instead of sRGB, and to have your Mac monitor set to 1.8 gamma. Either of these of these guarantee color mismatches when you strip the profile, view in a non-color managed browser, or look at the image anywhere outside color management.
Recalibrate/profile your monitor with a 2.2 gamma
Set your RGB working space to sRGB.
NOW, you can choose your hex color to match your PMS or Toyo color.
Whether you tag your images or not depends upon your specific use of the image.

Satellite U400 - the webcam does not work anymore

Hello guys here is my sudden probloema!
About a year ago I purchased a laptop
TOSHIBA - Satellite U400
with s.o. WinVista 32bit and with integrated webcam chicony etc. ....
For a year, everything worked correctly, but for some days now, the webcam does not work anymore.
As soon as I try to open it, a message of management software cam that says "Webcam driver open fail, please restart or computer room"
I tried to do it all: aggioronato and downloaded the drivers from toshiba, uninstalled the program and re installed the webcam ....! updated bios notebook ....! useless!
the strange thing .. well that going into device manager ... the webcam is not there ....! but if the launch seems to open just then check quell caz ... Warning!!

Are you familiar and comfortable with LINUX LIVE bootable discs to load an alternative operating system with unobtrusive but extensive Toshiba device support so you can determine if your webcam hardware is ruined or if the problem is software and possibly solved reinstalling Windows ?
At this point, you're pondering less time consuming but more expensive choices such as buying another web cam, or another computer and you might be temporarily borrowing someone else's web cam / using a non preferred spare web cam that isn't optimal for your needs.
Continuously downloading software, registry cleaners, and repeatedly reinstalling drivers will eventually ruin your Windows installation and consume more time than you've wasted so far and still doesn't guarantee to fix your malfunction.

SSL VPN message "This (client) machine does not have the web access privilege."

I am trying to configure the SSL VPN (WebVPN) and I am almost done but when clicking on the URL's I configured in the bookmarks, I get the message "This (client) machine does not have the web access privilege. Please contact your SSLVPN provider for assistance." I looked through the many tutorials and guides in existence and none talks about such error and the fix for it. In fact, if I search the net for this error message I get only one match, in the Cisco website, where is say that "The client computer does not meet the security criteria of having web access functionality through the SSL VPN gateway." and as fix it gave this tip "Check the URL to the gateway or contact the administrator if it persists." So, nothing on the website about what this issue is and how to fix it. I will provide my IOS configuration and hopefully someone will spot the issue. Here it goes:

I can not delete my history and adding new bookmarks. Upgrading to later Firefox versions and/or re-installing didn't help. The address bar still shows the web addresses of old and whenever I make new bookmarks, it's always gone as if it was never made.

Also, I have noticed that every once in awhile you can not close tabs you've opened, either by pushing on the X button and/or clicking on the mouse to close it. Although closing the window and opening it again (without closing the Firefox application) seemed to rectify the problem in the short term, it's becoming quite annoying.

First, download the add-on SQManager. This should be included with FireFox, it is really good.
Look for the file '''moz_hosts''' in the folder '''places.sqlite'''.
Don't delete the file, just delete the information in the file. My file has over 3600 websites, which go back years!! I did not know they were there, but I was frustrated about not being able to get rid of them. They popped up every time I used the address bar. Clearing my history would not get rid of them.
This is where they are stored!! I found that by deleting the pesky web site from '''moz_hosts''', it does not appear in my address bar anymore!!!
I think that if I just delete all the websites in moz_hosts....

As long as you don't delete the file, just empty it, FireFox won't know the difference. It will just keep adding websites to it until you empty it again.
Why running "clear recent history" doesn't do this, I don't know. You are doing manually what "clear recent history" is not doing.
Please tell me if you see any flaw in this.

Adobe 8 - Unexpected Corrupt or incorrect file type warning when viewing a PDF file from the Web

Hi,
On downloading a PDF file from my web site using Adobe 8 on the client machine I expect the file to open automatically however I receive encounter the "File Download" dialog. It has the following warning message: "The file you are downloading cannot be opened by the default program. It is either corrupted or it has an incorrect file type. As a security precaution, it is recommended that you cancel the download."
This issue did not occur within previously tested versions of Adobe Reader (e.g. Version 5.1).
On investigating the issue I discovered the factor that results in Adobe 8 failing to open the file automatically is the Content-Type = "application/pdf; Charset=utf-8". However, if I intercept the response and alter the Content-Type to contain only "application/pdf;" the issue on Adobe 8 does not occur.
I have even tested when the Content-Type contains an empty Charset (i.e. "application/pdf; Charset=") but this issue still occurs. In addition setting the Charset to other encodings (e.g. "ISO-LATIN-7", "iso-8859-1") the issue occurs.
QUESTION(s):
1. Why is it necessary for Adobe 8 when opening PDF files from the web to expect no Charset within the Content-Type?
2. If this was not an issue within previous versions of Adobe surly this is a bug?
Since I cannot ensure that the Response's Content-Type does not contain a Charset at all please can someone suggest either a work-around or more importantly a solution to the issue?
Please Note:-
1. Within Adobe, Edit -> Preferences -> Internet option it's compulsory for our users to have "Display PDF in browser" ticked!
2. We cannot prevent a Charset from being present within the Content-Type of the response sent to the client, hence this issue.

This is exactly the same behavior I observed when I rendered a PDF stored in a database through a .NET page. If I chose to save it, it would open fine after the save, but if I chose to open it in the browser without saving it, I would get the error.
The problem was not with the PDF or Acrobat. It was with the way I was delivering the PDF. Putting the following code before my binarywrite fixed the issue completely:
Response.ClearHeaders()
Response.ClearContent()
Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream"
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=" + saveFilename)
where saveFileName is the name you want to give the PDF.
You can use 'inline' instead of 'attachment' above if you just want the PDF to open (no option to save first). You can also use 'pdf' instead of 'octet-stream' (not sure the difference).
The trouble seems to be that .NET puts some info in the header and/or content by default prior to anything your code says to write. If you don't clear this, IE has an issue with it. Other browsers seem to ignore it.
Bottomline is that this is an issue the website programmer needs to fix and is not something the user can fix by changing some setting(s).

actually I have created a project in Eclipse WTP and I am running it from remote server. Its giving me 404 error when I tried to run it.
I know 404 error is generally due to some error in deployment descriptor. what's the url you've put.

My question is, it is necessary to include the above lines between <servlet> and ></servlet->mapping> in web.xmlSo now you think whether you need something inside <servlet>and </servlet-mapping>

Structure inDesign document and export as XML for use in the web

I just recently started using inDesign and I am fascinated by its possibilities! I use it for a project where a finished inDesign layout that is used for a printed publication is now supposed to be transformed for implementing it on a web site. My job is to export the inDesign document as an XML file. After massive reading the last weeks I'm quite familiar with the structuring and tagging in inDesign. Though there's some issues I do not understand. Your precious advice would be of highest meaning to me
The programmer who will later use my XML output for the web-transformation needs the document structured in different levels like "Root > Chapter > Subchapter > Text passage / table". I already structured the document with tags like title, text passage, table, infobox,... but the structure is just linear, putting one item following to another.
How can I structure the document with reoccuring tags that enable me to identify the exact position of an item in the document's structure? So that I can say for example "text passage X" is located in chapter 4, subchapter 1. This has to be done because the document is supposed to be updated later on. So maybe a chapter gets modified and has to be replaced, but this replacement is supposed to be displayed.
I hope my problem becomes clear! That's my biggest issue for now. So for any help I'd be very thankful!

Our print publications are created in InDesign CS5 for Mac then the text is exported to RTF files then sent to an outside company to be converted to our XML specifications for use by our website developers. I would like to create a workflow in which our XML tags are included in the InDesign layouts and then export the XML from the layouts.
Some more detail about what kind of formatting is necessary might be helpful.
I know that IDML files contain the entire layout in XML format. Is it a good idea to extract what we need from IDML, using the already-assigned tags?
Well, if you want to export the whole document, it's the only reasonable approach.
We use a workflow system such that each story is a seperate InCopy document, stored in ICML format (Basically a subset of IDML). Our web automation uses XSLT to convert each story into HTML for use on our web site; it also matches it up with external metadata so it knows what is a headline and what is not, etc.. It is not exactly hassle free, and every once in a while someone uses a new InDesign feature that breaks things (e.g., our XSLT has no support for paragraph numbering, so numbered paragraphs show up without their numbers).
You could do the same thing with with IDML, you'd just have to pick out each story, but that's small potatoes compared to all the XSL work you're going to have to do.
On the other hand, there may be better approaches if you're not going to export the whole document. For instance, you could use scripting to export each story as an RTF file, and then you could convert the RTF files into HTML using other tools.

I can't type in the web address in the address bar. I have to open a new tab to do it.

I just upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7. I reinstalled firefox, added the speeddial that I liked so much, and then tried to use firefox. I can't type the web address into the address bar when I start firefox. I always have to open a new tab before it'll let me do it. Also, I can't highlight and copy what's typed there - AND I can't "paste and go" anymore. Is that open gone?

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

Using Aperture to proof for the web

Hi friends,
I work with photos almost exclusively to publish on the web. I was hoping to use Aperture to speed up my workflow without taking every image through Photoshop. However, it appears to me that Aperture doesn't do much to successfully proof for browser display. I'm wondering if anyone can correct me.
Normally, in order to get an idea of how washed-out images will look on the web after being saved out as sRGB, I soft-proof for "Monitor RGB" using Photoshop, and edit accordingly. My hope was that I could use Aperture's 2-up view to compare the original image, without media proofing, to an adjusted image with soft proofing on and set to something like Monitor (so as to try and get the web-bound image close to how it looked out of the camera, plus desired adjustments). However, enabling proofing in Aperture, using all sorts of different profiles, doesn't seem to perceptibly change the image at all.
Naturally, photo representation is far from reliable on different browsers and different monitors, however I have found for my purposes that working under soft proofed conditions provides the most predictable result. Would anymore be willing to share their Aperture workflow for getting images onto the web without too much degradation?

My monitor is calibrated. My workflow consists of:
Export to JPEG/SRGB and upload to web. Seriously, I've never noticed any noticeable color shift. And if you're "presenting" on the web, it's a crap shoot anyway unless you are guaranteeing everyone viewing the photos will be viewing on a calibrated monitor.
Aperture's proofing does shift colors if you use a target that is a print target (e.g. when I use a profile for my Epson 3800 Premium Luster paper, there is a noticeable blue to purple shift). With some extreme output targets, you can get definite posterization as well. It does something, but I don't know if for "sRGB" it's going to make that large of a perceptible difference.

Is the Web 216 Palette Necessary Anymore?
