Is the wifi receiver of an Airport express stronger than IPhone?

Hi
I am about to purchase an airport in order to extend my wifi connection. But first I would like to check the strength of the wifi signal I'm going to receive in the location of the future AX. But how is the wifi received in the AX ? Stronger than an iPhone or is it more like a laptop ?

And I don't see why it shouldn't work... I have two signal bars in my room.
It should work OK, But, I learned long ago that things that "should" work often don't. You won't know until you try. That's why I suggested that you understand your options before you buy.
The wonderful thing about using an Ethernet cable is that you can run the cable up to 100 meters with no signal loss.
Ethernet powerline adapters are "iffy". This is another case where you cannot predict results in advance due to the complexities of sending a signal over the AC powerlines.

  • Devices not connecting to the "extended wifi" (i.e. Airport Express)

    Hi,
Let me quickly describe my network setup. Attached to a Motorola cable modem (TWC) is an Airport Extreme (upstairs), firmware 7.6.4, to create a wireless network. Then, downstairs, to extend the network I have 3 Airport Express' (same firmware), all set to "Extend a wireless network". I should also add that while I don't exactly know when they were manufactured, my Airport Extreme is the dual-band version, and I believe so are all my Airport Extremes. I juse Airport Utility 6.3.2. All seems to be working just fine - all green lines, no warnings or errors.
When I look at my different devices and check which Airport they are connected to - I use the Airport Utility to check - here's what I find:
    - Connected to the Airport Extreme are a total 7 devices, including a Mac, iPhone 4S, iPad and (cough) an Android tablet;
    - Connected to the first Airport Express are 2 devices - another iPad and an Apple TV
    - Connected to the other 2 Airport Expresses are connected... nothing.
Here's the thing: some of my devices get a pretty lousy signal (e.g. my phone downstairs). I would expect them to connect to one of the Airport Express downstairs - hey, I'm even in the same room! But even if I shut down and reboot the phone, it will connect to the Airport Express upstairs (which yield a weak signal). Same for my Macbook. So my internet on some devices is really quite slow, despite having enough wireless devices to power a whole neighborhood....
Any idea what could be behind this? Or is this "normal behavior"? As said, everything is working without error, I just suspect that the speed is suffering more than it should.
Thoughts, help or comments would be appreciated,
    Phili

Yes, it is cumbersone over the internet.
What version of Airport Express units do you have ?
The 1st generation "n" or the newer 2nd generation that is the current model ?
    1st generation
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB321LL/A/refurbished-airport-express-base-sta tion-with-80211n-and-airtunes
    2nd generation
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC414LL/A/airport-express-base-station-june-20 12
The 1st generation is NOT simultaneous Dual band. It will only do 2.4 or 5 GHz at a time.
I went through this before with my older versions. (not the old 'g' version though at this time)
Some of my devices would only connect to the main base station because they wanted 2.4 GHz but that band on the Express was already being used by a 5 GHz device.
A few weeks ago I finally replaced the 'n' version with the newest version which has "Simultaneous" dual bands.
Now everything works the way I want it to.
Just throwing some ideas out for you to think about.

  • Is it possible to print from Windows 8.1 to a printer connected to the USB port on an Airport Express?

Is it possible to print from Windows 8.1 to a printer connected to the USB port on an Airport Express?
    a) HP printer with USB port only (no ethernet port) connected to Airport Express
    b) No issue printing from Macs
    Tests
    1) Installed Bonjour 2 - does not find printer (now uninstalled)
    2) Bonjour 3 is listed in programs but no way to access
    3) Using TCPIP address (and no Bonjour) gives 'Unsupported Personality' error when printing test page
    Regards
    Richard
p.s. why are all Windows 8.1 questios n the forum 'Locked' with no reply?

This is possible, but not with Bonjour or any other fixes.  It is just a printer set up based on the Port name of the Airport, 10.0.1.1.
I found the answer on YouTube, Title: Windows Printing For Apple AirPort Extreme without Bonjour Wireless wifi.

  • I just purchased a wireless connection for my Tivo but the signal strength from my airport express does not allow the tivo to load data. How do I increase the signal strength?

I just purchased a wireless N network adapter for the TIVO premier and am trying to use my apple airport express to connectand it  is in the another room. I am only receiving one  bar of strength on my network adapter. How can I raise the signal strength of my airport express.

There are several things that might help, not all of which would be feasible depending on your situation:  (1) Move the TiVo unit and AirPort Express closer together.  (2) Use another AirPort Express to "extend" the network of the first AirPort Express.  Put the second AirPort Express half way between the first AirPort Express and the TiVo unit.  (3) In the general case, Power-Line equipment might allow the TiVo unit to get a good signal, but it's likely that the Ethernet port of your AirPort Express is probably connected to your broadband modem, so that solution wouldn't work for you.  (4) Changing the band or channel that the AirPort Express is using might help.  If the TiVo unit is connection on the 5 GHz band, try one of the three-digit channels, which are allowed to use higher power.

  • I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is flashing and so it is not being recognized.  I have been on the computer and gone to airport utility and it is simply not showing up at all.  What can I do?

I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is blinking.  When I go to utilities and try to find the airport express it does not show up.
    What should I do?

Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.
    See http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/

  • Is it possible to plug in an external HDD to the USB connection on my Airport Express for backups?

Is it possible to plug in an external HDD to the USB connection on my Airport Express for backups? As a kind of cheapo Time Capsule?

Unfortunately no, because the USB port on the AirPort Express will only work with a printer and a Keyapan remote control. Hard drives are not supported.
You would need an AirPort Extreme for that type of functionality.

  • How can I determine what dns server the wifi client use within airport

How can I determine what dns server the wifi client use within airport
I want to use dns servers other then the one that airport extreme is using. For example I got the 172.16.1.1 (the default gateway - airport extreme), but I want to use the office dns servers, that are in a 10.x.x.x range.
    Is there a possibility?
    Thanks and happy eastern

The Airport Extreme uses the DNS servers assigned by the network that it connects to. Is you Airport Extreme on the 10.x.x.x network? if it is then you are already using the 10.x.x.x DNS servers. Check your Airport Extreme with the Airport Utility and you will see in the Internet tab, the DNS servers used. The devices connecting to the Airport Extreme are assigned a DNS address of the Airport Extremes IP, In your case 172.16.1.1 but all DNS searches and resolution are done with the DNS servers you see in the Airport Extreme.
If you want to use some other DNS then you can override in the Airport Extreme which will be used by all devices connecting too the Airport Extreme, Or you can edit the DNS address in each devices wireless settings.

  • How to extend the range with a second Airport Express? Do I need a DSL cable?

How to extend the range with a second Airport Express? Do I need a DSL cable?

Thanks, now we need a bit more information, please, in order to provide you with the correct information that you need.
I assume that you already have one AirPort Express.....either a model A1264 or A1392.....set up and operating OK, is that correct?
If yes, you can extend the network either by using wireless or an Ethernet cable with a second AirPort Express.....either the A1264 or A1392 model. A wired connection is the way to go, if possible, since it provides better performance.  But, wireless might work OK for you if you want to try that.
Let us know "how" you want to extend......wireless or wired?

Configuring the time capsule airport wlan function as "connect to wlan", the time capsule gets a correct IP adress from the other wlans IP range, but does not assign this to the ethernet ports. With Airport express it worked, the single Ethernet port got the IP Parameters passed through!
My setup is a Vodafon Esaybox connected to ISP. Time Capsule is not able to extend the wlan of the easybox, neither airport express can do.
Only the option "connect to wlan" is succesful.
With airport express I was able to connect my Sony Bravia TV to the lan via ethernet to stream pictures, the TV set got an IP adress from the easybox.
With the time capsule the easybox dosn't find devices connected to the ethernet ports to submit IP adresses. The TV set get another IP adress (169.xxx.x.x.) in subnet mask 255.255.0.0 and I don not now where from.
My notebook is a MacBook pro.
    Any idea????
    Thank a lot in advance!
    Kind regards
    Ingo

Neverthe less, could there be the chance, that this feature could be implemnented with an firmware update?
That would appear to be a question for Apple to answer. You can make suggestions to Apple here:
Apple - AirPort Extreme - Feedback
If the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule are configured to "extend a wireless network" they will provide additional wireless coverage....and...the Ethernet ports are enabled in this type of setup.
The "catch" here is that you must have an Apple router providing the network to be extended.

  • HT3291 Does this work when listening to radio direct on apple TV? I would like to able to play the radio on apple TV & airport express at the same time.

Does this work when listening to radio direct on apple TV? I would like to able to play the radio on apple TV & airport express at the same time.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
No, this doesn't work directly from the Apple TV. However if you play the radio station from your computer you can send it via airplay to both devices, thereby achieving what you require.
