Is there a best rip setting for multiple devices?

I want to start converting my DVD library to computer files so I can import into iTunes and then access it anywhere. I bought a program called Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate Mac which offers a TON of settings choices. I did this with all my CDs years ago but it was easy. I set everything at 192 MP3 and can listen on anything. But for video it seems more complicated. So for devices where I might watch, I have:
iPhone4
iPad orginal,
AppleTV 2 and
Samsung 55" LED TV through home theater
BTW, I'm using a Mac Pro, 8 GBs RAM and lots of drives space, running OSX 10.6.8, but will be migrating to Lion and iCloud later this week.
In reading Wondershare's many output settings choices, I'm wondering if I need to output multiple file versions like:
MP4 for my iPad or iPhone
M4V for my AppleTV and ultimately my 55" TV
And then there's the question of resolution. The default for either their MP4 or M4V is: 1280 x 720
Is that high enough quality if I WiFi stream from iTunes > AppleTV > 55" TV?  Or do I need to set the resolution to Wondershare's highest setting: 1920 x 1080 for best quality. And if the answer is yes, go higher, if I want to watch on my iPad or even iPhone, how will 1920 x 1080 work out? Does the device downsize or something and able to play a larger resolution file?
So given the range of devices that I might watch, is it possible to create one output file based on one "one size fits all" type setting that will work on all my potential applications/devices?
Can AppleTV handle MP4 files even though Wondershare specifies M4V if you choose their setting AppleTV for your output device and visa versa with M4V for iPads and iPhones?
Lastly, I have no clue what the settings are in my original DVDs. Maybe I can see this in Wondershare. I'll look. But if the original is 1280x720 and I set my rip resolution to 1920x1080 will I end up with less quality because I'm converting upward from the resolution of the original?
If my large screen TV requires 1920 x 1080 for best quality and I'm playing a video that is 1280 x 720 on it, then I assume the TV resamples it (is that the word?) and upscales it to whatever resolution it runs at? If so, where is the best place to create the higher/larger resolution? At the rip stage or in viewing stage on the fly done by the TV?
So much to learn.... I hate being a newbee. but hopefully this will be a helpful thread for others in the same boat as we all look toward digitizing our lives
Thanks,
Steven

  • What is the best way to set up multiple devices in the same household?

Our family has a bunch of devices (phones, pads, pods) all set up under the same appleID.  The idea was to be able to share iTunes content among devices.  The problem is that there is personalized data merging between devices (address book, apps, etc).  Is there a way to set up multiple devices under the same account while maintaining their own identity so that Each user can have their own apps, addresses, etc without having to sift through everyone else's stuff?

Continue to share your iTunes ID, but use different IDs for other services such as FaceTime, iMessage and iCloud.  (When you share the same iCloud account across multiple devices, any synced data is merged and the merged list appears on all devices sharing the account.)
    To change the ID For:
iMessage, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive (Receive At in iOS 5), tap the ID sign out, sign back in using the other ID.
FaceTime, do the same thing in Settings>FaceTime.
iCloud, you'll have to delete the account, create a new account with the other ID, and migrate your data to the new account.  Before deleting the account, if you have any photos in photo stream that are not in your camera roll or backed up somewhere else save these to your camera roll or you will lose them.  To do this, open the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tap Edit, tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share, then tap Save to Camera Roll.  Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On [iDevice].  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.  Finally, to un-merge the data you will then have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want in each account (such as deleting the other person's contacts from your account, and vice versa).

  • Best Ripping software for Apple TV

What is the best ripping software for Apple TV. I had Handbrake that I've used to rip DVDs to put into iTunes. Right now I don't have ATV but I will be getting it soon. Should this do the trick? or is there a better program that has better results?

I've used the AppleTV setting to rip/convert a bunch of movies, and they look pretty great. The default setting is 2500 for Apple TV in Handbrake. If you watch a lot of foreign movies like I do, remember to check the audio & sub-title sections, to make sure they're set correctly, or you'll have a lot of movies that have the director giving his commentary! (I learned that the hard way, and had to re-convert about 15 movies!)

  • What is the best Compressor setting for best quality video playback on an iBook g4?

I know the iBook and G4's in general are very outdated today, but I need to ask anyways. I have some video projects in 720p and 1080p in which I have down converted to 480p and also exported to MPEG-2 for DVD (personal wedding videos and videos made for my clients using Final Cut Studio). Anything encoded at most resolutions using h264 won't play on my iBook. Even 480p.
I have about 20 hours of mixed video content that I need it in a format that is suitable for an iPhone 4 and an iBook 12" with a 1.2GHz G4, 1.25GB RAM and I added a 250 WD 5400 IDE hard disk (running 10.5.8 and 10.4.11 for Classic Mode). I know the iBook doesn't seem like the best tool for modern video playback, but I need to figure out which setting will play best with iPhone 4 and iBook so I don't need to make 2 local copies of each video for each device.
The iBook plays best with the original DVD output MPEG-2 file and playing back in QT Pro or VLC... but I already have 180 GB's of MPEG-2 files now and my little HD is almost full. I don't have enough room to convert all the iPhone 4 counterparts. If I use Compressor 3.5.3, what is the optimal setting for iBook and iPhone .m4v or .mp4 files that can play on both devices? So far 720x400-480 widescreen videos @ 29fps works great on my iPhone, Apple TV 2, and other computers but seems to murder my poor iBook if encoded with high profile (and still choppy on simple profiles). 640x480 (adding black matte bars to my videos) plays fine in MPEG-2 but drops frames or goes to black screen if I convert it to mp4 (and looks bad on the iPhone 4 because of the matte). But if I convert on any of the simple profiles, it looks terrible on my iPhone 4 and a blocky on the iBook.
This is the problem leading me to having 2 copies of each video and eating my hard disk space. What is the best video setting for both playback on the iBook and iPhone 4? Can the iBook playback H264 at all in decent resolutionsat all? I don't really want to have a 480p .m4v collection for the iPhone 4 and a MPEG-2 RAW collection just to play the same videos on the iBook.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
    Is there an easier way?

  • What is best network setting for jetpack mifi 5510l

I live in a rural area with poor signal.  No 4G and limited 3G.  We got an antenna that boosts phones from nothing or 1X one bar to 3G and 2-3 bars inside the house.  What is the best network setting for jetpack?  It doesn't seem to work as well.
Automatic and 4g don't work.  I don't know what CDMA Auto or EDVO stand for.
Any suggestions for improving strength would be appreciated.  I know I won't get a great connection but a steady connection sure would be great.

    > What is the best network setting for jetpack?
Not sure what you mean.  The jetpack will automatically configure itself to whatever signal it currently has access to.  Shouldn't have to configure any network settings.
    > I don't know what CDMA Auto or EDVO stand for.
Those are the old 3G networks.
    > Any suggestions for improving strength would be appreciated.
Perform what is known as a Site Survey and evaluate your current environment:
    http://3gstore.com/page/13_will_an_antenna_help_me.html
After you generate some numbers then look up what they mean in the Interpret the Results tab.  You mentioned that you already purchased an antenna so there may not be anything else you can do as the local towers in your area are not good enough to reach inside your home.

I have one apple ID for multiple devices in my family.  I'd like to keep it that way for itunes/app purchases.  I would like a simple step 1, step 2, step 3 response on what I need to do to separate all other features like imessage, contacts, emails, etc.
I have been reasearching how to do this on the internet, but I haven't found an easy explanation yet.  My family is going crazy over each others imessages being sent to others in the family and not being able to use FaceTime because of conflicting email addresses.  I have read that if each person gets their own iCloud account, this would work.  However, I need to know what to do after I set everyone up with their own iCloud account.  Do I make that the default email address to be contacted or can they still use their hotmail email addresses.  Any help- with easy explanation- would be much appreciated!!

We do this in my family now.  We have one account for purchases, so it is used to share music and apps (I think that is in Settings/iTunes & App Stores).  Each iDevice has this configured.
Then, each of us has our own iCloud account that is configured under Settings/iCloud.  That then allows us to have our own Mail/Contacts/Calendars/Reminders/Safari Bookmarks/Notes/Passbook/Photo Stream/Documents & Data/Find My iPhone/and Backup.  That Backup piece is pretty sweet and comes in handly if you replace your iDevice.  You can just restore from it.
So we all share the Apple Store account but we all have our own iCloud accounts to keep the rest seperate or things like you mentioned are a nightmare.
In answer to what iCloud does for you: http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/
Think of it as an internet based ("cloud") area for all of those items listed in my response.  What you need to remember is photo stream only maintans the last 1000 pictures so don't count it as a complete backup solution for your pictures.  Even though I rarely sync with a computer these days, I do still try to sync my phone with iPhoto (I have an iMac) so that I have copies of all of my pictures.  1000 may not stretch as far as it sounds.

  • Can I use the same Apple ID for multiple devices

Can I use the same Apple ID for multiple devices?

Yes. Up to five devices can be authorized on a single computer using the same Apple ID. You can also use the same Apple ID on multiple devices is they are all going to use the same iTunes Library by the same user. But it's ill-advised if multiple users are involved who wish to keep their devices separate from the devices belonging to other users.
How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer
Using More than One iDevice on the Same Computer
This applies mainly to couples who are adding another device and do not want their email, messages, etc. being duplicated on both devices. To begin read: How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer. You need to establish a separate Apple ID and password for whomever will use the new iDevice. See Apple - My Apple ID and Frequently asked questions about Apple ID. The easiest way is to do this on the computer using iTunes: iTunes- How to set up an Apple ID within iTunes.
On the computer create a new user account for the person with the new iDevice. This will be the user account that person will always use. He/She will no longer use the other user account. This way that person will have a separate iTunes Library
Start by transferring the new device(s) to a new account along with all your data.  Save any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless they are already in the camera roll) by opening your Photos app, tap on Albums icon at the bottom. Now, tap on My Photo Stream album; tap Select; tap on the photos you want to select;, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow) in the lower left corner; then tap Save to Camera Roll.
If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep then you need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself. Later you can copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.
Tap on Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud; the person keeping the current account will not be affected,) provide the password to turn off Find My Phone and choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Sign in with a different Apple ID to create your new account. Choose Merge to upload your data.
Once you are on separate accounts, you can each go to icloud.com and delete the other person's data from your account.
Note: The essence of the above was created by user, randers4. I
have made substantial changes to improve readability and syntax.

Time Capsule only works for one device at a time, how to make it capable to be used for multiple devices at times.
Please help to set it up, thanks in advance

You need to give more info..
Firstly only works for what.. networking.. backup.. wireless. You need more nouns.. more adjectives... describe what you want and what fails.. then we can figure out why.
Most likely you have bridged it when it should be in router mode..
Most likely you are using Lion or ML which has the airport utility bridge the TC by default.
Change it to working as a router. That might help.
If you press reset button it will default back to router btw.
If you are on Lion.. use a real utility. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1547

I have been use the same apple id for multiple devices (both are iPhones running iOS 6 - one is a 4, the other a 4S.) I'd like to sync separate content for each device using the same instance of iTunes (iTunes V 10.7 installed on MacBook running OS X 10.6.8.) Can I assign the second device a separate apple id in odrer to differentiate the content? Thanks for your assistance!

No, a second Apple ID will not work. iTunes can already tell them apart.
When you connect the first iPhone to iTunes, check and uncheck the things you want and Sync.
