Is there a better Cross Dissolve method and associated problem?

I have been using Cross Dissolve for some time now. I have searched and reviewed cross dissolve help in the forum without so far finding better information or a solution.
My method:
- razor at the point to be dissolved
- drag the Cross Dissolve to the razor point
- click the dissolve to select the length required
- razor each end of the dissolve length
- right click each razored section with a ripple delete
- reapply the cross dissolve and reselect the length
I find this works for me but could be simpler. I ripple delete the razored sections because if I do not, the cross dissolves overlap previous sections prior and after the selected clips in the whole video sequence such that the effect appears not to work. Ripple deleting ensures that the previous sections are within the selected clips. There has to be a faster way.
My problem:
This happens after many successful cross dissolves in a Project as though I have run out of allowable times it can be used. When I try to ripple delete the razored sections, the ripple delete does not work no matter what I do.
What can I do better or correctly to cross dissolve and how can I deal with untimely failed ripple deletes?

I was not implying anything about your "experience" or otherwise although your method did actualy indicate a lack of editing experience..
It was you that asked for a more simpler, faster way to do one of the most fundamental editing functions. A cross dissolve.

I do not know how or why you developed the method you described...

but it certainly is unique ....if somewhat cumbersome and time consuming.
I only offered the advice that lead you to a "simpler , faster " way of doing a very simple function.
Your post number 4. Yes you have misinterpreted that setting.
Stephen kind of unintentionally mislead you by using the term Pre and Post roll when he should have said " handles". (ie edit the clip knowing you have additional frames either end to create a fade from.

Is there a better way to edit and create a Page Size list for InDeisgn CC 2014?

I have about 65 iMac machines I'm responsible for at a publishing company. The users need a specific custom Page Size list to display when setting up a new document. It's a very long list of sizes for various products. The only way I know how to edit this size list is to open the .xml file in Dreamweaver and edit the code. I would like to know if there is a better way to do this for InDesign CC 2014. At the moment I have to take this one file and install individually on all users accounts on all 65 machines. Here is the path of the file I edit by hand: Mac HD/Users/(User Account)/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 10.0/en_US/Pages Sizes/New Page Sizes.xml

There is no special folder for templates. You just put them where it makes sense to you, and you access the same way you would open any existing file.
The only functional difference between a template (.indt) and document (.indd) file is the default opening behavior. By default templates open as untitled copies and documents open as originals. You can change from one to the other just by changing the file extension.
The advantage of using a template over a document size preset is the preset only defines a page size. The template can include multiple pages, multiple master pages, styles you want to use, objects already in place, etc. And the use of a template removes the temptation to "recycle" an old issue of a recurring project. Starting each issue fresh from a known clean template reduces the risk of accumulated minor corruption that can eventually cause a fatal problem.

is this the best way to do this? i am basically login in the user and then setting a timer through that program. Everything actually works but the UNIX command doesn't seem like it ever finishes. I've been searching on the internet about scripts waiting for output results or something like that and that is why it might be hanging....but i haven't found anything concrete that is relevant to my sitaution.

i am got your unix command to work about changing the password but then i get this funky popup before lion logins in asking me if i want to change the keychain....i don't want that popping up everytime so i don't think i'm going to go that route....
also....i should mention that Ugandans are beginners when it comes to computers.....i feel safe in making that generlization because even the ones that i meet who get degrees in "IT" are good in theory but barely know how to defrag a windows machine (i'm not exagerrating)....
also i think the setup i have is good and i wouldn't want someone to come up with their own password and then enter that.....like i said before people here are just learning so i have to take as much off of them using the computer (or at least getting start) as possible.....remotely logging them in and then even with the web account i have setup on the client computers (if they pay for web access) it launches safari for them so they can start to browse.....
but your work around for enterting the time in the menubar countdown is perfect because it is a great workaround for scripting a bunch of delays and keystrokes....PERFECT!
two remaining things....is there anyway i can combine all that i need into a single unix command?
- logins in the user (the code i posted above)
- modifies the plist files of menubar to enter the correct time
- then launches an applescript (bundled into an application i'm assuming) that launches menubar countdown and pushes enter....
if i could figure that out (with your help) that would be the holy grail for me!
i also tried your PHP-script and it says that it can't connect even though i have the correct IP address of the machine (the one that is showing up in ARD and i know that works)....btw i have assigned statis IP address to all clients if that matters.....
i really appreciate it!

I've never actually done this, but don't think it will work for the purpose of running a task in a regular app like Synk Pro. Launching Synk Pro - even, I would think, from a logout script - will cancel logout. Of course, if Ham1000 is willing and able, he could probably replace Synk Pro with a call to rsync from a logout script:

Dock won't load, and associated problems

I'm having some severe problems with my mac at the moment, and I've no idea how to even start fixing things. A while ago, I was browsing the web, when my mac seemed to freeze. My dock and desktop picture both disappeared, and to close down, I had to do a hard restart. Since then, I've not been able to load the dock at all. Finder loads, and the system recognises CDs when I put them in, but I can't load any other programs. If I try, I just get the spinning beach ball, and nothing happens at all. To turn the machine off, I have to use the power button, as nothing responds.
I've not changed any hardware, installed any programs, or changed any settings for a long time before this happened. I've tried to boot from the installer disks, and nothing. Any suggestions?

After inserting the install CD, are you restarting while holding down the C key, as Donald Morgan posted?

Intermittent problem with cross dissolve and chroma key

It seems that in 1 out of 10 videos I produce in Final Cut Pro there is a problem with the cross dissolve effect and chroma key. What happens is that during the cross dissolve, clip A fades out with a green tint and clip B fades in with a green tint.
Today I am working with two videos that I captured using the same work flow on the same day. One project exhibits the tint while the second project does not. If I import the problematic footage into the good project the tint problem follows the footage. In the good footage, the cross dissolve produces a result that does not have a green tint. If I re-capture the "bad" footage the results are the same.
Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone have an idea how to resolve this problem?

In my project, both clips are source clips with Chroma, Color Smoothing and Matte Choker applied. A dissolve from non-chroma clip to chroma clip works fine. Only problem is with two chroma clips. In my dissolve, the error appears as red fringing in the area between the two masks.< </div>
You're using creative shorthand that doesn't help. "Chroma clip" means the clip to which you have applied all of these effects? What masks? Where are you getting the masks?
To understand what's going on with all them itty bitty pixels in a stack of interactive effects, do me a favor: render out a short piece, say 10 seconds of each of your chromaclips as separate movies over transparency using the Animation codec. Reimport them and put them over a solid colored Dissolve between them using different types of dissolves. Post back and tell us (me) what's going on.

It's not a bug. Your pixels are running down a pathway. It's a question of building the correct pathway and having the correct pixel wranglers with the right kinds of cattle prods.

Aligning two cross-dissolved images in Canvas

I have two head-shot photos that are covered by a cross-dissolve. The effect creates sort of a "poor man's" morph between the two faces.
After rendering the sequence, the overlapped images are easily distinguished in the Canvas at the mid point of the dissolve.
However, when I move either image in the Motion tab, in order to better align the facial features from each photo, the Canvas images become double images of themselves and it is impossible to line the two up. Re-rendering makes them clear again until, of course, I move either image.
Is there an easier/better way to reposition images while simultaneously checking their alignment during a cross-dissolve?

I would try a hand-made cross dissolve. Instead of using the standard transition, in your case you have better control if you move either clip to a different video track (say: clip2 to v2), than drag the right hand of clip1 in v1 by say 0,5 sec to the right, and left hand of clip2 in v2 by 0,5 sec to the left. Now the two clips overlap by 1 sec and using the opacity keyframes you can fade down clip1 and fade up clip2 (1 sec each) to emulate cross dissolve.
And now you can play with Motion on either clip without need for rendering (if you HW allows it...)

Problem with Cross Dissolve: The video cuts out during the transistion

I'm encountering a problem with the Cross Dissolve transistion wherein during the period in which the transition should be happening the video instead drops out. There's plenty of heads and tails available on both clips, but as soon as the timeline hits the start of the transition "from' clip cuts out, revealing the background or black if there's no background underneath and then the "go-to" clip cuts in at the end of the transition.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've been having this issue and it's driving me crazy. It's random, that some cross dissolves work, and others don't. Seems to affect AVCHD footage. Adobe seems to be aware of the issue.
The work around that I've seen posted by a forum user "Mitch W" is to apply a GPU accelerated effect to one of the clips in the pair. The effect can be turned to "0" so as not to alter the video. The act of doing this, makes premiere see the clip differently, and render the cross dissolve correctly.
Fast Blur, set to "zero", seems to do the trick, and allows it to work with CUDA acceleration turned on. I did notice that the work around was broken by changing the playback resolution in the viewer window. In that situation, I had to apply the GPU effect to the other clip in the pair to make it work again.
I don't know what will happen if I change my playback resolution again...

PSD with Cross Dissolves look pixelated

At some point recently (last few months) we've found that PSD files that are in FCP will sometimes come out massively pixelated if there is a cross dissolve applied to the beginning of the clip.
I searched and found a person having a similar issue back in January but no answer to his question:

We've tried various setting for the PSD files but the same issues keep happening. We've also exported the sequence in various ways and same issue happens.
Anyone else seeing this problem?

The OP ignored my question about format, pixel dimensions and monitor, so I'm at a loss as to what else could be the problem.
Possibly CMYK rather than RGB, perhaps?
I've never had problems with PSDs since I learned how to preserve transparency.

Cross Dissolve Vanishes

I often fade in or fade out a clip by dropping the cross dissolve transiiton onto the beginning or end of the clip. But in CS5 the transition appears to be on the clip but when I click on something else it disappears. I sometimes have to drop it in 3 times before it "sticks" What's up?

There are several crossed-dissolved transitions with same shot clips and identical plugins which are fine. Checked for plugin updates - I have current version. There was a similar problem in the same project with other two clips and c-d transition. I've fixed is just by shortening the transition duration, so it ended before the bugged frame. And now it shoed up in other location...

Cross dissolve 'stopped' working

For some reason, a few of my dissolve transitions have just stopped working. I can add them into the timeline just fine. But when I try to play them, the effect is not there. The video "jumps" slightly. The dissolves I used previously are still visible though. It's obviously a glitch of some sort. Just wondering if anyone has run into this before.
I really do not want to re-install FCP in this middle of this focus group project. I'm using FCP 5.

Yes Michael, there are enough handles on both sides of the split, which is actually in the middle of the clip. When I double-click the transition in the timeline after I've added it, it still comes up as the default one second in the preview window, whereas if there was not enough clip on either side, it would be less. And since the split is in the middle of a long clip (approx. 15 mins), the handles would definitely not be the issue.
Most of the other transitions seem to work, just the cross dissolve, dither, and one other dissolve (I can't think of it at the moment, and I'm no longer at work to look) are giving me this problem.
They look just like the other transitions I've added previously in the timeline, but they don't show up in the program window. The clip just jumps slightly when the marker moves across the transition.

PPro CS5 multi-cam cross dissolve fail

I'm working on a two camera interview in Production Premium CS5. Did the standard setup -- a source sequence with the two camera feeds, nested into a muiti-cam edit sequence where I pick the angles using the multi-cam monitor. Then I nest this into a target sequence where I slice and dice (to isolate just a part of the interview for a short web video, from a 25 minute interview down to 3 minutes or less).
In the process of making big cuts in my target sequence, I end up with a cut between two clips from the same camera. It's a clearly visible blip in continuity, and I typically use a cross dissolve to acknowledge that. When I apply the cross dissolve, I get a weird failure.
The first half of the dissolve works fine. But at the mid point it picks up *both* underlying camera feeds, not just the one that's actually in use. PPro is clearly going back up the nesting of sequences to get this from the source sequence. But why? And how do I stop it? If this a known bug in CS5, what's the workaround?

OK, tried a cross dissolve at a cut between two clips from the Bcam. Works perfectly. It's a cross dissolve between two Acam cuts that doesn't work. The only difference is where these tracks are located on the source sequence (nearly identical cameras, same AVCHD 1080p30, etc.). Acam is video 2, and Bcam is video 1.
Any ideas why one cross dissolve works and the other fails?

Timeline not working - is there a better way?

First, what I'm trying to accomplish:
I have a div layer the explains how to navigate the ensuing
page.
I want this to display for about 25 seconds and then hide
while the other two divs on the page become visible.
I set up a timeline with three layers and made it
automatically play back.
I made the first layer visible for 25 seconds and then made
it hidden.
The other two divs started hidden and I made them visible
after 25 seconds.
It worked for a while but I went back to fine tune it but the
timeline appeared to be blank. I tried to set it up again but now
things are all screwed up.
Is there a better way to show and hide divs for specific
amounts of time?
Are there tricks to using timelines that I'm missing?

raises some
other questions. If you have to explain to users how to
navigate your
site, isn't that a red flag that there are other more serious
issues?
Like making the site usable? If you still want to display
those DIVs,
not all people read at the same speed. After 25 or whatever
seconds some
people will be bored having to stare at that so long while
others will
not have had enough time to read it. Best to let the user
decide when to
close the DIV. The last thing to note is the Timeline is
pretty awful.
So bad in fact that it is being removed from Dreamweaver CS4.
You might
consider using Flash for "Timeline animations" instead.

What is wrong with Apple. This is the third time during autumn, that I experience problems with icloud. Apparently yesterday once again there was an outage with icloud and the problem was solved, but NO it is not solved. I still can not send e.mails and I am probably not the only one. Each time I talk to a technician from Apple, the only thing they do is to uninstall my icloud and reinstall it again. With no results. A waste of time. Please make your system work and give a better support. Who do I call to get a proper assistance???
And why can I not select icloud under my products??

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
