Is there a BIOS login security feature on the MBP?

One thing, actually the only thing, I liked about my Windows-based laptop (it also had Linux on it too) was that I had a BIOS security feature. This meant that I had to enter a password at the BIOS level before anything would happen. This way there was no getting around the OS to get to my system. Ya, someone could remove the hard drive and get around the windows login, but that's a bit more effort and folks who steal laptops are not usually real high on the IT intelligence level.
Does anyone know of a feature like that on the MBP?
Thanks,
Tom

Here;
Sorry - thought I posted the wrong link.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106482
It says at the bottom not for intel macs, but apparently they fixed this in OS X 10.4.6
Best of luck.

  • There used to be a feature on the 'back' arrow; a small tiny down click arrow where i could choose a specific recent page to go back to. it saves hitting and reloading old pages i want to skip. what can i do now?

at the top left corner of the tool bar, there is a 'back' arrow and a 'forward' arrow. before the latest software upgrade to firefox, i used a teeny tiny 'down' arrow that was to the right of the 'forward' arrow. when i clicked on the tiny 'down' arrow, it showed me a list of all the pages that had recently been opened; not just a website i might have been visiting, but all the pages i had navigated to on that website. i used the 'down' arrow as a shortcut to get back to a specific page which out having to click the 'back' arrow like ten times or more. i would really, really, really like for you to put that feature back, or tell me what i can do instead. thanks.

    You're welcome.

  • Is there a "swipe to navigate" feature on the older Macbook?

I know that there are no multi-touch gestures, but I thought that the two-finger swipe would be available since that is how vertical and horizontal scrolling is handled.
Is there a way to enable the two-finger swipe to navigate back and forth through pages?
    Thanks.

I believe you'd need to add either a Magic TrackPad

  • What is the Iphone 3g Security features?

I lose my Iphone recently and would like to check the security features offered by the upcoming Iphone 3G... I found like insecure in the original Iphone as there is only a "4 digit password" protection before log in. It seems like quite easy to bypass this password and retrieve the info inside the phone? (correct me if I am wrong..) I may seems worse in the 3g version as it can be sync with your Microsoft exchange email (ie. your company email).. Once u lose your phone, your company secret may exposed..
So, is there any additional security features in the new 3g version? I doubt...

I guess someone could come up with the total count for the entire combination of 4 digit numbers and enter each combination of numbers one by one until they hit the passcode, but I don't think this is likely. I guess someone could get lucky and hit the right combination - especially if 0000 or 1224 is used by someone for the passcode, but if someone really wants access and they are so capable, they can find a way - no different from just about anything else.
With ActiveSync, an Exchange Admin will have the capability to perform a remote wipe of an iPhone from the Exchange Server. But I understand even this is possible to be bypassed or prevented by someone who is aware of the capability.

  • Is there a safety assistance feature on the s4?

Hi, I saw on youtube that there is a 'safety assistant' feature on the s4, but don't have it on my phone.
Where can I find that? It's supposed to be at {Settings/My Device/Safety Assistance (under Blocking Mode).
This is a very useful tool in case of emergency or someone trying to hijack or following you.
    Please help.

You may have been watching a video for a S4 on another carrier or from another country.  Not all S4s will be the same across phone carriers and countries.  A US T-mobile Galaxy S4 may have a different menu layout and or features from a US Verizon Galaxy S4.  But I have heard of this feature on the S3.  It may be on the S4 in another place.  good luck.

  • Security Breach on the Ubuntu Forums

So apparently the ubuntu forums got hacked and someone made out with 2 million usernames, passwords and email adresses- ouch! Their site is currently down. Just posting as an FYI because their advice is to change your password if you have an account there and use it for multiple sites.
Ubuntu Forums is down for maintenance
There has been a security breach on the Ubuntu Forums. The Canonical IS team is working hard as we speak to restore normal operations. This page will be updated regularly with progress reports.
    What we know
Unfortunately the attackers have gotten every user's local username, password, and email address from the Ubuntu Forums database.
The passwords are not stored in plain text, they are stored as salted hashes. However, if you were using the same password as your Ubuntu Forums one on another service (such as email), you are strongly encouraged to change the password on the other service ASAP.
Ubuntu One, Launchpad and other Ubuntu/Canonical services are NOT affected by the breach.
    Progress report

2013-07-20 2015UTC: Site taken down, this splash page put in place while investigation continues.

Unfortunately md5 hashes even with salt are easily crackable. On the other hand, it's just a forum account and since they alerted people early, anyone foolish enough to use the same password elseware can change the other password on time.
One thing I disliked is that they haven't alerted people by email, at least I haven't got one yet. I got this information from various source, but many people (dormant accounts / less frequent users) are unlikely to know of it.

  • So why did Apple decide not to put a Kensington Security Slot on the new MBP?

So, I went to the Apple Strore today to prove I wasnt crazy. There is no
Kensington Security Slot on the new MacBook Pro. I work in the Production and Audio Visual Industry and there are times when we need to lock down our walkables MACS. Now at $3,700 maxed out, why in the world Apple leave off a
    Kensington Security Slot?

Rather than insult other users or the names they chose, you might want to re-read my post in which I said that this is a user to user forum. Apple does not comment here. We are not here to do business. We are here to offer technical support, and your question was not one requiring tech support. We simply are not allowed to discuss Apple decisions here.

  • If the iMac is suppose to be secure from viruses, malware, spyware and other internet threats, then howcome i have seen internet security programs for the iMac?

on the website it clearly stated "It’s highly secure and reliable"  and that "You don’t need to buy software to speed it up, keep it safe, or get it to work better."  and it also says that "The built-in defenses on a Mac help keep you safe from viruses and malware without the hassle of constant alerts and sweeps."   If this is the case, then howcome in download .com, i have seen internet security programs for the imac?
So if one day i accidentelly stumble across a website that has malware in it, will the imac protect me?
Theres this website that i feel to afraid to go to because some people reported a malware threat on that website. But will i be able to safely go to that website with the imacs security?
Im just confused that there are these internet security programs for the imac despite of the imacs built in security.

In addition to Kappy's excellent advice, you need to remember that only you can protect yourself (and your Mac) - for instance, I never go near any torrent site. Not only are most torrent downloads illegal, but quite a few softwares on those sites contain some not-so-nice additions (malware, etc). So, no, your Mac would not protect you there - you need to protect yourself; it is called "responsible websurfing".
I only download software from reputable sites (i.e. the developer); I don't go to questionable sites at all (there is a great plugin for Firefox called "WOT" - it grades the sites from excellent to "poor reputation") - if you use Safari, check to see if it is available there. And I don't download "free" software or music or whatever that costs elsewhere - I pay for it.

  • Is there any Security Feature available in any of ...

Dear Everyone, very good day to you all
Just checking for a security feature:
    1. Is there a way to hide my Messages or can I set up a Personal password to prevent access from strangers?
    2. Is there a way to hide my contacts list or can I set a password to prevent access?
This is a basic feature which should be available in a Mobile phone, everybody has some confidential data that cannot be accessed by someone other than the owner of the Mobile. so could someone let me know which Nokia Models support this feature.
This feature is available in all the Samsung Mobiles strarting from the very basic phone and it is known as " Privacy Lock " where we can lock phone book contacts, messages, memory card access, call log etc etc.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jagadeesh Yenduri.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Many Thanks for the swift response, Nokia R&D should concentrate on such simple features, being a Giant in Mobile Market it should understand and concentrate on security too. Everybody needs security and have some important data to hide from others. Hope Nokia Team would read my post and concentrate on such Privacy features.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Jagadeesh  Yenduri.

  • I lost my E 71 phone is there any security feature...

i lost my E 71 phone is there any security feature to get SMS when someone replaces SIM

I don't think there is. Even if there was, it'd be a bit late now as you've already lost the phone.
Some security practices to use for mobile phones:
    - Change the default lock/security code of the phone
    - Change the default PIN and PIN2 codes of the SIM card
    - Make sure the PIN code query is enabled when the phone is started
    - Make sure the setting that requires entering the lock/security code at SIM card change is enabled
    - Enable the autolock feature
    - Put a password on the memory card (so that the card cannot be used in another device)
    - Do not install software (applications/games) on your phone from questionable mobile or web sites
    - Do not install software on your phone, which is sent unsolicited (even if it comes from someone you know)
    - Make frequent backups (or otherwise copy/save any data you don't want to lose)

  • I purchased an iphone 4s secondhand but now i find that the person has a security feature still locked onto the phone and they are not responding to my message. Is there any way to resolve this problem.

How do I resolve an issue with a secondhand phone purchase that has a security feature link to it and it hasnt been removed therefore I cant use the phone.

    Hi paisley,
Sorry, there is no way around the Activation Lock. You either need to contact the original owner and get them to turn off Find My iPhone and wipe the phone from their iCloud account, or you need to return it to the seller.
    Sorry,

  • Just finished update. While in the Tips, why did it tell me I have an old version? Hey there! Looks like you're using an old version of Firefox. Don't miss out on the latest technology & security features. Get the free upgrade in less than a minute.

The top of the screen has an owl like icon & then the following message:
Hey there! Looks like you’re using an old version of Firefox.

Dear Colbabomb; thankyou for your links.
So far, I looked at your first solution, Revo Uninstaller and it gives you a 30 free trial. Ergo, it will eventually cost money so I'm leery of using those kinds of programs in general, meaning most "free trials" have unwanted strings attached and often are big probs to get rid of later. Perhaps you can assure me that it is easy and very user friendly, before I proceed. And I already ran malwarebytes and it found nothing tho the program still can't be uninstalled. I downloaded Adw Cleaner and during the install, my Norton's security popped up and warned that there were (low risk) threats with two of their "other offers" and i hadn't even actually clicked to agree either of them. Nonetheless, Norton warned me against the "lyrics finder" and "deal ply." In fact, there was a box already with an x in it, saying that you are accepting deal ply if you x on "next." Well, except I unchecked that box before clicking on next, yet when it went to fully install, it still showed that it was adding itself; so, just before the install was 100% completed, I had to abort the whole thing. I really do hope your other suggestions are programs that you personally know that they don't try and trick you. But right now, I would not suggest Adw Cleaner to anyone. I even read the fine print about what they will try and install and how to decline and it still tried sticking stuff on that i believed I had declined. Anyways, i have to leave now, shall pick up later this evening, if my pc is still functioning.
