Is there a cheap but reliable place to buy a new battery

I was wondering if there is a cheap yet reliable place to buy a new battery for my iPhone 5.
Any places?

No. Only Apple has legitimate parts, as they do not sell parts to outside companies (except Apple Authorized Service Providers).

I can't say for sure what the indicators of a reputable other source are.  That being said, there are lots of offers out there for batteries that are (take your pick) cheap knockoffs, actually used batteries that show up with many cycles reporting, batteries that do not communicate with the OS or SMU/PMU at all, etc.  There are anecdotal reports of batteries going kerplunk within months of shipping.  So, first make sure that the site is reputable.  Second, scour the web for references to the site to see is there are many "I got taken" posts.  Finally, search this discussion thread for "powerbook battery" and check for the anecdotal information I was referring to.
As I noted above, I have been running an OWC battery for about a year now without a problem and I have had other good dealings with them.  You might ask in this thread if anyone has had good results or bad with a candidate vendor.

    Hello!
They're still being sold in some places: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dsoftware&field-keywo rds=ilife+09&sprefix=iLife+09%2Caps%2C194&rh=n%3A229534%2Ck%3Ailife+09
However, do you absolutely NEED iDVD? There are alternatives, like Burn (free): http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/
I suggest you try it out since it's free. Maybe it'll be enough.

  • My MacBook Pro laptop says 'service battery' and doesn't charge very well but my Mac is 5 years old. Is it worth buying a new battery or do you think I should buy a new mac?

    Hi guys,
I can only leave my MacBook Pro unplugged for an hour maximum and it never seems to fully charge. It says on the Mac to service battery - which I guess means buy a new battery.
I have had my MacBook for over 5 years now and it does get used probably every day, if not every other. If I brought a new battery would it all work normally again or is it getting old and do I need a new one?
Also, my charger seems to be playing up a bit now as well. It's seems to be temperamental when I plug it in and takes to while to light up and charge.  I've attached an image of the battery bit on my laptop as the lead seems to be fine - is this normal?
    Thanks in advance guys.

Is there any application(s) that your current Mac cannot run that only a new can?  Calculate the cost per year of your current MBP and compare that to the cost of a new battery.  Spread the battery cost over a year or two of additional operation, how do the dollar amounts compare?  If the MBP is functioning properly, I generally find it is more cost effective to keep it.
If the retina display and the SSD storage are very desirable from your perspective, then that becomes a different matter.  You are the one to make the final decision.
    Ciao.

Acrobat 9 Pro. will not accept installation on 2nd computer in full version but only trial or buy a new license; comuter crashed with harddrive; could not deactivate; this is a new computer to replace the old, but now Acrobat refuses to accept it.

    Hey mjmselim,
Using a single user license, you can activate Acrobat on maximum two computers.
You need to first deactivate Acrobat from the first machine and then activate it on the second machine using the same serial number.
Please let me know have you been trying to install Acrobat and error message prompts on your screen.
    Hope to get your response.

If you Go to the app store on your phone, then go to updates you should have a purchased icon at the top.
Click on that and it will show the apps you have downloaded before as they are stored on the icloud.
Then you should be able to click on the app and redownload it, not sure if it will charge but its worth a try.

  • Where is the best place to buy the new ipad? Please help

I am ready to buy a new ipad.  There is no apple store in my town but I will be close to one in a couple of days.  My town has Best Buy, Target, and Walmart.  Assuming I can find what I want... in case I have issues with it, where is the best place to purchase from??  (as far as ease of return, etc). Please advise.

Dah*veed ..... I do not disagree with what you said about the AppleCare+ protection plan as it does state on the website that proof of purchase is required - IF ... You purchase over the phone. Actually, I did not expect to be able to do this over the phone, but as I said I received the paperwork today via email.
I copied this from the website and I'm typing this on my new iPad so it may come out a little distorted but you can read the sentence at the bottom that says it can be done over the phone with proof of purchase. I gave the rep my serial number, confirmed my address and CC details and the deal was done. I even called back later in the day to make absolutely certain that I did in fact purchase the AppleCare+ plan that has the two incidents of accidental damage included for a $49.00 charge. The rep did in fact confirm that I did buy the correct plan that I wanted and I am looking at the printed paperwork confirming the whole thing.
    Maybe I just got lucky!
    iPad - AppleCare+
Every iPad comes with one year of hardware repair coverage and 90 days of telephone technical support. AppleCare+ for iPad gives you two years of repair coverage and technical support from the original purchase date of your iPad. And it adds coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage due to handling of your iPad, each subject to a $49 service fee.1
    How to get AppleCare+
You must buy AppleCare+ within 30 days of your iPad purchase.
There are three ways to buy:
From the Apple Online Store: When you order the new iPad or iPad 2, you’ll have the option to add AppleCare+ to your cart before you check out.
At an Apple Retail Store (requires a Genius Bar appointment, inspection of the iPad, and proof of purchase).
By calling 1-800-275-2273 (requires proof of purchase).

  • Iphone works but is not charging after installing new battery

    Hi guys ,
I am going to do my best to clearly explain what has happened with my Iphone 5s. I noticed my battery was losing charge much quicker then normal so i went ahead and ordered a new battery from Ifixit. I consider myself pretty decent at hands on jobs so i went ahead and replaced the battery myself to try and save some money. The installation went as smooth as can be, No broken parts to my knowledge and the phone went back together no problem. I then powered the phone on , it came on just like normal and everything seemed to be ok , besides the fact the the battery they gave me was only charged 13%. This is when my problems started to happen , I grabbed my apple charger and plugged it in like i would do any other time to charge up the battery. I came back in a hour and noticed that it was still stuck on the same 13% and had not moved at all. It recognized the charger and even said it was charging and showed the lightning bolt but would not take the charge.
I started looking up things online about how to fix this and found a lot of people with similar problems after they changed there battery or lcd screen. I then unplugged it and thought maybe it needed to be calibrated so i let it run completely out of juice until the phone shut off completely. Plugged it in again and now it was stuck at the screen when your phone is dead and shows  that it needed to be plugged in. I tried cleaning out the the charger port and that did not help. I then thought it might be the battery IFIXIT sent me so i took the phone apart again , and put my old battery back into the phone , put it all back together and it turned on no problem, I thought my issue was fixed but i was wrong. I went a plugged it in to charge it and the same thing happened again , would not take a charge just stayed stuck on the same percentage. I went through the phone and made sure all my connections were good and nothing was broken. The phone has been barley used over the last year and before i replaced the battery it had no problems what so ever and the charger port always worked fine.
Does anyone have any idea what my problem could be? I have read so many forums and spent hours trying to get to the bottom of this with no luck yet. Alot of other people seem to have this same problem happen when they replaced there battery or LCD but cant find a solution. I contacted IFIXIT and they thought it could be a bad battery and are sending me out a new one next day shipping. That was before i tested my old battery and found out it has nothing to do with a bad battery it just wont take a charge now. Any help will be greatly appreciated i no longer have apple-care so that's not a option. i was told to maybe clean all the connections with alchol but im a bit nervous that could cause more problems?

Ok, you go and pay that 80 bucks, I will go have a nice dinner with the money I saved.
Fair market value for a legitimate iPhone battery would be about $40-50.  If you're paying anything less than that, then you're getting an inferior battery.  How much did you pay for the replacement battery?  Let's assume you didn't get scammed, and actually did purchase a quality (albeit unauthorized) battery.
So, you saved about $30-40.  Okay, good so far.  However, now you run the risk of:
    A) The installation was performed incorrectly, and causes a problem down the road.
    B) The battery or iPhone has a related issue within the next few months, and you pay for another battery and/or another installation, because the first one didn't fix the problem.
    C) That battery wasn't actually a quality battery; it was just priced like one, and it leaks, expands, causes a fire, etc.
There's a phrase you need to learn; penny wise and pound foolish.
Depending on the context, it has various meanings.  In this context, it means you are trying to save a little bit of money in the short term, but failing to see the possible long term costs.
    Let's take a hypothetical:
I have an iPhone 6 Plus, 128 GB.  Retail cost:  $949 USD + tax.
My battery needs to be replaced.  Apple quotes me $79 USD + tax.  I find a place in the mall called 'iFix iPhones 4 U' that will do it for $40, parts and labor included.
"Heh, dumb Apple, they think I'm a sucker.  I'm saving me $39 and taking my girl out to a fancy place, like Red Lobster!" (sarcasm intended)
About three months later, I notice that my iPhone 6 Plus is getting really warm.  Like, toasty warm, almost enough to burn my skin.
I go back to the kiosk in the mall that replaced my battery.  They tell me they don't warranty their work past five days, and they could replace the battery again for $40, if I want.  Great.  Now I've broken even, but at least I have that great Red Lobster dinner memory!
A few weeks later, the screen flashes red, and the iPhone locks up.
The kiosk guy tells me he's down, and to go somewhere else.  He's sick of seeing me, because he's already got my money, and there's a sign that says 'All sales final'.  What am I gonna do?  Hire a lawyer over $80?
Maybe Apple can help.  I go to the Apple Store, explain my case, they inspect my iPhone, and then tell me they cannot replace the battery because the device has had unauthorized service.  Dang.  Okay, but I've heard that I can get an iPhone 6 Plus exchanged, even if it's damaged, for $329.  Surely they will do that, right?
Nope.  Unauthorized modifications void ALL support options from Apple.  Meaning I cannot get it replaced by Apple.  So, what are my options?
    A) Pay another $949 USD + tax to get another iPhone 6 Plus 128 GB.
    B) Find another unauthorized shop and try my luck again... and again... and again.
Guess I'm not going to Red Lobster anytime soon.
“For the want of a nail the shoe was lost,
For the want of a shoe the horse was lost,
For the want of a horse the rider was lost,
For the want of a rider the battle was lost,
For the want of a battle the kingdom was lost,
And all for the want of a horseshoe-nail.”
TL;DR Version: Saving $30-40 bucks today might end up costing you 20x as much later on.
Instead of that nice dinner, chew on that instead.

  • Best Place to Buy a new iPhone 3G in the US?

I'm planning to buy an iPhone 3G. Yeah I know, why am I buying it after hearing so many problems with it? Well, I think Apple and AT&T will fix the problems since it is in their interest to do so.
Anyhow, Where is the best place to buy it in the US; the Apple Store, AT&T Store or Best Buy (Starting Sept 7)?
Some of my friends bought it at the Apple and AT&T stores and when they had problems with it and had to return it they got a refurbished one.
I was thinking of waiting for Best Buy to get it so if there is a problem with it then maybe I can get a new brand new one. Is this true? Also, I went by the Best Buy store and the salesperson told me that they will offer insurance for the iPhone which the Apple and AT&T store don't offer.
    Any recommendations? Thanks.

Just to give you a head up if you have finally decided to buy iPhone from Best Buy. Unless Apple have fixed the bugs in firmware 2.1. You will most likely encounter frequent crashes using any Apps from Apple store, or simply browsing. The worst of course is the SAD (Silver Apple of Death) where your iPhone is bricked until you go home and restore it using iTunes.
I suggest if you really have these issues, DO NOT exchange your iPhone, because all iPhones are the same! It's the software problem. I'm on my 3rd replacement and that's what I have encountered. Exchanged three times, all three have the exact same software stability -- Bad! Dust getting underneath the glass is actually the norm! I am already reluctant to go back to Apple Store for an exchange. I guess I'll ask them to exchange for a new one when there are more dust getting in the screen. SAD SAD SAD.

  • Is it cheaper in the end to buy a new iPhone at full price?

Normally I just take the current special that a cell phone company is offering and lock in for two years.  So far that has worked out fine.  But if I decide to buy a new iPhone at full price, does it work out to be cheaper in the end?
    Thank you.

This depends, are you on an old voice and data plan where the company over charges you from day one to pay for subsidized cell phones.  They you should definately buy a subsidized cell phone.  You are already over paying for service to cover the subsidized phones cost.  If you don't buy a subsidized phone every two years, the overcharge is just more profit for the cellular company.  Be aware they will charge you a $40 activation fee just because they can.
If you have moved to one of the new voice/data/text plans where you are expected to bring your own device, then buying the phone outright make sense.  Here again, you will be charged the dreaded $40 activation fee.  With AT&T, you can do their NEXT plan and pay for the phone over 20 or 24 months.  And the NEXT plan waives the $40 activation fee.

  • It sees the battery but won't charge it: brand new battery

I had an old (~4-yr-old) battery that had been holding up pretty well. Then one morning, it would no longer hold a charge at all -- if I unplugged the AC adapter, the laptop shut off immediately. The computer still "saw" the battery in the menubar, but was stuck on "Calculating..." and never got above 0%.
I reset the PMU, no help. I ordered a new battery.
The new battery just came, and it has about 10% charge on it as indicated in the menubar. It is stuck on "Calculating..." and the charge is not increasing.
The computer knows the battery is there (no "X" through it) and can even run off it (if I unplug the adapter, computer stays on and shows red-line level in battery icon) but will not charge it.
I've reset the PMU (several times), zapped the PRAM, and reset the nvram. The battery contacts look clean (no obvious dirt or corrosion).
I don't see the Battery Info in "About this Mac..." (it's not listed at all; is this because I'm in OS 10.3.9 or is something else wrong here?) but using ioreg at the command line I get
    "IOBatteryInfo" = ({"Capacity"=4200,"Amperage"=0,"Current"=435,"Voltage"=15282,"Flags"=325,"Absol uteMaxCapacity"=4200})
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Especially since for the last few weeks I've been stuck using my laptop essentially as a desktop computer, very frustrating. Thank you

    Powerbook G4 15" Titanium   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi, m.g.h. Have you ever tried a different, known-good AC adapter, just to eliminate the possibility that the problem resides there? If you plug the adapter in and the adapter ringlight glows green, turn the Powerbook over and press the button on the battery. The lights on the battery should glow green and stay on if the adapter is working correctly.
I don't see the Battery Info in "About this Mac..." (it's not listed at all; is this because I'm in OS 10.3.9...?
Yes, it is. That info doesn't appear in Panther's System Profiler, so you were right to check it in Terminal.
Your battery is obviously connected to the Powerbook, given the Terminal readouts. That being the case, it would seem that the possible causes include a bad (though new) battery; a bad PMU; a bad DC-In board, if you have a DVI Tibook; and a bad AC adapter.

  • I tried to update my macbook pro, the screen is now frozen. My track pad hasn't been working for awhile and my disc drive is broken. IS there anything that can be done without buying a new laptop. It was bought in 2009

My track pad has not been working properly for awhile and my disc drive it damaged. I went to update my macbook pro to maveric and it is now frozen and not allowing me to click anything. Is there anything that can be done to fix this without buying a new one? Its from early 2009

    ShelbyMackenzieLynne,
when you say that your disc drive is damaged, do you mean your MacBook Pro’s hard disk drive, or do you mean its SuperDrive (the CD/DVD drive)?
When you’d updated your MacBook Pro to Mavericks, did the installation succeed, and subsequently freeze up? Or did it freeze up during the Mavericks installation?
Which version of OS X was installed on your MacBook Pro before you’d installed Mavericks?
Are you currently able to boot into the Mavericks recovery partition? To see if you can do so, hold down a Command key and the R key while starting up your MacBook Pro.

  • Best place to buy my new iMac?

I am hoping to get my new iMac with my Tax Refund and I would like to ask if it would be better to buy my iMac at an Apple retail store?
I know of several other local computer stores that carry Macs.
Does it matter? Will I feel a bit more secure buying it at the Apple store?
Thank you for any help and advice

I have bought most of mine at Mac Mall. Never had a problem withi service at the Apple store if I needed to have it fixed. For me it is the best option as the nearest Apple store is over 75 miles away. Buying at the online Apple store is a good way to go also. I used Mac Mall because they were offering 12 months same as cash so I could use thier money until the last minute and leave mine in the bank to draw intrest! If the online Apple store had offered the same deal I probably would have bought it there.
I did buy an eMac at the Apple store for work in order to take advantage of government pricing on it. It was quicker than sending all the required paperwork to Apple that was needed for a government purchase. I would have done iut at Mac Mall but they were out of stock on the model I wanted at the time.
You really cana't go wrong no matter how you do it. As others have posted, if you need a customized model you have to go to the online store. If you want an off the shelf model then shop for the best price. Apple supplies the warranty so they will fix it as long as you buy it from an authorized dealer.
