Is there a color range function in PSE

I have used photoshop CS4 and been comfortable using the color range function. I have tested PSE which I am thinking of buying as it is more affordable, however could not find the color range. Is there a similar function or is it got a different name in PSE? I mainly use this for jewellery and to change backgrounds.
Thnaks for your time and feedback.

  • Select Color Range, fails v13.1.1 on Retina Display Mac

Is there a trick to getting the new Color Range selection function to work on a retina Mac Book Pro?
I am quite familiar with the color range selection in the previous version of Photoshop, and used it regularly. I've decided to try as simply as possible by using a flat image (no layers), and trying to select colors. I've increased the contrast in the image to make darks and lights much easier to pull out.
I've explored setting the sample size to point-sample up to 3x3, and 5x5. I've also set the resolution of my display to 2880 x 1800 (to reduce the possiblility of anti-aliasing problems).
It will not make any selection though, using the eye-dropper sample.
Using other options will work, such as Highlights, Shadows, Skin Tones, etc., but it won't do anything with Sampled Colors.

SO very glad I'm not the only one with this seemingly EXACT same issue.
    System:
Photoshop CS6 via Creative Cloud membership.
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    16GB Ram
    Issue:
Select > Color Range used to work perfectly before update 13.1.1
Now since the update 13.1.1 Color Range doesn't do jack properly. Selecting any color doesn't do anything. sometimes if I select a white it will act as though I've pulled out a gray.. but even one pixel difference will make it deselect. This only happens with Sampled Colors. All otehr color range preselections work as advertised. This would be great if I didn't need the precision afforded to me with Sampled Colors. This is mission critical to my daily work as a scren printing artist and have been unable to find a succesful workaround.
Is there at least a way (without having to uninstall/reinstall) to downgrade back to 13.0.x until this bug is found and fixed?

  • Adobe is charging extra to access full color range of Pantone inks

I pay the professional fee of nearly $60. per month (in perpetuity, at least till the price goes up) for my Creative Cloud subscription. It takes me months to learn all the new bits and pieces of each new function and revised functions of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Acrobat overtime they update. This is very costly.
Now, I spent hours trying to assign a Pantone ink color from my Pantone book to a new logo last Sunday only to find I need to pay additional to Adobe to access the new colors in the Pantone books I purchased this year (I loyally replace my books every few years to be sure my colors are accurate). Pantone ink colors are necessary to a print designer's repertoire. I show these colors to clients so they see exactly what they ill be getting. I find it outrageous that Adobe is trying to squeeze yet more money for something that is so essential to professionals that it should be included without extra work or extra money.

At the bottom of the color range dialog box, there is a drop down menu.  Select "None" rather than grayscale.

  • Color range selection + layer styles

    Hello--
    Help me if you can!
I have had it on good authority (my photoshop instructor) that color range selection hasn't been working correctly for some time.
    I'm using CS2, version 9.0.2 on an IMac os X version 10.5.8.
I am often working with multiple layers that are not similar at all.  When I have one layer active and do a color selection, it may also select the color range on inactive layers.  Then, if I do a fill, for example, it may affect areas on other layers that were inadvertantly color selected.  I know there are ways to ask photoshop to perform a function on all layers, but I don't see this as an option or setting with color range selection.  I had started to assume it was sort of like crop, which affects all layers, but when I asked, my teacher says it should only be selecting/affecting the layer that is active.
I found I can deal with this by 'closing the eyes' (making non-visible) the other layers...but that is a hassle and sometimes hides exactly what I need to see.
Then noticed, just lately, that when I use a layer style, it is no longer showing up on my layer palette.  Maybe I don't understand correctly, but I thought any layer style addition would show up on the palette under the name of that layer.  If I happen to remember that a particular layer used a layer style, I can still click on the layer styles icon and alter it, but it isn't displaying on the layer palette any more--so I cannot toggle or discard the effect simply, and it is hard to know why a layer looks the way it does without that information.
Could be I'm corrupted and need to deinstall/reinstall?  Is there something I'm missing about these functions , or something I accidentally changed?  I would really appreciate any help or information.

Yes your instructor is wrong, it always selects visible pixels, and always has. You can however create a selection before you go into Color Range, and it will only work within that selection though.
If you want Color Range to work in precisely the same way as it always did in the old versions you need to make sure that you ..
    • Highlight a non masked layer and
    • Uncheck the somewhat bizarrely entitled "Localised Color Clusters" checkbox
The changes to Color Range happened a few versions ago, to my memory it was with CS4 .  The main improvement was that they made it more powerful with the capability to produce better more refined selections. They also unfortunately made the daft mistake of making the command work DIFFERENTLY depending on whether you have a masked or a non masked layer selected. This is not very logical really because it just causes confusion, and doesn't really achieve anything constructive in my opinion. No one who knows what they are doing wants to modify an existing mask using Color Range.

  • Color range change in CS4 (why change this?)

another "change" in CS4 i quite dont understand why they did.
in CS3 i was about to sample from the toolbox the forgeground color (black-white) as well as change the foreground color (x)
and then sample from then, ensuring that I was sampling the purest white and black from that channel, now it does not work anymore.
I really feel many changes were done to CS4 were done without consulting (testing?) by heavy users (people that spend 8-12 hours a day with application.  Maybe I'm wrong, but it is annoying, even the quick keys for cycling through channels make no sense whatsoever,  (command 1, to start from the FIRST channel is so INTUITIVE!!!)

The legacy option that you are looking for in Color Range, is still available by unchecking the strangely named "Localized Color Clusters" - this creates much cruder selections but does it more "purely"- it creates the same selections as before, and still uses the foreground colour as a starting point. Actions created in CS3 and earlier will pick up this option.

Yes, many of us are getting this impression especially with the last 2 revisions, although this particular feature isn't really one example. There is a lot of new functionality in Color Range under the hood, and the quality of the selections with "color clusters" on is hugely improved.

  • Select color range" in Photoshop 11

Hello, I´m looking for the menu point "selecr color range" in Photoshop 11. I´ve seen this in a lot of tutorials but I can´t find it in Photoshop 11. Is this function only available with Photoshop CS versions or where can a find this in Photoshopp 11?
    [email protected]

If your using photoshop elements 11, then no, there is no Select>Color Range.
That's available in the full photoshop versions, i.e. photoshop cs6 or cc 20214.
You can use the Magic Wand Tool to get similar results, there's just no preview window like color range has.

  • Select tool (similar to Select Color Range) based on Contrast

This would be useful on its on or in conjunction with the Color Range tool. Maybe a beefed up Select Range tool.
Color Range has difficulty with gradients & whatnot. Selecting using Contrast would be a way to overcome this. It would work best if it had some of the same functionality of Levels so that an upper and lower range could be fine-tuned. It would also need to take into account a previous selection made with the Lasso or some other way in order to exclude or include only the parts of the img that are being targeted.

As an example, there is an image of a person that is taken against the sky. I want to select the person only. The sky is a low-contrast area of the img and I want to select everything but that area without actually affecting the img.
Not the sky, but the idea is here. I used brightness/contrast for the 2nd & contrast only on the 3rd img.

  • "Color Range" isn't even listed under "Select"?

"Color Range" isn't even listed under "Select"?  I'm trying to isolate an image onto a white background, and the steps I'm following says
Select duplicated layer and go to Select > Color Range. Select white background with eye dropper and increase fuzziness to maximum amount.
BUT I don't even see that listed!

There's a clever trick to simulate it in PSE (credit to Douglas Nelson - third reply at http://www.clearps.com/photoshop-forum/index.php/m/283867/.
Select the color you want to select with eyedropper
Make a new solid color layer filled with the eyedropper color
Set the blending mode of that layer to Difference (everything in your original the color of your eyedropper color will now be black)
Use a Threshold adjustment layer to expand or contract the area to be selected.
Use magic wand (low tolerance, contiguous off) to select black areas
There's your color selection. You can hide or delete the layers created for this procedure as long as you don't deselect, and you'll still have your selection active.
To avoid accidental deselection, save the selection frequently.

  • Y-T-D and Range Functions not working in upgrade to v 11.1.2.507 FR

Has anyone else had this problem. We are upgrading to v11.1.2 from 9.3.1 and when I create a new report with a range function in v 11, it just hangs there. When I use the YTD function, sometimes it works, sometimes it just hangs. Does anyone have any ideas on this. Thanks, Donna

To be honest the best place to start is to read through the Upgrade section of the install/config documentation, if you still don't understand after reading through then ask or specific question or maybe discuss with a consultant.
    Documentation is available at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epm_install_11121/frameset.htm?launch.html

  • Color Range doesn't work correctly with latest update

as the title suggests, I'm having difficulty using the color range tool properly. It worked perfect just before the most recent update (13.1) and now works very strangely.
It seems to select whatever color it feels like except the one I need. And then it is very very selective if it will even select anything at all. I'm not sure how else to explain this so it is clearer and easier to be understood. I will post the System Info from Photoshop below.

Possibly you are missing something in the way you apply this command. Here's how I use it to select patchy clouds with ragged edges and continuously varying shades of gray:
Select the eyedropper tool on the Toolbar and on the options bar set the sample size to 3x3.
Activate the Color Range command. Activate the "selection" radio button and choose "none" in the selection preview. In the "select" box, choose "sampled colors".
Set a trial fuzziness of,say,50. Click with the eyedropper on a point in the midst of the color you want to select. That's your "base" color.
Then switch to the "Color Added" (plus) eyedropper, holding the left mouse button down while dragging it over areas deviating from the base color but which you want included.
If there are non-contiguous areas with still different colors you also want to include, release the mouse and move the cursor to those areas before dragging again.
All the while, keep an eye on the dialog box display which shows what you've selected, albeit crudely. If you pick up unwanted colors, switch to the "subtract from sample" (minus) eyedropper and drag it over those areas.
When you think you've got it about right, experiment with the fuzziness slider to see if you can improve things by increasing or decreasing fuzziness.
Don't re-use the plain eyedropper unless you want to start all over again. Optionally, instead of switching among the 3 eyedroppers, you can activate only the plain eyedropper but use it with SHIFT to add or ALT to subtract.

  • How do I select a color range like in Photoshop OR copy/move a layer into the mask of another layer?

    Hi there,
I'm trialling Photoshop Elements and wanting to use a black and white (grey scale) layer that I've made as a mask in another layer and don't know how to do it in Elements.  In Photoshop, I'd do this (there maybe a better way in PS to do it, but I haven't discovered it yet)...
Click the layer i've created that I intend to use as a mask
    Select All
    Copy
select layer that I want the mask to be applied to
click the Add Layer Mask button (at the bottom of the Layers window)
click the mask icon so it is highlighted (and the image isn't)
    switch to Channels view
highlith the Layer Mask beneath the R,G,B layers and make it visible
    Paste
    make it invisible again
    switch back to layers.
This works and retains the full range of transparency for semi transparency and soft edges of the mask etc.
Alternatively, I can select a Color Range, but that doesn't seem to be available in PS Elements.
So, how do I achieve the same result in PS Elements?
    Thanks for your help

Perfect!   Thanks very much R_Kelly.  That does exactly what I was hoping to do.
    Cheers

  • Color Range doesn't work properly in CS3

    Hi there,
I have a problem with CS3. Since a few weeks I can't use properly "Colour Range" feature.
Especially for bright colour the Colour Range doesn't select what I want to select. For example I want to select a bright cloud and can't select it with Colour Range. Of course I checked if there is any information or I have a burn area.
I use several different setting but I still have the problem.
    I used 8/16 bit, Adobe RGB/sRGB
    At Colour Range I use:
    - Sampled colours
    - Selection
    - Fuzziness: how much I need it
    - Selection preview: None
    I need help...
    Thanks

  • Access range function in SAP/R3

    I have the following problem:
I want to develop a portal component that is accessing SAP/R3 transactions and show the result in the portal.
Therefore I'm using a form. The values within the form are handed over to the RFC as import parameter.
A table with all the necessary values is returned.
The transaction I rebuild in the portal is using a range function (for e.g. order number from …. to ...).
    The question:
Can I access the range function from the rorm and give the values back to the form?
Probably this is only possible, if there is a RFC available for that.
Or is there any standard portal functionality?
    Thank you for helping.
    best regards,
    Birgit

    Hi Birgit,
you can do that by the "Extended Value Selector (EVS)" or "Object Value Selector" functions.
For this please check the following tutorials.
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/downloaditem?rid=/library/uuid/5dcbe990-0201-0010-2c99-a2bc9e61acfc
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/downloaditem?rid=/library/uuid/91c5e990-0201-0010-4981-9b2075751da5
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/downloaditem?rid=/library/uuid/0c0dcacd-0401-0010-b4bd-a05a0b4d68c8
By above samples, you'll be able to create a form with from and to input boxes and by clicking get value button next to input fields just like R/3, you'll get the available values and select them.
For this, of course you've to add a parameter to the RFC to get available values if needed. By this you'll load less tables.
Another way is to send all available values with a table.
But, on the other hand, please ask those kind of development questions at web dynpro forum.
    regards

  • Color Range "Local Group"

    Hello together,
I just wonder what the new feature within the Select: Color Range Dialogue means.
I'm using the german version, so I don't know how it's named in english, but it should be something like "local colorgroup". It's the only new feature in this dialogue.
So, what exactly does this feature? i tried for some time but I can't figure.
As far as I thought in the beginning I can reduce the selected color values a bit more smooth in adition to the tolerance-bar.
But than, sometimes, after checking the box for this feature, my selection gets twice as big as it was before?
Can anyone help me out of my misery. :)
    Thanks a lot
    Philip

From what I can tell, it seems that the function will be more tolerant the closer it is to the click point.
In other words, it's kinda of like a radial gradient spanning out from the point that you click. It will select more for the area closer to the click point and gradually less as it moves away.
This may or may not be what it does, this is just what I have found from fooling around with it.

  • Photoshop CC crashes when selecting "Color Range"

Hi, my Photoshop CC crashes whenever I click on "Color Range" under "Select". It shows "Photoshop CC has stopped working".
It seems like no one I know can fix my problem. Can any kind souls out there who could advise if it's due to certain of my PC configurations, and how I could resolve this issue?
    Thanks a million for reading!!

We can't know. You have not provided any system information or details about your document. Quite likely you simply have color profile or hardware acceleration issues, so update your graphics driver.
