i'm writing to you from a PPC G4 (AGP graphics) that will self-destruct by the time i switch off and (attempt) to re-start tomorrow. i will then need to do a re-install, just to see if i have gotten any replies (grinds teeth to the root). it will probably be my 8 th re-install in the past month. i just can'st takes no mores, Cap'n
<exasperation>deep breath... each time i have done a clean install, zero-ed all data when erasing (7 times over, on this occasion), repaired permissions before and after each software update, and followed every advice i could find via google to pre-empt another "Error: underlying task reported failure on exit" and the inevitable hanging grey screen; i have earned nothing but another Disk Utility report of the same problem. my HD seems to be OK - Disk Utility and Disk Warrior both say it's "verified" by SMART (although i've read this could be no assurance...). it's 40 GB, nothing else installed but NetBarrier; nothing saved on it (just 3GB of OS).
i've searched this forum over the last weekend and come across a diverse range of methods in resolving software update issues. i have tried downloading the security update and safari 3.2 directly from the site and bypassing Software Update- to no avail (but noticed that they are quite larger in MB than via Software Update??).
the one suggestion the intrigued me was installing the update via Terminal. why would this be any different? the worst thing about this is that there is no universal way that'll work for all, just individual solutions for different macs??? could my problem be exacerbated by using the double layer (double the permissions to fix?) of a Panther OS with Tiger Upgrade disk?
when i last tried to resolve the "error" with safe mode, fsck and DU Repair Disk/Permissions, which initially failed, i resorted to Disk Warrior, which re-built the directory, and "fixed" the HD. when i re-tried fsck it said the HD was "ok", but i still had the "error: underlying task..." on DU?
is there an issue with the Security Update oo8 because it's PRIMARILY for 10.5 and not Tiger? why have some encountered this problem and others escaped any seeming conflicts ? is this problem also caused by JAVA updates (there are, after all, 4 updates!)

looking at your suggestion to check /Library/Startup items in the concurrent thread ("Help needed after installing Security Update 2008-008"), i recalled that the only thing i have in this file system is 3 folders concerning Intego, NetBarrier and Virus Barrier. one of these contains the NetBarrier x4 daemon which has no image, just the apple "pencil, ruler, pen on paper" "A" image. i don't think it correctly downloaded, but this the case in every instance.
i'm running netbarrier x4 10.4.5 updated and downloaded on installation. intego Support says that there should be nothing in my "Startup/Login items". i thought they meant Login items (users>login items) because when i take the folders out of my "/Library/Startup items", NetBarrier fails to "initialize".
intego is now on newtbarrier x5, but they say x4 is fully compatible with Tiger???
my baby maybe getting on, but it's strong enough, i just need to know what's bugging it!

I'm still not clear why Apple only issued security updates for 10.6 and later. I assume they think we should all update our operating systems or maybe they are just focusing on the majority of users?
Apple has had a long standing policy of only supporting the current and previous operating system releases. Whether they decide to make an exception for even older releases is anyone's guess.
You can send them feedback to express your opinion.
Or does the new Trojan not affect older OS? I'd like to know , if anyone has information.
As far as is known, it does affect older unsupported releases. Disabling Java in your web browser is the current preventive approach (and that is a community derived approach)

Does someone know how to solve a suscription issue?

The company I work in bought yesterday two Complete Bundles of Creative Cloud, one for me and one for another co-worker (we're both designers), but she can't open any Creative Cloud software, as they still say that the tryout version expired. She can't even actualise the account.
I have two receipts and the problem seems to be that whoever bought the two suscriptions (my boss) made it by using my account twice.
Is there anyone who knows how to help me out on this? Can I give her one of my two bundles? Can I call somewhere? A mail? Hahahaha I've desperate.

Your best bet will be to contact Adobe Support directly to see what can be done. It might come down to you having to transfer one of the licenses to your coworker. Support should be able to help you thru in any case.

How to verify Security Update (QuickTime 7.1.6) is installed

Hi,
I manually installed Security Update (QuickTime 7.1.6) for Windows but I am not sure how to verify whether the update successfully installed or not. Is there any way we can check that the update is installed? Maybe file version? Hopefully someone can help.

If you install QT 7.1.6, it says 7.1.6 in the help screen. If you install the newly released security update, nothing changes to show the security update has been applied. It still says 7.1.6 in the help screen. Even running the patch manually, it gives no indication it has successfully installed.
I am required to install this patch on about 200 clasroom machines but have no way to verify which ones get the patch and which don't. Apparently I can't even go around to each of them and manually verify.

Is my mac overheating? How to solve fan noise issues?

I have an early 2011 macbookpro 13 inch that came with lion installed. Especially for the last couple of days I realised my macbook is overheating. I'm using a hard surface lapdesk (the logitech model) at all times.
Today my computer was open only for half an hour and only chrome open (twitter for mac is running on background and that's it) istat nano shows temperatures for cpuA of 190 degrees and the fan starts to make lots and lots of noise that I had a trouble hearing the low levels of music. idle memory is shown to be ranging from 20% to 95%, generally around 55%. fans go way above 4000rpm. This is not consistent though. It happens from time to time.
Also, from the beginning my computer makes a click clack noise when I first press the start button. I thought this was normal but I read somewhere in this forum that it is not. Is it really not normal?
What you think I should do? Shall i go to geniusbar to have it looked at? Is there really a problem?

You're quite conscientious about heat, and although your levels seem high, it's hard to validate what's normal and what's not with a computer. Go to a Apple Bar, and they'll probably say, "that's normal."
I do believe that you should visit your Genius Bar - but come prepared. Log regular temperatures, with and without a lapdesk. Note the click/clack noise. But unless you can suggest there's a problem, you might have a difficult time proving there's a problem.
One thing you can improve: boot time. If you're pressing the start button, you might sleep your machine, instead. No start up time, less wear on your machine, reduced heat. Also, you might want to look into GFXCardstatus to reduce your heat http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus.
Oh...and post how things went at the Apple Store.

How to solve Windows 7 issues with Acobat X?

I hope someone can advise how to deal with the following errors:
i. In Windows 7 Explorer, I somtimes have context menu options for 'Convert to Adobe PDF' and 'Convert to Adobe PDF and email'. Both these options give ask me to select a target file name and then give message concerning missing PDFMaker. Should I have PDFMaker or not by virtue of having Acrobat X? If not can I remove these menu options?
ii. In Windows 7 Explorer, I also have context menu option 'Combine supported files in Acrobat'. But again, with Office 2010 this fails because 'Windows cannot find Acrobat.exe'. Why is this if Acrobat X is installed?
iii. Also, in Office 2010 itself, there is an Adobe tag on the ribbon which fails. Presumably it is related to the above. Should this work or can I disable it?
I'm using Office 2010 Pro on Windows 7 Pro. I have Acrobat 10 installed and also CS4.

I have disabled the add in in Office 2010 though.

How to solve CS5 update download problem

After having to reinstall Windows and CS5 (having previously deactivated it and then re-installing it fine), I keep getting update failures when CS5 tries to download known updates. Here is an example:

How can I resolve this error that is on Adobe's end? No human will speak to CS5 customers and the Chat support people have no idea what to do.

Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again." 12MAR14 1152 - Removed and Installed Firefox 11 twice and, so far got the same result - the update message keeps popping up on non administrator user accounts!
Is it a bug? Someone already asked why a non-admin user account is given the opportunity to attempt a software update?

Here is your problem:
javac.exe not found under C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10You need to install the JDK, not the JRE, because OC4J requires a java compiler,
which is included in the JDK only -- and not in the JRE.

How to solve this major issue.

I am loading members for a particular dimension from an oracle
view(say view1) to an oracle table(say table1).Here I have used
an ORDER BY to load in a particular order always. I have created
a view(say view2)from this table1.The reason to create the view2 is to use the logic
ORDER BY ,CONNECT BY PRIOR to sort the stored/shared members.
Now I am using this view2 to load members for a dimension in planning.
On first execution, it executes without any error. But on executing it again, it throws
many errors, most of which say Cannot load dimension member, error message is:
com.hyperion.planning.HspRuntimeException: Move would result in base member being
a sibling of a corresponding shared member
This error occured previously as well.I mean before using an ORDER BY in my first interface,
ie loading from view1 to table1.
Kindly help me to resolve the problem.

-I found this on a Mac site. Sometimes computers lose their mind. Don't ask me why or how it happens but it does. Sometimes you simply have to totally discharge the computer. One thing I have learned about the Blue and white and the Gray G4 Macs is that sometimes pushing the PMU is not enough. If your machine is dead, then try the following.
* Unplug the unit.
* Remove the battery
* Push the PMU switch (count to 5 slow)
* Push the start button on the front of the Mac (count to 5 slow)
* Let the unit sit for 15-30 minutes
* Replace the battery
* Plug it back in, and push the start button
If it doesn't work I usually repeat the steps above, pull the RAM, and let it sit longer. If it doesn't work after this, it is take it to the shop time.
