Is there a demon in my iPod?

Question

About half the time when I navigate to a song, the iPod refuses to play it, and simply reverts back to the home screen, ie. Music, Extras, Settings, etc.
After I hit the center button of the click wheel, the song comes up, and the timing bar comes up, and it looks like it's going to play, but ultimately it doesn't, and as mentioned reverts back to the home screen.
this problem has reduced this iPod to a random jukebox player. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanx. devanson

thanks for your response. I'm using iTunes to add these songs, so i guess they are supported by apple. of the the 600 or so songs on my ipod, about half i purchased from itunes, half came from my cd collection, and few came from CDs my kids burned. for instance, Citizen Cope, which my daughter burned for me, plays. Rod Stewart which I bought on iTunes, won't play. Neither will any of the David Bowie tunes I bought on itunes . . . very odd. Any help appreciated. David
1) Are you using iTunes to add these songs to your
ipod.
2) are the songs supported by the ipod
3) ive heard of some instances where you can't play
music youv'e bought off of the iTunes music store. In
that case i think there is a support page for it.
If you can be more specific to the files being used,
are they mp3 or aac, or some other format i might be
able to be of some more help.
