Is there a difference in quality between importing into 08 and Final Cut Pr

When importing video from a DV camera, is there a difference in the quality of the raw video recorded onto the Hard Drive between iMovie 08, iMovie 6 and Final Cut Pro?
Will I get better quality using Final Cut?
Thanks
Kevin

sorry for 'overwhelming' you with info
yes, all apps copy the dv-encoded material from miniDV devices 'natively' = lossless import..
but only iM08 then adds some 'loss' .. nobody knows exactly, what & how.. but you are not able to EXport lossless from within iM08 ..
example: import dv, export dv = adds blurr and 'magnifies' somehow the same file .. ( ! )
using iMHD≤6, FCE/P allows you, to export lossless = highest quality possible (except the parts of your project, which need renderning, e.g. titles, transitions...)
example: import dv, export dv = same quality ...
so, if _pic quality_ is your major concern, avoid iM08 ..
if you want fast results and export quality doesn't matter: iM08
if you want a Library off all imports ever and full integration into AppleTV/, YT.. = iM08
if you want other codecs than dv and simple use = iM08
if you want all imports for any future project and high dv quality = FCE/P
if you want easy to use and high dv quality = iMHD≤6 ..
if you want other codecs than dv and Hollywood quality = FCP

  • Is there any difference in quality between mp4 and m4v?

    Is there any difference in quality between mp4 and m4v? I am figuring out how best to save old VCR files. Is the 264 category the best?

    So, what would that software be? Anything that I mentioned, e.g., iMovie? Any Video Converter?
    I'm a Mac user so I want files that play "natively" in QT X, QT 7, QL, iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad, and/or TV players. This means I want the H.264/AAC compressed data in MOV, MP4, or M4V file containers. I can use QT 7 Pro, MPEG Streamclip, and /or QT X to move MPEG-4/AAC compressed data to MOV file containers, MPEG Streamclip to movie M4V and MOV MPEG-4/AAC data to MP4 file containers, and Subler to move MP4 or MOV MPEG-4 AVC/AAC/AC3/Chapter data to M4V file containers. This is strictly a simple "copy" operation and no recompression of data is involved. (I.e., the quality is not changed.)
    iMovie is a video editor and it forces an export conversion of your project once completed which can degrade quality. Have never used the Any Video Converter so I don't know if it has an audio and/or video "passthrough" feature for data already in a compatible compression formats. If it doesn't then any conversion it makes has the potential to degrade video content.
    As to AVI, this is a legacy file container abandoned by Microsoft a dozen years ago in favor of their modernized WMV compression format/file type products. Compared to MKV, AVI is an outmoded/out-of-date container which I don't recommend you use unless you are a glutton for punishment. However, if you must use it, then you might try the AvidMux app. It can "copy" compatible content to a number of file container types—including AVI and MKV. Just don't blame me if its use creates more problems than it solves on current Mac systems.

  • Is there a difference in quality between exporting to .dv in iMovie09 & FCP

    I recently purchased FCP to do batch exporting of full quality .dv files because '09 didn't seem to have that option. I've been messing around with it now, though, and it appears as though both are capable of doing this. I've searched for this information and found conflicting results-- is exporting to .dv in iMovie destructive or is there no difference between '09 and FCP?

    This thread sounds mysteriously similar to this one.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2380150&start=0&tstart=0
    If you export to .dv with either FCP or iMovie I'm quite certain that you will be re-compressing your video. That's just the nature of the interleaved file structure of .dv
    I you import .dv into FCP you will have to render the audio ONE time. Not the video.
    If you export .mov files using the current settings (which should be DV NTSC) you will NOT be re-compressing the video. but you will have a .mov file.
    FCP is NOT the right application for archival or any sort of file management tasks. File management is one of FCPs weakest attributes.
    You may want to have a look at CatDV

  • Is there any difference in quality between different LCD replacement panels.

    I have a Model 1260 15" macbook pro from early 2008.  Today a button popped off my shirt.  I randomly tossed it on the desk near my bed.  Later I went to close the laptop and... *CRACK* the button was sitting on the notebook just to the right of the magsafe adapter.  Now the 4 left most inches of my screen are just a series of vertical lines.  I'm wanting to hold out for the next big redesign before purchasing a new computer.   I'm really hoping next year's model will ditch the optical drive and either have a large SDD or a combo of SDD and HD.  In the mean time, I'd like to just replace the screen.  I looked at ifixit and a few youtube videos.  While the process looks tedious, it doesn't look particularly difficult as long as I'm careful.  There seem to be 3 brands, Samsung, LG-Phillips, and Chi-Mei.  There are also many sellers listing panels on ebay and I've messaged a few to ask what brand panels they are using.  Should I go for any one brand over the others?
    Thanks.
    -Kevin

    First, don't hang onto the hope that next year's MBP won't have an optical drive; instead, you'd be advised to purchase a 2011 MacBook Air, which doesn't have an optical drive but relies on SDD. If you need a CD/DVD drive, you can get that separately, if you need. The latest Air has received better reviews than anything else in the Apple lineup.
    I'm not an expert on the different brand of keys available. But you'll want to make sure the color is an exactly match to the model. Replacing thes keys is relatively inexpensive but tedious, you might do well to email sellers to guarantee the color and fit.
    Good luck with the repair!

  • Is there a difference in generatePDFOutput between Livecycle ES2 (9) and Livecyle ES (8)

    I know that we are way behind in terms of Livecycle ES versions, but we have recently installed Livecycle ES2 (9.0) on a set of new Websphere 7 servers. All seems to be progressing will in terms of systems integrating with the new servers, but we have run into an issue with the way PDF documents are rendered in Livecycle ES2 (9.0)/WAS 7 versus Livecycle ES (8.0) / WAS 6.
    We have a few XDP templates that have Rich Text Fields with a Data Format of XHTML that are not rendering the same when using PX measurement.
    EXAMPLE: <p style="left-margin: 15px;">
    Using the API generatePDFOutput under Livecycle ES (8.0) the text is indent and all displays well in the rendered PDF. But, in Livecycle ES2 (9.0) there is no indention and the text is aligned to the left margin of the field.
    Here is the data that is used:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <form1>
       <RTF_Field>
      <body xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
      <p>This is a <i>Rich Text Field.</i></p>
      <p>It is filled using <b><i>XHTML</i></b> data.</p>
      <p></p>
      <p>The following should be 3 indented bullets. The first is indented 15<b><i>px</i></b> and the other two are indented 30<b><i>px</i></b>:</p>
      <p></p>
      <p style="margin-left: 15px;">&#8226;&#160;&#160;&#160;Bullet 1</p>
      <p style="margin-left: 30px;">&#186;&#160;&#160;&#160;Sub-Bullet 1</p>
      <p style="margin-left: 30px;">&#186;&#160;&#160;&#160;Sub-Bullet 2</p>
      </body>
      </RTF_Field>
    </form1>
    As you can see there is no HTML table code in the prefill. I know that that is not allowed.
    Here is an image of the results on the old Livecycle ES (8.0)
    Here is an image of the results on the new Livecycle ES2 (9.0)
    Has anyone else run into this issue? I am not an expert when it comes to the administrative side of Livecycle ES, but is there a configuration, or setting, issue that we may be missing in the Livecycle or Websphere consoles? Is there some form of tranformation of the html code on the older server that is not active on the new one? Is there a difference in the HTML code that was valid on Livecycle ES (8.0) versus Livecycle ES2 (9.0)?
    Any insight would be grately appreciated.

    I think you are right!!! Just noticed, I came here via a link.  I'll repost and hopelfully the mods will delete this.

  • Trouble with Round trip between Soundtrack Pro 2 and Final Cut Pro 6

    I have edited a home movie together. I then have sent the sequence to Color for grading and then after completing the Color changes and Rendering. I sent it back to Final Cut Pro. It starts out working fine but during the transfer process it stops at somewhere between 50% and 60%. It is during the "Importing XML Data" phase. It just sits there and does not change and I have to force quit to get out of it. The exact same thing happens when I try to round trip from Soundtrack Pro 2 back to Final Cut Pro. So I am unable to make use of the changes I make in these programs.
    This is a round trip process that I have successfully made many times before. Nothing has changed. I am working in Final Cut Studio 2 with the latest updates on an Intel Mac. Any advice on how to remedy this situation would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

    Thanks.
    What's I've been doing is exporting the Soundtrack files as AIFF files, then importing them into Final Cut...
    It's working... at least well enough. Still seems harder then just being able to go back and forth between the two applications.
    Thanks for the advice.

  • Is there a difference in quality by going directly to iDVD

    In iMovieHD 5, Is there a difference in quality by going directly to iDVD or by "sharing" to a high quality Quicktime movie and importing that into iDVD? I want to make sure that the quality of my stills doesn't degrade too much. Sometimes, I've noted that they get a little jagged between transitions.
    Is there an acceptable or safe length of time an iMovie should be?
    Thanks,
    Bob
    iMac 2.1gHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Go to your iMovie's project file and control click on it.
    Go to 'show package contents'.
    Go to the folder that says 'shared movies.
    Then to the folder that says 'iDVD'.
    Drag and drop this file into iDVD's window.
    Another way is to simply drag the iMovie HD project into the iDVD window. iDVD is smart enough to find the file it needs in the project package.

    Not from this Forum .This is a User to User technical support Forum .There is no relevant Apple presence here
    All iOS devices are made at the same factories in China for world wide distribution .
    The only difference is that some Middle East governments forbid the shipping of devices with Facetime and Apple are required to remove it from shipments to certain Countries

    Hi All,
    What is the difference between importing a journal and posting a journal?
    Thanks...

    When you import a journal, you have simply put the entries in a holding area. Those entries are not reflected in your accounts yet.
    Once you review the journal and it looks good, you post it.
    That is when your accounts are updated.

  • Difference in sound between Logic on PPC and Intel (64 Bit)

    hi,
    I'm using PPC for Logic Pro. Is there any difference in sound between using logic pro on PPC and running it on Intel Macs. I'm not good in tecnical things, but someone told me, Logic would sound better on Intel based Macs, because the system is 64 bit instead of 32 bit on PPC. Is that true? Any experiences?
    Thanx,
    grooveX

    There are no differences!
    the "sound quality" is stryctly relted with the Audio equipment.
    (the new Intel Xeon processors are faster than PPC... in 2008... obviously... but in 2003/4/5 PPC G5 was much faster than same year 2003 Intel Xeon release
    If you work with DAE TDM HD accell in PPC or on Intel the sound will be the same...
    obviosly if some update shoot down the compatibilty with PPC side you will cannot use the future upgrades...
    if you use a Motu 828 Mk3 the sound will be great... and same as ppc or Intel or Windows and Linux
    (but Logic works on Mac... PPC and Intel... is the same... logic is the master of the sound).
    Anyway... I think the analog recording studio in the 1970 1990 gives you a super great sound... in some cases the analog recording studio sonds much better that digital studios..
    I'm talking about a simple example.. the audio frequency are from 20 to 20.000 HZ... the music quality... (artistically) is not related with the quality of the machine that you use for make it....
    I suggest you not follow the mode ... and run to buy the last model .. most often are money thrown to the wind.
    if you buy a good new interface.... you are in the rigth way...
    but the very important thing is:
    MAKE YOUR MUSIC AND DON'T MATTER ABOUT these unnecessary competitions ... is only useful to those who sells computer!
    I know people that doing good music with old G4 ...
    ...music with highest quality ...
    is not the machine that makes the music .... Only MEN can obtain a piece of art ... even using dirt!

  • Poor quality ProRes 422HQ exports compared to Final Cut 7 - suggestions?

    At my workplace I'm looking at using Creative Cloud to replace Final Cut 7, but I'm having a really hard time producing broadcast quality ProRes 422HQ exports using Media Encoder. Detail levels are comparable but large areas of colour (e.g. a blue sky) show noticeable visual noise.
    Looking closer you can see only 3 or 4 bands of colour with pixelated edges, whereas FCP deals with these gradients in a much more subtle way.
    Source files are 1080p H264 movs from a Canon 5D and Final Cut exports (even from FCPX) just seem so much better.
    More worryingly, I've even tried using AME's Animation codec or even Non-Compressed and the results are still quite a bit worse than a Final Cut 7 ProRes 422HQ export (we export from the timeline rather than using Compressor). Some tests I've done exporting to H264 at 12Mbps are also definitely inferior to Final Cut.
    There aren't that many options to adjust - ticking Maximum Depth and Maximum Render Quality just adds lots of horizontal lines to the final file. Format is Quicktime, Renderer is set to Mercury Playback Engine Software Only.
    Am I missing anything obvious or is Media Encoder just not as good? If so how is anyone using it in a broadcast workflow?
    Below are some screenshots which I've made black and white and boosted the brightness so it's easier to see, but the pixelisation is noticeable on the normal exported movs and seems to be a definite step-down from FCP7.
    This could well be a deal-breaker in terms of using Creative Cloud in the future - which would be very disappointing as the software itself seems great.
    01 - H264 Raw - from Canon 5D:
    02 - Final Cut ProRes 422HQ:

    Sorry for the long post - any suggestions gratefully accepted!

    Thanks for the response Kevin,
    I fully updated as of last week - Premiere 8.1.0, Media Encoder 8.1.0.122 and ran the export again with a brand new Premiere project, dragged into a sequence, export media, selected Quicktime / ProRes 422HQ codec, matched the frame size, pressed queue to open Media Encoder and the started the export.
    Exactly the same results I'm afraid - blocky, pixelated areas on gradients or areas of similar color.
    Frustratingly, the free and 6 year old Mpeg Streamclip (v1.9.2) does a much better job, on a par with Final Cut. I don't suppose there's any way to automatically route the export via it?! Where Media Encoder uses 3 or 4 color shades with blocky finite edges, Streamclip and FCP seem to use 6 or 7 shades and the transitions between areas far smoother with visible dithering (you can see this in my original screenshots).
    I would say that it seems to do with the source camera and how it's been originally encoded - I've done some further tests with Canon C300 rushes and they seem to convert / export well without problems and yet some blue skies in footage shot on a Sony F55 show some obvious banding (after conversion to ProRes 422HQ) that doesn't appear on the source.
    I'm happy to provide the raw H264 mov to see if you are able to get any better results.
