Is there a documented correlation between high CPU/RAM usage and poor system performance?

I realize this subject is not black and white and has quite a bit of depth to it as high usage of either the CPU or RAM does not necessarily mean that a computer is running slowly.
However, is there any documentation, scientific research or academic journal that makes a correlation between poor system performance and the consumption of system resources.
It goes without saying that if you use all your RAM then there won't be any available for additional programs, but can this be substantiated with metrical data?

  • X-Fi + 2 GFX-Cards = high CPU-Load, slow Mouse, hanging system

    >X-Fi + 2 GFX-Cards = high CPU-Load, slow Mouse, hanging systemA Hey guys,
I'm running 2 GF 8800 GTs (PCIe .) cards on a MSI Eclipse SLI board. My Audigy2 ZS PCI runned fine in this system.
I just replaced the Audigy by a PCIe X-Fi (EMU20K2 audio processor - not the xtreme audio from MSI).
Now I'm dealing with the following issue:
    - System startup is slow
    - in Windows, Mouse is slow, stuttering
    - high CPU-Load
    - very slow system response
!!! Attention !!! I had this problems allready at the st boot with the X-Fi, when the driver from creative wasn't installed (the card was recognized as "HD Audio" bei Windows 7). Installing the drivers didn't help.
If I install only one graphics card, the system runns fine and I can use the X-Fi and it's Software without problems.
If I replace the X-Fi by the PCIe Xtreme Audio from MSI, System runns fine.
If I use Win XP with the two GFX cards and the X-Fi, System runns fine.
    Can you help me?

    User....

    Hi there,
got the same problem if i use my two Nvidia GTX260.
    My system:
    Asus P6T
    I7 920 @ 3,8GHz
    2GB ram
    Gigabyte GTX260 OC Edition
    Nvidia GTX260
    X-Fi XtremeGamer
-System (Win7x64) takes ~0min to start.
    -Stuttering mouse, keyboard everything >.<
Deactivating the onboard sound doesnt help.
Newest Nvidia and Creative driver too =(
The system runs fine without the X-FI and two GTX260 no errors ect...
One GTX260 runs also fine with the X-FI
But two graphic cards and the X-FI..... **bleep** =/
I use debian as my main OS and it run still fine with both graphic cards and the x-fi...
so i think its just a driver problem.
Hope it will be fixed soon =/
If someone have any sugestions...please help us.
    Greetings from Germany also =D

Is there a big difference between Intel Iris Pro graphics and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory, is it worth paying an extra $200?

Software support of graphics card is key.   If no graphics card is mentioned in software specs, then it can be ignored.  Mostly games and high end image and video graphics software are affected.

  • Gathering CPU/RAM usage?

Hello everyone, I'm fairly new to Java but have a decent amount of C experience. I'm trying to build somewhat of a very low level monitoring tool in Java, but can't find out the simplest way to get current CPU/RAM usage. I've ran into many references to the Java Management Extensions (JMX), but can't find any basic documentation on any functions that might help me out.
If anyone can point me in the right direction on how to gather the CPU/RAM usage I will be very grateful, thanks for your time.

Theres no way to get this through the "MBeans"?
    Taken from this URL:
    http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/J2SE/jconsole.html#OSResources
"The JDK 5.0 extends the Operating System MBean to include certain OS resource information such as:
    * the process CPU time
    * the amount of total and free physical memory"
Doesn't that mean theres some way to directly get (at least) the RAM usage without having to write platform specific JNI code? Or am I missing something?

  • High kernel_task RAM Usage in Yosemite 10.10.1

    Hello All,
No matter what I'm running, I always have high RAM usage with kernel_task. I've looked around the other threads and never found a definitive solution. I wouldn't call it crippling to my system but I would like to resolve the issue. Below is a screenshot of my activity monitor, and my Etrecheck run. Please let me know anything I can do to reduce the RAM usage of this process.

  • CSS11800 - High CPU with Sticky and L3 rule

I have a customer who wants to maintain sticky between TCP80 and TCP443, so we selected a L3 content rule.
    content L3_www.ourcustomer.com
    vip address 1.2.3.4
    sticky-mask 255.255.128.0
    add service web004
    add service web005
    add service web006
    sticky-inact-timeout 10
    advanced-balance sticky-srcip
    active
The problem I see is that without a low inactivity timeout the CPU goes through the roof to 100%. Even with 10 minute inactivity timer it rockets to 60-80% CPU, but at least it isn't locked at 100% (which causes latency and other problems).
The customer is pushing 12Mbps with on average 5-10K connections. No sticky rejects or collisions and plenty of FCBs available. At any time the average number of used sticky entries is 8-10K.
I can make the CPU immediately drop like a rock to 1-10% by simply purging the sticky table or by removing sticky from the content rule. As a result I am confident the issue appears to be sticky related. I didn't find any bugs opened on this issue tho. We run sticky for quite a few customers and have rarely, if ever, seen anything like this before.
I did some testing in production and experienced this high CPU problem with 4.01.44.s, 5.01.69s and 6.10.405 and saw it on a CSS11150 before I moved the customer to a CSS11800 where we experience the same exact issue.
I have dozens of CSS11150s, CSS11800s, and a few CSS11500 series in production but never experienced this on any version of code before.
Has anyone seen this before? Due to "shopping cart" issues we need to maintain persistence between 80->443 transitions so I think I am stuck with sticky and a L3 rule.
Any thoughts would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Mike

I have also not seen an issue like this. Have you tried with changing the sticky inactivity timeout and did that help. You could find more information on how the entries are removed in the following document.

    Hi Ritesh,
To troubleshoot the high CPU Usage, you can also check these tools:
    1. Task Manager (built-in to the O.S.)
    2. Process Explorer

  • Is there is any difference between iPhone4 made for Ukraine and for India?

I would like to know about the hardware / software difference between iPhone4 made for Ukraine and for India.
I purchased my iPhone4 in Ukraine and now I'm in India, and here due to restart problem I visit to a local delear/shopkeeper and he replaced some parts of my device with damaged one (crack screen, etc etc) and told me that it is a scrap and need another iPhone4 to replace some parts of it. Now this cell is totally brick, I can't check the EMEI of that device {because now its not booting} and he didn't accept that he replace some/all parts of my device.
So, I want to know that is there is any way to locate these parts?

Apple does not sell iPhone parts. You no longer have an iPhone. You have an unsupportable frankenphone.
Go back to whoever opened it up and attempted to repair it. Your phone is not supportable here.

  • Is there a substantial difference between the macbook 2.0ghz and the 2.1gh?

    Hi
I have the 2.0ghz macbook, £699 from PCworld.co.uk and I've just spotted the 2.1ghz, white, priced at £789: I'm buying a macbook for my nephew so it would be good toknow which is better...
    http://tinyurl.com/2g2d4p
Is there a huge difference between these two computers?
I am a complete newbie to macs (although a complete convert as they rock!) but I'm really confused as mine says it's a 2.1 but the specs are for a 2.0. Am I just reading this wrong? I've copy/pasted this from my computer:
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: Mac
    Model Identifier: MacBook2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz

    SMC Version: 1.17f0
    Serial Number: W8734HN5Z5V
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
It says it's a macbook 2.1 but it has only a 2.0ghz processer, I am completely confused...
It's only another £90 so would it be worthwhile paying a little bit extra? Is the £789 macbook a better computer, will it last longer, perform better over time?
Lots of uestions, sorry for being a newbie, any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Karen

    Hey Karen -
I think that you misunderstood my comment. I was merely referring to the statement from your Hardware Overview that mentioned the fact that you indeed had a 2.0 MacBook to clarify the confusion that you had in reading your specs.
The processor speed is not an upgradable item. You would need to get a new MacBook in order to increase you processor speed.
The RAM (you have 1GB) and your Hard Drive (unknown size) are the only upgrades that can be made to your MacBook.
Don't waste your time with Mac for Dummies....instead, if you are famiar with using MS Windows, go here: http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/
    Hope this helps.

Hey. I have just noticed my Macbook Pro has some problems: it has a high CPU usage, high energy impact, and high temperature.
This still happens when the laptop is idle. The temperature's around 70Celcius. In activity monitor, it doesn't show any apps using significant energy, but you can see a drastic battery drain.

Hi, I'm using a late 2012 13" MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and a dual core i7 and I've been experiencing very high RAM usage for the last couple of weeks even though I'm not really doing anything. Here's a activity monitor screenshot
As you can see I'm only really using Chrome and Sublime Text (3). Twitter and Outlook are also open but don't take up that much (Twitter maybe but that just seems to be badly optimised and it's all gone when I close it).
    So, is this normal?

This is normal. The two most important things in that screenshot are 'Swap Used' (0 means you never ran out of RAM) and the Memory Pressure graph (everything green = good). For the rest the OS knows to handle RAM,

  • Is there any impact that apply Oracle CPU on standby and primary DB

We plan to apply Oracle April CPU on standby DB at this weekend. Then apply the same patch on primary DB next weekend. If I apply the patch on standby, then enable redo apply between primary and standby, is there any impact on primary DB. Theoretically, I don't think so. However, both DBs are production. I want to make sure there is no any impact by applying CPU in different time. Otherwise, I have to apply both DBs at the same time. Please advise. Thanks in advance.

I hope you read other people's post carefully. Don't pretend yourself is expert so that you can say whatever you want to say. This is the tech forum for Oracle technical people to ask question, seek help and so on. How do you know I didn't review document 278641.1 before I asked my question. Document 278641.1 only provide info on how to apply patch on primary and standby. Didn't say anything about applying the same patch on both DBs with data Guard at the different time. I just want to make sure If I apply patch on both DBs with one week difference, will this affect my primary database? Is there anything wrong here. If you paly in this forum as expert, please help people, not just look down people.
I suggest you review [url http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html]How To Ask Questions The Smart Way.
When you ask for help, state the platform, operating system, Oracle version and patch level, no matter whether it seems important to the question or not. It most often is important. You may not know the difference between Itanium and PA-RISC, but that is important for Oracle and important for someone doing administrative work on an Oracle database to know. You should also learn to search the internet for answers to common questions. Everyone here wants to help, but few want to spoon-feed.
When you have any kind of standby, that constrains what you can do to a primary, if you want the standby to work properly. You need to understand how things get from one to the other, and how to decide when to simply rebuild the standby from scratch - and that decision is based on your configuration and requirements. You don't want to be in some undefined configuration for any period of time.

  • Different readings between RivaTuner CPU Temp monitor and Bios Temp monitor

I just installed the RivaTuner temp plugin and it is reporting a core temp of 50C, CPU0 and CPU1 at 65C-66C. If I restart the PC and go to the BIOS the temp is being reported as 43C with a system temp of 42C. At most I would guess that 30 secs have elapsed since I viewed the temp in RivaTuner before checking the BIOS. Is this normal? Why the difference? Are my temps too high?

I will try to monitor the temperature with the chassis open tonight. I feel like there is a lot of blockage in there, but I don't know exactly how to tackle it. The PSU alone has a ton of wires in there and they are criss-crossing everywhere. I tried to zip tie them together as neatly as possible, but there is just a lot of crap in the middle of the case. I also have 3 HDD so that pretty much blocks the entire front fan. I could try using the top and bottom most mounting slots so that there is some air passage between 2 HDDs. The graphics card is also mounted in the top most PCIe slot. I could move that to the bottom one which should provide a better air channel. Other than that there isn't really much more that I can see doing. The case is a Tsunami Dream with the solid side. I could try modifying the side panel so that I can install another case fan. It currently has 2x 120mm fans, one rear and one front. I don't know what the CFMs are on them so I don't know if it is worth swapping them out for more powerful ones. Thanks for your help. I will run some more tests tonight. I did adjust the ratio in the bios so that I could run the RAM at 800mhz and I upped the RAM voltage to the 2.1v that Corsair recommended for it. Could those be affecting the temperature that much? Should I try restoring the RAM settings to factory defaults before trying again? Other than that I have done not other BIOS mods other than what was necessary for RAID.

  • Is there a compatibility issue between Adobe Camera Raw, CS5, and Windows 8.1?

I have a new computer with Windows 8.1.  I installed Photoshop CS5 (which runs fine under Windows 7) but now after editing images in camera raw and clicking on the Open Images button, it takes several attempts to pass the images on to open in Photoshop CS5.  Is there a fix for this compatibility problem?

Many thanks Catherina for your reply.
Actually I have now discovered the cause of the problem. My speakers are Boston Acoustics BA735 digital speakers. I discovered that there was an Analog out put from the sound card and by changing the speaker connections they are now working albeit in Analog whereas previously they were connected Digitally.
The new drivers supplied by Microsoft have obviously switched the output to analog.
Are there any Drivers available which would allow me to revert to normal digital working.
    Thanks again
