Is there a fax application in os 10.6

Question

I thought at one time I had discovered a fax application within my Mac system. Is there fax capability with OS 10.6, or was that something I had with earlier OS versions, on older computers?

Network 23's advice is correct. Mac OS X includes basic faxing capability, so no third-party software is needed for that. However, advanced faxing does require third-party software, such as PageSender (compatible with SL but not Lion), or 4-Sight Fax.
What current and recent Macs no longer include are built-in fax modems, ie, the hardware required to send a fax. A third-party fax machine or fax modem is needed.
A paid Internet faxing service such as eFax may be used instead. However, you must check carefully not only the price, but also the limitations. Most people who live or do business only in the US seem to have no idea that such services do not work in all countries, or indeed all cities.
As to free Internet faxing, in most cases it's worth less than the asking price. Some work only in US (and sometimes Canada), some don't seem to work at all, and all have some kind of limitation. If you send a fax once in a blue moon, maybe it's worth trying a few; otherwise, my advice is to look elsewhere.
