Is there a filter for a border that looks 'jagged'

I'm looking to pull out a piece of text from the body of a news story (actually, I'll re-create the text).  I want to put one of those "ripped" looking jagged borders around it so it looks like it was ripped out of the story.  Kay

Go to your local uhaul place ask them for 1 sheet of that blank newsprint they sell for wrapping breakables when you move.  Make some artsy tears.  Scan the torn piece.  Take it into photoshop, remove everything that isn't the paper, mexport as a png file to keep the alpha, bring into fcp, add type.

If you would like your NON-linked images to have a border, and only remove the border from linked images then this css:
    a img { border:none; }

Is there an app for the ipad that will allow you to access your mac via wifi or cell network.

Yep, two of the most popular apps are "LogMeIn Ignition" and "iTeleport." Check them out, they'll both set you back by about 30$ though.

Is there a format for a file that I can use for attaching a one page document with photos embedded that will open in everyone's email automatically?   I've tried PDF and Word, but PDF worked only in Mail.  Word worked in nothing.  I also tried copying and pasting the document but lost all formatting when just copied and pasted in email.  Is there a way to do this?

Are you sure PDF won't work? It should as what you're trying to do is pretty much what it is designed for (PDF - Portable Document Format). On a Mac anywone who receives the file should be able to see it in all its page layout glory by using the app Preview or Adobe Reader. Same on a PC, the file should be viewable as a PDF file using Adobe Reader and probably some other viewer (don't use PCs so not sure what other apps).
What application are you creating the file in and are you sure you're exporting it correctly in PDF format, fonts and images embedded?

You're right, thanks. Nuance seems to be doing this for a number of apps; Noterize similarly has been removed after being purchased by Nuance. Time will tell where they go with all the technology they've purchased.
    Regards.

Is there and App for the iPad that will show mu GPS position on a world map, even if I'm at sea?

GPS will show your position anywhere if your device has unobstructed view of the GPS satellites. The issue is that you must find a maps/charts that include all areas of the sea.
There is no mobile data connection required to use GPS on land or sea. Once again your issue is the availability of downloadable maps/charts for the areas you will be traveling.
Sorry, but you can't install an app like NAVIGON on an iPad without 3G cellular data connection:
    copied from NAVIGON app:
...can be installed on any iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPhone4S, iPhone5 or iPad device (the navigation function is only available on the iPad WiFi+3G)
Can I navigate with my mobile phone?
Answer:In principle yes. For mobile phones there are both Onboardnavigation solutions and Offboardnavigation solutions.
The following requirements must be fulfilled:
    •     The software must support the mobile phone. NAVIGON software
always comes with a compatibility list. The software is guaranteed
to work only for the mobile phones on this list.
    •     The mobile phone must have a GPS receiver. Many new mobile
phones come with a built-in GPS receiver. Otherwise you can use
an external GPS receiver which is connected to the mobile phone
           by cable or Bluetooth.
    •     It should be noted that an offboard solution incurs costs for using
the mobile phone network to communicate with the provider's server.

I used my iPhone maps it works very well. Is there an application for the iPad that could be used on a boat?

    Indeed :-)
This forum is riddled with questions by users that cannot get their computer to do what they want, *despite* the fact they use a very precise and (usually) unambiguous method of telling it want they want it to do -- a programming language. Making it comprehend *natural* language is, by any way of measuring, a number of degrees more difficult.
That said: in what way would a computer program (advanced or "dumb") be able to help the OP? Spell check is one -- but it's not a *fact* that anything written *badly* equals nonsense. In politics, for example, the most eloquent speakers still manage to make a fool of themselves :D The same goes for "grammar". Of course, bad grammar is more difficult to understand -- EVEN for a human. So a computer is bound to fail on that as well.
Fact checking then? I usually can't even find what I want in one go with Almighty Google (which seems to turn things around: if it cannot find "enough" web pages with the exact phrase you asked it, it automatically assumes you are interested in synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, and other *unrelated* stuff! Yeah THANK you but I want to find what I typed in!)
A good starting point would be to define in more detail what this hypothetical software *ought* to do -- that needs to be a bit more concrete than "I want it to do my job for me."

Thank you for the imput.  I don't know what you mean when you say LR doesn't use Adoble Camera Raw.  My LR2.7 is able to process raw files from my 20D.  I don't care if it does it with ACR or some other processing software.  The issue is whether whatever software is used by LR can be updated to deal with new camera raw files.  It is pretty annoying if it cannot be.  I would even pay a reasonable amount if that were necessary.
ACR is a plug-in for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements which enables users to work on raw images from supported cameras. All of that technology that is in that plug-in is part of the Lightroom program, the plug-in is not used by Lightroom. ACR must be updated approximately 4 times each year in order to add support for new cameras and to make other changes in the plug-in. In order to get those changes in Lightroom, it is necessary to upgrade the entire Lightroom program. Interim releases are made available to Lightroom users who have purchased the program. For instance, if you purchased Lightroom 2, then versions 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc. are all available to you at no cost. But when Lightroom 3.0 is released or 4.0 is released, then it is necessary for you to purchase an upgrade in order to continue to get the updates.

Dell only provide some rather old Windows drivers for this model, no Mac drivers at all.
Plug it in, you may get lucky but frankly I doubt it.

Yes you can buy whatever you want if your credit card is in good standing.
Before you buy, read the size of the download in iTunes/App/iBook Store.
Rule of thumb, you need to reserve about 10% of your total space.

Would appreciate if someone could help me with this. It doesn't have to be a free app.

Since there is no "drafts" folder on an iPhone for SMS's, not sure how something like that would work anyway. You can always copy to the notes app, then paste back yourself.

Of course not.  Number blocking must be done by your wireless provider.

  • Looking for a theme that looks like the default theme.

I'm looking for a theme that looks exactly like the default theme, but that doesn't use the colours of my gnome theme. Right now I'm using a dark gnome theme that looks great, but looks horrible with firefox. Anybody got any suggestions?
Alternatively, is there another way to make firefox ignore my gtk theme?

I don't like the way firefox themes look, I want the default theme, but without gtk coloring. Surely it must be possible?

  • Is there a filter for "missing photos"?

Can you search for missing photos from within a folder? I know there's the command that says "find all missing photos" but that delivers results for the entire catalog. I'd like to see the missing photos from just one folder and wonder if that's possible.

    jhackworth wrote:
Is there a way to show, in that folder, just the missing files.
    Yes.
    Approach #1:
    1. Find all missing photos - they will be rounded up into a collection, which will become the active source.
    2. Filter images to confine to those in folder of interest.
Note: you will need to specify folder of interest, since it won't automatically detect a selected folder...
    Approach #2:
    1. Find all missing photos, and drag into a regular collection, so collection name can be used in a filter/smart-collection.
    2. Select folder, and filter images to confine to those also in the missing photos collection.
Note: unfortunately, folder and collection names are only available in smart collections, not lib filters.
Even so, this sort of thing was super-easy in Lr4-, because selecting a "filtering" smart collection and a folder narrowed (filtered) the photo set. Adobe screwed up Lr5 by removing the ability to use smart collections as folder filters - now multiple photo-source selections can only widen the photo set (you get all photos from both sources). - thus making this sort of thing harder and less straight-forward.
    Still, there are ways...
Here is an example using approach #1 and text-meta plugin:
Note: it's the "all missing photos" collection being filtered by folder path.
But now that I've done all this work, why not just select all missing photos and remove them from the catalog? i.e. why do you need to do it folder by folder?
Hint: to remove from catalog whilst viewing collection, use splat-delete:
    * Windows: Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Delete
    * Mac: Cmd-Option-Shift-Delete
