Is there a final cut x memory bleed?

Hi folks,
I've been using FCX on a 2010 Mac Pro 12 core w/ 32 GB Ram over the last year.
In January of this year, I bought a nMP 12 core w/ 16 GB Ram. Both now on Yosemite and latest versions of FCX and Compressor.
The 2010 MP was on Mavericks previous to upgrade to Yosemite. New Machine was on Yosemite to start.
I typically edit analog SD footage and occasionally my own HD footage.
The 2010 MP used to sit around 16 GB of Ram being used while editing. Now it's chunking close to 29 GBs.
I don't use any fancy titles or anything. This is just basic scrolling through, cutting of footage out.
The nMP is using 15 of the 16 GBs Ram.
So both are slowly down significantly. Not cruising along as they should (or in the case of the 2010, how it used to run!).
Rebooting either will freshen things up.
I don't have background rendering on.
Editing to non-boot HDs etc..
permissions are repaired
The culprit is either Yosemite or FCX itself.
If this was a scientific study, the only difference is either Yosemite being installed or the latest versions of FCX and Compressor.
Either way, something isn't tickety boo and it's driving me nuts.
I saw this thread, but started a new one as that one is 5 pages long.
RAM usage / memory leak with FCPX?
Cheers,
Brian

If you run Activity Monitor, are you seeing anything (or very much) reported in Swaps Used?
As I recall the big change in memory management occurred with Mavericks. That's when we first started to hear about the benefits of compressed memory. The difference that many of us experienced is that Final Cut would use nearly all of the physical memory without any noticeable ht to performance.
However, there have been manny reports of the OS not releasing memory and associated slow-downs. Not sure whether it's the OS or the app's fault. But quitting and relaunching seems to straighten things out. I have also experienced instances when even quitting the app didn't free up the memory. In which case, the best remedy was sudo purge in Terminal.

• Is there any final cut express 4.0.1 update available?

Is there any final cut express 4.0.1 update available? I want a RELIABLE source to update this, preferably by APPLE, Inc.
I'm VERY disappointed that APPLE does not have that on the website. I SUPPORTED you by buying a product and in return you do NOT have a place for us to install upgrades especially if consumers like me got a new laptop. That is just plain MEAN. I mean, REALLY.
Thank you and I hope to get this as soon as possible.

Final Cut Express was discontinued 3 years ago (June 2011). It was replaced by Final Cut Pro X.
FCE is no longer supported by Apple. That does not mean it won't run on Lion, Mt. Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite, however with each successive upgrade to OS X it becomes less & less likely that FCE will be installable or even run properly after being installed, because it is so much older than the current versions of OS X. That said, the FCE 4.0.1 update is still available through Software Update provided you already have FCE 4.0 installed on your Mac. The 4.0.1 update is not available "publicly," meaning you can't search for it on Apple's website and find it; FCE 4.0 has to already be installed on your Mac and you have to update it via Software Update on your Mac.
One forum contributor DID find a way to download the 4.0.1 update without using Software Update, see this thread -> Where can I download Final Cut Express 4.0.1?
My advice is to move to Final Cut Pro X since you have a Mac running Mavericks (10.9.5).
I understand your frustration at having purchased some software and now you can no longer use it. However, obsolescence is a natural part of the technology world. FCE is now obsolete and has been replaced by Final Cut Pro X. If you have OS X Lion or any later version of OS X installed on your Mac, you should be looking at Final Cut Pro X.

• Is there a Final Cut Pro update price? I have FCP 6

Is there a Final Cut Pro update price? I have FCP 6

No, FCP X is a completely different app and everyone has to pay the full price.
No educational discounts etc.

• Is there a Final Cut tutorial pdf to go with the footage on the DVD

Hey There,
As you might imagine I'm new to all things mac just coming to final cut from Premiere Pro. When I was installing FCP Studio 2 the other night I could have sworn it mentioned a PDF tutorial to go with the content on the Apple Pro Training Final Cut Studio DVD Tutorial disk that was included with the install disks. My question is: Did I just misunderstand and there is nothing to go with the dvd ? Or is it somewhere and I just can't find it?
Thanks
Mark

This was helpful, but didn't really answer the question. Pressing Tab when I"m on the google Location Bar takes me to the search text box, which is what my motivation for writing the question was, but I notice that on many pages, it doesn't work. This page, for instance.
I went to the about:config page and changed the accessibility:tabfocus from 1 (tab through every element) to 5 (only tab to the text boxes and links) but it seems to still tab through every element.

• Are there any Final Cut Pro 4 conflicts with 10.3 Panther?

I just bought FLIP4MAC software which will allow me to save my Final Cut Pro 4 Quicktime movies as Windows Media Files (I make short comedy films), but neglected to see that it only works with 10.3 Panther. I've been running 10.2.8 for over a year and it doesn't have any conflicts with FCP 4 that I can see. I've purchased the 10.3 installation disks already. Any conflicts I should be aware of before I jump in and install?
Thanks.

AS long as ur not in the middle of a project, I'd go ahead and install.

• Final Cut Express vs. Final Cut Pro

I assume a topic like this has already been discussed, but I would like to know what to do in my scenario.
I'm currently a high school junior, and I'm taking a media course in school where I have learned to use Final Cut Pro. Next year, I'll be taking it again, still using Final Cut Pro, and I may want to do some editing work at home, though it is not required.
The problem there is Final Cut Pro is very expensive, probably isn't sold without everything else in Studio box set, and I only have a 1.42 GHz SuperDrive eMac, with 1 GB RAM.
I've seen Final Cut Express, and I feel it might be the best thing to get at a reasonable price. I want to start making video projects outside of school, but iMovie does not allow me to do much. Plus, I won't be using HD, so there's no issue of it there. Could someone tell me what are the pros and cons in using FCP over FCE, and what will I not be able to do in FCE?

I think there's a lot of info on this subject on the FCE page on the Apple website.
This page: http://www.apple.com/finalcut/index.html should do the trick for you.
Bottom line is if you're going to be working in DV or HDV FCE should be more than enough for your needs, at least till you're making enough $$$ to upgrade. I know if FCE had been available when I left school I would have had the best tools around.
Have you looked into the Educational edition of FCS, if you can't bear the downgrade? Might be what you need.
Best of luck in your career.

• Advantages of using Final Cut Pro for animation

Is there anyone out there using Final Cut Pro 6 that could tell me what they feel are the advantages of using FCP 6 for animation as compared to Final Cut Express 3.5?

Okay, cool. I was gonna use that in the first place but I'm still learning it and so far all I know how to do on it is clean up the audio. I'm going through a Soundtrack Pro book right now and had to stop because I couldn't continue without a microphone. I'm getting that microphone this week and by the time I have the next batch of audio files to edit I'll know what I'm doing in Soundtrack Pro.
Thanks for the suggestion, I was seriously coming back to this question to elaborate for the sake of bumping this.
Oh yeah, if Soundtrack Pro is the answer, is it possible to bypass FCP on the way in AND on the way out?

• Hand shake correction in Final Cut Pro 10.1.1

I see that there is this option available in iMovie but was wondering whether its there in Final Cut Pro 10.1.1. I have a number of clips that I would like to use in my project but they are rather shaky. Is there any way to correct them within the application itself or do I have to go through iMovie first?
Thanking you,
Mitaka27

The standard setting for Stabilize works pretty well but there are a few options that are user selectable.

• Final Cut X, Events Gone

Hi there, use Final Cut X on my MacBookPro with a WD 2 TB Raid. Up to now everything worked fine... tried to install the new update, wich failed to load in the app store... and now I have a BIG problem with my Events. Final Cut starts normal and is reading everything - but when its finished with loading from one second to another my whole WD Disk ist not availlable anymore in Final cut. It´s´there in the Finder - the Event and Project Folder is there - everything is as it should be - but Final cut doesnt show me anymore my Projects and Events! I´m in middle of production and this is a really BIG BIG Problem or should I say BUG!? Would be fine if anyone can help me out!
thx

@Tom: I dont know - but all that I know is that even after reinstalling Final cut its all the same - it loads up everything just fine - every project I had edited so far - then the whole "scratch disk" my 2 tb WD disappears... no more projects, no more events - even if I want to reimport some files of a new project I have just started (so its not that a mess) final cut gives me just my internal HD and another 1TB I have in the system... Again in the Finder everything is there on my WD - the folders the projects - does anyone know how to get back to my projects that I have edited?
@apple: this is not at least funny! (and I really started to like the new final cut!)

• Will Final Cut Studio 1 run on new silver imacs running leopard?

looking for advice or answers to this dilemma of mine...
i've got a client who needs to run final cut pro 5(client owns intel upgraded version) using basic cutting features almost as an off-line editor to send his edit files and media to me to on-line edit. have been looking at used imac and have found a g5 imac but it seems too expensive compared to the price of the new imacs.
so my question.. is anyone out there running final cut studio 1 (FCP 5 et. al.) successfully on an intel machine using the leopard OS (ideally new gen. imac)? or should i bite the bullet and buy the used g5 imac at a ridiculously inflated price?
thanks in advance,
grant

I have a Quad G5 and an 8core 3ghz, both running FSC2 side by side. G5 is a FCS upgrade to FCS2 with the 8 core a brand new FCS2. The G5 still rocks, I have set renders going of the same HD edit and the 8 core wins by a tiny margin. The G5 has no problems but the 8 core fell apart with the 2.01 update. Compressor problems!
I thought about selling the G5 and buying another Intel but it hasn't let me down once in 18 months so I'm keeping it.

• ANY luck with final cut studio 5 and quickktime 7?

what is the deal with quicktime 7? I am constantly reading about problems with it. I want to upgrade to Final Cut Pro 5 and quicktime 7, but am afraid to because of all the issues Ive been reading about. There are many different issues... but the common denominator is that they all seem to be related to quicktime 7.
Here is my question:
Is ANYONE out there running final cut studio with the latest version of quicktime 7 with NO Problems? If i get enough yes answers, I may just go ahead and upgrade. If not, Im definitley going to wait until these problems are fixed, or for the next versions to come out. Thanks in advance...

i know that fcp 5 requires quicktime 7...right now i have final cut 4.5 hd with quicktime 6.5.2......im just trying to get an idea of how many people have final cut 5 with quictime 7 with no problems, and how many may be having problems. If there are too many people with problems, i was going to wait until the next version of final cut and quicktime come out before i upgrade. I was hoping for a few more responses. Thank you both very much for your response.. anyone else?

• Looking to purchase a new 13" MacBook Pro with 512GB SSD memory and 8GB ram. Main purpose is to run Final Cut Prowithout being at my desk. Is there's need to upgrade to the 16GB to make Final Cut Prorun more smoothly?

I was planning on buying a new 13 inch MacBook Pro with 512 GB memory and 8GB RAM. The main purpose for this purchase Is to be able to run Final Cut Pro anywhere I want to. Should I upgrade to 16 GB of RAM with the added expense and wait time or is that overkill?

8GB should be plenty . . . though as with most things in life, it all depends on exactly what you are doing. If you intend to edit long, highly complex projects loaded with effects and multicam clips you can't get enough RAM.
For over 3 years, I and many others, have been using 4GB with no problems.

• Massive memory usage when using latest version of final cut, 10 minutes after restart.

Hey I am really struggling with using Final Cut Pro X and I suspect there is some software issue.
I am editing a one minute video clip, the video files are 1080 h264. I restart my computer and only open final cut. After 10 minutes of editing I cant barely navigate my computer anymore as it is going so slow, until eventually I have to force reboot my computer. I can scarcly export anything out of final cut, when I do my computer feels like its about to die and if it exports I seem to get broken frames and/or missing media.
I reinstalled my mac only about 2 months ago.
System specs.
Mac book pro.
13-inch, Late 2011
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
On my previous mac book pro (early 2010, 4 gm ram), running snow leopard and previous versions of final cut I was able to edit 3, 1 hour documentaries with very little problem, but now I cant even manage a one minute clip.
Not sure what to do. Here is a screen shot of my memory usage. Im getting massive swap memory and lots of inactive memory. It seems very strange. Especially after only 10 minutes running only final cut.

FCP is only using 409 MBs of memory out of your 4 GBs. But whatever else you have open is using up virtually all the physical RAM you have. This is forcing the memory manager to page memory out to the disk-based VM file. That's a major reason for major slowdowns.
You have 4 GBs of RAM. How many applications are you running concurrently? If you look at Page outs: you will note the positive number in parentheses. That means your computer is hitting the hard drive a lot because the memory demands are too high. If possible cut down on how many concurrent applications you run or put more RAM into the computer, if that's possible.

Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently. It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster. What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent. It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

• Is there a solution to Final Cut's EPIC delay?

I have been using Final Cut pro x for almost a year now and I am just blown away by it. I can't believe how slow it can run, even after I upgraded to 16gb of ram.
I am using Final Cut Event manager to manage my files, I have an external HDD with my files on there, I have more than 20% free space on my computer and HDD, 16gb Ram, I'm not using any other programs, but STILL Final Cut is so delayed. If I even just drag the cursor, the spinning beach ball comes up...
Its driving me crazy and I Just don't understand- for this much money how can it work so poorly? I know its not my computer because its brand new and works fine with other applications... I even just upgraded Final Cut x so I know its the most recent version...
It seems like Final Cut runs extra slow when my externall HDD is plugged in but I obviously need it plugged in when I use final cut.
I checked out how my computer is running and it says theres 12gb RAM free even when Final Cut is open, so it can't be the RAM...
Literally 1 hr projects are taking me hours and hours to complete because of how delayed Final Cut is.. I'm not even color correcting or anything, just editing clips but when I do anything the beach ball ALWAYS comes up for atleast a second... Is there a solution to this? Please and thank you.
(P.S. I went through andynick's checklist and did everything besides the PROXY files, I just cant imagine this would fix my massive problem...)
