Is there a good but free word processor that's Mac compatible?

I don't know where else this question would belong so I just put it here. So, my question is: Is thier a free (but decent) word processor that's Mac compatible that I can download off of the internet? I've already used up my free trial of "Pages" that came with my iMac. I'd also like it to be able to save and print off text documents and also be PC compatible as well.

Hi, you already have Text Edit, I use BEAN//it's pretty good, but you can Google your requirements and there are quite a few "freebies"

  • Best free Word Processor that's compatible with Microsoft Word?

hey guys, i'm looking at moving over to the Mac in a couple days and i just need to know the best free Word Processor that can open .doc files. 99% of my docs made in Word are of the 97-2003 variety and not 2007's .docx.
    appreciate any  help.
    thanks

Well, in terms of best, it might be argued the best would be MS Word for Mac (MS Office for Mac 2011) as it uses the same native format as the window's version of office.
Others that are compatible include Apple's own Pages - http://www.apple.com/apps/pages/
Then there are the free offerings, like openoffice - http://www.openoffice.org/ and others.
I do not honestly know if there is one single "best" as there are so many possible specific features and formating oddities in MS Word that it is impossible to say that any one otherwise generally MS-Word-compatible program is guaranteed to be 100% compatible with your specific documents.

  • I own Adobe CS4 for PC, but recently purchased a Mac. Can my license be transferred to a download that is Mac compatible?

No, it cannot. Platform swaps only for current versions, meaning CS4 and I'm afraid you are long past any upgrade eligibility, too. that and of course CS4 is not compatible with current versions of OSX. So before endlessly wasting time, simply sign up for Creative Cloud.

i need to get at least itunes 10.1 for my ipod but it keeps saying that my mac doesnt have the software for it what do i do?

You need to be running Mac OS X 10.5 or newer to get iTunes 10. This OS version won't run on a G3.
Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 are available on DVD. Mac OS X 10.6 requires an Intel Mac.

  • TS1702 I love my various Apple products, but "Pages" word processor: not so much

Just purchased "Pages" because my prior word processor on my new iPad decided to stop sending emails
It worked for a few months, then decided to hate me and do strange things.
I am already having this problem with Pages, after just 5 minutes of buying and downloading it.
I do what it says to do, and nothing happens
I'm working with an Apple desktop to see if it arrives at my email address as I had hoped, but was very saddened to see did not happen.
Do I have to wait several hours before it arrives at its email destination?
Also, all I wanted to do was chage the title of the document
I touch it and nothing happens
It wants to remain being called "blank"
    again
There are no instructions I could find to help with this
I am not particularly computer literate, but don't hate me just because I hate technology.
I use Apple because I like that it rarely causes me problems.
For some reason, the app store is not my friend.
I've also fired off a request for help from Apple directly, but figured I'd sent this out as well, to see what others can tell me.
Besides crapping on me, of course, because I am not a computer-loving-person, and don't understand what others think is easy.
    Cheers,
    Paul

I don't have the Pages app myself, but there is some help for the app here : http://help.apple.com/pages/ipad/1.6.1/
    Emailing a document : http://help.apple.com/pages/ipad/1.6.1/#tan72489eaa
It looks like you should be able to rename a document by tapping its name on the document selection screen - from here :
Tap its name, and then type a new one.
If you want to quickly delete the current name that appears in the field, tap the “x” on the right side.

  • How do I change the default word processor that Firefox opens my downloads in?

I deleted the one that I originally set (Works Word Processor), and can not open any documents until I change this setting to Microsoft Word. I get an error message saying "[file name] could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences." Okay, but how?

  • Is there a good hypercam for iMac? That is free?

I am looking for a good hypercam for an imac, for recording videos of my games, and posting on youtube. Thank you.

Snapz Pro X or iShowU are your best options. They are not free, but neither of them require selling first born children either.

  • Word processors that don't lose data?

I'm about to get my first iPad. My wife, who goes back to the iPad 1, just lost hours of work yesterday to a corrupted file. In both our cases, the most important business-like use cases are word processing.
    Features we both want include:
Doesn't rely on internet connectivity to work.
Has an AutoSave that works. Failing that, has a really simple UI for saving a file (in particular, one that doesn't require entering a new file name).
Has a Save As that works. Failing that, has some other way to make snapshots, preserving one version of document while one goes ahead and tries out further edits.
Saves documents in a format that Microsoft Word is happy to read and write.
We differ in how completely seamless we want Microsoft Word interoperability to be. I'd be happy to read/write .txt files, and have a separate program that handles .docx files well but suffers from other limitations. She wants something that plays nicely with .docx. Neither of us is relying much on formatting beyond basics such as italics, bold, and bullet points.
Is there anything that actually meets our needs?    Thanks!

Not a big deal, but when I saw this, I wondered if it hit the forums as well as the store.
I see they have since removed the entire thread from the forum...
Could be. I ran across several stories in my Pulse feed about it, including one that reported they were backing it out. I'm wondering if it was the result of a badly written SQL script that hit more tables than they wanted? Either way, pretty bizarre.

  • Is there software (paid or free) to monitor temps for Mac?

I have one program now that shows me cpu utilization percentages on my two cores, but what is available to show me how hot they are getting or even the har drive and motherboard?

    starbux48 wrote:
Great!  One more question.  Does anyone know what is good/acceptable temp range for either cpus or hard drive?
CPU doing light/medium work shouldn't get much over 70C
    HD more like 40-45C

  • Does anyone have a suggestion for a word processor that works on iPad and iMac now that pages is worthless?

I'd prefer it to be cheaper than microsoft office, but I'm willing to pay for something with such revolutionary features as a format bar and a spellchecker that will learn proper nouns?

Pages 4.3 should still be in an iWorks folder within your Applications folder.
That should still work as before if you didn't update the iPad app.  Even if you did- better to have a workable option on ONE platform, right?  And you can export from Pages 5 as a 4.3 doc, so there's still some interoperability there.
Please remember to tell Apple what we need from them at:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/pages.html

  • Anyone know of a word processor that saves files directly on iPad?

As the title says, I'm looking for an app that can word process on the iPad. This app must be able to save locally and save to an online service such as Dropbox or iCloud. Sometimes I do not have access to wifi, which is why I need to be able to save files locally. Thanks!

    You can try Quickoffice Pro.
    To save locally: Quickoffice
To saved to cloud: Box.net, Sugarsync, Dropbox and Google Documents

  • New MBP should there be a word processor?

OK perhaps I'm a fool, but I have a new MBP having turned from a life of PCs, There are some Graphics/CAD programs that I need to run with Windows that I'm about to install. However, I cannot find a word processor in the Mac prior to any future use of Windows e.g. Word, there's no sign of the thing called 'Pages' nor of the old iWorks programs - don't MBPs come with a word processor?
This MBP was a replacement after I returned my recent purchase for the new Penryn processor model of the same cost. Having only used the previous item for a few days it had a trial run of MS Word. There doesn't appear to be such a thing installed in the new model.
Any guidance from you good folks?
    Graeme

    Hi Graeme,
The MS Office Test Drive was only for 30 days anyway (and tended to create problems for folks who bought MS Office and installed it without first deleting the trial version).
There is basic word processing available with TextEdit, which is in your Applications folder.
Pages is part of iWork (which also includes Keynote and Numbers), which is not free - you need to purchase that from Apple.
You might also consider the free NeoOffice suite, or purchase MS Office.
    Hope this helps...

  • Pages: Is there a way to make lines independent, like a real word processor

There are so many things that infuriate me about Pages. Save As.. missing, autosave, etc which are NOT like 99% of other apps on the Mac.
    Specifially (today):
I have a letter in Pages. It’s a standard business letter you have see 1m times.
After the first line of the address, at the top of the letter, I insert a carriage return and BINGO, the tabs in the middle of the letter are suddenly all messed up.
    Grrrrrr.
Is there a way to make lines independent in Pages? I have this crazy belief that letters are not Web Pages, not HTML, and that an extra line somewhere should not reformat following lines way down the page.
Alternately, is there some 3rd party word processor that works like the old Apple Works, with graphics and tables you can recommend?
    Thanks

Save As is still there, hold down the option key as you go to the File menu. This is not Pages, it is Mountain Lion.

Then you are doing something wrong, probably pounding away at spaces, tabs and returns to position things. Turn on invisibles to see what is going on:
Menu > View > Show Invisibles
If you have strings of tabs, spaces and returns that is the problem.
Is there a way to make lines independent in Pages?
Yes, hit the return key. Like every other Word Processing program.

Time to learn Pages. AppleWorks is dead. Stop pining for it. This is a case of user error and instead of blaming Pages, it would pay to find out what you have done and stop doing that.
Pages, except for the fancy DTP features, tables and charts works like most other Word Processing apps. Just a case of learning new tricks. My guess is you have other stuff going on.

  • HT202879 Other Word Processors than Pages? & why do we have to pay for an upgrade that is incomplete?

    I am very unhappy.
In order to access my documents from iCloud I have to upgrade to Mavericks (free, alright) and the new Pages, for which I have to pay.
The new Pages (and Numbers etc) does not have the same functionality as the one I have been using - yet I have to pay for it. Alright, Apple promises to upgrade in the next six months and add the new functionality. This is not good enough.
This was a very unpleasant surprise today - when I went to my document that I have been working on on my iPhone and my Mac at various times during the day and the Mac one had changed to 'Untitled 47' and the version on my iPhone would not open on my Mac unless I upgraded to the new Pages - $19.99 - and to OSX Mavericks - free - but I don't want to upgrade yet. And I don't want to pay for a new version of Pages that clearly does not have the same functionality(according to the user comments and the apple page that  this discussion is about).
I have praised Apple to high heaven for the functionality of iCloud. But this really really annoys me.
If there's anything I hate its a company I am relying on forcing me to upgrade before they've sorted out the bugs.
I am definitely considering changing to a different company's word processor - if only they had a word processor that I could use on my Mac and iOS devices.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks Tom! Following your advice I posted a (shorter) version at feedback.
And thanks for those hints. Yes I've been looking at those ones.
IA Writer and Byword both can use the iCloud.
    Writeroom only syncs using Dropbox.
Of course they're very minimal apps compared to Pages, or Word.
    I feel very depressed.
Perhaps I will have to use one of these and then import into Word for final editing.
Believe it or not, for a minute I thought MS Word might be a contender for iOS syncing - because there is this thing called Office 365. But look at the reviews.
    https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/office-mobile-for-office-365/id541164041
I really don't want to deal with all the problems of updating to Mavericks just now.
