Is there a good place to learn about migrating to a new mac

i am moving into a new 6 core from my dual 2.6 - i want to bring over about 50% of my apps - i am not really worried about other files as thats pretty straight forward and will allow me to do alot of new organizing. is there a good tutorial etc on the applications part of this process - or is it just follow the start up procedure and it gets you there.
thanks for advice...
Mr C

A new 6-core will boot to 64-bit kernel by default, which can be a little faster if ALL your extensions are 64-bit.
Don't bring your System Drive forward. Use the factory-installed System or re-install from the factory discs.
You should re-install all your Applications from their original Discs, and chase down all the current updates online.
Your new Mac has tremendous processing power. Consider setting up a System/Applications/Paging drive that has NO user files whatsoever on it (i.e, move your Home folders OFF the System Drive). This will give you faster performance by reducing competition System <-> User files.

    Yes.
You can authorize up to 5 computers to play itunes music ( pre-itunes plus).  There is no limit on itunes plus ( all itunes music for the past several years) and imported music.
You can sync as many ipods/ipads/iphones as you like to each of your computers.

  • HT4927 I have just downloaded iPhoto from the app store. The photo library from my old laptop was backed up on an external hard drive and I retrieved the photos from there.  Now when I open the photos on my new Mac Book Pro, they are small - am I missing

I have just downloaded iPhoto from the app store. The photo library from my old laptop was backed up on an external hard drive and I retrieved the photos from there.  Now when I open the photos on my new Mac Book Pro, they are small - am I missing something?
I am using 10.8.2 Mountain Lion btw

I dragged the Photo library icon from the backup drive on to iPhoto on the laptop
That means you imported one Library to another.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
So the reason you're seeing small photos is because you're seeing the iPhoto thumbnails from the back up library.
    So, what to do?
Do you still have the back up? If so, trash this bunged up library and restore from the back up again. HOw to restore will depend entirely on how you made the back up, but no version of restoring includes importing the library.

  • About to buy a new Mac Pro

A few months ago I posted a very simlar question, but can't find it anymore.
I'm ready to purchase a new Mac Pro, now I have a 2008 8 Core 2.8GHz with 10 gig ram and was looking at the latest 8 core with a lesser speed of 2.4. GHz and cannot find a benchmark comparison of those two models. The closest I found was at Barefeat's site, where it show a chart with the difference of 6 seconds exporting 50 JPGs out of Aperture, 68 seconds on the new 8 core and 62 seconds on my 2008. My opinion is that the difference doesn't worth a $3,500 dollars purchase, unless there are numerous advantages I'm overlooking.
Another idea was to double the ram on mine and get a new video card, planing to keep my 2008 as a server in case I buy a new one.
Need advice and suggestions, making a decision this weekend before something else comes up and spend the money . As I said, purchasing a new one is not an issue, just want to make sure is worth it.

Mac Pro 2009 and later have Multi-Threading and improved memory, so their specs for compute power are near double what 2008 and previous models were:
Primate Labs has posted Geekbench results for all the Mac Pro models since 2006. Here are some of the numbers in 32-bi/64-bit modes:
    2.0 GHz 4-core 2006, 4011/4445
    2.66 GHz 4-core 2006, 5178/5865
    2.8 GHz 4-core 2008, 5650/6456
    3.0 GHz 4-core 2006, 5768/6567
    2.66 GHz 4-core 2009, 8265/9226
    2.8 GHz 4-core 2010, 8629/9723
    2.93 GHz 4-core 2009, 9072/10072
    2.8 GHz 8-core 2008, 9105/10523
    3.0 GHz 8-core 2007, 9172/10783
    3.0 GHz 8-core 2008, 9460/11153
    3.2 GHz 4-core 2010, 9829/10279
    3.33 GHz 4-core 2009, x/11475
    3.2 GHz 8-core 2008, 10108/11807
    3.33 GHz 8-core 2009, 10304/11476
    2.26 GHz 8-core 2009, 11831/13323
    2.4 GHz 8-core 2010, 12722/14083
    3.33 GHz 6-core 2010, 14049/15781
    2.66 GHz 8-core 2009, 14330/16034
    2.93 GHz 8-core 2009, 15529/17608
    2.66 GHz 12-core 2010, 20226/22733
    2.93 GHz 12-core 2010, 21661/24333
    from: http://www.lowendmac.com/deals/best-mac-pro-prices.html
This chart shows that to EQUAL what you have now, buy a 2.93GHz FOUR-Core 2009 or later.
The real "sweet spot" in the current offerings is the six-core at only 1.5 times the entry models instead of 2x or 3x. (It's a build-to-order of the four-core.)
In case of a tie, always choose more MegaHertz over more processors.

  • I am about to migrate from iMac (10.5.8) to the newest iMac. What is the OS version needed on the source mac to migrate to the new mac?

When I tried migrating from iMac (10.5.8) to the newest iMac the target mac said I needed the latest OS on the source mac. I will install Snow Leopard on the source mac, will this do the trick? Or do I need to install Mountain Lion?

I would forget about using any Migration system as all older programs you have on the older Mac, all PowerPC programs, won't work or migrate to the new system. Just network them over your home LAN and Copy your personal files over to the new Mac.
But if you are Dead Set on using the Migration systems then the old Mac will need Snow Leopard installed.

  • Question about transfering documents to new mac

If i had bought a new mac i was wondering if there was a way to transfer all my music and documents from my old one to my new one possibly through USB or some easy way. Doesnt matter how it gets done but as long as it is safe and easy. please let me know.

This article explains the best way to do it.
Target Disk Mode is another solution.
Either way you'll need a 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable.

  • Is there a good place to get REAL support?

Im planning to buy Adobe Flash Builder.
But Im seeing that it lacks totally in support and stuff.
Is there anywhere else to get support?

    Hi,
Enterprise Support can definitely help you for any installation related issues as a free support. For any other technical feature or configuration related issue you would need to buy a support plan [may be per incident or any other plan].  Details about various plan offerings are here and contact information can be found here.: http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/contact.html
Also, for Flash Builder there's a very good documentation base here : http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash-builder/documentation.html
This should help you but in case you have any query please at above mentioned numbers and  concerned team be able to help you out. In case the question needs support plan they would let you know accordingly.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,

  • Is there a good book or tutorial about building a website in AS3?

    I haven't seen any.

There's one book Flash Professional 8 Beyond the Basics that walks the reader through a step by step process of building a website using AS2.  I was just hoping someone had done the same thing for AS3.  It's not such a big deal really I have a couple of good AS3 books and I've seen some great tutorials at Lynda.com and other places.  I'm able to piece together simple sites as it is.  I wonder if someone has something like this in the works to come out soon, It seems like it's a niche waiting to be filled by a good writer.

Here are a few good ones:

    Welcome to Java!
p.s. -- is Java's pass by reference the
same as pass by address? or by value? Wherever it says "reference", think that it says "pointer".
You'll get out of much trouble (especially what comes to passing references (pointers) to methods and reference (pointer) variables).
Java is 100% pass-by-value, where "values2 are either primitive types (ints, floats, chars) or references (pointers). You can never have 'direct' access to objects like in C++.

  • Can you recommend a good source for learning about the Environment

Rather than post a bunch of obviously uninformed thread topics, I would really appreciate some recommendation of some books, DVDs, online vids, etc.
I've figured out and executed some of the basics such as playing the arpeggiator and the midi delay, and recording the output of the arpeggiator/delay to a track, but, obviously, there's a whole lot more (understatement of the year so far?)
The environment seems to be a snakepit of danger - don't want to screw up any projects.
Any recs would be greatly appreciated.
