Is there a guide to the new Photos application

Having suffered through the loss of perfectly usable applications like Aperture and iPhoto, now we are presented with a further iteration "Photos".
Corruption city here, and before I launch into Photos, is there such a thing as a guide or on-screen manual or whatever?
Steve Jobs must be turning in his grave.

There is the Photos Online-Help, see:  Photos Help
And there is a recent book in the "Take Control" series:
I have not read this book yet, but the series is usually very good:
"Photos for Mac: A Take Control Crash Course," penned by Jason Snell, formerly of Macworld and now at Six Colors.

  • The new Photo application only goes to 50% after pushing the "Getting Started" button. Is there a work-a-round?

I've tried unsuccessfully to move over to the new Photos application.  Every time I press the get started button it does well until it reaches 50%.  There it hangs.  I do have a large number of raw & jpg images in my pictures directory, but iPhoto seemed ok with it previously.  I did leave it running over night and it was still at 50% the next morning.  I am running on a 2011 MBP 17" running OS X 10.10.3.  I have 400G of free space.  I'm ok to throw away my old iPhoto library.  I only used it for organizing.  I use Adobe PS & LR for editing. I want to be able to do a similar thing with the new Photo Application.  Timeline the photos, send them to iCloud and distribute them to my devices ... iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch

  • How do I move a photo into an album in the new Photos application?

How do I move a photo into an album in the new Photos application?

The simplest way is to show the Sidebar at all times - you can reveal it with options-command-S  ⌥⌘S.
With the sidebar visible, you can simply drag the photos from the Moments or other albums to the album in the sidebar. You can select and drag multiple photos at a time by selecting the first photo, holding down the shift key and selecting more photos.  If the album does not yet exist, select the photos and press ⌘N for "File > New album" to create a new album with the selected photos.

  • HELP - with the new Photos application on Mac

I was working on getting the photos ready and now I have a lot of pics to the new Photos and now have many duplicates, how can I remove them without having to purchase additional software ? Thanks I also need to get this right ASAP

ok Thank you but one other question have you updated your iPhoto to the New Photos? if you did then in settings how do you have yours so a copy of a picture deleted but you don't want it to come back because iI have deleted a lot of pictures and now they are back what the heck is up with that? and Here is what I mean by settings this first pic is the General settings
this second picture is iCloud in settings
so how do I make it so if I already have the picture deleted it doesn't come back in for duplicates or whatever happened! thanks Also I forgot to tell you I did not migrate the pictures from iPhoto to Photos was I suppose to do that?

  • IPhoto completed import but now photos aren't there - yet "faces" shows the new photos??

    Hi,
    First post!!!
So I just got a macbook pro - transferred a folder of photos from my external hard drive which show on Macbook HD.
I then imported these photos into iPhoto and got a message saying import complete - at which point iPhoto crashed and I had to restart. Now these newly imported photos are not anywhere in my library and cannot be seen in iPhoto except in the "faces" tab - it tells me there are 748 photos I need to add faces to.
How can this be?? Photos not in my linrary yet the faces option seems to know there are photos there.
I am new to OS and am probably missing something really simple but any help from you knowledgable folk would be greatly appreciated.
As a side note - from being a Windows user for the past 15 years I am finding the Mac to be utterly brilliant so far in every other way. So simple and intuitive. Makes me wonder why I never bought a Mac years ago!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

  • Can I merge multiple iPhoto libraries in the new Photo's app. This was not possible in iPhoto but is possible in Aperture.

Now that iPhoto is 'Photos' on 10.10.3 is it possible to merge multiple iPhoto libraries. It is possible to this this in Aperture but not in iPhoto (I'm using 10.10.2 and can't upgrade until other software I use is qualified for 10.10.3). Here's the deal - I  changed my drive to an SSD and backed up my old hard drive (which had the original iPhoto library on it. I did a clean install with my new drive so iPhoto created a new (blank) library. This upgrade was done a few months ago so now I have 2 different iPhoto libraries. Note that the newer library is connected to iCloud and if I was to 'Switch Libraries' it will delete my current photo stream. There is a way to do this manually - I could switch to the old library and locate the root folders in the 'newer library', move them to a new folder and import. This procedure is awkward and not my preferred route. So if there's anyone using the new 'Photos' app on 10.10.3 please let me know thanks!

To merge the libraries manually use "File > Export".
To save the high quality originals, set the export panel like this, with "Kind Original":
If you have edited versions with added titles, caption, places, etc, use these export settings to save your work:

  • How do I get the new photos albums from my imac to sync to my iphone?

Last week my iMac did the software update that replaced iPhoto on my iMac with the new Photos application.
Since then, I have migrated all my iphoto library to the Photos library and have been able to further sort my photos in the albums area.
I have backed up my iPhone 6, and then completed a sync so it would be updated accordingly with the photos app as opposed to the previous iPhoto app. In iTunes everything looks fine, in Photos everything looks fine, and there was a bit of a hiccup once or twice with trying to complete the sync process (although I imagine this was simply due to the mere nature of the number of images have to sync as I do photography and I model so over 32000 photos to sync). Finally I was able to complete the sync process, and all seemed fine.
I then went in to Photos app on the iPhone 6, and all the photos are there, all the albums are there, but all the albums are empty even though the photos are on the phone in the photos sections???
I would really like to know how to get the albums to sync properly to my iPhone 6 from an iMac, does anyone know what to do?
Also, my iPhone since then has been dropping battery life significantly and getting very warm over short periods of time, but I have had no applications open, the phone has not been in use at the time and has been locked screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Synced photos can only be deleted by syncing again with iTunes and deselecting all synced items.
    See:  iTunes: Syncing photos

  • How to create borders and watermarks in the new photos app?

In iPhoto we could create borders and watermarks amongst other features when going to the Export Option under File.
Does anyone know if/how we can do both in the new Photos App?
If not, what's the next best option for creating borders and watermarks, and does Photos support plug ins?
This is my first question of what Im guessing will be a series in getting to know and utilize Apples forceful technology.

You're not missing anything.  You're correct in your finding that adding/modifying location data in the new Photos application has been removed.
With that said, in a proactive manor you can submit feedback (do it at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html since there is no section for Photos yet) and request that location modification be added.  The more people who do it, the more likely it is to be added.

  • I need some help transferring all iPhoto libraries over to the new photos app

I need to transfer iPhoto libraries to photos app on osx Yosemite?

    HI,
Maybe try it this way this is what I did with mine because I did not migrate and didn't know about that either.
Photos application for Mac Instructions that might help!
On your iPad,iPhone keep the iCloud on in settings for Photos.
if you have not opened the New Photos application yet to have it transfer your photos from iPhoto let it Transfer the Pictures.
once you have all the pictures from iPhoto to Photos then in Photos go to Preferences
there is general and iCloud tab and go to the iCloud and only uncheck the iCloud button that will make it so it doesn't sync with your iPhone and iPad for Photos.
Then in Photos go up to View and press show sidebar because with that view you can move your pictures easier to albums snd delete or move any pictures or make new albums
For Duplicates if you have a big pile in a row and I mean not like every other picture of the same pictures on the keyboard Hold down the shift button. or the other way is to Hold down the Command buttom that is right by the space bar then on the trackpad or mouse click once on the picture you want to delete and do a bunch at a time then on the last picture of that pile either right click the picture and delete or go up to the edit button which is next to file on the top left and click delete in edit.
when you are all done with moving around your pictures or whatever go back to Preferences and turn on iCloud and make sure you have the optimize Mac Storage and then you are done! I hope this makes sense and works for you! here are the 2 pictures I'm talking about in settings.

  • HT204320 Help needed organsing my photo files in the new Photos program

The new Photos application has reorganised all my picture files and displays them according to the EXIF data. As many of them were scanned from vintage sources a photograph taken in 1900 now turns up in the wrong place. In iPhoto I had the pictures sorted by file name so they were chronological. Can Photos sort my pictures according to the file name?
I have also found that organising the pictures in Photos on my Macbook Pro does not mean they will retain that organisation when displayed on my iPad Mini 3 and iPhone6+. I have wasted so much time on this.
I have already tried using 'EXIF Editor' and 'Photo Meta Edit' (both recommended by the Apple App Store) to change the EXIF data. After paying for these apps and spending many hours editing numerous picture files they have now spontaneously reset themselves to 1st January 1970. Aaaaaaargh. Two pictures of my great grandparents (taken in about 1900) now have a generated 'created on' dates for themselves of Monday 7th July, 2036.
I need Photos to allow me to organise my pictures according to the file name. HELP!!!
    Geoff

Moments in Photo are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.
When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there was a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.
There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.
The downside to the simulation is that the Album/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.
Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

  • Deleting Aperture After Migrating to the New Photos App

I've just migrated my photos from Aperture to the new Photos application. Can I delete Aperture now without worrying that it will delete the shared library?

In theory yes, but I would ensure I had a backup of the library (and Aperture) on external drive or a clone of the current disk.
Personally I would hold off deleting anything at this stage until you've managed to throughly test Photos to see it both meets your needs and the library has migrated properly.

  • Ios7 - is there a way to shut off or clear the new photo stream activity?

Ios7 - is there a way to shut off or clear the new photo stream activity?  I am not asking how to shut off photo streams, just would like to clear or shut off the new 'social' activity portion of photo stream

Thank you, but that is not it, and I am talking about the iCloud photo streams.  I know how to modify who can see or post to a shared stream, that's extremely easy.
What is an issue is the new 'social' style activity that summarizes all of the shared streams.  It now posts/summarizes them in an activity thread in 'streams', called "Activity"
I would like to shut that off or be able to clear that view.  While I enjoy the occasionally funny pics I receive from old college friends in shared streams, I don't want that to show up in a 'cover photo' when I go to pull up pics in front of someone.

  • Is there a way to disable the new "Photos"

Is there a way to be able to completely disable or remove the new "Photos" program on a Macbook Pro?
I was completely happy with Aperture and/or iPhoto but this new program is missing so many features it us pretty much useless for what I do.

Apple is ending development of both Aperture and IPHOTO.
Following is a startup list of PHOTOS support on Apple - and the feedback site.
Once you have support page on the apple site - through links its a bit less frustrating to find bits of the rest of the manual.   From other posts here - some options are hidden until you add them to the menu bar.
Use feedback to tell Apple you would like to be able to download an IBOOK or PDF manual for PHOTOS (there are some for IS08 Ipad,Iphone,Ipod so why not for the software)  Also include feedback on what you feel is missing.

  • I do not like the new Photos is there anyway I can get iPhoto back?

iPhoto is still on your mac, it is in the application folder.
what version did you have before you upgraded to 10.10.3
as you list your OS as 10.7.4.
you really needed to upgrade to iPhoto 9.6.1 before going to 10.10.3.
Still you could try this suggestion from Terence Devlin.
